Emma Baxter writes of the influential designer, Coco Chanel, in her book "The Little Book of Chanel." From the early years of Coco as a teenager to the establishment of the house of Chanel and its accomplishments, the book covers the whole life of Chanel. Beginning with the works of jersey and the designing of hats, Chanel continued down the path of designing until producing some of the most well-known pieces to this day such as the classic Chanel bag, tweed suits and the little black dress. Having a deep interest in fashion and Chanel standing as one of my idols, this book was my cup of tea. Written with such detail and information allowed me to find out a lot about Chanel and the making of her brand that I was unaware of before. Baxter included several pictures and captions for each one to provide further information on the pieces that were created in earlier times as well. For anyone interested in fashion or Chanel specifically, this book is definitely a strong recommendation, giving insight on the efforts needed to establish a fashion label and the struggles to make a name for yourself. Baxter did an excellent job in incorporating the journey of Chanel, her works and the efforts needed to achieve them, as well as her personal life. A great read!

Mit „Little Book of Chanel“ startet der Eden-Verlag in seine neue Fashion House-Reihe. In Einzelbänden werden die bekannten Modemarken und ihre Geschichten vorgestellt. Chanel mit der ikonischen Coco Chanel macht den Anfang. Mit einer glamourösen Mischung aus vielseitigen Fotografien, Rückblicken auf Kampagnen und Kollektionen, einigen Skizzen der berühmten Mademoiselle Coco und jeder Menge Insights gewährt das Buch Einblicke in die beeindruckende Welt der sagenumwobenen Modemarke.
Wie sieht es aus?
Bei dem Buch handelt es sich um eine Hardcover-Ausgabe, die etwas größer als A6, aber kleiner als A5 ist. Das Buch punktet mit einem schlichten Außendesign in den ikonischen Farben schwarz und weiß, mit denen man Chanel verbindet. Die sehr minimalistische Gestaltung weckt hierbei Interesse und unterstreicht zugleich die schlichte Eleganz der Marke. Auch der Buchrücken ist mit dem Schriftzug „Little book of Chanel“ und dem Namen der Herausgeberin sehr dezent. Das Innere wird durch eine vielseitige Mischung aus Fotografien, Zeichnungen und Textelementen übersichtlich und abwechslungsreich gestaltet. Ganzseitige Bildelemente in Farbe und schwarz-weiß entführen den Leser durch die Welt der Entstehung und Entwicklung der Marke. Die Seiten sind aus dickem, beschichteten Papier und machen einen sehr hochwertigen Eindruck.
Was erwartet einen?
Bei diesem Buch handelt es sich nicht um ein klassisches Sachbuch oder gar eine Biografie. Es ist viel eher eine Sammlung, welche umfassende Einblick in die Marke und den Mythos Chanel geben soll, ohne dabei zu überladen oder zu überfordern. Ganz klar im Fokus steht die bildliche Ausgestaltung der Chanel-Reise. Es ist eine Art kleiner Bildband mit textlichen Elementen und Anmerkungen zu den jeweiligen Bildern. Hierbei wird vieles angesprochen, aber es bleibt bei Einblicken – eben das kleine Buch von Chanel, im Überblick. Es wird ein wenig Bezug auf Coco, ihre Beweggründe und ihre Entwicklung genommen, einiges hierbei auch durchaus kritisch erwähnt. Der große Fokus liegt aber eindeutig auf der Produktwelt und der Entstehung der berühmten Produkte, die alle Welt mit Chanel verbindet. Es werden Skizzen eingeführt, Ausschnitte aus Kollektionen gezeigt, verschiedene Kampagnen eingebaut und alles mit Fotos aus der Öffentlichkeit abgerundet. Man erfährt hier so einiges über die Vorgehensweise und die Visionen von Coco Chanel, aber es wird auch die Weiterentwicklung der Marke (etwa unter Karl Lagerfeld) erwähnt. Die umfangreichen Fotos laden sehr zum Träumen und Schwärmen ein.
Mein Fazit
„The little book of Chanel“ ist ein wunderschöner Auftakt für eine vielversprechende Reihe. Das Buch bietet Einblicke hinter die Kulissen einer weltbekannten Marke, um die sich viele Legenden ranken. Es gibt immer wieder etwas zu entdecken, denn die prächtigen Fotos – zum Teil älterer Natur – laden absolut zum Entdecken ein. Durch das hochwertige Papier und den eleganten schlichten Einband wirkt das Buch sehr edel, was auch die gradlinige Gestaltung unterstreicht. Man merkt, dass sich die Autorin bei der Ausgestaltung viel gedacht hat. Mit gestalterischen Elementen, kleineren Anekdoten und jeder Menge komprimierter Informationen hat man hier ein überraschend umfassendes Werk. Das Buch ist für alle zu empfehlen, die Interesse an Fashion und einen Blick hinter die Kulissen haben, für Fans von Chanel und der legendären Coco, aber auch für Leute, die gerne schöne Bilder entdecken möchten. Das Buch kann auch als kleines Coffee Table Book durchaus überzeugen und dürfte in meinen Augen auch ein wunderbares Geschenk für Fashionbegeisterte sein. Mich hat der erste Teil der Reihe auf jeden Fall schon sehr begeistert und ich bin gespannt, wohin der Verlag den Leser noch entführen wird.

Okay, Mademoiselle Coco had LIVED. Bought this more for the aesthetics, but reading about Chanel's life turned out to be very interesting. She was an incredibly intelligent, cunning, and intricate woman. Her impact was powerful, her strategies immaculate, and her choice of men intriguing. Not to mention the whole WWII controversy.
While I appreciate her designs, I sometimes find them too subdued and plain to elicit a "wow" from me. I value elegance and simplicity for everyday looks (or as base), but when it comes to couture, I believe it should exude extravagance and theatrical flair. Personally leaning towards Dior's dreamy glamour over Chanel's minimalism and practicality ngl.
Though her avoidance of color doesn't match my preferences, understanding her childhood, her dark uniform at the orphanage, brings psychological depth to this choice. Her inclination to critique fellow designers adds a bitter undertone to her story. So, the sharp aspects of Coco's personality and viewpoints don't quite resonate with me, yet I can't help but admire her formidable influence and captivating, enigmatic character. Fascinating for sure.

Δεν ξέρω για εσάς,αλλά για εμένα η μόδα θεωρείται ως μία εκ των τεχνών καί μορφών έκφρασης των διάφορων δημιουργών που ασκεί εντονότερη,ή,πιο ήπια επιρροή στην καθημερινή μας ζωή,όχι μόνο με τις όποιες προτάσεις επιτάσσει στο ντύσιμό μας,αλλά καί σε άλλους τομείς. Άν γυρίσουμε αρκετά πίσω στον χρόνο,θα παρατηρήσουμε πως από την αρχαιότητα μέχρι καί σήμερα,υπήρχαν διάφορες τάσεις της μόδας που ακολουθούσαν τόσο οι απλοί πολίτες έως καί οι βασιλείς καί οι λοιποί άρχοντες. Σαν να ήταν το μέσο που καθόριζε εποχές,κοινωνική θέση,καταγωγή,επάγγελμα μέχρι καί τις υπάρχουσες κοινωνικές πεποιθήσεις καί κανόνες. Ακόμα κι αν κάποιος/α ισχυριστεί πως δεν ακολουθεί πιστά την μόδα,χαράσσοντας τον δικό του/της δρόμο,πάλι καταλήγει στο ίδιο πράγμα.
Αντικειμενικά ο 20ος αιώνας φαίνεται ως μία από τις πιο παραγωγικές,όσον αφορά την μόδα,εποχές,αφού εκείνα τα χρόνια έγιναν η αφετηρία της εμφάνισης καί καθιέρωσης σπουδαίων σχεδιαστών/στριων,που εκτός από πρωτοπόροι/ες στο είδος τους,κατάφεραν να περάσουν στην ιστορία καί να αποκτήσουν παγκόσμια φήμη καί η συνέχεια των οίκων μόδας τους να κρατούν τα ηνία της πρωτιάς καί όλοι/ες να επιθυμούν να αποκτήσουν ένα αντικείμενο της ανάλογης φίρμας. Πόσα,όμως,γνωρίζουμε για την ζωή καί την πορεία αυτών των ανθρώπων που τόσο θαυμάζουμε; Από τις εκδόσεις Ψυχογιός κυκλοφορούν καί στην χώρα μας τα δύο πρώτα βιβλία της σειράς ''Τα μικρά βιβλία της μόδας'' που αφορούν τον σχεδιαστή Κριστιάν Ντιόρ καί την αγαπημένη μου σχεδιάστρια Κοκό Σανέλ. Aesthetically pleasing book which took me only 1.5 h to read! Helps me to get back on track with my reading goal of 50 books this year. The book follows the great designer's evolution and innovation, from her impoverished childhood to her present-day legacy. Detailed photographs of Chanel's designs, fashion photography, and catwalk shots definitely added a lot to this book.

Interesting life - had me digging a little deeper into the whole Nazi liaison subject:
Serre, forty-eight years old and with more than twenty years of experience as a magistrate, grilled Vaufreland for months. Serre also learned from French intelligence officers how Vaufreland and Chanel had collaborated with the German military. Slowly, Serre, a painstaking investigator, turned up details of Chanel’s Abwehr recruitment, her collaboration with Vaufreland, and how she and the German spy had embarked on an Abwehr mission to Madrid in 1941.
During her interrogation and testimony, Chanel would claim Vaufreland’s stories were “fantasies.” But French police and court documents tell another story: while French Resistance fighters were shooting Germans in the summer of 1941, Chanel was recruited as an agent by the Abwehr. Fifty pages of minute detail describe how Chanel and the trusted Abwehr agent F-7117 — Baron Louis de Vaufreland Piscatory — were recruited and linked together by German agent Lieutenant Hermann Niebuhr, alias Dr. Henri Neubauer, to travel together in the summer of 1941 on an espionage mission for German military intelligence. Vaufreland’s job was to identify men and women who could be recruited, or coerced, into spying for Nazi Germany. Chanel, who knew Sir Samuel Hoare, the British ambassador to Spain, via her relations with the Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor, was there to provide cover for Vaufreland’s work.
It is doubtful that Judge Serre ever learned the extent and depth of Chanel’s collaboration with Nazi officials. It is unlikely he saw the British secret intelligence report documenting what Count Joseph von Ledebur-Wicheln, an Abwehr agent and defector, told MI6 agents in 1944. In the file, Ledebur discussed how Chanel and Baron von Dincklage traveled to bombed-out Berlin in 1943 to offer Chanel’s services as an agent to SS Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler. Ledebur also revealed that Chanel, after visiting Berlin, undertook a second mission to Madrid for SS general Walter Schellenberg, Himmler’s chief of SS intelligence. Serre would never learn that Dincklage had been a German military intelligence officer since after WWI: Abwehr agent F-8680.
It is also unlikely that Judge Serre ever discovered the depth of Chanel’s collaboration with the Nazis in occupied Paris or that she was a paid agent of Walter Schellenberg. Nor did he know that Dincklage worked for the Abwehr and the Gestapo in France and for the Abwehr in Switzerland and, later, during the occupation of Paris.

Chanel didn’t have success with her clothing in Hollywood so she only costume designed 3 films in the 1930s before moving back to Paris.
In the late 30s she got arrested for planning with the enemy - Britain as wel as dating a German but she was released within a few hours but shut down the house of chanel for 14 years and was living in Switzerland.
She became very jealous and hateful towards Dior because she was “infuriated to see Dior being worshipped for his restrictive silhouette that once again subordinated womens bodies to a male view of femininity.” She wanted to reinstate her original ethos “to provide clothes that simplified choice, offered women comfort and understand elegance and which liberated the female body.”
She was over 70 when she wanted to bring back the house of chanel in 1953, but Europe didn’t like her new era and saw her clothing as “a melancholy retrospective” and “a flop” but luckily America loved her new designs and fashion statements that they adapted her clothes and the purchases came flooding in! She remained faithful to her neutral colour palette she loved.
Her “chanel look” was blossoming in America in the mid 1950s.

Absolutely love this book. I never knew Chanel's history nor did I know her origin story, but I knew a Chanel jacket and matching sweater set when I saw it. It was transformative reading this book and learning how groundbreaking she was and how she taught herself how to sew to make her initial designs and how focused she was on quality and elevating the feminine form with clothing that was elegant and practical! I love the designs more now and appreciate the history so much more. It was enlightening reading about her fashion evolution, it really embodies the journey of a modern woman and entrepreneur.

Definitely my favorite fashion book of all time. It perfectly described the journey and original of the iconic designer brand, Chanel. The images contained in the book went along with the timeline of events perfectly. I learned so much about the brand as a whole, and it was fascinating to see the roots of such a large fashion empire company. The takeover of Karl Lagerfeld was one of the parts of the book that really stood out to me. I found it really interesting to be able to see the evolution of the brand and how it shifted after he took over, while still keeping the iconic feel to the high-end brand.

It absolutely blows my mind what an impact Chanel had on 20th century fashion. She helped invent the flapper. She created the little black dress. Jackie Kennedy wore one of her suits to JFK's assassination. You could go down the street in some of Chanel's outfits from ninety years ago and still look smart.
The most incredible thing about her life, though, has got to be the fact that she managed to become a world famous couturier during World War 1 in France.
Well, possibly that says more about the French than it does about Chanel...
