Sarclage

Rate this book

A debut comic by Montreal artist Geneviève Lebleu. Aw, a women's comic: Several middle-class, middle-aged get together, there's tea and gardening! But this is a horror comic, not a cosy mystery, where the women actually do not get along. At all. And something is in that tea, and the plants are sentient. . . and colorful, but a little scary! Weeding the garden can get you in big trouble!

At one point two of them (in an alternate weedy plant universe) wonder what is going on, and they discuss options we as readers have already considered:

--"To me this is just a giant maze."
--"Sometimes I think this is just a never ending bad trip."
--"It's like I'm in a video game and it doesn't really matter what I do."
--"Or maybe we are in limbo."

Discuss.

Anyway, this is a surreal comic that is pretty funny. It looks quite a bit like a horror coloring book. Doesn't really seem to be advocating "get back to nature!" Jesse Jacobs blurbs the book, and so that reminds me of his Safari Honeymoon; a combo of body horror and plant monsters. Little Shop of Horrors with middle-aged suburban women!

I like weird. There are a lot of books that think they're weird, and they're not that weird.

This book is weird. It's weird in a smart, well dosed way. It has a story to tell, eventhough I'm not entirely sure what that is. More importantly, it's funny. I like my weirdness to be served with a lovely little dollop of humour.

I don't know what more to say, really. Have a look at the art, which fits the book pretty perfectly, and see if it appeals to you.

I have been following Montreal illustrator, Genevieve Lebleu, on Instagram for a while now. In her graphic novel, a group of middle age women gather in the suburbs. It is clear there is a lot of past tension between all of them that the reader is trying to decipher. Meanwhile, it is almost as if their aggression is causing the weeds in the backyard to become more and more dangerous. The weeds have little eyes and teeth that start to attack the women one at time. This is perfect for fans of Jesse Jacob's Safari Honeymoon. I always love when authors mix body horror with nature.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.

Overall interesting, weird and a bit supernatural/surreal. I found some parts abruptly revealed information, it was interesting that some details revealed later in the story impact the understanding of previous scenes

the illustrations were great and i loved the idea for the story but the plot felt like it could have been executed a bit better

Loved the amazing art, the surrealism, the choice to center the story around a group of middle-aged women friends.

I loved it! It's a weird story, but it was just the right amount of weird for me. The art is fantastic, and the atmosphere reminded me of Sherley Jackson's The Summer People. I believe that the weed/plants are a metaphor. They symbolize anxiety/ depression, and in the end, Martha is consumed by it (weed=anxiety).

Bizarre. Surreal. Mostly about plant based pod-people, with some family drama in the background. Probably symbolic, but in a way that felt opaque to me. I said "What the fuck?" aloud in a few places. A quick read.

A weird book. (In the most complimentary way)

I like to occasionally read weird books to get me out of a book reafing rut. The art is beautiful with a floral, yet monstrous take. The story is also a bit weird with drama, death, and bitter middle aged women.

à la fin, but oh well🧐

I loved this weird little graphic novel. As others mentioned, it's almost like a twilight zone episode.
