Jimmy Liao (pen name: 幾米；autonym: Lao Fu-Bin, 廖福彬) born in Yilan County, Taiwan. in Fine Arts, with a major in Design. He had worked in advertising companies for 12 years. Now he works as an illustrator. Since 1998, Jimmy published several illustrated books with amazing originality and multi-faceted narratives. He had since set a fashion in creating and publishing illustrated books in local and international markets. Utilizing images as a refreshing form of literary language, Jimmy creates in his works poetic frames that emit charms and appeals. He has published seventeenth popular books so far, and they are translated into English, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Korean and so forth. Being the most popular illustrator author in Asia, creating lots of fantasy and touch hearts cross all generation, however, with low profile personality, he enjoys the family time more, lives a tranquil life and devotes most of his time to work. Immersing in his works is just like to go into Jimmy's inner world, his inviting stories reflect the reality of real life, more and more people are intoxicated by his vivid strokes and his magic realism narratives. Me he montado una paja mental importante con este libro, hasta el punto de que me ha hecho recordar «Un artista del trapecio» de Kafka. De hecho estaba flipando un poco con que un álbum ilustrado destinado a un público infantil contuviera una historia de tal hondura existencial. Y no es que no la tenga, pero los tiros no van por donde yo pensaba. Porque al parecer es un cuento sobre el precio de la fama y el éxito. Si es que lo pone en la misma página web de la editora: «Jimmy Liao nos regala una hermosa historia sobre el precio de la fama y el éxito». A ver, que como fábula o alegoría sobre ese tema es estupenda y tiene bastante más enjundia y poética que muchos libros infantiles que hay por ahí, pero la composición de lugar que yo me había hecho le daba un no sé qué más misterioso y profundo.

Como es difícil apearme del burro, la otra noche le leí a mi hijo «Un artista del trapecio», tras decirle «Ya verás como sí, cómo tiene un airecillo a lo de Las alas, una conexión». Comprensiblemente, al acabar me miró en plan «Yo sé que se te va mucho la olla, mamá, pero te quiero igualmente».

En algo estamos todos de acuerdo: las ilustraciones son una pasada.

The 3-star is because the art is, as usual, so very beautifully done; meaning, you can tell how MUCH I DISLIKE the actual story.

Besides the "I-can't-praise-enough" superb artwork, the only enjoyment I find in this book is, also as usual, in scenes featuring a large crowd, spotting characters from Jimmy's previous books (in this case, I do believe I'm seeing some characters from the then-future books); kind of like playing Where's Waldo/Wally.

Characters I spotted include (keep in mind I have not read Jimmy's every single publication; I might miss some) the couple from 向左走•向右走, the blind girl from 地下鐵, the kid and the moon from 月亮忘記了, the man and the fish from 微笑的魚, and 99% sure 小蝴蝶&小​披風 from the then-future-book 小蝴蝶小​披風.

According to Jimmy's official website, this book has not yet been published in English (the only translated edition with languages using Roman alphabet is the French edition), so for English-only readers who are interested to know what the story is, I usually don't do summaries, but I'll make an exception.

Though that would mean you will literally know how it goes, needless to say, SPOILER AHEAD. I think people should get to decide if they still want to view the gorgeous illustration after having some kind of idea what the story is, when the only way for them to read it is most likely in a language they do not understand.

"Wings" is a fascinating work that immerses us in the life of Mister Wing, a businessman who seems to have it all, until he grows wings on his back. However, the true richness of this story lies in the connection with the autobiographical life of the author, who, like his main character, experiences a difficult life and through this story offers a deep look at the complexities of life, the pursuit of happiness, personal freedom and overcoming challenges.
The metaphor of Mister Wing's Wings not only represent physical freedom, but also emotional and spiritual freedom. In Jimmy Liao's autobiographical context, these wings could be interpreted as a manifestation of his desire to escape the difficulties of his childhood and reach a state of fulfillment.

He leído varios libros de Jimmy Liao, me encantan sus ilustraciones. En esta ocasión el libro "Las alas" es más un cuento de comienzo a fin y no pensamientos y reflexiones .
Trata sobre un director general con una buena vida, tenia dinero, suerte, inteligencia, era guapo, tenia de todo pero mejor. Un día se da cuenta que en su espada le están creciendo alas. Primero comienza a modificar sus ropa y sus muebles para convivir con sus alas, pero al pasar el tiempo se comienza a sentir deprimido y encerrado. Decide operarse para sacarse sus alas y en ese momento de la operación sus alas se vuelven descontroladas y se lo llevan a un lugar apartado de la cuidad. Pasan los días, meses, años y todo el mundo ya ha olvidado al hombre con alas.

This is the first goodreads review I’ve ever written. I can’t even describe how much I love this book. Reading it when I was a child in Singapore showed me a map for the future. And two decades later, I still return to it whenever I need a kind of hand on my shoulder to remind me that things will be okay. I’m glad that this book was dreamed up and let go into the world.

I loved this book - Gorgeous illustrations, had fun looking out for other characters from his other works in this book. A little dark and sad to read but enjoyed the book nevertheless.
