More Fuel You

What we eat has a huge impact on our physical and mental health, and on our performance in our chosen sport, whether we’re elite-level athletes or enthusiastic amateurs. But, with so much information out there, how do we choose a way of eating that is right for us?

More Fuel You is a clear and authoritative guide to making the most of your nutrition. Leading sports dietitian Renee McGregor looks at fuelling needs for sporting participation, training and competition, and analyses some popular diet options, including low-carbohydrate, vegan and intermittent fasting.

But this is not just another sports nutrition book. Renee recommends a holistic view: by understanding the human body and being self-aware, you can find the ideal nutritional approach for you personally. Significantly, Renee also discusses areas of sports nutrition in populations that are often overlooked, including women’s health and the menopause, healthy ageing, and the inclusion of individuals who don’t necessarily conform to the stereotype of an athlete, such as people living with chronic health conditions.

Whatever your race, genetics, gender, age, socio-economic status, body type or ability, it’s important to be your own athlete, fuel appropriately for your body and enjoy what you do.

Whether you’re a world-class or real-world athlete, if you’re serious about sport and nutrition, you can’t afford not to read this book.

Renee gets it. This is a fantastic evidence-based book in a time of misinformation overload. And importantly, Renee also has a deep understanding and respect for the individuality of nutrition.

The final chapter should be essential reading for all human beings.

Renee's voice and kind spirit made this an especially enjoyable listening experience.

My favorite excerpt: "Not all public health messaging applies to you."

In More Fuel You, Renee offers a good introduction to different approaches and strategies for nutrition. In all honesty, I was a bit daunted by the prospect of reading and reviewing a nutrition book, imaging it to be quite dense and more like a textbook, but that’s not true of this book at all; it’s really accessible and readable.

This would be a great starter book for anyone interested in nutrition. It doesn’t give you a detailed breakdown of what your food intake should look like, or have any sample menus. Instead, Renee offers her informed and honest perspective on a variety of different approaches, and makes it easier for you to identify which might work best for your body and your energy needs.

The first half discusses general nutritional needs. The second half then considers a range of approaches to nutrition (things like low-carb diets, veggie and vegan athletes, and intermittent fasting), and different requirements (for example for female athletes or older athletes). The result is a very broad overview which might be less useful for working out exactly what you need to eat after a training session, but is incredibly helpful for considering your overall diet. I would have appreciated a short conclusion after the discussion of each approach with Renee’s professional judgement on how effective/appropriate it is, but later found that information in the conclusion instead; the approach seems to be about giving the reader the information and letting them make their own conclusions. There are stories from athletes throughout, and I appreciated their openness in sharing what had/hadn’t worked for them and how changing strategy had benefitted them.

What really came across for me was how sensitive and individualised Renee’s advice is. She acknowledges that different approaches work for different people, and doesn’t try to offer a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s refreshing to read a nutritional book that doesn’t try to sell a specific diet, but instead acknowledges the pros and cons of many different approaches and ultimately highlights the importance of eating a diet that’s in line with your values as well as what works best for your body. The whole discussion felt very nuanced; at one point Renee does touch on the importance of eating ethically, but acknowledges the sheer difficulty of making consistent ethical choices.

I really appreciated the sensitivity which Renee writes with. Food is such a difficult topic and comes with so much baggage for so many people, but Renee offers her advice with compassion and empathy. More Fuel You is a great guide to help you understand how to make appropriate choices with food that will work for you, and maybe to understand when it’s time to be flexible and try a new approach to nutrition.

More Fuel You provides concise and clear nutrition advice for any aspiring sportsperson.
The book concentrates starts by clearly explaining the fundamentals of nutrition before
discussing more specific diets and nutritional scenarios.

The primary strength of the book is that the author takes quite a holistic approach
to nutrition. There are no detailed meal plans or precise weekly targets for eating
certain types of food, if you are looking for that then look elsewhere. There is
instead an understanding that everyone eats differently and what's important is
understanding the fundamentals of a well-balanced athlete's diet.

I enjoyed reading the rebuttals of other dietary approaches (for example, fasting or low-carb diets).
The arguments presented were quite convincing about why they might produce immediate results
but ultimately not make much sense or provide any advantage to an athlete.
These studies also reinforce well the earlier chapters about fundamentals, as the
author clearly links back to explain why each fad diet violates a key principle.

There was just one strange case study where someone from the publishing team - unknown
to the author - describes the miraculous nature of his low-carb diet.
I have no idea how this came to be in the book
but it really stuck out for me as not following the key narrative. McGregor explains
that the science of a low-carb diet doesn't make sense and including this case study where
extreme feats of endurance are undertaken on a poor nutritional base seems contrary to all
the rest of the solid advice.

The chapters about nutrition for women and older athletes were also timely despite
not being in either of these categories myself. Again they provided a great building
point on the fundamentals with specific general advice to the specific challenges
that each of these groups faces.

Nutrition is clearly an important part of athletic performance and the book serves
as a great foundation for understanding how to get to grips with the matter. Despite being
a complicated and scientific field McGregor writes in an understandable and approachable
way so that anyone will be able to apply her lessons to their own training.

A very clear explanation of diet for athletes, and very useful application to individuals and different populations - female, masters . Highly recommended.

More Fuel You caught my eye as I have an interest in food and outdoor activities, but also because it addresses diet for the masters athlete. I'm a keen runner rather than a serious athlete but nevertheless am beginning to feel I need every bit of help I can get to recover after a long run as I get older.
The first section gives clear explanations of what our body needs in the way of food to fuel both good health and active sport in some detail. It draws on recent research which challenged some of my long held understanding such as eating regularly throughout recovery rather than only have a short time window for recovery food. So I've found it good for bringing my understanding up to date. It then goes on to look at various specific diets with the pros and cons, linked to athletes stories which help to illustrate who might and when to consider such diets. For anyone looking to follow a specific diet (low carb, plant based, and others) then I think this would be a great source of advice.
In section 2 McGregor looks at the Female and Masters athletes. As mentioned above I'm what is considered a Masters runner and I found some good advice here on how our needs change and how to eat to support staying active. The books arrival in the post coincided with both my grown up daughters visiting, both accomplished athletes in orienteering and mountain running, one a sports science graduate. Their reactions were both (a) ah, Renee McGregor, that'll be good, and (b) they were already aware of her work on female runners throughout the various life stages, which gives me the confidence to say this book will be very useful for them too.
This approach to addressing the individual runner goes well beyond adult - female - masters as it addresses a whole diversity of situations. People who may be fasting, who aren't able bodied, have different cultural background, chronic illness or food intolerances.
The book is easy to read and the author is a 'leading sports and eating disorder specialist dietician with twenty years experience working in clinical and performance nutrition'. This book will appeal to you if you are active and have any interest at all in what you eat. Even though there are specific sections applicable to me I found it a really interesting read throughout. I particularly liked an aspect of making this subject accessible to such a diverse range of people and an approach to encourage people of all background to be more active.

I don’t think I’ve read a book on sports nutrition before, and I found this to be very interesting. My main interests are in martial arts and climbing/mountaineering, along with running, but even when in more focused training phases I have paid more attention to the physical training elements than the nutritional. However my activity levels took a slide during the pandemic and have not fully recovered, so I am looking to take a bit more of a holistic approach in order to get back into shape.

The book gives a good overview of food’s role as food for our bodies, and uses that as a basis for evaluating some key trends within sports nutrition. The thoughts on low carb/high fat and plant based diets were very interesting to me, and there is an important message about the importance of carbohydrates and their role in long term health and recovery.

The other recurring theme that really stuck out at me is that your weight is something of a secondary factor unless you are medically over or under weight, and in particular that an attempt to lose a few more pounds to keep to a target/competing weight may cost you more in energy, recovery, and power than it gains you by having less mass to carry around.

This is one that I suspect I’ll be reading more than once as I digest its details (pun unavoidable), and I’d strongly recommend it as a book that appears to take a pragmatic and well informed view on the subjects that it tackles.

This is a serious book for serious athletes. The nutritional advice is based on solid science but is understandable, and always practical. It’s never proscriptive, rather, enables informed decisions about food, and a deeper understanding of how what we eat impacts performance and health.
Split into two parts, the first part looks at the role of nutrition for the athlete, with specific chapters on: low carb, plant based, and calorie controlled diets, plus one on intermittent fasting. The second part of the book focuses on the specific dietary requirements of the individual and what can go wrong. There are numerous helpful case studies, and whole chapters focusing on the needs of female and older athletes.
Highly recommended for anyone serious about sport.

Very interesting book which brings information from different studies together with regards to nutrition and athletes. I felt the advice within the book could be used by athletes at all levels, although as the book pointed out, every athlete is an individual so different dietary plans will suit different people and extra help may be needed to find the correct plan for yourself.
If nutrition is of interest to you as an athlete of any kind and at any level, this book will definitely be of interest to you.

The nutritional advice in this book is incredibly clearly explained and backed up by science. It really unpicks the nutritional needs that athletes of various shapes and sizes need. It enables you to make informed decisions about fuel choices and the deeper impact upon the body. The book is split into 2 parts, the first part looks at different diets and the practicalities of these for athletes, the accompanying case studies were fascinating. The 2nd part of the book looks at the specific nutritional needs of individuals as well as the needs of the female athlete and older athletes. All in all a very clear and practical guide to the world of nutrition.

I was disappointed in this book. It’s quite short and I found it repetitive. I’m also not sure who it was really intended for.

Throughout the book the writer investigates some different diets and underrepresented groups in the fitness space. With each section she discusses the point, analyses a case study, summarises the point and then repeats it in the lengthy conclusion. So you hear each point around 4 times in total.

The overall message is to eat balanced, eat at optimum times, eat enough and be intuitive.

I’m an amateur fitness enthusiast and I didn’t really learn anything from this, so I’m unsure how real athletes would.

Chapter 1 was really promising and I wish the rest of the book was more like it. I expected recommendations for good things to eat for different types of athletes, but there wasn’t much apart from in chapter 1. I didn’t leave inspired with things to eat.

I guess that’s because, as she says, it’s not a one size fits all approach - but then why take up so many pages with case studies about one person’s experience? The book says every person is different, so how is so much depth from one perspective helpful? It just felt like page filling.

That’s my main issue. The book goes into so much detail about specific fad diets or groups of people, but there’s no real depth about the optimum way to fuel as an endurance athlete or a strength athlete, for example. What a good day of eating should look like.

I was excited to read this because the writer obviously has lots of great knowledge and a really balanced and healthy perspective on nutrition. But unfortunately, the repetitive nature of the book and the strange distribution of detail left me feeling like I’d wasted my money.

Very informative and gave great testimonials with digestible and sensible reminders and tips. Was just hoping for more “actionable” suggestions along the way… but not the fault of the book, as everyBODY is different. Renee McGregor is an expert and I’d definitely recommend.

4.5 ⭐

This was very informative and easy to digest (pun intended 😉). I really liked the narrative that you should stop before you try a new diet or change your way of eating and think about whether it is necessary or will actually serve you. It's an obvious point but hearing it from a qualified nutritionist gives it more weight (or maybe it's just what I needed to hear at the right time).

There were useful recommendations about keeping your carbohydrate availability stocked up before exercise and the benefits of a high protein diet and resistance training. Even information about menopause and hormone replacement therapy which is not relevant to my current life but great to know. It also gave well rounded expert opinions on some popular diet/eating styles like LCHF and intermittent fasting.

Ultimately, I didn't come away from this book with a huge new collection of knowledge about nutrition but the main points were very well explained and I feel more comfortable with my nutritional approach having read it.

This book is characteristic of the authors accessible advice on sports nutrition and clearly explains the rationale and science of nutrition in axway you can easily implent day to day.
The book also has a wide range of information on different approaches, including specific diets. It does a really good job of providing a balanced view of them all too. This is especially important given one of the key planks of the nutritional advice is to make choices to for your sport, context and approach. The range of information in the book allows you to do exactly that.
An excellent resource I can see myself coming back to time and time again.

Unfortunately this book is not as good as I thought it would be. The author didn’t do her research and suggests things that are outdated. The worse is she recommends foods like (meat, eggs and dairy) that has been proved by scientist that are unhealthy.
She follows her own beliefs without a proven scientific data that is not biased and not sponsored by some companies that have financial interests.

An excellent toolbox

This book doesn't give you a clear nutrition plan, but rather gives you the tools to work out way is right for you. Backed by science, not the latest fad.

It is honest and we'll written. But impotent to note that this is aimed at training athletes (including amateurs) rather than sedate people who want to lose weight. If you do some regular training or is an invaluable resource to ensure you are fuelling your body correctly.

I have been grateful for Renee’s nuanced writing in blogs, articles etc in the health/nutrition world over the years and so had very high hopes for this book. It read like a very basic textbook, so nuanced at times that it lacked a meaningful point. I was, however, interested to (briefly) learn how the gut microbiome is strongly related to early childhood but the rest felt repetitive and simplistic. I will keep reading Renee’s other content but perhaps not in book form in future.

Literally my university study to date in a book.

Renee is amazing, really clearly outlines the fundamentals of nutrition and the pros and cons of popularised eating patterns under the lens of athletes.

She's faithful to the science, yet maintains a compassionate perspective on people with varying cultural and ethical beliefs.

A good, brief overview of nutrition for athletes. There are a few specifics but mainly Renee’s view is that everyone is different. She advises on what to aim for generally and picks apart a few specific types of athlete and diet. Definitely one you can come back to again and again.

There's so much conflicting advice out there now in terms of what you should eat and how you should eat. It's really confusing and can be anxiety-inducing. I found this book helpful in settling a few things in my mind, including whether its helpful or not for women to use intermittent fasting, or low carbohydrate approaches (especially if you are active or looking for performance results). I've been trying to lose some body fat, and I think this book has given me a healthier way of trying to go about it, a healthier mindset, and an understanding of how the body may respond to different approaches. Renee seems to carefully consider scientific research and think about whats relevant to different groups of people, including women. I sometimes think other books might give general advice, based on research or work with just men. Based on this book and following Renee on Instagram, watching videos of Renee chatting things through, I feel I can trust her advice. The book sections are clear, so its easy to dip into a topic or group you are interested in, and each section has a 'professional opinion' and 'summary' at the end.
