For the love of love…and books

Mattie Mobley planned to be a teacher, but when times grew tough during America’s Great Depression, and there were no teaching positions in her hometown of Asheville, NC, Mattie found work starting a school and helping the Pack Horse Librarians just over the mountains in the rural town of Certain, Kentucky. She’s not certain at all that this is a good situation, but she’s determined, and honestly, a little desperate. Of all the things that Mattie does have—money, comforts, a good name, she doesn’t have what matters most—friends, love, and a purpose of her own.

Daniel, “The Grizzly Bear,” Barrett had a lovely life for a little while. Overcoming his family’s bad name and worse reputation, he made a life for himself in Certain. He was married with children and a figure of respect in his church, but desperate times called for desperate measures and a terrible tragedy was the result. Now exiled with his children along the wily run of the Hell for Certain Creek, Daniel has gotten used to being the town pariah again. It’s in his blood after all. Right? Maybe not, but he’ll need the powerful influence of love not only to change his own mind about himself but to convince his estranged extended family and the whole town as well.

Can one librarian with a saddlebag full of books make people see the difference between fact and fiction? Mattie loves a good story, and this may be her best one yet. Fiction tells the best truths and the best truth of all is love.

“All our lives are a mixture of moments and memories - pieces that have fallen apart and come together, been stitched, and glued and mended to make the story of who we are. Our stories are worth telling. Each and every one. Where would we be without them?”

Oh. My. Goodness.

ALL THE STARS AND HEARTS!

I can’t wait to get back to Certain, Kentucky! 😍 This book moved me in ways I can’t explain.

Author Amy Willoughby-Burle explores how the impact of a story can bring unity to a small town.

This splendid historical romance is set during the 1930s depression in Kentucky and highlights Eleanor Roosevelt’s library initiative to help fight illiteracy. My teacher heart ached, split open, and was stitched back together with this 5-star story.

Mattie Mobley leaves Asheville, NC and heads off unaware that she’s completely unprepared for the task she’s taken on for the summer. She’s taken a temporary position as a packhorse librarian while she gets the Kentucky school program reinstated. The great depression devastated the small town of Certain in the heart of Appalachia; the school and church have been closed for some time and the people are just trying to survive. One family is simply existing, broken due to misunderstandings, with no hope of ‘living.’ There’s more! Poor Mattie has been told to be aware of a bear hiding out on the other side of Hell!

Excuse me while I stand on my soapbox now - you NEED this read if you enjoy

I thoroughly appreciated the author's exploration of forgiving and forgetting, hope, perspective, humility, loyalty, and trust. I don't think I’ll forget the old tales nor the ugly baby stew any time soon and, for the record, Daniel Barrett has won my heart.

Oh y’all. I can’t adequately put into words how much I loved this book. Its cadence both washed over me and embraced me, and I quickly fell under its charm. Despite this being a fictional novel, the characters convinced me they are real people, and you cannot tell me otherwise. The fact that The Other Side of Certain is the first in a new series simply elates me because I need to spend more time in this community and with these characters.

Mattie Mobley wants to be a teacher but in her hometown of Asheville, NC, during the Great Depression, there are no teaching positions to be had. So, inspired by Eleanor Roosevelt’s library project, she volunteers to help a small Kentucky town in the heart of Appalachia as a pack horse librarian with hopes of eventually reinstating the school as its teacher. Much like Catherine Marshall’s Christy Huddleston, Amy Willoughy-Burle’s Mattie Mobley isn’t prepared for what she’s walking into. Not the town’s troubling secrets, nor the story in progress that she’s disrupted just by her mere presence … nor how the people would so completely worm their way into her heart. I loved Mattie’s character – she is full of both strength and empathy, with a big heart and a determined spirit. I felt her emotions deeply as I read the parts of the narrative from her perspective, and I very much enjoyed looking over her shoulder to watch her fall in love with the town of Certain, its children, and one ramshackle family in particular.

Enter Daniel Barrett – town pariah and hermit whose tragic past is cloaked in gossip and silence. A ‘beast’ of a man whose wild appearance and gruff demeanor successfully keeps people from intruding on his pain, even if it also stubbornly keeps his adorable children sheltered from the outside world. In fact, if the dictionary did such things, the word ‘haunted’ would include a mention of Daniel Barrett. He is haunted by his choices, haunted by his upbringing, and haunted by all he’s lost. When Mattie rides into his life, bringing the gift of story back to his little family, he soon falls hard. And oh boy, y’all. When he starts flirting, hang on to your hats. When he starts kissing???? Goodness, just pick me up off the floor where I’ve melted into a swoony little puddle. No matter how good the kissing is, how much he wants to go on kissing her, or how quickly his children loved her, pursuing a happily-ever-after with Mattie is complicated at best and impossible at worst. The author does a fabulous job of incorporating these various – and palpable – tensions into the story and building them to a crescendo that will steal your breath.

Bottom Line: Amy Willoughby-Burle’s latest is absolutely one of my favorite reads of 2022! I loved every word, and I so badly want the time to go back and read it again. It took me on a roller coaster of emotions, broke my heart a couple of times, and sewed it back up with a tender joy that spilled out my eyes. Amid the sweet tears there was also laughter. I grinned like a fool, and I certainly swooned like one. This is more than a historical romance – it is also a layered look at the beauty of grace. Fans of Christy, Wonderland Creek, and Beauty & the Beast will love The Other Side of Certain!

The Other Side of Certain by Amy Willoughby-Burle takes the reader to the rural Kentucky town of Certain where secrets and pain stay buried… until they can’t. The first-person point-of-view drew me into the characters’ minds but got a bit confusing when it jumped between heads within the same scene. Otherwise, it was effective for the story.

The Other Side of Certain brims with family drama. Past events slowly unfold, and we learn the truth at the same time Mattie does. I liked the mystery of not knowing what truly happened in Daniel’s past until later in the story. Daniel stars in this book as he has the most character growth and challenges to overcome. I loved that Mattie’s personality was exactly what Daniel needed to be drawn out of isolation and toward healing. The Other Side of Certain begins the A Love for Certain series by Amy Willoughby-Burle. Four stars.

The Other Side of Certain brings Asheville teacher Mattie to the Kentucky mountain town of Certain to start a school and serve the community as a pack horse librarian. Set during the Great Depression in the 1930s, Mattie’s new job is part of the Works Progress Administration program. Mattie’s well-to-do background didn’t prepare her for the mountainous rural setting or for traveling by horse to deliver books, but her heart was ready to fall in love with the community, its inhabitants, and the “Bear.” A skilled story-teller, Amy Willoughby-Burle takes the reader into the tension within the community, its wariness of newcomer Mattie, and the tragic secret everyone kept from her. The author’s thorough research shows up in historical facts, the role of pack-horse librarians, and the setting itself. The surroundings are vivid as the reader accompanies Mattie on horseback along a treacherous, rocky trail, feeling the loamy dirt, hearing the twisting creek, seeing the canopy of trees and noticing the cool air under its shade. Literary references are sprinkled throughout. For example, Mattie shares Lord Byron’s poem “When We Two Parted” with Daniel to note the similarity in their depth of feelings. Ava comments about the poet’s scoundrel reputation, and although Daniel’s black sheep role is not directly related to the scandals of Byron, he had his own tarnished history hanging over him. “Reputations were a hard sentence,” Mattie muses. With a nod to Christian themes, it’s a story of love and redemption, and how one makes the other possible. The Other Side of Certain is the first in a series. I look forward to reading what comes next.

A newly minted teacher from Asheville leaves her affluent life behind to act as a pack horse librarian and set up a school in a rural Kentucky town, only to fall for the town pariah. And while run ins with locals and cultural clashes are inevitable, Amy Willoughby-Burle's The Other Side of Certain bypasses most of what might be expected and becomes a deeper, warmer story.

As if the Great Depression and Daniel Barrett's past don't complicate things enough, Mattie Mobley's father is busy behind the scenes. So when decisions are made and misunderstandings stand in the way, the story takes a turn for the suspenseful and dramatic in an otherwise gentle romance.

If you enjoy Southern fiction with a 1930's setting that verges on star-crossed grumpy/sunshine romance, this may just be your cup of tea, too! Recommended.

During the Great Depression, a federal program was developed to provide books for people who lived in the 'hollers of Kentucky' and young women were given the chance to deliver these books. If you've ever experienced the thrill of having a bookmobile come to your home during the summer months, you have an inkling of the joy that these mountain families felt when 'that book woman' came into view, and she was riding a horse! The Other Side of Certain tells the story of Mattie Mobley's decision to take a temporary job as a packhorse librarian and it's truly a feast of words and emotions! Author Amy Willoughby-Burle shares a tale that I won't soon forget, and she's created characters that I want as friends. I loved Mattie Mobley and Daniel Barrett and I was totally invested in their growing awareness of each other. Mattie is anxious to learn more about this reclusive 'grizzly bear' but he's determined to keep her at arm's length. Will Mattie uncover the secrets that seem to haunt him?

Willoughby-Burle totally captures the poverty, the varying emotions, and the strength and fortitude that were prevalent during this time and place. I was deeply touched by The Other Side of Certain and I consider it to be historical romantic fiction at its best! It's definitely a book that I will read again!

I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

A young, idealistic woman determined to help a community during one of our nation’s hardest times.
A man, having faced incredible loss, with a horrible reputation and a dark secret.
The Other Side of Certain is a beautiful story of love, loss, strength, and redemption. Amy Willoughby-Burle masterfully uses the little known history of the Pack Horse Librarians to bring life to this beautiful love story of an unlikely pair.

The Other Side of Certain by Amy Willoughby-Burle is a truly an interesting read. The story is set in the period of the Great Depression. The author brings to us a cast of characters that we all have met
sometime in our life. Mattie, a Southern socialite, comes to town with high expectations of what she wants to accomplish in her new job. Reality quickly sets in when she realizes that Certain, Kentucky
is nothing like her hometown of Asheville, North Carolina. It is a town of secrets and no one feels it
is necessary to fill her in. Burle has a wonderful way of moving the story along with her vivid
descriptions of the area, her cast of characters and her way with words. In truth, I was a tad dismayed
by the cover because it gave away some of the story. I now didn't have to imagine what the main
characters looked like because there they were right on the cover. If you enjoy reading books that are filled with surprises, a scary moment or two and a few twists and turns that makes you like everyone
all the more then The Other Side of Certain is a book worth adding to your library.

I don't have much experience reading southern fiction but once into the flow of this delightful book I was nearly transported to the little community of Certain, Kentucky where the story plays out. The setting is in the later 1930's with the great depression still raging on. A newly minted young teacher, Mattie Mobley, struggling to find the work she hoped for in her home community of Asheville, North Carolina, finds an opportunity in this small, very rural and isolated community in Eastern, Kentucky. Mattie, who comes from some privilege adding some colorful contrast to the story, will work in a WPA library as a Pack Horse Librarian while she works to resurrect a once functioning school in this small and impoverished town. It's characters provide color and life, predictability and surprise, and are all reflections of people we may well know. This fictional story, historical in nature, reminds us of some very important and timeless life lessons - that it is far better to make judgements, when judgements are necessary, based upon ones own experience with individuals rather than the opinions and experiences of others. When that is done, friendships, that might have been undiscovered, are formed and chances for redemption, which all of us need, are given. And is there anything better than stories of redemption and new beginnings? Not for me, at least. Look for the book's release in later September, get a copy and enjoy.

Amy Willoughby-Burle does not disappoint with her newest historical fiction book, The Other Side of Certain. Amy’s descriptive, vivid writing keeps a reader not only engaged, but also anxious to keep going, while getting to really know and love her characters! I enjoyed getting to know Mattie Mobley, a strong, determined, gentle, and hopeful young woman, new to the rural town of Certain, KY from Asheville, NC.

For me, living in Asheville makes this story feel close to home, while also introducing and painting a historical scene in my mind, one that I did not know about prior to reading.

Love, hope, and forgiveness abound in this beautiful little story!

A lovely introduction for me to to the writing of Amy Willoughby-Burle. I wanted to read this book because I love southern fiction and it is also about a subject I find very interesting- pack horse librarians. Mattie Mobley comes from a well to do family but with the nation in the Great Depression, Mattie leaves Asheville to take a job starting a school and helping as a part time Pack Horse Librarian in very rural Certain, Kentucky. There she finds children eager for the books she can deliver and she is anxious to convince them to come to school in the fall. At the end of her route, she also finds Daniel Barrett and his three children. Many in the town consider him the “devil” and the cause of much grief in the town. All Mattie sees is a man who is in pain and obviously loves his children. As Mattie gets to know the family, she knows there is more to the story than what she hears in town. The story is engaging and the characters will have you rooting for their happy ending. The story is beautifully written and a must read!

Mark your calendars for September 21st when "The Other Side of Certain" is released. Counting myself lucky to have received an early release copy, I could not put this historical romance down!

Mattie Mobley, a well-to-do, independent minded Asheville, NC socialite decides to make her life meaningful when so many are suffering in Depression-era America. She accepts a teaching-librarian job in rural Certain, Kentucky much to her father's disapproval. Upon arrival, Mattie is welcomed by Mrs. Ava, the head librarian, along with Ruby, an assistant, and is informed that in addition to her other duties, she will also have several routes to travel by horseback along the "Hell for Certain Creek," taking books to the families who live even further away. Mattie hopes that she will be able to get to know the children on these routes, thereby encouraging their parents to allow them to attend the school she hopes to start in town.

Daniel Barrett, a single father of three, is the pariah of Certain. A lot of mystery, but more open hostility surrounds this man who the locals refer to as "the grizzly." When Mattie meets Ella, Marie and Hugh Barrett at the end of her first day's travels, she is immediately drawn the the three motherless children who long for books and company, and is not about to be intimidated by their rough father. In fact, Daniel, longs for human contact like his family, as he is drawn to this spunky, fun, and compassionate librarian who reawakens his senses, and begins to heal the many hurts of his past.

This book paints vivid pictures in the readers' minds with colorful prose, three-dimensional characters, an on-going mystery, a beautiful, but unforgiving setting, and themes of unconditional love, the power of forgiveness of self and others, and the importance of redemption in all our lives.

This book is a most satisfying, and, yes, uplifting read. I can't wait for Book II !

Amy Willoughby-Burle is a new author to me and I love discovering another gem to add to my collection of authors to follow and books not to miss!
Briefly, Mattie and Daniel have each experienced some tragic events in their lives and are trying to move forward day by day. This is the story of that journey for each of them. And really, a whole town of people must decide whether to keep the past with all of its' sorrow as the "most important thing" or change their way of thinking and acting based on the present.
I really enjoyed the story with all of its' real emotions. I can easily imagine this happening even now, and it's a reminder to me to figure out whether I'm reacting to how I felt in the past or if God might be calling me to a different outcome.

From Endorsement:

As a fan of southern fiction, I had high expectations for The Other Side of Certain and Amy Willoubhy-Burle exceeded them all. She weaves an inspiring story of redemption and finding home in a rough-around-the-edges town that both intrigues and entertains from page one. Simply put, the book is lovely! With thought-provoking dialogue, characters you can't help but cheer for, and poignant symbolism, Burle tackles the topic of hell on earth--as well as in man--displaying God's grace and mercy throughout. The ending will leave readers with a smile on their face and hope in their heart.

The Other Side of Certain is a historical novel set during the Depression. It is the story of Mattie Mobley, a young woman from a privileged background who dreamed of being a teacher - so she traveled from Asheville to a very rural part of Kentucky to start a one room school and become a Pack Horse Librarian. There is a mystery in Certain, Kentucky involving an abandoned church (now a library) and a widower who is exiled outside of town with his children. She is determined to learn the story ... especially after she meets the widower.

I wanted to read this novel because I was intrigued by the Depression era setting. I also loved the idea of Pack Horse Librarians!

This is just a lovely read. I found myself immediately transported to another time and place by the author's storytelling, and felt like I was discovering the town of Certain just as Mattie was. I was very intrigued by the church-turned-school and the mystery of the broken church window there.

Daniel, the exiled widower, is a fascinating character and I loved his slowly unfolding connection with Mattie.

The author is a wonderful descriptive storyteller. I loved details like:

"Back in the church, I discovered that the pews did serve as bookshelves. Volumes of literature of all types were categorized along the rows, spine out or flat down for magazines and other things. “That’s clever,” I said, pointing to a bookend made from a license plate folded at a ninety-degree angle. I could see them all through the rows. “We make do,” Ava said, coming to stand beside me. “People send all sorts of things as donations. Nothing goes to waste. When you don’t have much, much care is given to everything" (eBook location 195).

I highly recommend The Other Side of Certain to fans of historical fiction, and especially to anyone who is interested in 1930's America. This is the first in a new series, Love for Certain, and I look forward to reading more of this series in the future.

It’s funny how the mind can play tricks on you. There was I, thinking packhorse librarian stories had become en vogue these past couple of years… but my review history tells me I’ve only read three over an equal number of years.

Yes, facts can be important and that’s what Mattie is determined to discover when she’s warned about one of the locals on the library trail she’s given. Except, no one will tell her why because they don’t think she needs to know. There are other mysteries too: why is the library housed in a near-derelict church, and why did the previous inhabitants of her lodgings leave their belongings behind when they left?

The answers are revealed in an engrossing novel written entirely in the first-person perspectives of our two lead characters. This format didn’t always work, for me at least. I preferred Daniel’s point of view; I felt I could “hear” him better than I could Mattie. What it did do, however, was prolong the mystery. Everything was carefully written so the reader only caught glimpses of what might be until the intentional revealing. I also got the impression that there’s more to Mattie’s story than met the eye. At first her family’s wealth appeared obvious, and perhaps more so given that The Other Side of Certain is set during the Great Depression and the poverty in the rural community is evident. But at one point there’s a line from Mattie that seems to imply her father has been keeping up appearances. Appearances, they’re important in this novel.

Maybe my brain is playing tricks on me, but I’m sure I saw a list of the titles to follow in this new Love for Certain series. I can’t find them now of course. But it’s good that there is more to come. Daniel’s children are delightful, and I’d love to see more of them. I think some of the supporting characters have stories they need to tell as well.

Disclaimer: Although I received a copy of this book from the publisher, the opinions above are my own.

Some books are meant to be savored. Slow down, put up your feet, and enjoy "The Other Side of Certain." It’ll be good therapy for your soul in this frantic, screeching world. Every page of this novel evokes heartfelt emotion and builds appreciation for the lovely details of everyday life.

When a 1936 Studebaker drops off Mattie, the main character, into the fictional town of Certain, Kentucky, she has no idea she’ll soon be hauling library books on a pack horse, up rocky creek beds through the woods to remote cabins, where roads are often impassable. Mattie thought she had accepted a volunteer position in Certain to re-instate their school program. But she didn’t know she’d need to ride out into the wilds to recruit her students.

Mattie soon finds herself in the middle of a hostile community feud. She has no idea what the squabble is about, or who’s involved. Some days, the tension seems to border on hate. In the process of finding out the surprising and sometimes shocking details, Mattie might even meet her match.

Whether or not you’re a fan of historical fiction, you’ll immediately enjoy this intimate peek into lives and families during the Great Depression—an era when nothing goes to waste—where folks say, “When you don’t have much, much care is given to everything.” In contrast to our 21st century throwaway society, "The Other Side of Certain" contains a wellspring of treasures that have nothing to do with money, but everything to do with love, grace, and hope.

If you loved reading about the book woman and pack horse library, then this is one for you to read! I loved this one. Mattie decided to head to a small Kentucky town to take a teaching position because there were none available in North Carolina and this is her dream, to teach children. When she gets to Certain, Kentucky it is not at all what she was expecting and she quickly learns that although this is in the sticks, as they say - she has fallen in love with this town, the people, and their resilience to everything happening in the world. They have learned to make do with every little bit and yet the folklore runs deep. She also quickly learns that a man she is befriending is not someone to be seen around and there are many in the town that make it clear that he is not wanted and that she needs to be careful around him. Mattie is one of her own mind, and besides she is there for the children but she also is one to attempt to seek out the truth and the best in others. Becoming part of the Pack Horse Library has taught her more than she could ever imagine and now she must decide what is truth, fiction, folklore and what she wants. Thank you to HFVBT to the invite and to the author for the free novel. I really loved Mattie's story!

Very moving story and a breath of fresh air. Love amidst trauma and grief/sorrow and finding healing is a true tale always worth hearing. I can't wait to read the second book! I enjoyed Mattie and Daniel very much and look forward to hearing about their lives unfold. Reminds me of Wendell Berry's Port Williams novels. I deeply appreciated the motif of light in the stain glasses windows and the kaleidoscope imagery. A tale filled with holiness and light.

A love story wrapped in something much larger--the reminder that we can't always judge people by the stories we hear whispered or the way they look and act. When people are willing to open themselves to the possibility, new stories can be written and told. It's fun and heartwarming to spend time in the saddle with Mattie, a young woman trying to figure herself out as she finds a home and a purpose in Depression era Kentucky.

This is an awesome historical romance! I was fascinated by what all pack horse librarians went through to get books to people. I could identify with the author’s description of various characters’ love of books. The love story was inspirational, suspenseful & heartwarming! I loved it! I am happy that this is the start of a series! I definitely want more!

I found this one frustrating. So much unnecessary drama. And the backstory was drawn out so long that I thought it must be something terrible in the MMCs history. But it wasn’t that big a deal. Definitely not equal to the shunning he was receiving. I felt the book was a simple love story that tried to be way more dramatic than it actually was.

The Other Side of Certain introduces us to Mattie Mobley, a dedicated book lover and one who has aspirations of being a teacher to nurture that love of books in children as well. Only, the Great Depression makes finding a job anywhere nearly impossible. But not completely, as she soon lands a position in a small town tucked away in the Kentucky mountains called Certain, KY. Mattie soon realized nothing is certain in Certain and stumbles on a haunting story they would rather she not know. The notorious town grizzly isn't one Mattie is eager to meet, but upon meeting his three 'cubs' she quickly sparks a bond with his oldest over their shared love of books! Now, she must determine if taming the town's pariah is worth it when everyone but her seems set against it, and is such a feat even possible? The Other Side of Certain by Amy Willoughby-Burle is a charming and powerful tale of the cost of healing and an example of just how tight we sometimes hold onto the things God has already asked us to lay at His feet.

Amy Willoughby-Burle writes some of my favorite characters in her The Other Side of Certan, as we enter the town of Certain, Kentucky. It reminds me of some of the other Appalachian towns I've been to and lived in and I adored how easily I was transported into their lives while reading! Such beautiful imagery and I love Mattie's descriptions as she describes her appreciation for the small rural community after growing up in the much larger town of Asheville, NC. There are some faith elements, including the mention of a parsonage next door to where Mattie is staying, and a few instances of praying, but this one doesn't have the heavy faith themes that some books do, and I found that I enjoyed this one as a Historical Fiction novel with light faith elements. It was more a love story and a redemption story, and one I would feel comfortable recommending for both Christian and clean secular fiction readers alike.
