Gary Scheiner does an excellent job communicating the ins and outs of diabetes. He covers the basics and the details of diabetes management in an easy-to-understand way. Not to mention he sprinkles in humor throughout while acknowledging the seriousness of taking care of your health.
My boyfriend stumbled upon this book while researching my new condition while I was still recovering in the hospital from diabetic ketoacidosis, due to undiagnosed type 1 diabetes. He recommended me this book, so I would understand more about type 1 diabetes and so I could accept that this will be a part of me for the rest of my life. This book has brought me so much clarity and information, in some ways even more than the hospital was able to give me. Mr. Scheiner writes clearly and explains everything thoroughly, while alternating between a serious writing style and a joke here and there. Everything mr. Scheiner has written I will take with me while I continue my journey of accepting and living with type 1 diabetes. I am truly grateful!
My husband was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last month and this book has been an amazing resource. A small warning that the beginning talks about all the possible complications of diabetes and it’s a bit scary. My husband had to put it down and pick it up a week or two later because it made him even more depressed about his diagnosis. If you can get past that, there’s a lot of good advice and resources.
For anyone taking insulin, this is a good read. It's all from the American viewpoint. You take from it what you personally need, and it helps underpin everything the health care team explains in the UK.
