I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This story continues from where the last one left off with Mason and Cora trying to survive and rebuild from the attack where their above ground buildings were set on fire. In this story, Mason, Cora and a group of individuals to handle security while they investigate the tunnels which have been discovered on Mason's land. They reach a dead end and Mason and Cora send the others back to a point that the checked earlier and expected them to knock on their side of the door which they thought was opposite where Mason and Cora stayed. After awhile when they didn't find a knoock, they returned to where the other group had gone. When they got there, they discovered that they had disappeared.
Later, while Mason and Cora, were looking back in the tunnels to see if they could find out what happened to the group. When they got back outside of the tunnel, the person maintaining guard said that someone came looking for Mason. That night this individual showed up and wanted Mason to let another group of individuals have his land. It seemed that this person knew all about the tunnels and got Cora to believe him that he would help get her missing people back. Cora made arrangements to meet up with this guy by the name of Kevin. As things went along, it appeared that he was stringing her out. Eventually Mason and Cora gave Kevin an ultimatum.
To learn what was so important about the tunnels on Mason's land, what the group that Kevin was with wanted, who among the people in Cora's bunker had knowledge about the tunnels and whether the missing people ever showed up, then you need to read this book.
I wish there was a extra book!! I don't think Frank would honor their pact. And I don't think Cora would let go of the tunnels. She wanted to use them so everyone could use them to go from farm to farm. I don't think Carol Reed would behave once she heard about the booze that was supposed to be close by!! So we need a follow up book. Fantastic description of the battles, rebuilding the area and how to survive with the government so close.
Wow - this is book 4. I enjoyed this one as much as the other three.
The author is doing an excellent job of pointing us in different directions and then reeling us back in at the end to the main story of survival.
Masterfully written to make sure you keep turning the page and get fully invested in the characters.
This episode of the story sounds uncomfortably close to "what could happen" in our world. We should be scared. But hopfully by the time we get to the end of the saga - the good ladies and gents (don't like the reference term "guys") get it right!
Looking forward as always to the next installment!
Definitely recommend The Underground Series for everyone who enjoys an "atmospheric tale"!
I really wanted Lost Days to be as good or better than the rest of the books in the series. The quality of the previous books has been unique for an author switching genres. For the most part, Lost Days followed the successful path of the other volumes: well written, tight plot evolution, and character development.
Unfortunately, it fell apart mid-book with repetitive plot scenes, Cora and Mason, the two main characters arguing over and over about the introduced character Kevin. It was too much jealousy (romance genre) angst vs what this book and series is all about: survival adventure and complications in a world at the end-of-days.
Hopefully, any future books get firmly back on track.
