Special Agent Ricki James’ every move is being watched by an unknown figure who keeps to the shadows, following her team as they chase a killer through the rugged backcountry of a national park.
The report for her last case is barely finished when Special Agent Ricki James is called on to help a fellow agent track down illegal hunters operating in North Cascades National Park. But the hunters aren’t the only thing they find. Deep in the forest, and way off the trail, there’s a body, with a bullet in his back and another in his head-- grisly proof that hunting deer isn’t the only illegal activity going on in the wild, untamed park.
When more bodies are uncovered, and their prime suspect is murdered, the stakes climb to new heights as innocent park visitors are in danger of becoming collateral damage. With the investigative unit stretched thin, Ricki is forced to accept help from Dr. Jonathan Blake. She’s had run-ins with the famous FBI profiler before and does not want to owe him any favors. But with few clues and even fewer resources, there isn’t much choice.
As the investigation heats up, Ricki receives threats pointing directly at her from someone who is also searching for the killer. Someone who is careful to keep to the shadows of the forest, and no one has seen in decades. In the small town just outside the park, he’s talked about in whispers as “the Hermit”.
It’s unnerving to be shadowed by someone who know the park better than she does, and who’s blatantly told Ricki that if she doesn’t catch the killer soon, then he will. And he’ll dispose of anyone who gets in his way. Now catching a killer isn’t Ricki’s only problem. She must fight to keep the team from being cornered in the backcountry because that’s where the Hermit operates best. If he traps them there, no one will walk out of the forest alive.
If you like Robert Dugoni, Melinda Leigh, Mike Omer, and Elle Gray, then it’s time you met Special Agent Ricki James.
I had part of the "puzzle" figured but only a "fuzzy sketch" of the 'rest of the story' as Paul Harvey would say !! Ricki kept saying she thought there might be two shooters, but I was convinced that was a "false clue" !! I kept thinking "why would the Banker hang out in a 'low rent' bar" if he wasn't involved in someway? There were a great deal of other 'clues' that had to be 'sorted through' and I don't want to discourage others from reading this book!! Thanks Again, C.R., for a very enjoyable and entertaining read!! I am looking forward to the next one !!!
What a great imagination. This book, along with the previous ones in this series, are top-notch. Total twists and turns and complete surprises. I am afraid to say too much for fear of letting spoilers slip.
Just begin reading this series, in order and enjoy the ride.
This book is a great thriller that keeps you in suspense until the very end. The intrigue is great. I could not figure out who done it. I highly recommend this book and series
Just didn't do it for me. Repetitive dialog and boring . So disappointed. Liked her other stories in the series. Bummer but I'll mostlikely read her next one and hope it's better.
This was a quick and interesting read. However, I wish the author or her editor would be more vigilant about accuracy. A simple Google search would show that Big Bend area is in the southwest part of Texas. Otherwise, I have enjoyed the series.
This story moved along at pretty fast pace. I like the way the author is building relationships between all the characters, which will hopefully continue through future books.
Ricki and her crew which included Gin Reilly of the FBI, worked the northern Cascade national park with a total of 7 murders. Love these books. Fast paced and great characters! Love the new character, Gin too.
This book sure had a lot of suspects. Never would have thought that the ones that were the killers .......well I would have never guessed. Looking forward to book 7.
This was a really good mystery with ties to both the past and current events. I really like the mix this author has between information about the parks and our current drug smuggling crisis and gang activity. Definitely worth a read.
I have a hard time putting these books down. I hope Mr. Chandler keeps this series going. I have enjoyed reading the first 6 books & can’t wait to read more.
Sometimes it takes a few books for an author to smooth the profiles and gain his/her rhythm. This is the book that does that for the series. A recommended read!
