St. Mary's #4

Heartless Boys Never Kiss

Rate this book
AMAZON Top 50 Bestselling Author, SJ Sylvis, brings an addictive interconnected standalone boarding school romance set in a deliciously dark world packed with angst and off-the-charts chemistry.

Sloane

He’s my best friend’s brother, and he’s completely deranged.

Dark, disturbed, and hell-bent on making my life as his new tutor an actual living nightmare, he’s the enemy I should shy away from.

Secrets are locked behind my red lips, just as his are concealed by his pressed tie and crisp school uniform. We are more alike than either of us are willing to admit.

Tobias says heartless boys never kiss...

But he kissed me.

Tobias

She’s my sister’s best friend, tutor, and a liar. But her little white lies are what draw me in.

Sloane is smart-mouthed, self-righteous, and—unfortunately for me—a total knockout. She’s impossible to ignore. As my new tutor, she’s everywhere, waving notecards in my face and shoving study guides under my door.

She is bound and determined to fix me, and I’m obsessed with deciphering every last lie that floats out of her mouth.

I told Sloane that heartless boys never kiss, and after all is said and done, she’ll see just how heartless I am.

Heartless Boys Never Kiss is a full-length, complete standalone in the St. Mary's Series! It is recommended to read the other books before this, but not necessary!

this was incredible. easy sammi’s best work!!!

i loved tobias. i loved sloane. i wish their story was 47 million pages long.

watching them navigate a tutor situation was a pleasure! i loved seeing their walls come down and them be vulnerable with eachother when they claimed they couldnt stand eachother.

tobias was a broody bad boy but with a heart of gold and sloane was a bad bitch who wanted to help everyone and prove herself worthy of friendship.

"If I could love anyone, Sloane White, it would be you."

Wow. Whoa. WOOOOWWWWW. Eeeeeeeps!!! First of all, I was speechless. Secondly, I was speechless. Thirdly, I was still speechless and stunned by how incredible Heartless Boys Never Kiss, the fourth and final book in the St. Mary's series thus far was. I'd like to start my review by exclaiming that I had no idea how the author, Sammi, managed to create masterpiece after masterpiece and keep amazing me by the awesome-sauce that was her books. I mean, seriously, she never failed to impress me with how intricately-crafted her world-building was and how beautifully-written her books were. That being said, Sammi once again outdid herself with this gorgeous gem that was Tobias and Sloane's very own story.

I know, I know...I said this whenever I finished reading Sammi's latest release. For example, I thought for sure the St. Mary's duet would be better than the English Prep trilogy, and that Dead Girls Never Talk would be the best in the series, but ya know what? Heartless Boys Never Kiss totally exceeded my expectations and could easily be the BEST book without doubt. Not only was the book vividly-depicted from both Tobias' and Sloane's POVs, but Sammi's writing also improved so much over the years that it was easier to visualize whatever the main characters were experiencing.

"What are you doing?"
"Follow me, and you'll see." The invitation was nothing more than a sentence with words strung together, but it went straight to my wobbly legs, pushing me up from the table as I ran straight into a deadly nightmare that I'd hope to have a happily ever after.

What made me love the book most was definitely the protagonists, Tobias and Sloane. Tobias appeared to be this dangerously dark, broody, and heartless boy from the beginning and apparently, he never wanted anyone to get close to him for fear that he might scare them away with his messed-up past and messier mind.

"Welcome to my fucking life, Sloane. Always faced with another wrong decision that's worse than the last. Pick the lesser of two evils, baby."

However, the Snow "Sloane" White here somehow successfully made him let down his guard eventually and better yet, further let us sneak a peek at his wounded heart. Little did I know that beneath the hard exterior of Tobias lied the softest cinnamon roll I’d ever had the pleasure to discover. *heart eyes*

She was everything I wanted in my future and everything I needed in my past.

What’s more, Tobias wasn’t the one with tons of unspeakably dirty secrets. Our beloved Sloane also had a fair share of mysterious and somewhat troublesome history. Never in a million years would I expect that both of them were connected in THAT way and the revelation in the end totally blew my mind. Besides, the creepiness of some scenes in this book totally haunted me after closing the book. Thankfully, the rest of this book was pretty amazing and I simply couldn’t stop recalling my favorite parts! My top fav was definitely the overall transformation from Tobias; his character development was hands-down one of the best I’d ever witnessed and I looked forward to what his promising future might hold.

All in all, Heartless Boys Never Kiss was literally THE BEST not only in this series but probably from Sammi!!! I couldn’t recommend this book enough; even though it could be read as a stand-alone, I’d still HIGHLY SUGGEST you pick up the entire series! Moreover, there’ll be a BONUS EPILOGUE for Tobias and Sloane’s HEA coming this December as a lovely Christmas treat so don’t forget to sign up to Sammi’s newsletter and stay tuned. Lastly, I just wanted to let you know that after savoring this book, glow sticks, cherry lollipops, Cheetos, and stuffed animals would never EVER be the same. #IYKYK *wink*

“I’m not afraid of you because I’ve seen who you really are. I’ve seen you.”

The St Mary’s saga continues to slay, and Author SJ Sylvis has outdone herself in this newest sensation. Heartless Boys Never Kiss is an emotional masterpiece! From the very first page, I was consumed with this romance that hijacked my heart and mesmerized my mind the whole time reading. Heartless Boys Never Kiss blew me away! With vividly drawn characters and passionate prose, Sylvis seamlessly brings to life a book so broken, so bold and so beautiful that it shines and shatters through the pages with a paralyzing intensity felt everywhere.

Heartless Boys Never Kiss is an addictive best friend’s brother romance brimming with heart, heat, and a hero that will bring you to your knees. Playing an intensely intoxicating cat and mouse game, this hero and heroine combust with pasts of tangled truths and messy misconceptions. Broken sees broken and while Tobias and Sloane are plagued by demons, they are the balm to each other’s souls: two complex, compassionate, and shattered souls who together are whole.

I burned for this book that branded me, rendering me breathless, a devastatingly beautiful collision of dark and light that nearly brought me to my knees. Calling Heartless Boys Never Kiss a bully romance doesn’t do it justice because it’s so much more. It’s a story of soulmates, serendipity, strength, and survival. It’s gripping, gut-wrenching, messy, moving, and oh so meaningful. I was utterly lost in this love story that stole my breath, heart, and tears while slicing and slaying my soul.

Hands down, Heartless Boys Never Kiss is the best story in this spellbinding series and easily a top 2022 romance.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ beautifully broken stars

Before the book was even written I said Tobias was going to be my fav& I stand by what I said.

I am stunned by the character development in HBNK. Honestly, I think this is Sammi's best work. This book is different from the rest, in my opinion, IT IS SO MUCH MORE. It isn't about the smut or the plot or anyone but Tobias. I'm not even going to lie, but Sloane who? hehe I love her though.

But really, it had me feeling a lil different reading Tobias pov. I felt everything he felt through the pages: ( not literally though because I read it on my kindle ) his anger, loyalty, indecisiveness, his need to be want better, his desire to be alone, love& hate, most importantly, when he felt excluded. Even though he never was. You can feel how he wants a connection with his dad, even though he doesn't want to admit it. With Gemma, even though he doesn't open up to her. With his friends, even though he acts like he isn't part of the group. With Sloane. The fact that he thinks he isn't worthy of a normal life breaks my heart.

You can see as you're reading how he slowly starts growing. He starts realizing things like: How he isn't alone as he thinks, how it's okay to feel something other than anger& hatred, that he can open up to the people that love him and not feel judged, that he's more than just a killer/"monster". That he isn't alone. Which is why I love this book for its character development.

SPOILER

Now, his relationship with Sloane. I love them together! Their relationship felt the realest and most meaningful. Maybe it's the fact that it was slight slow burn or that 3 year gap, but it felt genuine. I love how Sammi didn't just let Tobias be the same ol' him, but instead added a depth to him. He wanted to be better person for himself and for Sloane, and he gave himself that chance. He knew Sloane deserved better, and instead of settling for trying he actually did something about it. It's not something you read in books often, sometimes it'll just be the fmc settling for the way the mmc is, but not here. AND I LOVE IT. At first it kinda hurt knowing he was leaving, but it made sense. That's what made it all the better.

Quick Intermission-

Here's my fav scene:
I took my hand from her hip, and I rested it over her heart, feeling the tiny muscle beating hard. The lace of her bra scratched my palm as I spread my fingers. "But now, I see this. Your heart is pure, Sloane." I grabbed her wrist gently and moved her hand from my shoulder and put it over my chest. "And now this is invested"

This made my heart all mushy& now it will forever be engraved in my mind <3

This review is getting a little lengthy so I'm going to end it by saying that HBNK has easily become one of my fav reads. But as you know a book isn't perfect so I'm going to be honest here ( not just because I have too lol ). One, the plot wasn't all that, yes I like it, but comparing it to the books in the series it's less dark and ordinary. By that I mean, it's underwhelming. I expected something darker? Harsher? Idk what I expected tbh, but it wasn't this. And I don't mean that in a mean way! I just know it needs more, the way they solved their "lil situation" felt rushed. And not a lot happened with that. ( yk the phone calls, sort of threats, etc )

Two, this is a best friend's brother trope so ofc there's always that issue of whether the sibling will or will not be okay with the relationship. And again, I felt that Sloane made a big deal over nothing. Did she not know her best friend? I mean, even I knew Gemma would be okay with it. She went through all that stress of not being able to tell her& for what? In literally 2 secs everything was all good. ( I'm talking about after the blackmail btw )

Lastly, Sloane's character. Ugh I hate myself for saying this, but I didn't care about her as an individual character. She seemed so plain. I expected more based from the previous books. I imagined her as the badass in the friend group, and I got the opposite. She's all about her friend group ( even she says so ), but I got the opposite. There wasn't many scenes with them besides the parties and even then it was short scenes. I feel as if she's a different character than from GGNR, BBNF, and DGNT. I could be remembering this wrong tho since it's been a while since I've read them. Don't get me wrong though, I love TobiasSloane!!!!!!

Anyways that's it. Sorry, I had so much to say!

And because my heart can't take it, I'm ending it with an amazing quote:

"...you're my goddamn sun, and I will fight like hell to find my way back to you. You don't have to wait for me, but I'll always wait for you."

🤞🏼🧸✨🤍

Okay I lied one more:

"You have some good in there, Tobias."
"Only for you."

🥹💗🪐🫶🏼

the ending BROKE me actually

I would literally bark for Tobias I love him so much

Tobias and Sloane mean the world to me and I'm going through withdrawal without them. Their story was such a perfect blend of everything that is St. Mary's, and them together is everything to me. The last chapter before the epilogue made me sob and while the epilogue gave me closure I need a second one to give me more of them together.

Sloane is just my kind of girl, she smart and kind and strong. Seriously, Sloane is so strong for not only the way she holds herself after her past but in the way she continues to fight for Tobias. She refused to let Tobias feel anything but support even when she hated him. I loved that Sloane just was not willing to give up on anyone in her life who mattered, she not only was an amazing friend to Gemma but always wanted what was best for Tobias. If I had to pick a St. Mary's girl to have by my side as a backup it would 100% be Sloane that girl was as fierce and protective as it gets and I was obsessed with her.

Oh depressed and scarred Tobias, you can't help but love him and feel sorry for his past. Tobias was seriously obsessive with Sloane even when he hated her you could just tell he was fixated on Sloane. I hated how he felt that he didn't deserve love and support from anyone around him. Tobias was raised with a dark and scary past something that no one should ever be okay after, and not only did he let Sloane show him how to heal and love, but he showed us that he still loves and protects those around him. Tobias fought till the end for those he loves, even if he didn't realize it.

Tobias and Sloane were definitely my favorite St. Mary's couple however this was not my favorite St. Mary's book. I love SJ and I love everything she does, but the ending felt incomplete. Right when I started to see Tobias fully grow and become who he was meant to be the book ended. I just loved this book and the story so I was 100% greedy for more. When Tobias finally started opening up and I wanted to see him and Sloane once he had finally matured, but we just didn't really get that. HOWEVER, I still loved this book and would still recommend to anyone but I was just so invested in this series and so I know I was super connected to it and felt like I needed more.

Sylvi you never disappoint me. Your writing is truly phenomenal. This story will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. It will hit all your heartstrings and will have you crying from all these pent up emotions.

Tobias and Sloane are my new favorite couple in the St Mary’s book series. They’re so freaking hot and will have you panting for more. Tobias was someone hard to read and pinpoint but it was Sloane who broke down his walls and made him feel. Such a great read!!

The St Mary’s series is too good and just keeps getting better. Thank you Sylvi for writing such an amazing book.

Tobias is as broken as the birds Sloane so tirelessly tries to restore back to good health. He is tattered from childhood and beyond. Tobias does not think he is deserving of love, nor does he believe he could love. He is a new St Marys student, her best friends brother, who is desperately trying to keep his past “fixer” experience deeply hidden.

Sloane is a fixer in her own right. Though, her fixing is closer aligned with the moral compass. She is filled with deep rooted compassion, protection, and a fierce sense of loyalty for her friends. Her sorted past, though she had very little control over the outcome, continues to haunt her in more ways than she knows.

Tobias needs Sloane, whether he wants to admit it or not. Deep down Sloane craves to help him, whether she knows it or not. The outcome? A collision of sexual tension, angst, and temptation. Guilt over what is right may not be enough to stop Sloane in her tracks when it comes to Tobias, a fact that is terrifying to her. For Tobias, the feelings that develop feel more like a mirage. The ending will grip you by the chest and will NOT let go.

Do not miss another 5 star read from the St Mary’s world, Tobias may be my new favorite “hero” and I can’t stop thinking about him.

“I’ve never craved someone’s attention as much as I crave yours.”

This book actually surprised me, it’s been so long since I’ve felt this emotionally invested. The emotions I felt, lorddd 😫 When they felt sad, I felt sad. It’s so rare for characters to actually affect my mood but they did <3

I loved both Tobias & Sloane. The tension between them was just amazing. Nothing was rushed, the timing it was just PERFECT 😫 You could feel their love through the screen. I loved that Sloane always reminded Tobias that she would always look for the good inside him.

Tobias never hated Sloane, he just didn’t like how she could get to him. As I read, the shift in his demeanor, it wasn’t like whiplash, it was gradual, making it *chef’s kiss*. Having his POV definitely made the book so much better. I looked forward to reading his chapters more than Sloane’s, I could vividly feel & imagine his emotions. I wanted to hug him so bad 🥹 I loved the way Sloane would describe him as being very laid back & nonchalant but in reality homeboy was head over heels for her, all his thoughts were about her.

“I know that because he looks at you the way I look at you when no one is watching.”

One of my top reads this year & I want others to read it so they can experience the emotions I did 😩 I’m smiling so hard just thinking about it. Their relationship felt so real to me. It’s also making me sad I connected with them so much because it reminds just how single I am 💀

I ADORE this book! It’s fantastic! I literally put off finishing it because I didn’t want it to end!
I highlighted over 100 notes in it and that was just the stuff that really stood out right away!

The spice!!!!!!!!!!! *sign*

The chemistry! The plot! The angst! *screams*

Tobias is everything! Mysterious? ✔️Hot? ✔️Funny? ✔️Protective? ✔️Bad boy? ✔️
“I may not know what x + y equals, but I know twenty-seven different ways to hide a body.” 😂
He was so broken and watching him fall in love was so precious. He was written so well and paired with Sloane, the firecracker that she is, was perfect! She turned out to be wild! She was 10000 times better than who I imagined here to be in the earlier books in the series. Shiner! YES! He killed me! I really really enjoyed the character development in this book!! I feel like I met the characters in the earlier books in the series, but I got to know them in this one.

Every book of Sammi’s just gets better and better and I become an ever bigger fan after each one.

READ THIS NOW! It’s so worth the emotional journey! It’s raw and honest. It shows growth but also passion. It doesn’t sugar-coat the hard parts of love and relationships. The storyline and plot is developed so well! This book really hit the nail on the head when it comes to the whole ‘you have to love yourself before you can love and be loved by anyone else’ idea.

“The truth was, there wasn't a bone in my body that thought I would be able to truly love someone, and that was a truth bitter it hurt to swallow.” 💔

It was spicy, yes, but the “kissing” aspect to this (you’ll have to read it to know what I’m talking about) was my absolute favorite part. It was so wholesome and gutted me! I’m still speechless and in awe of what I just read.

Thank you so so so much, Sammi, for this ARC. You’re an amazing writer!! Can’t wait to see what you do next!!
