November 4, 2025i wont bother rating this.
i was gonna churn out a whole-ass essay but then i remembered that i hate writing essays so im not gonna.
painter of the night started out with a candid look on the society of the late joseon, the cruelty and injustice of its hierarchies, and then! then, it decided to devolve into a soap opera. idk maybe it was always supposed to be this way (in which case pardonnez-moi for getting a touch complex and emotional here) but for a minute it felt like byeonduck had something different in mind.
i honestly think it had the potential to stand on an equal ground with the disgustingly brilliant fever dream of a thriller that was Killing Stalking. but imagine for a second that KS didn't end the way it did. imagine instead that sangwoo saw the error of his ways, professed his undying love for bum and they moved to usa, got married and settled in a suburban mcMansion with a white picket fence, three pomeranians and an adopted kid from a third world country. i mean...the horror!
but thats what happens with painter of the night, more or less. so lets crack open a bottle of sparkly water and mourn the masterpiece that never happened.

I just finished the next seasons and what should I do now? 😭😭😭😭😭😭
My poor baby Kyum what has been done to you
................
Well this was certainly....something.
I thought it would be different tbh. I didn't read the blurb but it turns out it's full of noncon which you know.... hmmm
I found myself intrigued to see where it goes.
Yoon was an asshole for the whole manhua but you could also feel something changing in him, however small.
Let's see if he shifts more in volume 2.
I will say that the artwork is just BEAUTIFUL.

[CW:TW // Rape - non consensual (a TON and I mean a TON of this) and abuse. Please do not read if you are faint of heart. The story itself needs warnings but since they don’t provide any I’ll add some here for anyone interested.]
Seungho Yoon is a fucking psychotic narcissist AND part time rapist WTH! Although I wish I could beat his head in with a bat while spitting in his food I know that all these characters aren’t so one dimensional. BUT HOLY CRAP DOES THIS MAKE HIM ALMOST COMPLETELY UNREDEEMABLE!!!! I fought my way through this one because of all of the good reviews I’ve heard over the last few months. So far, Nakyum is such a puppy and I love him! We have to cherish our little Nakyum Baek with all our hearts! I’m ready to go to war for this little one!
With all that being said the art is ethereal and breathtaking and the story itself has so much potential its off to a pretty strong and unique start. The characters seem so complexed and hurt but refuse to acknowledge their own damaged hearts. It’s hot (in more ways then one but more so controversially hot then anything) , it’s SPICEY, it’s gruesome. Read at your own risks babes.

Quick Overview
Painter of the Night is an erotic, dark romance boys love set in the Joseon era. This story is about a young and ashamed painter of erotica and a violent and seductive nobleman who forces the painter to become his personal painter. The relationship starts toxic with Yoon Seungho forcing Baek Na-kyum to paint for him against Baek Na-kyum's will. It's a slow-burn dark romance where both slowly fall in love with each other.
Quick disclaimer
This read is not for the faint-hearted. It features sensitive topics such as power imbalances portrayed by sexual assault, torture and more. This review is for all volumes, so I will (without spoilers) mention how the story progresses.
The sensitive topics only become worse as the story progresses. An example is that the sexual violence commited by one attacker is going to be commited by multiple attackers later on.
My usual reading preferences
I read a variety of genres but erotica or dark romance isn't part of it. The reason for that is that I don't enjoy reading anything that glorifies or romanticises toxic dynamics or topics. When I started reading Painter of the Night I was not aware what I was getting myself into. I considered dropping it very soon, 'cause it triggered me quite a lot. It didn't disappear; I stayed uncomfortable till the very end.
Why I didn't drop it
Psychological intense
I didn't drop it 'cause it was psychological intense, something I enjoy reading when it isn't romanticised. The high emotional stakes added to it.
Complex character dynamics
I also believed that the character dynamics were complex, 'cause it wasn't always easy to understand what has driven characters to react the way they did (towards another character). Their internal struggles were often portrayed in a subtle way—making it easy to overlook. So, I became curious to find out if the characters (especially Yoon Seungho) would develop for the better or if they stay toxic. The narrative romanticised the abuse, so I was hoping that the toxic dynamics would stop as the story progressed. I wanted to see a positive transformation. I wanted the attacker (Yoon Seungho mainly) to grow from past experiences and from his current relationship with Baek Na-kyum. I wanted him to realise his wrongdoings and see how he would change.
Losing hope
As the story progressed nothing changed for the better for a long time. The power imbalances stayed the same. It stressed me to read without seeing any positive changes. It felt as if the positive transformation would never arrive.
The spark of hope
After a while I noticed a change. I couldn't identify if it was a good or bad one, but I noticed a shift of perception by Yoon Seungho—he started to develop awareness for his actions. He starts to become more considerate towards Baek Na-kyum. While it didn't completely stop being toxic it felt a bit more safe compared to how it started. The power imbalance was still visible, but it got reduced.
Emotional payoff
While it wasn't completely what I imagined it to become and I wasn't completely satisfied I was still glad that their relationship became more stable. It felt safer and less stressful to read. My hope was that Yoon Seungho's new awareness was his chance to develop for the better and make both of them heal from it. One can't excuse or forget what happened, but one can embrace the awareness one gained and make the best out of it—accept and admit one's wrongdoings by stopping them. I enjoy tension in stories, but I enjoy it even more when it pays off emotionally.
My personal conflict
I have an inner conflict after I finished reading this book series. I didn't enjoy how this story romanticised abuse. I also felt uncomfortable most of the time while reading. The only reason why I stayed was to see if the relationship transforms into something more healthy; more safe and stable. The abuse never stops and it never truly becomes healthy or safe. It becomes safer later on—but never completely safe or healthy. I hoped for both characters to heal from this traumatic experience—that there was still a chance of redemption—but I was wrong. I was glad that the relationship became safer, but since it never became healthy I was never truly satisfied by this read.
Outroduction
Ultimately I wasn't satisfied by this read 'cause it didn't develop the way I hoped for. I'm still glad that I stayed till the end to see the slight character growth and the reduce of tension. I enjoy dark stories, but not dark romance, 'cause it almost always embraces the darkness instead of confronting it.

The drawing style of this manhua / graphic novel is mesmerising. That’s why I finally caved and bought the whole story for way too much money. I’m not sure the story will keep me intrigued because it’s relatively slow paced (except for the porn that’s there from the start and not slow-paced at all 😂). Those drawings though. I’ll probably rush through it all because they are so good; especially the ruthless nobel Yoon Seungho (our ML) is picture perfect, drawn like a sculpture of a Greek god and he’s got some mesmerising eyes which makes me want to excuse how much of an asshole is. Our MC (Baek Nakyum) looks like a child compared to him but that’s because a) he’s much smaller in height and very slim and a bit androgyn and b) his so very naive and timid at the beginning of this story. If he weren’t stubborn like a mule and friendly to the servants in the household he wouldn’t have impressed me because he spends a lot of time crying. Don’t get me wrong Yoon Seungho gave him reasons to cry but he cried more for unreasonable than reasonable reasons. Like I said Yoon Seungho was an asshole and did and take whatever he wanted. But it’s pretty clear that he’s obsessed with Baek Nakyum over more than just his paintings.
Anyway, I’m hooked now and I will definitely read the other 4 volumes.
Content warnings: non-con / rape (depending how you look at it), blackmail, emotional abuse

May 9, 2024➸ chapter 17 (may 20/24): i'm putting this on hold for now, it's not really holding my attention.
➸ pre reading review 🎨
i actually attempted this a while back and couldn't get into it after reading the first couple chapters, but the fomo really got me. so i'm finally reading this because i need to see what all the hype is about. the plot is very ✨ unique ✨ so i’m excited. i've heard from a few of my mutuals on here that there is some serious character development, so of course i'm immediately intrigued.

This is hard to rate, because I liked some things and I disliked others. The art is A+, and it's about a male painter of erotic paintings and the male noble who is obsessed with them which is a very interesting premise, but I personally expected the noble to want Na-Kyum as their personal painter and that would be the start of their story, but instead, he wanted Na-Kyum to paint his sex-escapades by watching them in the act, which I didn't really like. I got a little more on board when their dynamic started to shift, and Seungho became not only obsessed with Na-Kyums creations, but himself.

Everyone in here is either a psychopath, a egomaniac, needs therapy, or any combination of the abovementioned.
There are so many CW and is so twisted that it would take me a long time to list them all.
However I am absolutely addicted to it and need to know what happens next. No, I did not stayed very late finishing the first season (lies, I totally did).

From just this first volume, killing and stalking is the better erotic love story between a psycho and his hostage. I don’t understand the psycho character’s reasoning. I know it’s earlier but he is already coming off as not redeemable. The art is good although I’ll agree with other reviewers about the eyes. The book is definitely sexy. I don’t mind seeing a pathetic bottom character but I don’t think I like the top. Also, I get that these poor power dynamic relationships always have non-con so you’ve been warned. 2.85/5
