Delvers LLC #5

Hostile Takeover

Rate this book
The Delvers LLC group is moving into the unknown. Tasked with a dangerous quest by Dolos, the god of Ludus, they have had to leave one of their members behind. Their journey will be full of shocking revelations as they learn more of Earth’s ancient history.

Forces of evil that have been gathering on Ludus have begun to act. Henry and Jason are rapidly being caught in the middle of a world war. The stakes have never been higher.

Although great, the power they have acquired thus far might not be enough to survive. Will Delvers LLC be able to complete their next mission? More importantly, even if they do, is the fight for the planet one they can even win?

About the series: Join Henry and Jason as they explore Ludus, struggling to survive on an alien planet full of magic and monster. The two men from Earth will be forced to navigate new cultures and learn mysterious powers they continue to master.

The two friends will make more allies along the way, even some they consider family. But in order to return home, they must finish the insane quest that Dolos, the god of Ludus, gave them. They will need an edge. Maybe modern know-how from Earth will be enough.

Introduction

Alright, pups and fluffbutts, it's time to dive headfirst into the icy waters of Blaise Corvin's Delvers LLC: Hostile Takeover, the fifth book in the series. Published in May 2022, this GameLit/LitRPG fantasy is meant to continue our wild ride on the magic-and-monster-filled Ludus. Stakes are higher, world war is knocking on the door, and Henry and Jason are trying to keep their tails out of the fire. You ready for an adventure that’s a mix of kung-fu training montages, psycho demon lovers, and ancient Earth history shenanigans? Let’s see if it actually lives up to the hype or leaves us howling for a rewrite.

Plot Summary

The Delvers LLC crew has been thrown into a quest given by Dolos, that peacock of a god who just loves messing with people. Our good boys Henry and Jason are tasked with something that could change the world, but as always, it’s a grind through madness, unexpected invasions, and weird revelations. This one’s got big monsters, lots of "limit breaks," and the kinda jaw-dropping WTF moments that should keep you on your paws—but does it?

Bezzi-ibbi, the Mo'hali hero trainee, gets his time to shine—and a psycho lover too (classic). The gang’s separated, with Jason and Henry on their own missions. There’s a lot of setup for the big bad finale coming in book six, and all I can say is: these fluffers better be ready, 'cause they’re in for a helluva ride.

The Author

Blaise Corvin’s been doing his thing, bringing us GameLit/LitRPG content that’s all about leveling up, gaining power, and making Earth-born dudes into interplanetary badasses. He’s got military experience, and you can feel it in his tactical approach to world-building. He writes with a style that’s direct, a bit gritty, but not without humor—and a healthy amount of swearing. It’s what keeps me coming back, even if some of his books get a little lost. Hostile Takeover tries to mix his narrative flair with the depth we saw in his Secret of the Old Ones series, but does it manage it as well? Let’s find out.

Characters

Okay, lemme just say it—Henry is still my guy. He’s rude, he’s blunt, and he’s got the tech-magic fusion going on, which makes for some of the best scenes in the book. But Jason’s also getting a bit more spotlight, and that’s both a blessing and a curse. My dude’s still got that "I’m just a nerd from Earth" thing going, but now he’s tangled in some "High Priestess wife" stuff, and lemme tell you, it’s a lot. And Bezzi-ibbi? That cat’s had his own anime filler arc—11 years in a training montage and a psycho girlfriend who’s torturing demons. It’s bonkers, and not always in a good way.

The supporting cast, though, they’re getting spread thin. Mareen’s been reduced to a background character, Nora’s kinda just there, and the whole juggling act leaves me wishing we’d focus a bit more on our original boys instead of bouncing between every character under the sun.

Structure

Alright, here’s where things get a bit rough. This book jumps around a lot. We’re swapping POVs like we’re playing musical chairs, and it doesn’t always work. I get it—we’re setting up for something big, building the stakes—but it leaves the narrative feeling scattered. Bezzi-ibbi’s story alone could’ve been a whole side book, and maybe it should’ve been. The pacing’s up and down, like a rollercoaster with broken brakes. One minute we’re in a giant battle, the next we’re dealing with marriage politics. It’s like someone threw three different types of kibble in my bowl and told me it’s gourmet—I’m not buying it.

Themes & Analysis

We’re still playing with that classic theme of "power and responsibility." Jason and Henry keep growing stronger, but the stakes keep getting higher. There’s also this underlying sense of alienation—being from Earth on an alien planet, trying to make sense of new powers, and dealing with gods who’re basically just jerks with too much power. There’s something almost Lovecraftian about it, and I dig that. But a lot of the deeper emotional arcs felt unfinished. The character growth felt more like power-ups than true progression.

Scenes (Romance & Drama)

So we’ve got harem vibes creeping in, and I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it. Jason’s whole "High Priestess wife" arc is awkward as heck. It’s like watching a wolf try to wear a tux—dude’s just not comfortable in it. Then there’s Bezzi-ibbi and his psycho girlfriend arc—which, okay, had some intense moments, but it just added to the chaos rather than providing depth. The romance in this book isn’t gonna win any awards. It’s there, it’s awkward, and it’s not as engaging as the action.

World-Building

Ah, Ludus. We’re back in the land of magic, monsters, and absurdly complicated politics. The world-building’s solid, as always—Corvin’s got a knack for that—but it’s starting to feel like we’re retreading the same ground. New continents, more powerful monsters, demon invasions—it’s all cool, but it’s losing that fresh, exciting edge we had in earlier books. What I did love, though, was the ancient Earth history stuff. It’s a neat twist, and I’m all about connecting dots between worlds.

Praise & Critique

Here’s the deal: Hostile Takeover has its moments. When Corvin leans into the action, the tech-magic hybrid stuff, and the chaos of world war, it’s a blast. The stakes are high, the battles are epic, and there’s enough tension to keep you on your paws. But—and it’s a big but—the scattered narrative, the too-many POVs, and the awkward romance bring it down. It feels like it’s trying to do too much, and in the process, it loses some of the tight, focused storytelling that made the first books great.

Comparison to Other Works

Compared to Golden Handcuffs, this one’s a step up—but not by much. It’s still got that scattered, bridge-book feeling, like we’re just getting all the pieces in place for book six. Compared to Secret of the Old Ones, though? Nah, this one doesn’t hold a candle. Secret had focus, tension, and depth. Hostile Takeover is fun, sure, but it’s more popcorn than steak.

Personal Evaluation

As a reader who’s been along for the ride since book one, I’ve got mixed feelings. I wanted to love this one, I really did. And parts of it? I did love. The action scenes, the big reveals, the insane power-ups—that’s the stuff I’m here for. But the scattered pacing, the awkward relationships, and the feeling that this is just a "prep book" for something better left me frustrated. It’s like being served a half-cooked meal—you can see the potential, but it’s not quite there yet.

Conclusion

Delvers LLC: Hostile Takeover is a rollercoaster of magic, action, and scattered storylines. It’s got epic moments, some solid world-building, and enough chaos to keep fans interested. But it’s also got flaws—scattered pacing, too many perspectives, and awkward romance that drags it down. If you’re already invested in the series, it’s worth the read, if only to keep up with the story. But if you’re new? Start from book one, 'cause this one’s not the place to jump in.

Rating: 3 outta 5 howls. Fun, but not quite fierce enough to leave a mark.

Pretty interesting

Still enjoying the story as they can start to run out of steam after awhile. The MC's as well as the suporting characters are interesting and its always fun when unexpected excitement such as multiple invasions occur. Quite a few pages were devoted to analyzing different characters' motivations which was interesting to me, but there were also a few pages of psyco babble, ramblings on about culture vs biology and dissection of the structure magic. I really enjoyed the jaguar-kin story arc, where he even got himself a girlfriend (although she turned out to be a psycho slasher.... that was unexpected). Then he returned to the main story arc seriously OP. It reminds me of kung-fu movies where the hero has to get trained before taking on their nemesis. All said, l look forward to the next installment, although l have to read the Nora Hazzard series first.

World Tour doesn't quite work out...

Another great entry in the Delvers LLC universe. The story starts just before the end of the previous book, providing some universe building from Dolos and his... peer group. We also get mentions of several characters from the anthology.

The story deals with the further misadventures of Delvers LLC in preparation for what seems like a potentially apocalyptic finale (or almost finale) in book 6, Gray Knight, but not to worry, there will be more after that book, so says the Foreword.

SPOILERS BELOW
********************************

Last book, Bezzi-ibbi went through a gate of the ancestors and disappeared. Time flows differently there and our first check-in with him is 2 years after he entered. In total he spends at least 11 years in there (only a few days passes on Ludus) and completes his training (the first Mo'hali hero to ever do so). During said training, he meets other Mo'hali hero trainees, including Cadon-ret and more importantly, Farheem-ja, a fox race Mo'hali that he falls in love with. Things take a turn when Cadon-ret and his posse catch up with them and knock out Bezzi-ibbi. When he comes to, Farheem-ja has killed them all, but Cadon-ret whom she is still torturing. She had Bezzi-ibbi flick her in the head and exclaims that she is defeated, which gives him all the Hero Points she has accumulated. She reminds him of their promise to find each other afterwards.
Gavreel of the Host descends and takes her away after that.
He comes back and immediately runs to the queen and asks permission to destroy the invading true demons. She hesitantly gives it and he does so (off screen), then appears in Jallen in front of Gamin-ara the head of the Sky Ruler Clan. He is there to fulfill a promise to Rark-han to help make Jallen Great Again.

Nora, Henry, and Jason are flying around in the Raising Hull. They visit an Admin City right before everything goes horribly awry.
Henry and Maureen meet some Orks that are part of his "faithful". Then true demons attack, along with one of Nora's old enemies, Sesasi.
Things don't look good for the team, but Jason makes a bold move and challenges one of the enemy High Priestesses to a duel.
Using his limitbreak technique, he wins, though loses a hand/part of an arm.
He then is in a coma for a few days while everyone gets to the monster continent and wakes up just before the end of the book.
He explains he knows everything that happened, thanks to his orb controller, congratulates Henry on dating Philana and says a rank up is imminent.
Then they summon Dolos, have a quick chat and Jason's wife is presumably promoted to High Priestess.
Dolos makes a grand announcement to the people of the world, rescinding the bounties (he hadn't been paying) and warning of great change. Then cat people show up and surprise everyone.
Presumably a sign that Jason will be taking a 2nd wife soon as he has been talking about cat people forever.

First couple books were amazing.

Book 4 wasn't as good as the previous books.

Book 5 is a true disappointment.

Who the fuck is Nora Hazard? Comes out of nowhere and wastes screen time for the rest of the cast. Genuinely could not give a fuck less about her.

I was excited for our little catboy king to get married to the other girl, because she was kinda cool, and not annoying. Then suddenly this character is constantly taking center stage and screaming her last name like some cringe catchphrase.

The story got way less coherent, and the characters that are actually enjoyable to follow have way less screen time.

I did not enjoy the whole "Henry's wife is a bloodmage demon thing now" - she was already kinda boring and annoying before, but now she's got a more central role ... as an even more annoying character. If you thought the book 4 arc of "boohoo I lost my baby now I'm going to turn to the darkside and make a deal with an eldritch godthing" was shit, just wait til you get to book 5 for "boohoo my actions had consequences and now I'm hideous and also depressed fulltime".

Things in the series that were good:

- Evolving and escalating magic powers and unique abilities and unique applications of those abilities
- Henry and Jason being themselves and going on adventures and doing shit
- Magical technology being invested and tested out and stuff

Things that basically ruined the series by book 5:

- Nora
- Mareen
- A constantly expanding cast of characters and themes and concepts that detract and take away time and space from all the stuff that you came to love over the first 3 books

very disappointed in this book.

First of all let me get the pros out-of-the-way, The story is still well done and well written. I love the characters. All the characters are great especially the wives of the two main characters except for the fact that Henry is so crass this must be some American bias from the author. Because most Americans are not that blunt or not that rude. If I didn’t know any better I think the author was a Britt. Now for the cons, The author said this would be the longest book of the series, it wasn’t. The author also said that there would be more action in this book than others, not so much. The story did not get advanced that much, in fact The story branched away from the two main characters quite a bit. Like I said The story does cause you to want more but the RPG progression is a bit slow. I will read the next book if I can remember what happens in this one.

Return to Ludus

The fifth installment of the Delvers has arrived. With bigger stakes, bigger dreams, and bigger monsters for the fan favorites to face. The world is getting darker as Dolos' enemies close in and not one of those this peacock wannabe god has tapped for service will get out unscathed.

This book is not for those new to the series, but rather a love letter to returning fans. And if you havent read the rest of the series yet then get out there and start page turning, or listen to Jeff Hayes fantastic audio performance. You wont want to miss this.

Hostile indeed

LitRPG parallel universe magic harem
Many changes happen in this series entry and many of the players are separated in space. If you've been reading along, major events happen. I keep waiting, though, for life mages that can restore amputations, and I would have thought Orb-bonded healing would include that. Maybe with restrictions eased, it will manifest. Seems like something gamer nerds like Jason and Henry would look into.

Hope the next book comes out soon. Recommended.

Enjoyable

The entire Delvers llc. series is enjoyable as a more refreshing take on a gamelit leveling scenario that unlike many other novels has yet to become stale. Many books in that genre have the characters gain power rapidly or start out so overpowered that their challenges aren't really something that is difficult for the characters to beat but in the Delvers LLC books there are always things more powerful than the characters that they know they can't defeat but still have to carry out their acts of defiance.

ok

I gave it five stars because I love the world of Ludus and the action. But this book was really about Bezzi-ibbi in my opinion lol. Don’t get me wrong he’s a great character, just not my favorite. This book felt like a place holder and left me feeling unsatisfied and wanting for more. Henry’s my favorite character and I’m not liking the vibe of Jason being stronger than him.

While the story is getting spread a little thin over so many important characters, I'm still enjoying it. However, I worry that it is devolving into Chinese cultivation novel territory by including mysterious limit-break powers... they don't seem earned. I want to see more clever uses and combinations of powers. Not once here did Henry make a technological breakthrough or penetrate a mystery.

So, I'm still having fun but worry about the direction the series is taking.

Surprises all around

This part 5 of an ongoing series if you don't read the other books in the series first none of this one will make sense so part 5 kicks off with a bang and then spoilers surprises happen causing the gang to have to split up as the various factions including angels get ready for a war there's action adventure comedy and holy shit moments 5 out of 5 Highly recommend

Half a book or Anthology?

I'm not sure the through line is good for this book. There is so much going on in different places. Old story threads are being tied up, some are dropping. The training could have been a whole book. There is good character development but I feel like there is half a book missing. What's there is good, don't get me wrong but feel like the first half of a series finally.

I fear my interest in this series is dwindling. Not really because of anything wrong with the writing, but the time between books means I tend to forget the characters and story arc and have to re-learn it every time and the story arc just isn't clear and engaging enough to support that.

On top of that they've run into the dbz issue of power scaling really early with characters fighting godly level creatures. Corvin really needs to focus the plot and get it moving.

Fantastic as always

Blouse I enjoy your novels. They have wonderful storylines and vibrant characters. That being said, did something happen to your editor? Numerous misspellings, wrong sentence structure or just wrong words. Please, this is not a negative review, as I anxiously await your next novel, but an observation.

Great!

Another great addition to the series. If you enjoyed previous books in the series I can highly recommend this installment. I can't tell you much more without giving lots away, other than that there are several great fight scenes, and that our hero's continue to grow in power but not without consequences. Looking forward to the next one . Two thumbs up!

It has been so long since the last Delvers it took a few pages to jog the memories. Then each chapter the POV changed which normally annoys me BUT...was very important to the plot and character development. Then, I was totally immersed in the world and O saw the dreaded words "to be continued" nearly cried!

They're Baaack!!!

It was great to see the Delvers crew back in action again!

This book has plenty of action and continues to set the stage for even bigger things.

One thing I have to specifically highlight is the character interaction and conversations. I don't know how Blaise managed it but he created some of the best conversations I have read in years. Truly impressive!

Another excellent Delvers novel!

As usual, Delvers LLC follows the adventures of a pair of men from earth (The "nerd" and the "closet nerd" veteran) and the companions they've gathered along the way, while exploring an interesting magic/advancement system, and a different set of cultural norms and the difficulties of integrating.

Simply a perfect 10/10

I started this series a while ago and I’ve not stoped since. Actually have read all four (before this one) and then Listened to them on audible. It’s just great. Nothing really else to say, it’s fun, action packed, daring, sad, and every other adjective. I legit am going to be counting the days until book 6 is out.

Phoned in like an extended warranty

Not much to say, Mr. Corvin has once again knocked his work out of the park. Read the book, buy it, it was well worth the wait.

Read the Foreword and Afterword, enjoy the ending, it tickles. :)
