Killer Cupid

Rate this book
Melanie Travis and her pedigree poodles are back on the case in an adorably giftable, Valentine’s Day-themed hardcover by award-winning author Laurien Berenson!

Melanie Travis is taking a much-needed break from the dog show circuit for a romantic Valentine’s trip with her husband Sam, but when someone at their cozy Berkshires inn has an unexpected date with death, Melanie must slip into something sleuthier for the weekend . . . Melanie is delighted at the prospect of three uninterrupted days alone with Sam (and, of course, her prize-winning Standard Poodle, Faith). They’re booked at the White Birch Inn, a picturesque New England resort nestled at the foot of a snow-covered mountain. The inn has a full slate of couples activities planned for the busy Valentine's weekend—date nights, sleigh rides, tobogganing, ice skating, and pop-up shops in the inn's ballroom —from the bubbly to the bubble bath, the resort is a perfect match for Melanie and Sam’s vacation. But the first night of festivities feature an event that isn’t on the murder. The sheriff quickly launches an investigation, but at the inn keeper’s urging—and because she suddenly finds herself a person of interest in the case—Melanie tries to sneak a little detective work into her romantic getaway. But with the resort nearly sold out for the holiday weekend, there's no shortage of suspects, and Melanie’s secret sleuthing is already attracting the wrong kind of attention. Her Valentine’s trip is heating up faster than the chocolate fondue . . . just not in the way Melanie hoped. But if she doesn’t catch the cold-hearted killer soon, another innocent victim will get the kiss of death . . .

This is book 29 in this series, but I haven’t read any before and I absolutely loved this cozy mystery. I do plan on reading some of the earlier books now that I have discovered Melanie and her family (and pups). I know this was a shorter novel, but even with that I completely devoured the book in one sitting. I found the mystery to be interesting and have just enough suspects and twists to be enjoyable. Melanie and her husband Sam were surprised when their children said they had a surprise and Aunt Peg showed up. Apparently the three had conspired to plan a romantic Valentine’s Day weekend away for Melanie and Sam and for Melanie’s brother and sister in law. When an employee is found deceased the sheriff launches an investigation but everyone is speaking as though it were natural causes but the circumstances don’t make sense to Melanie. Of course she needs to ask questions and work on finding out what really happened, but if there is a killer at the inn are any of them safe?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Thanks to their sons and Aunt Peg’s gift Melanie, Sam, and Faith, their Standard Poodle, along with Melanie’s brother Frank and his wife Bertie are enjoying a Valentine’s Getaway at the White Birch Inn in the Berkshires. The resort has all kinds of events planned for the holiday weekend. Murder though was not on the schedule. Someone went rogue and killed the events coordinator.

The inn is full of suspects and while the local sheriff appears to have the investigation under control the owner of the inn asks Melanie to do a little sleuthing. With Bertie acting as her Watson, Sherlock Melanie starts looking into the crime. But if they’re not careful their Valentine’s vacay could end very badly.

This is the 29th book in the series and it is still going strong. Melanie and Sam deserved a break and some alone time and I loved that Faith was allowed to tag along. She even made a new friend at the inn, a beautiful Samoyed named Sammy, the resident canine at the inn. Frank and Bertie also came along. It was funny though, all the events were set up for couples and sometimes that meant Frank and Sam going to the event, not the couples the inn had in mind, while Melanie, Bertie, and sometimes Faith did their snooping. They did all go tobogganing together and to the hayride followed by a bonfire. Both sounded like a lot of fun.

The mystery is pretty complicated but Melanie does her thing, ticked off a couple of people but kept digging like a dog after a bone. She finds an important clue that sets up quite a showdown with Melanie and Bertie in a precarious situation driving the suspense level to a nice pitch as everything plays out.

Killer Cupid is a well-plotted humorous Valentine’s mystery. Being novella length it was a quick entertaining read that I enjoyed this story very much. I am looking forward to visiting these characters, both human and canine again soon.

Hearing sirens on a romantic getaway can't be a good sign.

By sheer serendipity, I heard sirens in the distance here at home just as Sam and Melanie hear them at the White Birch Inn. I was already so into the story at that point that I actually shivered at the sound, thinking I'd somehow magically created it. In any case, that's the power of this series and this book. You are immediately drawn in and care about the characters, especially when there are sirens. So much for Melanie's Valentine's Day vacation, huh? You just know she'd be drawn into the investigation.

It was great fun to spend some time with Melanie and Sam, who usually isn't as visible in the series, not to mention brother, Frank, and her SIL, Bertie. All are likable and people you'd surely enjoy hanging out with, especially if lucky enough to be able to do so at a winter wonderland style fairy tale resort. I was glad to see that Mel didn't let the murder totally distract her and I loved the ambiance of the hayride and such, even if Sam made a note not to ask Frank to partner him in any future athletic contests after one archery tournament. It did rather give me pause as Mel made frequent references to her beloved dog Fern's advancing age. While I fully understand that unlike most, this series allows its cast to age, I hope it isn't preparing us for a sad goodbye to sweet, faithful Fern. The dogs are always an important aspect of this series, let's face it, and that is what drew many readers.

As for the murder, like most, it's complicated. Initially, it's thought the victim simply died of exposure to the bitter cold. But, why would someone from upstate New York, where bitter cold is a given, not be aware of the dangers of prolonged exposure to frigid temperatures. Why was Belinda outside anyway? Why is Cliff so nasty to Melanie? Even Fern growls at him. Why is Melanie getting involved anyway? Will her not too oblique questioning get her in trouble? She seems to immediately put Harley in a defensive mode on the hayride. How does Jill prove helpful? Or, is she really helping? Who....oh, more than enough teasers. It's a fun, quick read with interesting characters in what appears to be a fairy tale setting....with snow.... and Faith is there for us dog lovers. Who did it? Not telling. As I said. It's complicated. Read the book. You won't regret it and if this is your first meeting with Melanie, you'll probably be rushing to read earlier stories. This series is that good.

Thanks #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks for allowing me to tag along on Mel's Valentine's holiday. Always fun to see regulars in a new setting.

Killer Cupid by Laurien Berenson has Melanie Travis and her husband, Sam along with Faith heading off for a relaxing, romantic trip for Valentine’s Day weekend. Melanie’s brother, Frank and his wife, Bertie are joining them at the White Birch Inn in the Berkshires. The couples are enjoying their mini vacay until the events coordinator ends up dead. The local police are quick to write off the woman’s death as accidental. Melanie has her doubts. When the inn’s owner, Evelyn Barker asks Melanie to investigate, she is happy to oblige. Melanie with assistance from Bertie and Faith sets out to locate the killer. Killer Cupid is the twenty-ninth A Melanie Travis Mystery. It is a novella which can be read in one sitting. I enjoyed reading Killer Cupid. I was eager to see what mischief Melanie got into this time. We get to spend time with Melanie’s brother, Frank and his wife. They go on the trip with Melanie and Sam along with Melanie’s beloved Standard poodle, Fern. Fern’s age is mentioned a few times. I hope the author is not preparing us for her departure. I enjoyed the descriptions of the White Birch Inn and its surroundings. It seemed like the perfect place to spend a romantic weekend. The mystery was intriguing. The events coordinator for the White Birch Inn is found dead by the ice-skating pond. It appears that she died from exposure. I had to wonder how a woman who is used to the frigid winter weather is not aware of the dangers of being outside too long. What was Belinda Rush doing outside late at night? Melanie is naturally curious about the case. When the owner of the inn asks her to investigate, Melanie does not hesitate to say yes. Melanie questions the staff and guests about the victim. I like that Bertie joined Melanie on her sleuthing ventures. Melanie is a bad influence. Faith tagged along on some of the ventures. The sweet poodle is a good judge of character. I enjoyed the suspenseful reveal. Aunt Peg, Davey, and Kevin provide humor especially the rambunctious Kevin. I like that we get to spend more time with Sam in this tale. Killer Cupid is an entertaining cozy mystery, and I am eager for the next A Melanie Travis Mystery. Killer Cupid is a merry mystery with a Valentine vacay, a faithful Faith, a deceased employee, sticky smores, spiked cider, and mistrustful Melanie.

Valentine's Day wasn't on my radar ,in the grueling August heat, but once I started reading Killer Cupid, I was transported to a snowy mountain landscape and a luxurious B&B. Oh, and did I mention there was a murder? Unfortunately for Melanie, she's in the middle of an investigation into an employee's death and a race to find the murderer before they strike again.

It's fun to read about a cozy sleuths taken out of their normal routine and the B&B setting was so much fun. Add Melanie's husband, Sam, her brother and her sister -in-law and the ever sweet and loyal poodle, Faith and you have a mystery with twists and turns, humor, family and a lovable furbaby in a gorgeous mountain setting. The mystery kept me guessing and reading - just when I thought I had it solved there was another clue that led me in a different direction. In the end, I guessed wrong but the pieces fit together beautifully and I closed the book with a smile but then a frown because I had read too fast! The Melanie Travis series is always wonderfully written with characters who grow and become book "friends" and mysteries that are believable and well-written.

I'm looking forward to the next adventure!

Melanie and Sam take a much needed romantic weekend, but we all know murder is involved.
Melanie's brother Frank and his wife Bertie join them, and Melanie's faithful poodle Faith joins them.
I really loved that the author included Faith in this adventure. It was a lot of fun to read this book.

Killer Cupid is part of the excellent Melanie Travis mystery series, but this one works especially well as a standalone. Dog lover Melanie, her husband Sam, and her standard poodle Faith, go on a weekend getaway for Valentine's Day. Melanie is excited about this rare time away from the kids and the rest of her fur babies, and dog shows, but she still finds time to gather clues that help solve a murder. The book has a good balance of events at the resort, close moments between Melanie and Sam, and Melanie and her sister-in-law, who is also at the resort with Melanie's brother, investigating the crime.

This book is a little different from most in the series since Melanie and Sam are away from home. You don't have the pleasant chaos of their homelife with their kids and the rest of the dogs. There also isn't any kind of dog show in the book, although references are made to their standard poodles show careers. Although I love those aspects of this series, Killer Cupid is a nice change-of-pace to keep the series fresh and is still fun to read. Fans of the series as well as new readers will enjoy this well-written cozy mystery.

Another wonderful adventure with Melanie and Faith. I love how the author incorporates the poodle into the story without voicing her thoughts (not a fan of "talking" animals) but still conveys what she is feeling The mystery is a little different in this one as they are away for a couples' vacation with Frank and Bertie but it is no less enjoyable. The plot was well-paced and there were plenty of suspects to keep you guessing. I did miss the huge brood of poodles, the requisite dog shows, particularly Terry and Crawford, and even Peg, who has grown on me over the years. All in all, a great addition to the series and I'm really looking forward to the next.

I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.

Killer Cupid by Laurien Berenson is the latest installment in the Melanie Travis series. Melanie’s kids, with the help of Aunt Peg, decide that Melanie and her husband, Sam, deserve a weekend getaway. They have made reservations at a resort in the Berkshires in Massachusetts for Valentine’s Day weekend. Faith, Melanie’s beloved standard poodle, accompanies them, as well as Melanie’s brother and sister-in-law. The resort has scheduled a variety of activities including an assortment of winter sports, fancy dinners, dances, and romantic hayrides for the holiday weekend. What was not scheduled was the death of the events coordinator, Belinda. Belinda’s death seems suspicious. When the Evelyn, the owner of the inn, asks Melanie to investigate, Melanie does not hesitate.

I thoroughly enjoyed Killer Cupid. It was a bit different from the other books in the series in that it didn’t involve dog shows or the antics of Melanie’s dogs. Also, Aunt Peg and Melanie’s sons played very small roles. However, I found it to be a nice change of pace to have the story focus more on Melanie’s husband, Sam, as well as her brother and sister-in-law. The description of the inn and the surroundings were very inviting, transporting me (in my imagination) to a cozy winter retreat where I could curl up next to a warm fire with a cup of hot cocoa. The plot moves along quickly to a satisfying finish. It was a quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Fans of the Melanie Travis mystery series will enjoy Killer Cupid. Even though this book is part of a series, it works as a stand-alone book that readers of cozy mysteries will enjoy. I highly recommend it!

Although this is the latest book in Laurien Berenson's series featuring Melanie Travis, and I have only read two other volumes in the set, I still thoroughly enjoyed Killer Cupid. I had no difficulty finding my feet dropping in so late though no doubt I have missed some terrifically good reads. In this tale, it's February in Connecticut and frayed wife and mum Melanie and husband Sam think they’re going to enjoy a romantic Valentine’s weekend getaway, along with Melanie's brother, Frank and sister-in-law, Bertie, at the White Birch Inn in the Berkshire mountains of Massachusettes, at the expense of Auntie Peg...

A thrilling ride from start to finish I find protagonist Melanie to be a very likeable main character who is devoted to her family and friends. Her family is involved in showing champion Standard Poodles at dog competitions. Though there is no dog show in this tale, the mystery is well crafted and thought out and I loved the subtle clues and I had lots of fun solving this whodunit. It took me a while to work out the motive. All of the action kept the story rapidly moving toward the conclusion. Delightful and entertaining, Killer Cupid is a highly recommended, quick, light read for all cozy mystery fans.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Killer Cupid is book twenty-nine in the Melanie Travis series by Laurien Berenson. Melanie Travis's Aunty and her two boys organised a weekend away for Valentine's Day at a beautiful White Birch Inn resort with her husband, Sam, her standard Poodle Faith, and her brother Frank and sister-in-law Bertie. On arrival at the Inn, Melanie Travis became involved in a murder inquiry with the support of her sister-in-law Bertie.

Killer Cupid is the first book I have read by Laurien Berenson, and an enjoyable cozy mystery. I also did it again, starting at the end of the series, not the beginning. I enjoy the way Laurien Berenson incorporates animals into her plot. I engage with the story and the characters of Killer Cupid from the start. I love Laurien Berenson's portrayal of the characters of Killer Cupid and how they intertwine throughout this book. Killer Cupid is well-written and researched by Laurien Berenson. I like Laurien Berenson's description of Killer Cupid's settings that complemented the book's plot.

The readers of Killer Cupid will learn about holidaying beautiful New England northeastern region of the United States. Also, the readers of Killer Cupid will learn about the dog breed called Standard Poodle.

I recommend this book.

Melanie and Sam head off for a relaxing and romantic Valentine’s Day get away. But when a murder occurs at the Inn, Melanie finds herself sleuthing and landing on the suspect list. Now e she’s even more determined to find a killer, even if the sheriff doesn’t want her sticking her nose in.

This is a fabulous cozy series…it would have to be for this to be the 30th book in the series! I love that each book focuses on different people in Melanie’s life, not just the murders. There is something for everyone in this series and if you have not yet read one of these books, give this one a try…they read fine as standalones, but best of all? You have another 29 books to bing on!

Another of my favorite series! Melanie and Sam go away for a romantic weekend with her brother and sister-in-law. While there, a resort. employee is murdered. Melanie is asked by the owner to investigate. So, between tobogganing and snowmobiling she begins asking questions and eavesdropping. While a good addition to the series, I do have a few quibbles. One, I missed Aunt Peg! She didn’t have as large a role as usual. Two, the book was too short. I really enjoy these characters, so two hundred pages is just not enough. As always, I can’t wait for the next book!

Such a fun book! I just love Melanie and Sam - particularly because they are so supportive of each other and still romantically involved with each other. I can just picture this fictional resort and how this could all have happened. And of course, any book is improved by the presence of an adorable dog. Hope this series goes on!

This is a quick read. The story involves an inn, a romantic getaway, family, dogs, drugs, and murder. I didn't like the ending of the mystery. It should have been something that involved less stupidity from the main character. The inn was interesting. There was a lot going on there. Some of it was good, and some of it was bad. I hope that it gets a new life. I didn't like that her brother and his wife went with. It doesn't help that I don't like his wife. The rest of the story was fun and interesting.

The holidays are over and January is well on its way. Melanie and Sam’s house is full of poodles and one sweet mutt belonging to the youngest, Kevin. He is the first one up this Saturday morning so she thinks it best that she too gets out of bed. Once the coffee is started Kevin starts dancing and singing - he knows a secret and is bound to share it with the entire house. Upon hearing this Davey bounds out of bed and begins to tell his little brother to stop from the upstairs hallway. Shortly thereafter Aunt Peg is the first guest of the day. It’s a secret that she and the boys share. A pleasant surprise for their parents, Peg has made reservations for a Valentine’s Weekend at a resort so the duo can spend some alone time. She will be at the house to keep track of the boys and get them off to school. True, all of her poodles will come with. To those of us who are followers of Melanie Travis, we know that there will be suspense in the future. From this novel’s title it is forecast to be a murder.
Laurien Berenson’s next Melanie Travis Mystery, Killer Cupid will be published by Kensington Books on December 27, 2022. I appreciate their allowing me to read and review her latest spoof of the Travis/Driver clan via NetGalley. It’s a fun romp where Bertie and husband (brother of Melanie)Frank come along. A short piece, almost a novella, it is well worth the read; perfect for a snowy weekend’s read. Do enjoy!

A cozy comfort read. Melanie and Sam and poodle Faith along with Bertie and Frank are off to a snow-covered Massachusetts winter resort for a surprise romantic Valentine’s weekend - until someone is found dead. This small book is a quick read. It has many familiar characters for those who follow Melanie Travis, her Aunt Peg and their many poodles, as well as some strong new ones, both likable and repulsive. The plot is direct : why did Belinda die, how did she die, and who is involved. Surrounded by romantic interludes, humorous moments, and some shopping the investigation moves along. And that cute fellow on the cover is Sammy, a very lovable pooch. A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining book.

Killer Cupid by Laurien Berenson is the 29th in the Melanie Travis mystery series, yet the author manages to keep each book as fresh and interesting as the first. In the installment, Melanie, her husband Sam and her dearest poodle Faith are off for a fun and romantic weekend at a New England inn , along with Melanie’s brother Frank and his wife Bertie. Of course, a murder occurs shortly after their arrival and the inn’s owner asks Melanie to investigate.

I loved this deviation from the dog show circuit into a fresh new setting. The description of the inn and activities in the snow-covered landscape had me reaching for a cozy cup of hot chocolate and lighting up the fireplace. It’s always fun to follow Melanie on one of her investigations and to have a peek into her more personal relationships. One slight criticism is that Frank came across is immature and self-centered in this book. I enjoyed his character much more when he was just quirky and charismatic. (I reviewed an advance reader copy and all opinions are my own.). All in all a truly enjoyable and “cozy” read.

Hah! It was meant to be a romantic and fun weekend way for Melanie, her husband Sam, her brother Frank, and Frank's wife (and Melanoe's BFF) Bertie but of course there's a murder! The Inn is filled with people for Valentines so there are plenty of suspects which Melanie must, of course, work through. Don't worry that this is the 29th (wow!) in the series as it will be perfectly enjoyable as a standalone. Fan of the series will be looking for the Poodles and should know that while Faith is along for the weekend, the others are at home with Aunt Peg. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. This is a classic cozy from an expert at the genre.

This is one of the most interesting of the Melanie Travis mysteries *later* in the series. This book, #29, and #26, the Howloween book, are two of my recent favorites.

I liked that the main characters were Melanie, Sam, Bertie (SIL) & her brother, i.e. #29 breaks from the usual mayhem around Peg Turnbull, adorable preschoolers/grade schoolers, Bud (the dog that I sometimes wish would get adopted out to another family), and the world of the standard poodle show ring.

I enjoy the traditional characters/settings, but when you’re approaching 30 books, it’s good to expand the world for the readers.

It was just the palate refresher needed—a bit more sophisticated, a natural time limit (Valentine’s Day weekend) and a fun climax to the story.

Davey and Kevin (with assistance from Aunt Peg) surprise Melanie and Sam with a romantic Valentine's weekend getaway at the White Birch Inn in the Berkshires. Though Melanie is a bit apprehensive about leaving Aunt Peg in charge of her children - both two- and four-legged - she and Sam haven't had a day to themselves in longer than they can remember and when they find out they'll be joined by Melanie's brother Frank and his wife, Melanie's BFF Bertie, they can't say no.

In typical Melanie fashion, she just happens to be in the right (wrong) place at the right (wrong) time to witness what appears to be a romantic tryst between a mysterious man and a young woman who turns up dead the following morning. The owner of the White Birch Inn finds out about Melanie's hobby of solving crime she immediately seeks her out for help getting to the bottom of what's going on.

I absolutely love it when the main characters in a series go on vacation. It's fun to see them inhabiting a new world, shedding the responsibilities of their ordinary lives and investigating new people in new places under unique circumstances. This book is particularly fun, a private inn in the mountains with spectacular views, fun activities, shopping, and lots of adult beverages to warm them up. Melanie and Sam also got to enjoy some alone time with just the two of them and Faith, Melanie's heart dog. While the kids are sweet and the other dogs are adorable (especially little Bud), this book was a fun change of pace. Melanie is one of my all-time favorite cozy characters and it's been fun watching her go from a lonely single woman raising her young son on her own to the woman she is now, married to a wonderful man and surrounded by family and friends and, of course, Poodles. This series is a definite must read!

Killer Cupid by Laurien Berenson is book #29 in the Melanie Travis Mystery series. This was a really fun whodunit to read! The story takes place at an inn located in the Berkshire Mountains. The main character, amateur sleuth Melanie Travis and her husband Sam, along with Melanie's brother Frank and his wife Bertie are staying at White Birch Inn for a Valentine's Day Weekend getaway. There are lots of fun and romantic events planned for the weekend. But Melanie gets caught up in investigating a suspicious death. I liked the characters and enjoyed following along to the investigation's successful conclusion.

I recieved an eARC of this book so I could review it. Thank you for the opportunity. Please be aware that changes may occur before the final edition.

Laurien Berenson is one of a handful of authors that I pre-order every book from, because they are uniformly good. I have enjoyed Melanie's mysteries and have enjoyed my regular visits with her and her poodles.

This one is no exception. It's an enjoyable mystery, as Melanie, her husband, Sam, her brother Frank, and her SIL, Bernie go to spend a romantic weekend at a resort, as Peg maintains the home front with the boys, a houseful of dogs, and a turtle. Like the other mysteries in the series, it progresses at a steady pace, with enough details to keep the reader guessing.

If I were to make one change, I kind of missed the dogs-the dog world has provided a backdrop for the series, and while I understand that Melanie has more in her life than dogs, having them sidelined felt a little less like Melanie to me, and more like any other mystery. I also admit to some trepidation, as Melanie references Faith's increasing age-there was a part of me which really feared for her survival, because I have been following her from puppyhood, and the first book on. I know dogs don't live forever, but I rather hope Faith does.

All in all. an enjoyable mystery, and one which would be appropriate for teen readers who enjoy the genre-the content is lighter, and less explicit, than many YA books. Well done!

Melanie Travis’s Aunt Peg has surprised Melanie, her husband Sam, her brother Frank, and his wife Bertie with a romantic Valentine’s trip to the White Birch Inn in the Berkshires. Melanie is looking forward to some rest (and more than a little romance) but death seems to follow her – sure enough there is a murder the first night they get there. Although she has solved murders in the past, Melanie has no intention of getting involved in this one – until the inn keeper asks her for help. Soon Melanie finds herself asking questions – but will those questions put her in danger?

“Killer Cupid” is a delightful entry in Laurien Berenson’s Melanie Travis Canine cozy mystery series. It is a short but sweet read – perfect to read on a cold winter’s afternoon or night! While I am not a fan of Valentine’s Day, I found myself enjoying the description of the Inn and the various Valentine’s Day activities planned there – they sounded like fun without being hokey. The chemistry between Melanie and Sam continues to zing even after several years of marriage and I also love the relationship between her and her brother Frank and of course Bertie. The mystery itself is well done – just a few suspects but it took a surprising turn that made certain events quite suspenseful – well done by Berenson!

“Killer Cupid” is a sweet Valentine’s Day cozy mystery!

Melanie Travis and husband Sam think they’re set to enjoy a romantic Valentine’s weekend getaway at the White Birch Inn in the Berkshires. All the kids and dogs are taken care of at home, except Faith who goes with them. Melanie is looking forward to three days alone with her beloved, tucked into the picturesque and romantic mountain view lodge.

But they’ve hardly arrived before one of the staff ends up dead and despite an immediate police presence, the inn’s owner approaches Melanie and asks her to find out what happened. Sam, used to how murder and intrigue seem to be attracted to his wife, supports her efforts.

As Melanie starts to ask questions, she draws some unwanted attention…and not of the good kind.

Killer Cupid is pure Melanie Travis mystery, perfect for fans of the series. Melanie is in fine form, searching for answers to a killer’s motives and trying to avert becoming the next victim. Aided in this adventure by her spunky sister-in-law, Melanie forges ahead in her quest to discover who has committed murder in the Berkshires and why…all while on a romantic Valentine weekend getaway.

The family at the heart of this book is a delightful cast of characters. The cuteness of a little kid and an entire herd of lovable dogs. A teenager who's realistically cheerful and sullen at the same time. A couple who knows each other inside and out. And Aunt Meg, the quirky side character with spunk. "It will be chaos. I like chaos."

Honestly, with this perfect set up, the plot of the mystery barely matters. I can see why this is such an expansive series (though this was my first venture into Berenson's writing).

But there is indeed a mystery! Fans of the cozy mystery genre will love it. Just twisty enough, most people will be kept guessing. Our protagonist mentions she always wanted to be Nancy Drew - and I think that just might be true for all of us who are fans of cozies.

Perfect choice for a Valentine gift to yourself! (And a quick read if you're on a weekend getaway like the story's couple.)

Melanie Travis and her husband Sam have been given a gift of a romantic weekend from their children and Melanie's aunt. Melanie's brother and his wife are going as well. Once there, everything sounds and looks wonderful. It's a beautiful resort with lots planned. Dogs are welcome to Melanie brings here beloved standard poodle, Faith. The other dogs are staying home. The first night there Melanie notices two hotel employees outside in the cold. It looks like a tryst, but when one of the employees is found dead, Melanie has doubts. The owner of the resort has asked Melanie to investigate because she is not sure the police are up to the job.

Another fun cozy. It makes me want to have a standard poodle! Melanie and her family are great. It is a fun story that moves along quickly and is easy-to-read. Such a nice escape.

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book and offer my honest review.
