Batman discovers that a hierarchy of macguffin metals are somehow the key to opening an inter-dimensional portal to the dark multiverse. Pursuing this information while refusing to divulge it to anyone (the dumbest bat trope), Batman is captured by powers of the dark multiverse and used to facilitate their takeover of the primary DC universe. The heroes and villains of the defending plane unite to prevent their universe from being consumed by the forces of darkness.

This is incredibly dumb but at least it's boldly dumb. The plot is the usual loosely coherent event spectacle fare but it delivers some awesome character designs and novel conflicts that help make the series visually entertaining at the very least. There's a flying dragon interpretation of the Joker, a series of dark batmen who take the powers of each JLA member, a myriad of metal music video inspired monsters, and every single character under the sun (no matter how well they fit into the narrative). Like waaaay to many characters. It makes the plot even dumber but adds to the schlocky who-gives-a-fuck tone seeing the likes of Dream of the Endless, Plastic Man, and the Court of Owls interact with inter-dimensional Batman demons.

The art is varied and well composed but nothing feels particularly inspired even though much of the character designs and events on display are viscerally satisfying. Though Capullo's issues are still pretty damn good they don't quite have the weight and personality of his earlier Batman work with Snyder.

I really wanted to give this a two, but it was an extremely ambitious story, so, at least it tried.

The problem was it was just too much. Too many threads, overly complicated an convoluted. It just, went very big, but failed to keep the thread together. If I had been reading this monthly, I'd be absolutely lost.

Can't fault the art though. Art was top notch nearly the entire time.

Chaotic mess. Good art, but storytelling was all over the place. Definitely could skip this whole mess but if you are into wacky fun that makes no sense at all, it is worth a read.

Only giving this 2 stars because of the art. Capullo and co are amazing artists.

I didn’t enjoy the story though. I tried to get into it, I don’t hate Snyder as a writer like some but, this was a drag to get through for me. Then again, the concept was too far out there. Im also not crazy over Morrison’s approach with other universes and realms either and this book felt more like Morrison than Snyder for me. I guess I’m a purist in the sense where, I like my stories to hover over one world, earth ideally.

With all that being said, my opinion is probably in the minority when it comes to comic book readers.

It took me a long time and a couple checks out from the library to finish this. The art is amazing, but it suffers from the same problem a lot of DC crossover event events/Multiverse events have which is almost incomprehensively written. There’s so many moving parts, so many cuts to different places, it becomes impossible. More of a 3 1/2 than a three, but still baffling.

I enjoy event series. I always have. I like to re-read them every so often. Generally I'm more of a Marvel Guy - but occasionally something from the distinguished competition lands for me, and "Metal" is one such story. My favorite D.C. event is Final Crisis - it means a lot to me personally - but I'll admit Morrison's take on the line-wide crossover left something to be desired for a number of reasons. "Metal" builds on a lot of the fundamental ideas introduced through Morrison's 2000's - 2010's D.C. projects and feels like the right mixture of Final Crisis' gonzo big ideas and Infinite Crisis' brilliant structure. Oftentimes tie-in books feel tangential or frustrating. Not the case here.

I've waited years for them to put all of Metal into an Omnibus (I hope the wait for Death Metal isn't nearly as long. It would be nice to see a Justice League Omnibus, too), and the wait was worth it. I just had a total blast reading front to back on this story. The build of the book is immaculate with minor gutter loss. It benefits from being a reasonably size, too. A ton of Marvel's most recent event collections are too large to actually read.

The size is a little bit of a double-edged sword though. This book is overpriced. I'm glad I got it during InStockTrade's initial pricing mistake. $65 was a perfect amount to drop on this gorgeous, fun-to-read book. I'm sure I'll return to it again.

Maybe I'll splurge on the Snyder Justice league Deluxe editions...but I'd prefer an Omnibus that includes "No Justice" at the start and "hell Arisen" at the end.

I really enjoyed this story. The start was very strong, it set up a big mysterious threat which was coming. It also showed Batman investigating a mystery which he was being warned against multiple times but wouldn’t listen, it almost seemed like a compulsion - he must solve it regardless of the consequences. Seeing Batman's villains having their own "realm" which the heroes had to get through was fun, and it was interesting seeing the backstory of each of the Dark Knights. I enjoyed the way the story fit together and themes were present throughout the story, tying things together in a satisfying way. There were parts of the story towards the end which started to drag, but I enjoyed the ending and overall thought this story was well done. To me this story meant seeing the worst possible realities, what it looks like to give in to the worst impulses and almost being consumed by this - however by staying true to your values and hope this can be overcome and will win over the dark impulses in the end.

I read "The Batman Who Laughs" a couple of years ago and loved it! However, I knew there was a bigger story than the condensed trade paperback version I'd read. When I heard about this massive omnibus collection, I bought it right away. I should have stuck with the more concise version.

The story here is a mess. Waaaaaay too many characters, locations, and fighting going on to have any semblance of a story. It's more of an excuse for great artwork (which is pretty great throughout). But I keep putting this down and struggle to drum up the interest to pick it back up again. There is no plot to grasp onto here.

I'll keep this copy because: 1.) It was very expensive, 2.) the artwork is top-notch, and 3.) the hardcover is pretty on my bookshelves. But I can'r recommend this collection to anybody.

3.5 stars. I actually liked this event! I think this is the first comic event I read that I enjoyed the additional story tie ins more than the main stuff. I'm not the biggest fan of the multiverse stories and while this one had awesome art and really memorable characters, the story felt so out there that it didn't feel like I needed to catch small details because anything could happen at any point. I think that's why I liked the tie in's so well because it grounded the story and seemed to be more focused. Overall I'm glad I read this but I did enjoy the majority of it

Big, crazy, and wild. A team of dark Batmen led by the Batman Who Laughs drags the Prime universe into chaos. The Dark Multiverse is here!

The story can be chaotic at times but I enjoyed the madness of it all. I thought the concept of the Dark Multiverse was interesting, the idea of the worst fears of characters we know taking form was pretty cool. I enjoyed how each of the Dark Batmen reflected Bruce’s fears of growing old, betrayal, losing loved ones etc.

This is a bombastic comic event and I had a lot of fun with it.

Reading comic book stories in main continuity is tricky because often times it spans years of issues, often from multiple series. Collections like this help a lot, but it can still be iffy if there’s things before the collection starts you’re meant to know. While this does apply a bit here, as the Metal event has been built up to since basically the start of Rebirth, this collection does a solid job catching you up and providing as much of the relevent pieces as possible. You also get a massive amount of content. Highly reccomend.

Finished this a couple months ago actually.
Overall it was an interesting story that could have been reduced by about 20% due to the repetitive and somewhat unnecessary backstories given for what felt like every single bad guy. Don't want to risk spoilers but the story could have been shortened by a wide margin and still read as a worthwhile one.

DC Compendiums is definitively the way to go if you want to read a complete story, its like a an Omnibus but portable.

Metal is a great story, i wouldnt say the greatest but the idea of the dark multiverse and the different versions of Batman to form a justice league is great, fun and enjoyable.

I would recommend this to every JL fan.

This isn’t the masterpiece I hoped it would be. At all… I can’t believe this is written by the same person who wrote the amazing Batman Court of Owls saga and the Black Mirror. Dark Nights Metal is a convoluted mess. Absolutely terrible! How in the world could this event have been released in the world. A big confusing and jarred letdown.

This made me really want to read a Wonder Woman comic. I liked all the evil Batmen and their origins as well. For time in a while I asked myself how the heroes were going to win. Every step forward or break the heroes got was planned for even one of the evil Batmen losing was planned. Overall fun read. 4.5/5

A great read, i really love the batman variants, but i feel like batman played a minor role on this book, and as a batman fan i expected more of him, but this book is actually a solid read, 7/10 would recommend.

Overall a fun read, gets hard to follow at times though and gives way too much time to origin stories, which could have helped pace the main event better.
I’m glad I finally got to read the whole thing but I probably won’t keep it long term.

2.5. That ending, uff. Let's hold hands and sing kumbaya. They got me on me the first half, not gonna lie, but then it became this overly complicated, convoluted mess just to end on a wimp. Great art, though

80/100

Has some cool moments, and the tie-ins help to flesh out the story, but I preferred the simpler, condensed story-telling of the main metal run.

Overall, Dark Knights: Metal is an engaging and thought provoking take on the dc multiverse.

This is a wild clustfuck that does not come together perfect but is competent enough to be entertaining. These multiverse special serve their purpose for reboots but are rarely ever great. Would have given two stars but I decided to grade on a curve.

This book was crazy good. A little hard to follow at times but what can you expect when you bring up multiverse, dark multiverse, anti-matter, and the creation of this and all universes. This book was insane read though and definitely worth trying to find.

This was a fun event that lived up to the hype. Greg Capullo’s art never disappoints and the tie in issues were good. I enjoyed the lotr and metal influence.
