Representation Matters is the essential book for teachers looking to promote diversity and inclusion in their school and create positive, lasting change for staff and pupils.
In this crucial book, assistant principal, campaigner and TEDxBristol speaker Aisha Thomas demonstrates how race shapes the experiences of Black, Asian and minority ethnic teachers and pupils in the UK education system, and why representation is fundamental in every school. Using real-life stories from teachers and pupils, this book offers practical, concrete strategies and resources to drive change and promote an anti-racist approach to education.
Covering a range of important topics, including intersectionality, decolonising the curriculum, unconscious bias and microaggressions, Representation Matters equips all teachers and school leaders with everything they need to understand the impact of race in education.
I completely agree with @barbara band the one other reviewer of this book. This book should be read by all Teachers.
I am not a Teacher, I believe representation does matter and this book breaks down all the definitions related to race, ethnicity, diversity, equality, equity, inclusion. It is a book that not only Teachers and schools in Britain should be using, but any institution could use, the exercises within the chapters can be applied in any scenario really.
The lived experiences although sad and triggering, highlight very important systemic issues, which teachers and the education system can help to alleviate at a young age, but parents and adults, in general, should know about and be actively participating in anti-racist activities. (examples of which are given in the book).
Loved the addition of the recommended list of books, podcasts and movies.
List of recommended podcasts for me to check out We Need to talk about Whiteness About race with Renni Eddo-Lodge No country for young women Sadia Azmat and Monty Onanuga The echo chamber Pod Slay in your lane, Yomi Adegoke and Elizabeth Uviebinene The good ancestor Pod Save the people DeRay Mckesson.
I have just spent my weekend reading this insightful and thought provoking book. There is so much packed into it including why representation matters, auditing practices and analysing data in your school, talking to students about racism, the legal framework and inclusive practice, and more! Each chapter has a summary with key learning points, questions to consider to prompt self-reflection and discussion points for staff meetings. The author, Aisha Thomas, brings both her lived and academic experiences to the book, and it contains numerous case studies to demonstrate specific points.
This book should be required reading for all school staff and should feature on every staff library CPD bookshelf.
I mean look this isn’t aimed at me, it’s very racism 101 and I’m sure many white teachers would find it useful. I was gonna give 3 stars rounded up from 2.5, but on the last page it genuinely says “slavery was abolished 400 years ago” like… This is straight up wrong.
