Miss Georgie Holbrooke is in the most dire of circumstances. Her brother has arranged for her to marry a vile man, and she has no doubt that he will punish her severely if she refuses. When an opportunity to work at an orphanage in the rookeries arises, she takes it, knowing it may be her only chance to escape.

William Cobbett, the Earl of Grenton, has settled comfortably into a general dislike for most people, especially since they always find a way to disappoint him in the end. But his life is upended when he meets the headmistress his solicitor hired to run his mother’s orphanage. She defies him at every opportunity, makes outlandish suggestions, and even had the audacity to bring her own household staff!

Stubbornness and desperation continually foil the pair as they navigate the pitfalls of what should be a straightforward relationship. Will the two of them ever come to an agreement?

I am enjoying the Gentlemen of London series. Each book takes the reader into a world of mystery, intrigue, and regency romance.

In A Perilous Circumstance, Georgie has a horrible older brother who is trying to force her into an arranged marriage with a despicable man. To get his way, he uses verbal and physical abuse. This leads her to run away and find a headmistress job in rookeries.

William finds out that getting what you want may be more than you bargained for. He owns the orphanage where Georgie becomes employed. The problem is that she is not pliable to his instructions or wants. She does what she knows is best.

It doesn't take long for her brother to catch up with her. There is a beautiful cast of characters that help her evade him and teach her to protect herself. (I love the ladies in this series!)

I read this book in a day. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the slow-to-build romance and the spies in this book. It's amazing what a network of spies can do to set things right!
I look forward to the next book. Too bad that it can't come tomorrow.

Desperate times call for desperate measures…

William Cobbett, the Earl of Grenton needs to find a headmistress to run his late mother's orphanage but he isn't having any luck. His mother's will stated that she wanted the orphanage to be run by "a woman of worth" which William interprets as "a lady of high rank".

Miss Georgie Holbrooke is in a dire circumstance. She must escape from her physically abusive brother before he marries her off to the odious Lord Ransdale. She acquires a position as headmistress at an orphanage in the rookeries, where she plans to hide out the few months until her 21st birthday when she'll receive her inheritance.

Poor William doesn't know what to do with this new headmistress that brings her lady's maid and a cook, then a butler with her. They also bump heads quite a bit over how to run the orphanage. He's quite content with how it's been run, but I don't think he'd feel that way if he were one of the poor young girls living there, and Georgie wants to teach the girls how to read (the horror!).

I loved all the back and forth between Georgie and William and found it funny that he kept "firing" her when she went against his wishes or what he thought was best. I liked watching William become a little more open to change and finally understanding that Georgie was exactly the type of woman his mother wanted to run her beloved orphanage. One of my favorite parts was Evie and Dinah!! I love women supporting women! I also really enjoyed the men working together with the rescue! If there's a mystery and spies involved count me in!!

I can't wait to read the next book in the Gentlemen of London series. This is a clean regency romance but there is mention of physical abuse but nothing graphic.

Honestly, another winner by Laura Beers.

This series has just been a delightful experience. The first book still has my heart, but this one is a close second. From the start, I loved the support Georgie was receiving from the staff to help her escape her (I'm gonna say it) evil brother. I loved having the continuation of the characters from the previous book, as I've grown quite fond of a few of them over the course of reading. Especially Evie, I love her so much.

I love LOVE that the author has taken the slow burn route and an almost "love creeps up on you when you least expect it" vibe, with a dash of *realism* because let's be real, unless characters have known each other since childhood, falling in love in a matter of weeks is not the organic love story I'm always looking for. But UGH this author has been masterfully writing these characters to take time to organically and slowly realize they can't live without the other and their strong willed minds will not allow anyone to come in between their happiness and I JUST LOVE IT.

These books really are making me feel things and I just can't wait to see if the other books can deliver that same feeling the first book and this one have given me.

I loved this book! I had a hard time putting it down! Other reviews talk about the plot, my favorite thing- I loved the main characters. I have close male family members with Asperger's, and I felt like William definitely had a lot of similarities to them in the way he was with Georgie. He definitely saw things much more black and white. I love how Georgie complimented his personality so well. At the end of the book, he really discovered he could be happy, and I loved that! He learned how to compromise in healthy ways and to not be so rigid. Great story, great characters!

They both need help. He just doesn’t know what type.
William, the Earl of Grenton, is in search of a lady to become the headmistress for his mother’s orphanage. Unfortunately, ladies of the ton did not do such things. Georgie has been orphaned and is now in the power of her older brother who has never liked her and recently became physically abusive. When her servants begin to fear for her life, they arrange for her to be hired as the headmistress under an assumed name for safety. Soon sparks begin to fly as the headstrong Georgie and the controlling William clash over the running of the orphanage. Mix in the brother’s desperation, an untrustworthy servant, a bow street runner, and a group of friends with a very different skill set and you have a fun, engaging and very enjoyable story that will keep you turning pages. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

Romance - CLEAN
Violence - Mild (though could be triggering to those with a history of being abused)
Language - Clean
Series - Book 3 ***Recommend reading these in order

Laura Beers is one of my favorite Regency authors. I have enjoyed this series, and this book was no different. I actually liked it a little bit more than I did Book 2 (An Unlikely Plan).

Both Georgie and William have their own reasons for hiding. William, because he puts himself in a self-inflicted purgatory and does not believe himself worthy of love. Georgie, however, is in literal hiding from her horrible and abusive brother. William, wanting to fulfill his mother's last dying wish, has been on the lookout for a lady to become headmistress of his mother's orphanage for girls. Georgie sees this as the perfect escape from the abuse of her brother, how would he ever find her in the rookeries of London.

Georgie challenges William in ways he never expected, and he grows to love her because of it. She opens his heart once again to love, and being loved, and will do whatever it takes to save Georgie from her brother and the horrible lord he will force her to marry. In spite of all she has been through, Georgie remains loving and kind to others, especially the girls at the orphanage. While others see them as only urchins, Georgie sees them as young ladies with potential.

When her secret is revealed, it will take William and his friends Lord Hawthorne and Lord Haddington and their special connections to keep Georgie and the orphans safe.

This is a sweet and clean romance with a HEA.

Trigger warning, heroine is hit on page. Realistic abuse situation but dealt with well. Georgie and William definitely butt heads often but I love how they eventually figure out communication and work for the girls in the orphanage. A few unanswered questions bothered me but other than truly enjoyed reading this book. Clean romance, fits in well with the series, both having been alluded to in other books and continuing stories from previous books as well. Maybe hinting at future stories as well. Looking forward to more.

Lovely, lovely story

I really enjoyed this book. Although the storyline was not an original one (main female character runs away from home when she is forced to marry a despicable man), I found the story well written. The characters were well defined, and the writer provided a lot of background information through the characters’ internal dialogue so it was easy to understand their motivations and empathize with them. I found the story moving and at times, tragic and even horrifying. And I appreciate that it was a clean story. Very good read.

This is a wonderful series with characters that jump off of the page. Each book can be read as a stand alone story although there is overlap of characters in each book. There is suspense and drama as some of the characters work for the Crown as spies.

The h in this story Miss Georgie Holbrooke has had a very difficult life since the death of her father. She was doted on by both of her parents and encouraged to study anything she wanted. Her brother has become her guardian and he has been overbearing with her and at times violent. He has decided to make a marriage arrangement for her with a very vile man. When she refused to go along with her brother- he got violent with her and her loyal servants worked together to sneak her out of the house. Georgie only has a few months before she can inherit a large inheritance including an estate. She needs to stay in a safe place where her brother cannot find her until that time. Her servants arrange for her to become the headmistress of an orphanage in the rookeries- a place where no young lady would want to live.

William Cobbett, the Earl of Grenton, has been trying to find a young woman to run the orphanage his mother founded. Before his mother passed away- she had a very specific type of woman she wanted to be the headmistress of the orphanage. It has been very difficult finding a gently bred young lady willing to move into the rookeries. When his solicitor tells him he has found a young lady- William wants to meet her to determine if she is the right fit for the school. What he doesn't expect to find is a beautiful young lady and he cannot understand why she has brought her own maid and cook with her. He finds her to be outspoken, stubborn and she makes crazy suggestions about how to treat the young girls.

The two of them go head to head on many occasions and even though he wants to fire her for multiple reasons, he starts to feel very protective of her.

The story kept me enthralled watching Georgie and William work together to keep her safe from her brother.

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

Determined to follow his mother's last wishes, William Cobbett, Earl of Grenton seeks to find a headmistress for his mother's orphanage for girls. It must be a lady per her request which seems ridiculous as no lady would like to live in such a unsafe neighborhood. His solicitor finds a lady willing, but William does not like her headstrong ways or her reasons for trying to make the orphanage more than it should be. Yet, as he comes to understand more of Miss Georgie Holbrooke's situation, the more he finds he cares and that terrifies him.

Miss Georgie Holbrooke is looking for a safe haven from family who would force her into marriage with an horrible man. Thanks to the assistance of friends, she is able to hide in a girl's orphanage. She takes on a roll she is not quite sure what to do with, but she knows these girls need a better chance at entering the world with more skills than is being taught. Dealing with the difficult headstrong Earl is not helping even though she is giving up so much of her own things to help these girls while constantly looking over her shoulder hoping she is not found. Somehow the Earl is the last person she expects to aid her in her quest and taking her heart.

This was a sweet regency romance with a headstrong Earl and a lady willing to do anything to help those around her while in danger. Once the Earl learned the truth of the matter, his devotion to Georgie does him credit in trying to save her. This was very clean and another enjoyable, fun, romantic read of Laura Beers.

I received a arc copy and the opinion given is my opinion and mine alone.

A Perilous Circumstance’ by Laura Beers is a regency romance with suspense and intrigue, plus a beautiful love story that I enjoyed reading!

After her father passed away, Georgie Holbrooke is in her abusive older brother’s care. He is forcing her to marry a scoundrel, and she finds herself in a perilous circumstance! With the help of some friends, she finds a job at an orphanage.

William Cobbett, the Earl of Grenton is looking for a lady to run his late mother’s orphanage. A lady is finally found, and when he meets her he soon discovers she is not like other ladies. She is beautiful, obstinate and outspoken. This is quite the fateful meeting as Georgie might just be the one to rescue him from his despair, and he may be the one to rescue Georgie from her peril. I enjoyed reading this book as the story unfolded!

🤍Georgie Holbrooke is a girl after my own heart as she loves getting lost in a good book. She also has a heart of gold! She is so patient, kind, and wise, with a stubborn streak. William was such a good cinnamon roll hero. I absolutely loved watching him unravel layer by layer revealing his sweet center.
🤍I enjoyed revisiting characters from previous books. I love this group of friends and I’m enjoying each of their stories. I especially love Dinah, Evie and Hawthorne.
🤍This book had a bit of enemies to lovers, workplace romance, hidden identity, one bed, fake relationship, grump and sunshine.
🤍There is so much character growth in this story for William! I love a good story where both characters become better because of each other.
🤍This series is a unique set of regency stories as there is a lot of suspense and adventure in each book. Spies, pistols, mystery, a villain and always a daring rescue.

As in any story, the love story is my favorite part and Georgie and William are adorable! I loved watching them fall in love and find their happily ever after in each other! This is book 3 in the Gentleman of London series.

✨Releases August 2nd. Thank you to the author for an arc copy. All opinions are my own.

Content: loss of family members, briefly mentions a mistress, violence, physical abuse, death.

This book definitely kept you wanting to read “just one more chapter”! I really enjoyed the plot and the bits of mystery.

Georgie is waiting to come into her majority so she can receive her inheritance but when her violent brother tries to force her to marry a man she detests, Georgie must escape and hide away for a few months. She finds herself as a headmistress for an orphanage run by Lord Grenton.

Lord Grenton is very used to having things his own way, so when a rather outspoken new headmistress appears and defies pretty much everything he says, he is frustrated… and very intrigued. Who is this mystery lady and how did she end up at the orphanage?

There is a lot of fun back and forth between William and Georgie. Their arguments are so great lol. And I loved the continuous banter. Even if some of their conversations end with Georgie being “fired” from her position again and again 😂. I really enjoyed Georgie’s character. Her personality was incredibly endearing. William was a bit harder to like at first but he absolutely grows on you. And when he’s at his happiest he is a changed man!

The servants that are loyal to Georgie and travel with her are so great (most of them)! I love the cook and butler especially. The girls at the orphanage were super as well. And even the cranky housekeeper grows on you. I wish we had more info on how things turned out for them in the end. But I shall give them their own happy endings in my head 😃.

I enjoyed Evie and all of William’s friends. They are incredibly helpful in this story! The coach scene towards the end was one of my favorites. Call in the reinforcements!

Overall this was a good story that kept your attention!

I received an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed William and Georgie's story. I liked how Laura Beers interweaves the story with mystery and really captivates you with her fun characters. Although William and Georgie may not have truly resonated with me, I still liked seeing them come together. I did enjoy the strength of the female characters, though sometimes I really didn't care for Georgie's defiance. But I also didn't like William's dominance either at times. Both evened out enough though for me to still like them and make it believable when they come together in the end.

I do have to say I absolutely adore Lords Hawthorne, Haddington, and even Hugh. Those three really captured my heart and I can't wait to read more about this whole crew in the next book. Miss Ashmoore has been an absolute delight and she truly will be a fun character to hopefully see again.

Side note: There is abuse that takes place in the story, though not graphic I would mention it for trigger warnings. The slow growing romance is sweet and I would definitely describe this plot as a Grumpy won over by Miss Sunshine.

Overall, great addition to a delightful series! Looking forward to the next book!!!

I am really enjoying this Regency Romance series by Laura Beers! I love this unlikely group of gentlemen friends and enjoy how each story is unique while having common threads because of their friendship. William was the grumpiest of heroes and it took him a fair bit to soften, however Georgie was a perfect match for his surly countenance. Georgie’s past was truly heartbreaking and I loved that it made her bolder and determined to be independent. The orphanage was a unique place for a romance to blossom, but it allowed William to see how clever and capable Georgie was, even if it caused friction! The conclusion of this book was brimming with danger and romance and I was really happy with how everything wrapped up! Looking forward to the next book in the series!

The language/dialogue is so stilted and flat in this book. At times it feels like you are listening to the weather forecast for all the emotions it has. Heroine is impractical, senseless and sheltered. Hero is not much better.

Having enjoyed the first two novels in the series “Gentlemen of London”, I was looking forward to enjoying this one. Unfortunately, despite a good enough plot featuring my favorite characters from the first two novels, many grammatical errors, the anachronistic language, poorly written dialog, and alame love story ruined it for me.

A perilous reading

This novel may appeal to some but I question why. It appears to be written by a person who has a passing knowledge of historical romance but little skill in plot and character development.
The storyline: the hero is so devoted to his mother's request but then has no idea what her intentions were in a way that defies logic. The chances of securing a well-bred woman of high birth to not only run an orphanage but live in the Rookeries is probably akin to the chances of winning a national lottery. The writer appears to have no understanding of what the Rookeries were like. It was not the modern-day equivalent of living in a large city. Also, she clearly wasn't hired to run it at all, but only appears to be a figure head.
The heroine: just appears confused. It is entirely possible to be defeated by years of abuse, but she didn't seem defeated, just clueless.
The hero: What awful character development. The author attempts to give him a basis for his misanthrope but it, like all the dialogue in this novel, is so stilted and unnatural. His guilt makes sense but not in its drawn out unraveling.
Plot development: are we really asking why is her brother who has gambling issues and wants to sell his sister to the highest bidder, won't relent in his search? Is that a mystery to someone? The answer to this question started in the first page. Why are characters confounded? The mystery of how her brother discovered her is "unveiled" with absolutely no development. We are left hanging with no resolution, explanation or story.
The intrique surrounding what the other characters are engaged in is continuously "alluded to" or rather thrown in our face, with no sophistication, leaving us to wonder whether it is important enough to care about or whether like the hero, we should just ignore the constant hints and unconventional behavior and move on with our lives.

The writing. What...stilted... writing. It reminded me of early reading primers: "See Jane run". I suffered through the unsophisticated dialogue to finally arrive at the end.

I will never read from this author again. This was a labor, but not one of love.

Miss Georgie Holbrooke lives with her brother who is a viscount. Her brother is overbearing, angry, and mistreats Georgie. When he demands she marry a disreputable man and she refuses, he resorts to fists and beats her reminding her that he is her guardian and she will do as he says.
With the help of the butler, cook, and her lady's maid Georgie escapes and hides in the rookeries.
William Cobbett, Earl of Grenton, has an orphanage located in the rookeries that was the dream of his deceased mother. His mother insisted that a Lady of the Ton be found to assume the position of headmistress. William has enlisted the aid of his solicitor to search for a lady but none has been found.
William is amazed when Georgie suddenly appears at the orphanage with her Lady's maid, butler, and cook. What kind of down-on-her-luck lady brings along a lady's maid, cook and butler? She introduces herself by an assumed name in case her brother should come in search of her.
William is depressed over the loss of his family and is morose and angry. He shuts himself away from the world and seems to become angry over everything and resorts to shouting and 'laying down the law'. Georgie has just escaped an overbearing, shouting brother and decides enough is enough. She will do as she pleases.
The only difference between her brother and William is that William does not use his fists on her.
William does not become likeable or even bearable until the last 1/4th of the book...yet they fall in love...which I found to be a tad unbelievable.
Georgie's brother hires people to abduct her and threatens everyone concerned. The ending is fraught with conflict and danger.

Georgie Holbrook was the daughter of a wealthy Viscount , until his death changed her circumstances. Her brother became a tyrant, and began to hit her over every small infraction. Then he told her that she was going to marry a very dubious man, who was not respected due to his nefarious ways. She refused, and he beat her again. Lord William is looking for a mistress to run his mother's orphanage. The person he gave this task to ,keeps coming up short. William is more than frustrated, because this was his mother's final request before he lost her. Georgie is out of ideas, due to being a lady. Then an idea is presented to her. Could she really run an orphanage? It was located in the rookeries, which is the worst part of London. She agrees to run there, and hide, while doing the best she can for the orphaned girls. Willam, and his new headmistress disagree on how the orphans should be taught. It is quite funny when her butler arrives, her lady maid, and cook as well. William will not pay for the extra people in wages, so she pays them herself. The book has a dark side with her brother tracking her down, and she is almost captured several times. I really enjoyed the banter between them.Plus I loved his friends from his days at Eaton. This series is based on each of his friends, and I could not enjoy them more. The book had a very satisfying ending, and included an Epilogue witch I always love. I gave it five stars

Abuse is cruel whether it is physical, verbal or psychological. Tearing another person to shreds, demeaning, degrading all lower a persons self worth. It can be a family member or a spouse, a person in authority or someone you admire. You give them the power to hurt you. You also give them the power to encourage you and build you up.
Georgie was a lady that had been loved and indulged by her parents. Unfortunately after their deaths, her brother became her guardian and her gave her no value. She was merely chattel and the inheritance she was to receive was something he wanted. Her brother wanted to marry her off to pay his gambling debts. She ran from home to a orphanage that had advertised for a headmistress. She hoped to hide there until she was old enough to get her money. This story was better than most.

Book Three of the Gentlemen of London delivers a historical romance that keeps the pages flying. In this book, William’s devotion to honoring his late mother’s legacy drives him in his quest to find a proper Lady of society to run her cherished orphanage, he faces what feels like an impossible challenge until Georgie enters his life. Georgie is everything William isn’t expecting. Smart, compassionate, and courageous, she agrees to take on the orphanage because she needs safety as she attempts to keep hidden from her dangerous brother. Georgie and William butt heads at nearly every turn. Yet beneath every disagreement simmers William’s growing desire to protect her. Once William discovers the danger Georgie is fleeing, the story deepens. Watching him shift from frustrated employer to determined protector adds a satisfying romantic tension.

I enjoyed the book, but it wasn't my favorite in the series. It was well written.

Clean
Language: None
Sex/innuendo: Sweet kisses. No sex, but mild discussions about rape/men taking advantage of women.
Violence/gore: Mild fight scenes and some deaths. One man beats a woman by hitting her a couple of times. A few peril/danger scenes.
Dark/Creepy: None, but some realities of that time period are discussed. Really sad, but mild in description.

Spoilers:
I enjoyed this book. I enjoy seeing past characters return, especially Hawthorne. He is my favorite. I enjoyed the Gretna Green twist at the end. That section of the story was my favorite! Sometimes the realities of the time period were a little heavy in the story, but it was still a good plot. I also think the cover design is cute :)

“Your beauty radiates from the depths of your soul and envelops everything you see through your eyes.”

This story had me smiling 98% of the time the other 2% I was wanting to strangle the villain of the story(TRIGGER WARNING FOR ABUSE) . I loved Georgie and William’s relationship and how it came to be. They both saved each other in different ways and brought light in an otherwise shadowy existence. Their story is definitely one of my new favorites. I will say that some of my favorite parts we the guys bantering together at Whites. I absolutely love the bromance that is Haddington and Hawthorne. I am looking forward to Hugh and Haddington’s stories.

There’s just something about the way Ms Beers writes-her character development and communication are excellent! I think this story is my favorite in the Gentlemen of London series. Grumpy William and sunshine Georgie are the perfect opposites attract couple. 😍

clean grumpy hero/sunshine heroine regency

I’m a fan of the grumpy hero falling for the positive heroine. His fighting his feelings was humorous because she was getting under his skin and he couldn’t seem to accept it. Georgie was a good match for him because his ideas on quite a few things were super annoying but maybe not uncommon during this time and she helped him correct his thinking. I really liked that the staff was good to Georgie, I’m not sure if that’s something that would actually happen but it’s nice. It was nice to see past characters. Looking forward to reading the next friend fall in love. I hope Eve gets her own story.

"Miss Lloyd may have disrupted his life, but that didn't mean he wanted her gone. Frankly, she was the only thing lately that gave him a reason to smile."
William, the Earl of Grenton, has been unhappy for awhile, and his friends are starting to get concerned. His current mission is to find a headmistress for an orphanage that was his mother's legacy. She insisted that he find a lady to be headmistress, but it is rare to find someone that grew up as a lady who is willing to work and live as a headmistress. Enter Georgie, whose brother has become a villain in her life, and holds control. To escape him, she takes an opportunity to disappear and work at the orphanage. When William meets her, they immediately annoy each other. Georgie has firm ideas of how she wants to move forward, and many of her ideas are very different than the norm. Before long, William finds himself looking forward to their interactions and growing in respect and care for her. Will he be able to let go of his grief and guilt and be able to move forward before it's too late?
This is my favorite book in this series so far! William broke my heart. I hated so bad the things he had gone through, and wanted him to find hope and happiness. Georgie was the perfect heroine for him. I loved the care she had for those less fortunate, and how she made friends with Dinah and her sister from the first book in this series! It's been so fun to see how each story in this series builds on the other and I eagerly await the next installment! You won't want to miss this delightful series from Laura Beers!

Reluctant.

I really enjoyed this book. Lord Grenton has been in morning for the past year since his mother died. Her dream was getting her orphanage for girls in the rookeries to be a success. The problem was, she wanted a lady of the ton to run the orphanage and that was not an easy task. Until Georgie had to escape her abusive brother and an unwanted betrothal to an even more abusive man. She ran away with the help of her servants and took the position at the orphanage. The story had grief for both Lord Grenton and Georgie, family drama, strong friendships, suspense and love. Good story.

A Regency romance set in modern day Chicago?

It could be. Characters sound like it, and act like it. This author seems to have little idea how people spoke, behaved and believed in the regency period. The writing itself isn't terrible. But it's very hard to get into a historical that is so clearly written for modern day sensibilities. And about modern day issues.
I read to escape the increasingly terrible society we live in. That harps on these issues so relentlessly it's no surprise everyone is constantly gloomy, joyless and depressed. I'm sick of having them forced on me in what's supposed to be entertainment. Wish authors, and movie and TV producers understood that.

This book is so good! From running from her brother to falling for a stubborn gentleman, Georgie Holbrooke is a delightful heroine. She is spunky and confident, despite the perilous circumstances she finds herself in. And dear William matches her stubbornness to perfection. The banter between the two and the growing friendship and love makes the story all the better.
I love Laura’s ability to spin a story that is both entertaining and full of romance. I laughed and cried while reading this book. I highly recommend reading it.
