The O'Malley Family #1

Under Your Skin

Rate this book
Nothing gets under your skin quite like love...

Norah O'Malley has way too much on her plate to even consider romance. Being home for the first time in ten years—single and pregnant—is more than enough. Too bad her heart has other ideas when she first lays eyes on her brother's tattooed, grumpy, and entirely too sexy boss...

Kai Ellis knows that no one (least of all him) gets a fairy tale, happily ever after ending in this life. But Norah, the woman who lights up a room like sunshine, hasn't learned that lesson yet. So, he has no business thinking about her in any kind of romantic capacity. He is, though...

But all the chemistry in the world won't help Norah with the hard decisions she needs to make—or help her prove to Kai that happy endings really can happen. When it matters most, will Kai put his faith in in Norah—and in love? Or will they go their separate ways forever?

Under Your Skin, book 1 in The O’Malley Family series, is a steamy, lightly angsty, grumpy/sunshine, opposites attract contemporary romance full of big, Irish families, even bigger emotions, and a guaranteed happily ever after. Download today and welcome to the O’Malleys’ neighborhood!

Maybe it would be better this time around to leave a factual review rather than an opinionated one. Mainly because this avid true romantic at heart isn’t big on a heroine being eight months pregnant with another man’s baby and a selfish, reluctant to love hero. In fact, that combination makes me cringe just thinking about it. I’m trying to give you a heads up, folks. I’ve got some serious issues with this so called romantic read.

To say Norah and Kai didn’t click as a couple would be an understatement. He was rude to her and seemed to resent her presence whenever she was around. It actually felt a little strange to have Norah wanting to dress to impress/catch his eye considering her very pregnant condition. She seemed to be watching the clock just waiting to pop that baby out and move on with her life, too. At least she seemed to care about picking the right adoptive parents. It’s a given this baby is better off being raised by someone else. Even more embarrassing was Norah trying to constantly strike something up with Kai when he obviously wasn’t interested in her.

This so-called hero came across as an uncaring, selfish, self-centered type of guy. Not only was he hesitant to love, but he was also reluctant to help his sister take care of his mom. In fact, he resented it. You see, life was easy when dear ole sis took care of everything. How dare she ask him to do anything! With only three kids to raise, doesn’t she have lots of time on her hands?

**spoilers possible**

Kai cared more about his own personal life, tattoo business, and hockey practice than anything else. Don’t even get me started on his ex-gang member friends he played poker with in the basement. Especially the comment Rooster made about how they used to share everything, including girls. Then how furious Kai became when Norah let his mom’s book club come over without asking his permission first. Yeah, this guy felt he was the king of everything, and Norah seemed blind to it all. Her self-respect flew out the window time and time again, like when she called to apologize to Kai after he yelled at her for being nice to his mom by arranging the book club gathering.

At 47% Norah is practically begging him to discuss what’s between them. What does he do? Points at her stomach and tells her “she”, meaning the baby, is between them and that she should go find a frat boy. What a smooth talking Romeo, huh? Does she give up? No, this spineless, brainless, idiot heroine is still chasing after him a week after giving birth and handing her baby over to someone else.

Oh, how did that go? Let’s see, Norah goes into labor at Kai’s house. His mom calls him after Norah can’t get in touch with her brothers. Kai storms in and gets mad his mom even called and doesn’t want to take Norah to the hospital! Tells her to call for an ambulance instead. He reluctantly drives her and promptly leaves when her brother shows up. Unfortunately, Norah still pursues him. Tells him to give her a month for her body to heal from giving birth, then proposes a one month fling. Well, I’m smart enough to know better. It is way past time to give up on this train wreck. Here’s to hoping others enjoy something about this book. I normally love this author, but this one got under my skin in a very bad way. Rating: 1 star

Norah is seven months pregnant to a guy she had a summer romance with. She has just moved back home to live with her father and brothers. They want to skin the guy who knocked her up but she is yet to tell him about his impending fatherhood because she wants to do what is right for her baby. She wants her to have the best start in life and this is a decision she needs to make with no other people influencing her.

She gets offered a job by Kai, her brother's boss and owner of the tattoo shop they work at. His mother (Lani) has come to stay with him after surgery and he needs someone to provide some home care for her while he works. Norah is studying to become a nurse so this is the perfect fit for her and to be honest, no one else wants to hire her at seven months pregnant.

Norah and Lani become good friends, despite her grumpy misdemeanour at times. However, the most interesting development is her 'relationship' with Kai. He is broody and quite a grumpy arse but there is a simmering attraction between them brewing away. Norah is incredibly hormonal at the moment so this tall, muscly, tattooed man is pushing all her buttons and she is overwhelmed with dirty thoughts every time she is around him.

Kai should not be looking at, let alone thinking about a woman pregnant with another man's child but he would have to be blind to not notice just how beautiful Norah is. There is also the fact that he has a bit of a shady past and knows that he is simply not good enough for her, she deserves to be with someone better anyway.

Norah has some big decisions to make and some of them will be heartbreakingly hard but after going through a lot in her young life so far she knows what she wants and what she has to do to get there.

I couldn't get on board with these characters. I found the typical "broody, uncaring" hero really hard to like. I actually thought Kia was selfish, rude, and self-centered. It wasn't just an act... He just didn't like him. He also didn't really seem to like Norah all that much. He seemed to be bothered by her presence. And Norah... oh Norah.. seems to take it all AND continue to chase after him. All while she is pregnant with another man's baby. A man that doesn't even know he is going to be a father.

To me, Norah was a desperate girl seeking attention from whomever and where ever she could get it. She BEGS Kia for attention. I don't know... but as a woman I don't like it when the "heroine" has to BEG the "hero" for attention. I find a big difference between FIGHTING for a relationship and BEGGING for attention from a man. And while she is chasing this "hero", she is pregnant... And she doesn't even know what she wants to do with the baby.

Um...

How about rather than chase after a man that seems to WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU, you focus on getting your life together. She acts like an immature, spoiled brat throughout most of this book. I didn't like her at all. I was happy with her decision because I thought her daughter was better off with a family that actually cared.

As I started to read this one it seemed a bit familar, but it took me a bit to realize that this series is connected to the author's The O'Learys series. The connection was great, one of the O'Leary siblings dating a member of this new family, the O'Malley's.

Norah was a breath a fresh air. She seemed to know herself despite feeling lost being sent away as a kid. Coming home she needed time and space to figure things out. Norah made a really tough choice with her baby, one that seems to be the right one for her. I loved that she didn't let being pregnant stop her from crushing on Kai, or even pursing him.

I had to laugh at the way that Norah pursued Kai, he wasn't sure what to do about her and the way that she was upfront and even blunt with him. It took a while for Norah to break through the walls that Kai had, but once she did they were great together, Kai coming out of the self imposed shell. Of course Kai screwed things up, but he was able to fix it, with a little help from his mom.

And speaking of Kai's mom, she was a hoot. I loved how she treated Kai, how she welcomed Norah and became great friends with her. But the best was when she let both "kids" know that Mom's always know what is going on, no matter how old they are.

I had received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. The book has since been released.

I will start with the elephant in the room. This is a story that may not resonate with some as it deals with pregnancy and the decisions that need to be made when someone is not ready to be a mother. While this can make a very deep and controversial storyline, it is somewhat glossed over in the story in favor of the romance aspect. This may be hard to digest for some as the story does not dig too far beneath the surface on this topic. In my opinion this is a shame as it would have offered unlimited emotional directions to the story.

For the romance aspect it does deliver. Two people who are drawn together by an instant attraction but a million reasons to stay apart. This part of the story was good as the connection is instant and obvious. There is also a little bit of humour mixed in with Kai's mother.

The physical chemistry is also evident. Where I struggled is how Norah was so eager to explore this aspect so soon after going through what she did. I felt like she did not learn anything from her previous mistakes and was all to eager to jump in to what could have been her next mistake without thinking of the consequences. This left her feeling a little bit immature in my mind. Others may not think so.

At the end of the day I am torn in my opinion. I really liked the romance aspect of the story yet I felt the emotional aspect was under developed. I will have to stay on the fence on this one.

DNF @ 9% - h is pregnant after some fling… she runs away to her hometown and plans to not tell the guy who knocked her up, even tho she likes him…. Contemplates abortion or adoption…. The Hero (not the baby daddy) owns a tattoo parlor and is gruff and rude… (I feel like we’ve read this before 🤔)…. His overbearing disabled mom is about to move in with him… I’m sure that will help along this romance…. Eh. I’m not wild about any of these people or any part of this scenario. 🤷🏼‍♀️ At least it was free!

Oh my gosh I loved this!!!!

Norah is pregnant with the father being MIA and she doesnt know if she even wants to keep it. What Norah does know is that she needs a temporary job, a plan for the future and to get out of the house. She lives with her stubborn dad who always forgets his medication and her brothers. She knows that her family will take care of her and the baby but she wanted something for herself something she earned.

Kai is the boss at one of Norahs brothers work (at a tattoo parlor) and he is trying to adjust having his immobile mom live with him temporarily. She needs a babysitter and some company because he is gone alot of the day and night due to his clients. He needs someone that can take care of his mom while he takes care of everything else.
From the first time Norah saw Kais tattooed body and stone cold face at his parlor her hormones went nuts with lust. When he first saw her pregnant belly he was disgusted but otherwise she was hot and from her eyes to her smile to the laugh he couldnt get out of his he knew he was screwed. Theyw ere bothfalling silently for one another.

“Is your sister trustworthy?
Yeah why
Shes hired”

Norah is enlisted to take care of Kais mom and things just get even more awkward and adorable and just so beautiful.

I love that they built a friendship, then a relationship, then the love and lust came in and i felt connected to them because it was built up.

I was lucky enough to meet the author and she was so nice and I cant wait to read the rest of her books!!

Norah O’Malley has finally come after being shipped off to her aunt’s because her father and brothers did not know how to handle her. Well, surprise for them. She’s 7 months pregnant and completely lost. She needs support and a place to figure out what she’s going to do. Kai is used to compartmentalizing his life so well that nothing overlapped. His life was simple and ultimately lonely but he was fine with not letting anyone in. Because once you did it was inevitable that there would drama and heartache; he wants no part of that ever again.

Normally, I can usually find good things to say about a book no matter how much I liked or didn’t like it. Sadly, I really can’t come up with much besides that the O’Malley’s have an amazing sense of humor and connection that it is what helped me get through the book. AND despite me seriously disliking the characters and the story-line of this book, the author hit on some serious points about adoption and depression that mother’s feel after they have birth and even giving up the baby for adoption.

So, I am not going to criticize or denigrate this book because it could have had great potential. I am only going to say one thing. This book felt more like a young adult with a dash of sex because of how the characters acted and talked. Kai was 30 and it was never truly stated how old Norah was, but guessing, she’s around 24. She acted like her life was over since she was pregnant and all she really wanted was to jump into bed with Kai. Don’t get me wrong Kai was all sorts of hot but it was basically her mission: wear down Kai. There’s more but you’ll see what I mean if you decide to read the book. Normally I would not mention this but the cover is misleading and kind of confusing once I read the book.

Overall, it was not that great to keep my attention nor wanting to continue to the next book (Although, Sean on a motorcycle is kind of tempting. Always a sucker for those motorcycles!!).

I was gifted a copy of this book from the JeepDiva in exchange for an honest review. The opinions and ratings are solely my own.

This book is my first introduction to author, Shannyn Schroeder. I am happy to report that after reading this book I will be checking out more books by Shannyn. Additionally, this book had humor to it. Looking for your next grumpy/sunshine romance then you need to pick up a copy of Under Your Skin.

Norah and Kai could not be more complete opposites. Luckily for them as the saying goes...opposites attract. I will say that in the beginning, I was not such a fan of Kai. He definitely took the role of "grumpy" seriously. Although, his sour attitude did not last long and after that I did warm up to him.

The chemistry between Norah and Kai was a slow burn. Which I was here for it. You know what happens something grows; it grows to the point that it explodes. That is Norah and Kai and their chemistry. I look forward to reading Sean's story next.

Norah O'Malley has returned home to be with her family, knowing she'll need them more than ever with her being pregnant. However, they don't make her feel all that welcome, especially when she won't reveal anything about the baby's father. She's know they're just being overprotective, but if she doesn't do something soon they'll drive her nuts. Knowing she needs to confront the past to move forward with her life, Norah is determined to tell the father about the pregnancy and find a job. Unfortunately, finding a job doesn't seem all that promising until the handsome Kai Ellis makes her an offer she can't refuse.

Kai Ellis can't handle living under the same roof as his mother, but she has no where to go after having knee surgery. Hiring someone to care for her seems a great idea, but having Norah O'Malley in his house could prove dangerous, especially when he's so attracted to her. Can he finally overcome his past to have a relationship with someone? Or will his troubled past always haunt him?

I always like discovering new to me authors, and this first book in a new series for Ms. Schroeder has me looking forward to reading more of her books, and most especially more of this series. Right from the beginning, this book was entertaining, fast-paced and captivated my undivided attention by what the heroine is going through. She's so young to be having a baby, and it isn't easy for her because her overprotective brothers.

The dialogue was intense due to the main characters back stories, the decision Norah has to make about her baby's future, and what's holding Kai back from pursuing a long term relationship with Norah. It isn't easy for him to overcome his past, especially when he feels indebted to a mate of his. Moreover, I liked the playful banter between the hero and heroine. Certainly, Norah keeps Kai on his toes. She's relentless in her mischievousness to flirt with the hero, and get him to let his guard down because she finds him interesting and worth getting to know.

Both the main characters had compelling back stories, and it made them the interesting hero and heroine that they were. Norah has always felt separate from her family, and it was palpable why she felt that way after what they did to her so soon after her mother died. They let her down when she needed them most. She's also strong, brave and faces a tough decision on deciding what's best for her baby? Can she raise the little one on her own? Or will she give her baby to a couple that will be able to provide a better life for her? She faces a lot of pressure from her family, but in the end, it was her decision. Did she make the right one? Honestly, it was hard not to shed a tear for the heroine.

While Kai, he's done well for himself to overcome his past, even though he's still dealing with it. He's hard-working, kind and caring and would do anything for his family, even though he loves living on his own and having his mother living under his roof is a nightmare he could do without. I could understand why Kai was loyal to his friends, but it seemed like one of his friends kept continuing to drag him down with the guy's desire not to change his criminal ways. So, I liked the decision Kai made about the guy in the end.

Nicely-detailed sex scenes spice up the story, even though it takes a while for Kai and Norah to finally consummate their relationship because of Norah's pregnancy. However, once there's nothing holding either of them back, their relationship spills onto the pages and does justice to this couple's intense chemistry, which is there from the moment they meet. The moment where Norah feels an instant attraction, although Kai was surly and did his best to steer her away.

Overall, Ms. Schroeder has penned a wonderful novel in this first book of her For Your Love series where the secondary characters -- especially Kai's mother -- entertained me almost as much as the main characters. The growing friendship between Kai's mother and Norah is sweet, and I liked that Norah won over his mother almost immediately, because it seemed she's not a woman that's easily pleased when it comes to people in the hero's life. The way this story ended was satisfying, as Kai makes every effort to prove to Norah that he wants her in his life. I would recommend Under Your Skin by Shannyn Schroeder, if you enjoy a story that encompasses remarkable characters, well-written dialogue and a storyline that will keep you flipping the pages quickly to see how the couple's relationship will progress.

Norah O'Malley has finally returned to Chicago, after being sent to live with her Aunt in Boston when she was 12. But Norah has not come alone; Norah is pregnant! And her brothers (Jimmy, Tommy, Sean and Kevin) all want the hit the guy that has gotten her pregnant. But Norah is not telling them who it is…until she tells the guy (Avery) that she is pregnant. But being home has brought up a lot of resentment for Norah and she couldn't stand to spend long period around her father; whom she feels abandoned her without a backwards though, so while looking for a job that will hire a nursing school dropout, pregnant girl! But Norah has a lot of decisions to make, to start with, telling her baby's father that she is pregnant, dealing with her family and deciding if its keeping the baby or giving it up for adoption is the best option? Needing a break from all of her thoughts, she decides to take lunch to her brother Tommy, she meets his ice-cold boss Kai Ellis and boy! Does he not seem happy to see her or help her find a job!

Kai Ellis is an ex-con whom started his own tattoo shop and after a long road he has made it a success, but the only way he has managed to do that is by compartmentalizing his life, business, friends and family, and none of them may cross! It has been the only way he has been able to function; but that is all coming to an end, when his mother has to move in with him after her knee replacement surgery. Despite his best efforts to get her to go into rehab, now she is driving him crazy. But when Kai remembers that Tommy's pregnant sister is looking for a job, it seems like the perfect fit!

Slowly Kai and Norah's relationship turns from strictly business to more; Kai helps Norah talk through her problems, takes her to the hospital give birth and then their relationship truly turns on its head when they kiss. But when Kai freaks out and breaks up with Norah it seems to be the end for these two…or is it?!

I will be honest! This book will rip out your heart and you will never be the same again! I don't think I have ever fell more empathy for the female lead as I do in this book. First he mother dies, abandoned by her family (at least that’s how she feels) when she is 12, Then she is pregnant by a guy she is scared to tell. Her brothers and Father are less than supportive and now she has to decide what is best for her child. Add to that meeting a guy who lights her up and he has as much warmth as an iceberg! I mean come on! You have to love her. Now when it comes to the other characters, well you can't help but love them! But I have to admit that I'm struggling to like Norah's father and brother Kevin! But maybe in the next book.

On to the basics; the writing and the plot were smooth, brilliant and gripping and I honestly could not get enough of the story! The author has taken a story with such complexity and made it such a heartbreaking and heartwarming story all in one!

I give Under Your Skin 5 stars!

Judging a Book by it's Cover:
With foreheads touching, the models seem to portray an intimate desperation. Background muddies up the composition slightly, Font choices are fine, title has a subtle pop. I chose this book due to previous books read and enjoyed from this author, hoping I'd like it as much.

Looking Deeper:
Third-person POV.
Kai was very difficult to like at first and it really took me quite a while to warm up to him. He has a past which haunts him, enough luggage to bring down a commuter jet, socialization issues, and lacks a strong verbal presence. He likes his space and all aspects of his life should remain separate from the others. His quiet and peace is shattered when he has to move his mother in while she recovers from having a knee replacement. But with his busy and crazy work schedule, he needs help taking care of his mom.
Norah is pushy and bossy, but not always in a bad way. After being away from her family for ten years, she returns... very pregnant. Not outing the absent baby-daddy causes a ton of tension in the family home between her and the men (her four older brothers and dad). Needing an out, she tries to find a job, even in her condition. These two slowly develop a relationship, albeit grudgingly on his part. It was fun to read as she would wiggle closer and he'd just freeze up, unsure what to do next. Lani was a fun, charismatic character. Many of the secondary characters were enjoyable. Dialogue was good. The cast interaction was entertaining. The plot had plenty dimension, moderate dynamics, and just enough depth. There were a few emotional points in it - but as an adoptee (closed adoption) and a birth mother of an adoptee (open adoption), parts of the process and aftermath as written got to me more than it might others. There was not a lot of conflict to overcome, mostly self-inflicted issues that could have / should have been taken care of long ago. The sex scenes were very "Dick and Jane" feeling in their narration, no warmth or emotion was conveyed to make it feel real. There was very little predictability. In fact, throughout the book I'd expected certain things to happen when, in fact, nothing ever did. There were a scant few minor surprises however. The ending felt awful sudden and rushed, but it at least provided an implied HEA and sneak-peek into the following O'Malley's book.
Overall, I'm still a bit on the fence over this one, but think I'd recommend it to others.

Under Your Skin by Shannyn Schroeder is the 1st book in her new For Your Love series. I loved the O’Leary series by Schroeder, and I am happy to say that Under Your Skin is a wonderful start to a new series. We even get a member of the O’Leary family in this book; Moira O’Leary is dating Jimmy O’Malley, who is the brother of our heroine.

Norah O’Malley is our heroine, who has returned home after 10 years. Norah had been sent at the age of 12 to live with her aunt, since her father and 4 brothers could not take care of her. Now she is pregnant, and comes home to be with her family, as she decides what to do about her pregnancy. We meet Norah and her family from the start, giving us a chance to learn about the O’Malley’s.

Norah was a great heroine; sweet, fun, beautiful, independent and determined to live her life the way she wants to. She decides she needs to get a job, as she is bored with being home. Visiting her brother Tommy, at his job in a tattoo parlor, Norah meets the boss, Kai, our hero.

Kai has had a rough childhood, spending much time in gangs, and eventually going to jail. But he has learned from his past mistakes, and now runs a good business, and determined to keep himself clean. Norah begins to crush on Kai, but he wants nothing to do with her, as he feels he is unworthy. With his mother coming home from the hospital, Kai needed someone to take care of her during the day. When he is desperate, he hires Norah, which will turn into a mistake…..a good mistake.

A major part of this story was Norah making difficult decisions on what to do about her baby. The father of her child makes an appearance, and they remain as friends only. Norah will stand firm that she will do what is best for the baby. Very nicely written.

This was a very slow build romance, which was also fun watching Norah do all she can to seduce Kai. It was nice to see Norah become friends with Moira, her first friend since she came home. I enjoyed meeting all her brothers, with Jimmy and Tommy my favorites. I look forward to future stories on them all, though there will be no story on Jimmy, since he and Moira had theirs in the O’Leary series (you do need to read that series). Kai’s mom was also a great character, as she was fun at times. . I loved Norah, and did like Kai, but his constant refusal to open himself to love was annoying at times. He had to let go of his past to move forward with Norah.

Under Your Skin was an enjoyable read, great characters and very well written by Shannyn Schroeder. I suggest you read this book and join the fun when we get more stories on the O’Malleys.

Returning home to Chicago pregnant and in disgrace, Norah O’Malley is struggling to find her footing. She’s afraid to tell the baby’s father about her current state and her overbearing family is smothering her with their requests. Getting a wild hair has Norah walking into a tattoo shop where she is knocked flat by instant attraction to shop owner Kai Ellis. Gruff Kai Ellis doesn’t want to be attracted to Norah. He has a past and she is seven months pregnant. When suddenly left with the need to hire a daytime nurse for his mother, he turns to Norah for a solution. Both Kai and Norah figure out that time and proximity can solve all problems and lead the way to love.

Verdict: This is book one of the “For your Love” series, and man where there a lot of things going on. So there were several main things being addressed in this book. First, Norah has an extremely complicated relationship with her family and somewhat present baby daddy make it tough on her to get an emotional bead. She almost reads as manic as her behaviors and feeling swing all over the place. The flip side is that her extreme attitude changes can be attributed to pregnancy hormones, but I really feel like she was all over the place. Kai also has a complicated relationship with his family. While his attitudes don’t really shift around like Norah’s, it makes him seem completely cold and unfeeling from time to time. Oddly enough, sticking someone who has extreme attitude swings with someone who doesn’t emotionally change at all worked. I liked Kai and Norah together because Norah forced Kai to emote while Kai force Norah to calm down.

Something to keep in mind, Kai and Norah’s relationship almost took second banana to Norah’s huge decision making when it comes to the wellbeing of her baby. I actually enjoyed this part of the book more than the interactions between Kai and Norah. Many romance books gloss over young single pregnant heroines and do not address the level of stress they go through when deciding if they should keep the baby or not. In this case, Norah recognizes that she is in no place to keep her baby, but still wants to do everything possible to ensure the baby’s overall health and welfare. Despite heavy pressure to from her family and the baby’s father to keep the baby, she to give the baby up for adoption and takes an active role in choosing the perfect family. It was incredibly heart wrenching to read. I definitely want to read the next and see what happens to Norah’s brothers.

Blood Is Thicker Than Ink. . .

Norah O'Malley has been alone for a long time. It's been ten years since her father and four brothers shipped her off to be raised by her aunt. Seven months since she's seen the guy who got her pregnant--who still doesn't know. And it's two weeks since she came home to Chicago and discovered none of her family wants to talk--or listen.

She never expected to walk into a tattoo shop seven months pregnant and get her socks knocked off by instant attraction. She can't even see her socks. But Kai Ellis is big and gruff and sexy as hell, and if he has a past, well, so does she. Even more, Kai knows how to listen so that Norah feels just a little less alone . . .

All the chemistry in the world can't help Norah make her decisions. And no sizzle of desire will make Kai believe in happy endings. But a little time with someone who understands might just change everything . . .

Review:

I am having a hard time writing a review for this one. I liked parts and did not like others. I do have to say have tissues ready! I was a blubbering mess when it came to the baby and what her ultimate choice for what to do with it. The emotional quality is one of things I liked best about it. The Author made me really feel for what was happening with these characters. What I did not like is that they are ultimately young and like a lot of young people, it is about me and they don't always make the best impression or smart choices. I think in Norah's case she was sent away to her aunt, but she really was not a mother figure. So those things that mothers help with and guide with did not happen in Norah's case and so she comes off young and at times selfish. I think she does the hard and right thing by the baby though. Like Norah, Kai is missing a parent (his father) during his formative years, though it sounds as if he was a little better off without the dad. But he too suffers from being young, selfish and very protective of his heart. Overall, I liked the story and thought the Author did a great job with her writing and trying to show layers to these characters.

Norah comes home for the first time in 10 years since her Mothers death. Her Dad and Brothers sent her off to her aunts to live as they weren't sure they could protect her from all that's bad in the world. However her aunt didn't get that job right either since Norah comes home 7 months pregnant and her Aunt kicks her out. Norah hasn't told the baby's father yet and shes stuck in a rutt with no job and no money to pay for her fee's if she continues her nursing degree after the baby is born. The baby situation isn't all straight forward though because the Father was more of a f*** buddy rather than a boyfriend so Nora doesn't even love him and she has doubts about going it alone.
Norah's brother Tommy works in a tattoo store and this is where she meets Kai the owner of the shop and it's a bit of a mutual attraction. Kai is a bit of a closed book with a bit of a bad boy past, he doesn't know what he wants in life so tends to separate parts of his life from the real world. After Kai hires Norah to look after his Mum following her hip surgery he can't ignore the attraction that's brewing between them. Can Norah and Kai come together and work it out?

I kinda felt agitated whilst reading this and I hated feeling so because I loved this story line and it has great potential. The first 20% of the book was so confusing in terms of to many characters speaking and being introduced at once kind of thing. POV is a killer for me when it's not split into chapters and the first 20% there was several character switches on the same pages which made it very confusing as to who's pov it was. The author has repeatedly through this book switched POV in the space of a paragraph with no warning. Although it wasn't so bad after 20% as we mostly had it switching between Norah and Kai which was easier to work out, however I think it could have been better executed if it had been split by chapter POV.
The ending was really abrupt as well so I would liked to have saw some sort of epilogue or longer ending since I noticed the next book is a different character. I gave this 3 stars because I did love the story and Norah and Kai are both lovable characters.

I received this book from Goodreads in exchange for a review.

From heartbreak to hope and happiness, this story will make you believe in happily ever after.

When Norah O’Malley returns home, she is pregnant and no boyfriend in sight. To make matters worse, her brothers are giving her the silent treatment. In an attempt to lighten the mood with her brother Tommy, she takes a plate of treats to his place a work, a tattoo parlor. But when Tommy’s boss, Kai Ellis walks in, the mood shifts. Kai has his own problems… a Mom just out of surgery who refuses to go to rehab to recover.

Kai has his life just the way he wants it: work, hockey and poker. Nothing overlaps, each area of his life is separate and distinct. By keeping all parts of his life compartmentalized, he thinks he can control the fallout, if there ever is any. Because Kai is an ex-con. Even though he has been toeing the line for 10 years, he doesn’t take chances. He can’t afford to.

But now his life is about to change in a most unexpected way. Since his sister can’t look after his Mom while she recovers, he has no choice but to take her in. The only problem with that idea is that his Mom needs constant help, and she is driving Kai crazy. The solution…hire Norah. Slowly, the parts of his life that never touched, are starting to blend into each other, and Kai isn’t sure if he likes it or not. Even worse, how can he be attracted to a pregnant girl?

And Norah, fun, flirty Norah, is facing some of the hardest decisions of her life. Not only does she have to tell the father if her baby that she is pregnant, she also has to decide if putting her baby up for adoption is the right thing. One thing is for sure, she wants a better life for her daughter than the one she had.

Who would have ever thought that Kai, big, silent and sexy Kai, would be the one to comfort her when she hurts and give her hope when she thought none existed. But can Norah break through the bands of steel Kai has around his heart?

Under Your Skin was a very entertaining book. It’s a slight departure from the books that I usually read. The heroine is a 22-year-old named Norah O’Malley. She moves back home and surprises her family with the news that she is 6 months pregnant. She has 3 older brothers and a father who are all over protective and not happy about her situation. After her mother died when she was younger, Norah was sent away to live with her aunt so she wouldn’t be negatively influenced by her older brothers. That’s ironic to say the least.

As Norah is trying to figure out her future, she ends up working for one of her brother’s bosses. His name is Kai Ellis and he owns the tattoo parlor where her brother works. Kai’s mom is recovering from surgery and Kai needs someone to look after her for a few months. Kai is a very complicated guy. He used to run with a gang and spent some time in jail. Now, he makes it a point to keep certain parts of his life separate from each other. Consequently, mixing business with pleasure is not his choice. He and Norah attempt to avoid their attraction for multiple reasons but eventually they give in to temptation. Norah’s pregnancy prompts Kai to pursue alternative ways to satisfy their sexual desires and that makes for some extremely hot interactions.

Kai and Norah are good for each other. Unfortunately, Kai doesn’t think that he is worthy of someone like Norah. By the end of the book, they have both decided to make some drastic changes to their lives that you may not see coming. I couldn’t help but root for their happy ending. They both have gone through a lot and deserve to be happy and loved. The supporting cast played a huge role in how everything turns out. I especially liked Kai’s mother. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Under Your Skin is an engaging love story by new to be author Shannyn Schroeder. This is the first book in her brand new series For Your Love, and it can be enjoyed as a standalone. The series is centered around the Chicago O'Malley's, a complicated family made up of four brothers, a sister, and a father that prefers to remain in the background. This book is about nursing student Norah O'Malley, and how she finds love.

At the tender age of twelve, Norah was sent to live with her aunt in Boston after her mother passed away. She returns home ten years later, and seven months pregnant, determined to make a new life for herself. She has to get to know her brothers once again and decide upon the future of her unborn child. She meets tattoo artist and business owner Kai Ellis, through her brother Tommy, who works for Kai. They share an instant attraction, which slowly develops into much more. Kai hires Norah to help with his mother's recuperation from knee surgery, which results in them seeing each other almost every day. Kai's past has always been a thorn in his side, but due to his love for Norah, he is able to finally move forward and make a commitment to her.

I liked this book. Norah and her brothers have an interesting dynamic, and I liked how Ms. Schroeder provided snippets of information about each one of them throughout the story. The brothers O'Malley are a protective group, and they will do whatever is necessary to keep Norah safe. I felt Norah's struggle and teared up as she meandered through the adoption process. Norah and Kai are an interesting twosome and their sexy times are quite hot. I liked them both as individuals and as a couple. The ending was a little abrupt, and I felt that there was much more to say about Norah and Kai's future. Overall a solid read.

ARC REVIEW

This is a start for a new series for Shannyn Schroeder, it is a spin-off of the O'Leary series. I have mixed feeling about his book. It was just ok, the hesitant brooding guy, and the girl who is seven months pregnant. The chemistry is there between Kai and Norah.
Kai has compartmentalized his life he doesn't mix family with friends or with work so when a gorgeous woman walks into his tattoo parlour he immediately pushes her away especially since she's the sister to one of his employees and very obviously pregnant.
Norah is desperate for attention, the way she was raised she always felt like the outsider and unloved. She knows her brothers love her but she feels the sting of abandonment when she is forced to come home pregnant and her brothers are all mad at her. Norah is dealing with a lot of problems right now, she has had to put of finishing school, she's trying to figure out a way to tell the baby daddy he's going to be a daddy, keep her brothers from going after said baby daddy, and she is having to make a heartbreaking decision of whether or not she should keep her baby.
The first half mainly concentrates on whether or not she go with adoption, and Kai dealing with having his Mom underfoot after knee surgery. Lani, Kai's Mom, was really annoying at the beginning very passive aggressive but as soon as Norah and her were introduced she was less annoying and more amusing. Norah brings Kai's walls crashing down the friendship that they start with really sets the tone for the book. Norah knows that Kai is attracted to her and she enjoys the attention, she single and seven months along with brothers who are guys she hasn't felt attractive in a while and Kai makes her feel that way.

Overall, it was ok. I really wasn't in the mood for so much drama when I read this, but there was somethings I liked about it.

Dark and edgy tones on the tale, with a silver lining of hope, as Norah and Kai are going through some growing pains, fumbling, yet never falling, until they are falling for each other.
I liked how the story was spread over time. Norah's pregnancy put the brakes on the attraction Kai and Norah have for each other and gave them time to slowly, quietly, and deeply to get to know each other. They both are at the doorway to a new chapter in their lives and the unexpected source of support that they for each other is helping them stumble through it. The tale is told in 3rd person point of view, yet the author has captured the angst and blues of the New Adult genre well. The hope, humor, and sass Norah have is refreshing giving the story lighter moments of laughter and smiles. The development and growth of the characters are palpable. The passion and fervor between Kai and Norah high and hot, yet achingly beautiful and somehow fragile.
The families Shannyn Schroeder creates in her series are always filled with energy, never perfect since no family is, they have their problems and issues, yet able to be the for each other, and support each when the time of need arise.
The imperfection of the characters, the fails, and blunders make them easy to relate to, likable and charming, appealing and enjoyable. They are all strong characters, that carry the story well, they pull you into their world, and makes you part of it. This is the kind of story that you stay up all night reading because it is hard to put down, the kind of series that you long for the next installment as soon as you finish one. It breaks your heart a bit, it makes you smile, and at the end of the story, sigh.

Norah O'Malley grew up with four brothers across the street from the O'Leary's (another gorgeous series from Schroeder). She was sent away in her early teens to live with an aunt because her dad had no idea how to raise a girl and the boys were just causing trouble. The only brother who acted as a father figure was Jimmy and he continues to protect her. She's got a bit of a "situation" happening with the baby bump so she returned home to catch her barrings and make some choices. Considering the choice she has to make I'd say Norah is far more mature than most people in their twenties and seems to have a very good out look on her life. She's strong, mature, capable, sassy and confident. She can hold her own when it comes to her boss, Kai the tattoo parlor owner and boss to her brother Tommy. He's a brooding tough guy who's seen the dark side of the world and is afraid to make wrong choices. He will always deny it but there's a loving sweet man under all the muscles and dark skin. Kai and Norah are drawn to each other as two people struggling to move along in this world but together they find happiness. As a big fan of Schroeder I have read almost all of her books but this just might be my favorite. She's written funny and quirky with her Hot and Nerdy stories but this is everything a book should be: intelligent, challenging, funny and gave me a few tears. I was tickled pink to have been given an advanced reader copy through Netgalley for my honest review. If you enjoy this book pick up the O'Leary series, say hi to Jimmy and Moira.

The story starts out with Norah being seven months pregnant. Her mother died when Norah was young which left her father and brothers to raise her, going into her teen years her brother Jimmy knew being in a house with a bunch of boys wasn't good for Norah so they sent her to live with her aunt. Norah lived with her aunt for ten years and after becoming pregnant she came back home to live with her brothers and father. She never understood why they pushed her away to live with her aunt.

Kia owns a tattoo shop where Norah's brother works. He's a hot, selfish, Ex-con. Throughout the story we start to understand why he's the way he is. Kia's mom just had knee surgery and needed a place to stay. This is where the story gets better because he can't take care of his mom and run a Tattoo Parlor so he hires Norah to come and take of his mom.

Norah is trying to break down Kia's walls. Even seven months pregnant she try's to look hot and Kia notices but doesn't feel it right.

Even though this story started out a little weird to me I understand and commend the author for writing it. Being a single mom is hard and the choices Norah had to make were hard. Should she keep the baby and raise it as a single mom? Can she raise a baby and go back to school to be a nurse? Or would life be better for the baby if a loving family adopted her? The story was heartbreaking and intense at times but the author did a great job with telling the story. Oh and let's not forget the sex scenes are hot. Reviewed on behalf of Once Upon A Alpha.

Norah is 8 months pregnant. She has no schooling, no job, the father of her baby doesn't know about the baby, and she's moving back home to her father and brother for support. Her life is no where near perfect but she's gonna do what she has to to make it work.

Kai keeps work. home, family, and friends all in separate compartments of his life. Nothing overlaps and that works out great for him. Until his mom needs to stay with him while she recovers, she needs someone to help her while he's out, and his employee at the shop happens to be one of Norah's brothers. He's far from perfect and knows Norah doesn't need him in her life, but he listens and can't help the attraction for her.

Norah can't help but fall for Kai. No one understands what she's going through and no one listens to her. Not the baby's father, her brothers, and definitely not her father. Kai offers her a job that is perfect for her now. But what happens when their attraction starts to get out of control? What happens when Kai's secrets start interfering with his life now? Will they make it through everything and still have a chance?

I liked this story. I am sure some will hate it and others will love it. What I liked was Norah’s ability to know what she wanted and her ability to pursue what she thought would be best for herself and her unborn child. I liked the fact that Kai had the tenacity to remake his life after spending time in jail. He did compartmentalize his life without overlapping various aspects but it worked for him and he had reasons for living as he did.

Norah is a minx. When she meets Kai she is 7 months pregnant, has just returned home and is lonely. When she sees Kai she likes what she sees and, I think, feels safe flirting with him because she is pregnant. It takes her some time to break through his barriers but eventually they do set up a rapport that leads to friendship and more. Was it realistic? Yes. At least it seemed so to me. The two brought something to one another that was missing and grew as people as a result of their relationship.

This is the first in a new series by this author and stands alone. I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Norah O'Malley has been very lonely ever since her father and four brothers sent her away to be raised by her aunt. It has convinced her that she's unwanted in her own family. Now she's back home, pregnant with a baby daddy that she hasn't seen in seven months. Never did she think that she would have such a powerful reaction to her brothers' boss when she visits at the tattoo shop. Kai Ellis has past scars that has made him living with iron control, and compartmentalizes the people in his life in different boxes so they don't overlap. He doesn't believe in happy endings, but he never counted on the pregnant Norah getting past his walls. Will these two broken people heal together, or will they destroy each other completely?

This story was emotional on more than one level. The character development is good, with some very entertaining cast of secondaries. Shannyn Schroeder does a great job writing realistic emotions that seeped out of my kindle to make me feel angst. The simmering chemistry bubbling below the surface finally boils to smokin' hot sexy scene goodness, and well placed humor had me laughing hard. I'm excited to read more by this author in the near future!

I received an arc from Netgalley for an honest review.

I give this 3 1/2 stars, it's almost a 4 star read for me except I wish the author dug a bit deeper, having said that I did enjoy this story and I do think it is worth reading. In this story we meet Norah who is very pregnant and she's moved back home, and is getting ready to have her baby. This was not your run of the mill, I'm pregnant, I'm going to have my baby, and everything is peachy, which I usually quite enjoy :-).......this story was both light and serious in it's chosen topic and quite well written but there where a few holes that I would have liked a bit more filled in, not enough for it to disrupt the story, but because I liked the story I wanted a bit more. Overall I like both M/C's, and the storyline. I wish the ending was a bit longer, and maybe even an epilogue, I felt like the author got us invested in the characters but then kind of left me hanging, not in a cliff-hanger way but more in a we're together, and the story is done way.

This book was a delight to read, at first I wasn’t for sure if I was going to like it especially being a single mom in my early 20’s & never thought once about giving any of my kids up. But the more I read the more I understood Norah’s decision, at first I was like really (sarcastically) especially how Norah wasn’t upset when she gave birth to her child & handed it over to her adoptive parents but later I was truly feeling for her. The way she went after Kai had me yelling go girl, & Kai don’t even get me started on him I was really really liking him & then he did his crap I just wanted to go through the book & wring his neck, shake some sense into him & tell him your past is your past. Kai’s mother Lani, she was a hoot, any girl would want her for mother of her boyfriend, she had me in stitches. If you are looking for a fast pace romance then this isn’t it, Under Your Skin was a slow pace romance, with Kai fighting his feelings for Norah all the way.

Norah O'Malley is pregnant and has returned home to figure out what to do next. Thinking her brothers would support, she is right in a sense but she is also feeling alone and afraid. Norah is trying to find a job, but seven months pregnant does not make it easy. When she meets Kai Ellis, her brothers boss, he is about as friendly as petting a porcupine. However, when he offers her a job to help with his mother everything changes.

Kai feels Norah is off limits, one she is pregnant, and two she is his employee's sister. The chemistry though is sizzling between them though is making it difficult to resist. Kai though has walls erected so high it could touch the clouds, Norah is determined to break them down but will he allow it.

This was an unexpected surprise. Kai is a bit of a mystery with his gruff behavior and closed off personality, you fall for him though hook, line and sinker. I loved Norah, she is a unique character who brings a smile to your face. Had a few surprises I did not expect, love a plot line that is different.

Four Great Stars! Norah returns home, pregnant and with no boyfriend. On top of that her family is giving her the silent treatment. Tommy her brother takes her to the tattoo parlor where he works and she meets Kai his boss. Kai is an ex-con with his own set of problems and a mother who refuses to go to rehab. Kai and Nora have an instant attraction. Kai hires Norah to care for his mother and Norah ends up turning his world upside down. Norah has to make some tough descsions about the baby and when to tell the baby's father. Will Norah give in to her attraction to Kai and what will she decide about the baby? This is a great, enjoyable read and the story is well written. Norah and Kai were great characters. This is the first book in the For Your Love Series and I am looking forward to the next book in this series. I recommend it!
