Enjoy this gentle and kind historical fantasy romance set in the magical community of Great Britain after the Great War.
Lydia yearns to make her name as a journalist
More to the point, Lydia can't keep going as she has. There's never enough money, nor enough time. She's always scrambling, never sure of the ground beneath her or whether she can rely on anyone for help.
Galen needs to figure out who he is now.
The last year has brought too much change. His parents are rightfully under house arrest, and Galen and his brother are setting up new lives. Restoring the family business after it was nearly run into the ground by a serious of bad decisions is only the first problem.
But Galen knows people.
When Lydia asks help investigating the aftermath of an odd news story, Galen is intrigued. So are his friends in the secret society Galen has been part of since his school years. The investigation begins with a horse race, but it soon leads them from the clubs to a decadent house party to a far more dangerous gathering that could change everyone's life forever.
Point By Point is the sixth book of the Mysterious Powers series, exploring the institutions of Albion during and after the Great War. All of Celia Lake's Albion books exploring the magical community of the British Isles can be read in any order.
It is full of the power of friendship, creative solutions, horse-racing, journalism, and powerful ritual magic. Enjoy this charming romantic fantasy with a swirl of sex set in 1926 with a happily ever after ending!
Celia Lake spends her days as a librarian in the Boston (MA) metro area, and her nights and weekends at home happily writing, reading, and researching.
Born and raised in Massachusetts to British parents, she naturally embraced British spelling, classic mysteries, and the Oxford comma before she learned there were any other options.
Point By Point is an enjoyable addition to the world of Albion. Galen from In the Cards gets his love story with Lydia, a freelance journalist investigating the aftermath of the events of Magician’s Hoard. I liked both characters very much. It was good to see Galen and Julian living better lives after what transpired in In the Cards. Seeing Galen fleshed out more and with a greater maturity was satisfying. Lydia is a great partner for him. I enjoyed her drive and ambition as well as her vulnerability when it came to Galen. The differences in class and affluence are handled well. The mystery that brings Galen and Lydia together is a good 1920s golden age mystery type. Point by Point is good time with a lot of emotional depth, found family and mutual care between the couple. I await the final Mysterious Powers book with great anticipation.
Slow but exciting. Undercover partners in search of a mystery, of answers to questions. Acquaintances to lovers. Competent, decent human beings with close friends. Emotionally satisfying.
Lydia is trying to make a name for herself as an investigative reporter and she thinks she’s found a good story. She needs help though, in getting the right introductions to the people she’s interested in, so she asks Galen, who has recently taken over his father’s estate, to help her. They get involved with horse racing, house parties, and dangerous magic. This is a bit Agatha Christie meets cozy fantasy with less mystery and more romance.
Point by Point is another excellent addition to the intricate world Lake has created. I love all these gentle, magical, cozy historical fantasies. This is a later book and will definitely be batter after having read In The Cards which introduces Galen and tells the story of his best friend Martin, another investigative reporter.
The thing I love best about these books is that all the characters are generally nice, competent people trying to make the world a little better. Even when war, colonialism or abuse of power are the problem, the characters are just trying to do what they can. Mostly, though, the stakes are low, people are kind, and things work out. 😌
I enjoy Celia Lake's work more and more as I go - as per usual, the actual mystery is just a little beside the point, it's the world building and the path of the main characters as they grow and change through the events. And the world is completely up my alley - golden age murder mystery Britain meets an adult equivalent to the Harry Potter wizard world.
Now we have Galen moving on in his life after we followed Martin's discoveries. Most engaging story as Galen meets and begins to discover things for himself. I do enjoy Celia Lakes' writing style...fluid and gentle. The ambiguity surrounding Galen and his relationships to Martin and Lydia certainly got me to think there is another novel or two to come about these budding relationships.
In 1926 Albion, dedicated young journalist Lydia Pyle & radical young nobleman Galen Amberley, member of Schola's radical underground group Dwellers in the Forge, undertake to investigate a swindle that crosses over between magical & non-magical society. While doing so, they fall in love.
