Ten years ago Josie’s life split in two Before and After. There was a tragedy that night! And she couldn’t remember so much of it! But it always finds a way in her nightmares. That’s why she is a successful painter! She paints her pains, her rage, her nightmares, her demons. That pain wasn’t enough, Cole broke Josie’s heart after that and pushed her away. At the time when she needed him the most!

"Whenever you are in the world, whatever happens, please believe all I ever want is for you to be safe and happy. I’ll do anything for you except stay. Anytime, anywhere, for as long as we live. Anything. Remember that."

Now after ten years she’s coming back to her hometown, the town her first love is still there, but she doesn’t know anything about him anymore. He is not the boy she once knew and loved.

The light had gone out on our relationship, once so filled with love and friendship. Nothing was left but the dark.

Told in dual POV, 1st person. It’s well-written, slow-paced, and a bit angsty. My only issue was that it wasn’t a steady read for me. It’s the first installment in the "What If" duet and it ends with a huge cliffhanger (and I should say I didn’t see it coming! I had another theory and obviously I was wrong). Overall, it was a good read and hope you enjoy it as well!

I still taste her name in my mouth. It used to be my favorite word, even if I haven’t said it aloud in years. But it’s gone through my head a million times, always attached to a question. Where is she? How is she? Is she happy?

There are many authors that I love, but only a small group that I hold up high on a pedestal, and Nina Lane is a very special author to me. I know that I will forever swoon and sigh deeply whenever I hear the name Professor Dean West. Nina created one of my most cherished series, Spiral of Bliss and it looks like, once again, she has written a story about two people who were lucky enough to find that one epic love with each other, but then were torn apart by an unthinkable tragedy.

Nearly a decade has passed where Cole and Josie have not been in each other’s lives. Thousands of miles, painful memories, and heartbreak have built an insurmountable wall between them. Now Josie has returned home and the couple soon comes face to face. All the feelings of their overpowering love and incredible loss come rushing back in.

Will they be able to find their way back to each other? Or are they doomed to live a lifetime apart, secretly pining away for one another?

Here are my overall ratings:

Heroine: 5
Plot: 4.5
Angst: 4.5

Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 5

Nope. Sorry. I hate books where the hero plays the martyr and breaks up with the heroine and fucks other women during the separation. Especially when the heroine spends the next 10 years miserable and unable to get over him. Sorry, no. He needed to stay celibate and I needed him to not be a complete piece of shit to her once he sees her again. She just jumps right back into his arms after he broke her heart. Pathetic.

Josie Mays fell in love with a boy named Cole Danforth. She had everything she'd ever wanted and he was the one thing in life she was always certain of. Then in a split second her entire life is obliterated. Her heart is demolished and in its place is anger and resentment. Darkness flooded her life and she's left feeling shattered and broken. She can't let go of the past and all that's left of the boy she loved so wildly is memories and her occasional vivid fantasies. After ten years she returns home to Castille and comes face to face with Cole. He's changed drastically. He's all man now, and hardened and intense. The town had always viewed him in a negative light, but now his reputation was as the town villain. He'd turned into a ruthless, ambitious, corporate tycoon. She doesn't see any traces of her Cole when she looks at him. Is the boy she once loved still in there somewhere?

Cole Danforth has tried to move on with his life after Josie. He thought he'd never see her again. She was never supposed to come back home. Now she's everywhere he turns, and as much as he tries to avoid her he can't escape the old emotions from resurfacing. She was the woman who once gave him hope for the future, but nothing went as planned. He will have to endure being around her, and try to keep his distance as much as possible. He believes he's not worthy of Josie, and is determined to do right by her.

As much as Josie and Cole try to fight their undeniable connection they will always share an unbreakable bond that time and distance can't erase. They both miss the love and friendship they once shared. When the flame between them is once again ignited they burn for one another and can't resist the passion that's still between them. Will they get a second chance at love, or will their past destroy them?

I absolutely love this series! Nina Lane has me on the edge of my seat with this story and constantly just wanting more. I adore this couple and the beautiful, deep love between them. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book! I NEED MORE!!!

-He's still the only man in the world who knows exactly how to kiss me.

-The touch of his lips is a thousand things all at once- a shock, a homecoming, an explosion.

-Thoughts slip away. Time disappears. It's only me and him again, sinking into the private world only we could ever understand.

-When I was eleven, I had very few defenses against Josie Mays. Now, at thirty-three, I have none. She demolished them with one look.

I need Book 2 - If We Fly now! I gobbled If We Fall up. Once I started I couldn’t put it down. I needed to know why Josie and Cole had been apart for 10 years. Why had he changed from a sweet, caring guy who dreamt about the ocean to a ruthless businessman. Why did he leave Josie? What happened? All I knew was they had a pure love. A love that encompassed everything for Josie. Every firsts she had was with Cole. When they met when Josie was nineteen Cole didn’t own a lot but it wasn’t important to Josie. All she wanted was Cole and she made him feel invincible and that everything was possible. So what happened in those ten years.

If We Fall shows a brooding, isolated Cole who’s only concern is his work. He has his uncle but that’s it. When Josie returns after ten years he does everything in his power to drive her away and out of town. She hates him for how he left her. She’s in town because of work and for her sister. Josie is strong and resilient, tries not to let Cole rattle her but she’s struggling with who he has become. But underneath it all he’s still her Cole.
They still have so much unresolved issues and feelings between them and it comes across the pages. Their memories only made them struggle even more to hold their distance but when you have a love like Josie and Cole does it becomes pretty damn difficult to resist giving in to their lust and urges. Their chemistry is palpable and jumps off the pages.

If We Fall has a steady pace that kept me entertained and intrigued from start to finish. Questions answered and some left unanswered. A special cameo from a certain professor made me smile. Don’t get me started on that ending! Fantastic. Didn’t see it coming and I’m so excited to read If We Fly.

My first book by Nina Lane was the prequel to this book, IF WE LEAP. And, in a few pages, the author has conquered me. I was crazy to read the continuation of the story of Josie and Cole. In IF WE LEAP we discover how the couple met when they were children until they grown and became a couple. It was a great introduction. However, the author left the drama for IF WE FALL. And, oh my God, what a story! I got stuck in the pages, I even hated Cole and then fell in love for him again. And then, the author topped off at the end of the first part of this story leaving me in a awe since in none of my theories, I came to think of this result. And how I love an author who surprises me! I finished IF WE FALL even more anxious to read the sequel than when I started.

I NEED IF WE FLY!! And I already foresee a lot of heartache.

Why did it take me so long to read this author's work? Nina's writing is so good to read and flows in a way that you do not even notice the number of pages, you get immersed in the story. Cole and Josie really love each other. It is palpable. We feel that within that supposed hate it really was a lot of real love. I can't wait for IF WE FLY and thank God it will not take long to launch. I highly recommend it!!!

Meu primeiro livro da Nina Lane foi o prequel deste livro, o IF WE LEAP. E, em poucas páginas, a autora me conquistou. Fiquei louca pra ler a continuação da história de Josie e Cole. No prequel, descobrimos como o casal se conheceu quando eram crianças até o quando cresceram e se tornaram um casal. Foi uma ótima introdução. Entretanto, a autora deixou o drama pra IF WE FALL.

PRECISO de IF WE FLY!!

Wow! I'm whole heartedly LOOOOOVING this storyline and I can't wait for the next book!! Everything from the backdrop of New England to the tragic undercurrent running beneath the entire book to the sensual second chance romance that oozed with tension and longing had me turning each page desperate for more.

I forgot what an absolutely BREATHTAKING writer and storyteller Nina Lane truly is. I fell in love with her Spiral of Bliss series but have somehow missed out on her last few releases. But this duet has resurrected my obsession. I was completely enveloped in the heartbreaking dynamic between Cole and Josie. I felt and smelled and tasted every detail through Lane's vivid, descriptive prose. I was reminded of precisely what I love in a good romance, in any book, through this author's lush imagery and evocative storyline. I was so IN this book, I never wanted it to end.

This story is mysterious and heart wrenching and so unbelievably steamy. It's rich with emotion, a closed off jerk of a hero, and a heroine just trying to put the pieces of her broken life back together. It was beautiful and it tugged painfully at the heart strings, and it left my chin hanging in anticipation for what's to come.

4,5. Realmente adorei esse livro, apesar de achar que não aprofundou muito na personalidade dos personagens principais, apenas pelos flashbacks.
Vale a leitura.

“Josie, you’re amazing. So much better than a chocolate factory.”

Ten years have passed since something awful happened to Josie and Cole. Josie's been living in San Francisco but she comes home, ready to face her demons (and there's A LOT), help her sister and paint a mural for the town.

Naturally, Cole is also in town and he also has some demons...he just handled things a bit differently that Josie. You'll want to hate him but you really can't.

Likes:

💓The town folk and the mural.
💓Key chains.
💓How Cole really is.

description

Dislikes:

💔Vanessa's lawsuit and her attitude.
💔How Cole presents himself.
💔Josie's demons.
💔How short this book is.

This is a good addition to the start of the prequel but is a very short, 166 pages. So, there's just enough to get you interested and then it's over. Luckily, all the books have been released and you don't have to wait.

DNF at 55%....for my kindle's safety, I am stopping here.

First and foremost, the prequel for this series was just the dangle of a tease I needed to jump into this new series by a new to me author. I enjoyed it so much that I was so excited to jump into the next book, hoping for some good heartache, some real emotions to pull from. Sign me up!! From where Cole and Josie began, leading all the way up until "their last kiss", I was for sure their story was going to lead me on an emotional journey. I was wrong.

I tried. I seriously, honestly tried but I couldn't make it through this first full book. What happened between the prologue and the first book? I wish I knew. It was like reading two different authors telling two different stories. Maybe she planned it that way. Maybe she meant for the love to be so *happy* and the fallout be so *painful* - after all, that would make perfect sense. But reading it shouldn't have been painful....

First, Cole is NOT a man. He's a coward. I understand his supposed guilt, but will never, ever excuse his reasonings for leaving her. That put a very sour taste in my mouth from the very beginning, some drama for no damn reason. And I honestly don't think there was anything she could do or say to make me feel otherwise. --> However, skipping to the end and reading that cliffhanger put a lot into perspective, but I only did that because I knew I wasn't going to finish it. Hindsight and all. The delivery of the entire plot failed for me. It went from tempting me with the prequel to pissing me off with the first book.

I do realize that not every plot is going to be original, I really do get that. But this one felt very forced and not at all original....a regurgitated plot that spanned many of the books/movies we have all read/seen. I mean, we've all read "this" story with all the twists and happenings - it was not really formulaic in a sense, but it was very predictable with each turn. Unfortunately, there was nothing enticing me to keep going. It felt like it dragged on, and with ridiculous phrases and actions/happenings, I knew I just needed to quit so I didn't leave with a salty taste in my mouth. I mean, with sentences like this, I don't even know....

"His cock was a pulsing rod inside me, throbbing against my inner walls."

I mean, really? That is sooo....yeah, no. Mmm mm. Nope. *shakes head* Can't do it, sorry.

Let's add in some seriously ridiculous anger/rage. Cole had literally ZERO reasons to be as angry at Josie as he was, but let's set that aside for later. Let's move along to his anger at the town that was completely misplaced. I saw and understood that angry POV from when he was younger because that's a young, immature person's way of thinking and I get it!! I really do...but to carry it on and allow it to fester in the fashion that it was, and with such tenacity and volatility? NO!! Grow up! Move on! Get out of there!!! Why are you even there?? It's doing NOTHING but dragging you down. Talk about a chip on your shoulder. Geez.

Josie had some rather interesting fears, and while I have never lived through/dealt with them - so I definitely don't understand them, they felt very.....off. I mean, it's been 10 years aaand you still can't function? I guess I don't get it - but maybe it's because I don't want to understand at this point anymore, so I don't feel compelled to empathize. I felt his anger resonating off of him and he came across as a royal jerk. Cole played the part really well, especially when we knew deep down what was supposedly causing it, but also where his thoughts truly resided. With his anger and her fears and phobias, it was a match made with an overused formula.

Why this bothered me on top of everything else, I'll never know but he was constantly hard around her, feeling 'it' down his thigh. Mmmhmmm.....because that's where hard ones go. I get it. Not really, but that's cool.

I have ZERO desire to read the second book in this series, which was telling for me and told me I didn't even need to finish the first. I did, however, go to the end and see what everyone was super excited about and what "twists" they wanted answers for.....and nope. I still have no desire because I can now tell you exactly W.H.Y he is pushing her away and why he never wants her close again. Guilt probably isn't the right answer....but now we are hiding a bigger secret.

It was just super, ridiculously boring for me, but gosh dangit!! It was angering as well!! I hate when a book make me mad. I hate saying that it was boring, because it shouldn't be boring - taking a journey through another's love story should be heartbreaking, emotion-causing, sweet and lively. But when I kept rolling my eyes, page after page, wishing for them to get to the point, I knew I was done.

So now, I sit and question why everyone loved this so much more than I did because this had the potential to tear me up and make me hurt and feel something. I wanted to read this duet so bad. Like, really bad. As much as I tried, I couldn't get through it and that makes me sad. I'm sure I started getting nitpicky near the end, but I just kept getting irked by little things happened....telling sign. sigh

If We Fall by Nina Lane is an utterly raw heartbreaking love story that takes an unexpected twist and turn. Broken flawed characters and raw emotions sets this book apart as Lane grips readers right off the opening pages. Hearts will be torn as Cole and Josie tell their unique story. Josie is haunted by these nightmares and vision whereas Cole is a broken angry bitter man. But what happens when these former lovers are reunited? Can they fall back into that place of love? Or will an unexpected twist be their downfall?

Nina_Lane

As always,Nina Lane sweeps readers away with her profound words and flawed characters. This is a story where you are automatically gravitated to the heartbreak and yearning. Emotions runs deep and throughout the book, readers will be left wondering what’s in store for Josie and Cole in book 2 of the duet.

Series Review

"What the hell happened to you?"
"You happened to me."

Nina Lane is the creator of one of our favourite erotic emotional romance series, The Spiral of Bliss delivering one of our favourite book couples and let's not forget one of our all-time favourite book boyfriends, the divine Professor Dean West, we'll never be able to thank her enough for that man! The Spiral of Bliss series will always remain in our hearts, and so it was with excited expectations that we dove into her new What If series. Eager once again to lose ourselves to Nina Lane's words.
The What If series is one of redemption, second chances and sacrifice, but most of all it's a story of unequivocal love. The soul mate kind born from childhood and it was a love that refused to yield. Not distance, time or tragedy could break the invisible bond that drew Cole and Josie together.

"Cole." She looks up at me, putting her hand on the side of my face. "Don't regret this." I swallow hard. "I could never regret you."

If We Leap is the prequel novella to the duet, and takes us back to those days of innocence between Josie and Cole, giving us an insight into their family life. Josie's full of love and bliss, and Cole's full of sorrow and loneliness, with the following two books taking us back to events that would shape the lives of Josephine May and Cole Danforth.

A devastating tragedy would rip them apart, forcing Cole to leave their tranquil home, hoping his decision would allow Josie to move on, pursue her love of art in San Francisco and turn leave behind the painful memories that would plague her. Ten years later, a project would reunite them, with the bitterness of the past, old wounds and deeply guarded secrets being exposed with painful consequences. Little was Josie to know the sacrifices Cole had made out of love for Josie. What he would endure and become because of those decisions.

"Promise me you'll be okay. Maybe even happy again one day. I can't live without know that. Please."

For the most part we did enjoy this series. The mystery, the questions, the past and present switches all worked very well, however we didn't fully experience the gut wrenching passion, nor the emotional intensity we had hoped their story would incite. There's no doubt Josie and Cole possessed a true soul mate love, and we so wanted to connect with them on that level, and believe us when we say it breaks our hearts to admit that we didn't.

"I'm not the Cole Danforth you used to know." Pain darkens her eyes. "And you have no idea how much that breaks my heart."

For us, the sex needs to enhance the story, and the times we felt the sex in the What If series overwhelmed the emotional aspect of the story, causing us to disconnect emotionally. Whilst we absolutely felt the physical connection, we were left wishing for the feverish intense emotion and the dizzying heights of character and story connection we'd hoped for. Now, please don't be put off by our rating because we know a lot of readers will devour this book and possibly have a differing opinion to us. Reading is indeed subjective and what effectively works for one reader, doesn't necessarily work for another, and we can't convey enough how gutted we are this series didn't give us those lofty emotions we had anticipated.

'What if I had known it would be our last kiss? What if I had known how hard we would fall?'

After that teasing prequel, If I Leap, I eagerly awaited the arrival of this and it was worth the wait. This story picks up ten years later and what a huge difference 10 years have made to this inseparable couple.

In an effort to heal herself and the impending birth of her nephew Josie has returned the place she grew up and has been commissioned to paint a beautiful mural for the people of her home town. Coming back to Castille brings back horrendous memories for Josie from the night her life was ripped apart by tragedy. Everywhere she goes she finds reminders of what she lost. She is plagued by nightmares every night and haunted by what could have been if not for one fleeting moment.

The only thing she does not want to see is Cole Danforth. Fate has a funny way of playing with people though. It turns out that Cole is the first person she crosses paths with and Cole is no longer the sweet boy she remembered loving all those years ago. In fact he is nothing like she expected. All of his plans and dreams as a young man have not been followed through. He is now the living reincarnation of his father – a bitter, ruthless businessman.

The only thing that hasn’t changed is the pull between them, Josie has never stopped loving Cole and despite his indifference towards her she senses that he still feels the same way. She shouldn’t want him at all, after the way he treated her the last time they saw each other. Cole doesn’t want to have anything to do with Josie either but he can’t seem to help himself when she is anywhere near him.

As these two begin to meld into the couple they used to be Josie still struggles with memories and nightmares, finding comfort in Cole is helping her but she feels like the jigsaw puzzle in her head is slowly piecing itself together. Maybe coming back to Castille will reveal more than she ever expected?

‘I’ve wanted so desperately for the truth of us to conquer the horror of what had happened to us.’ - Josie

I have to say that I thought the Spiral of Bliss series could not be topped but Nina has completely captured me with this series. In saying that I did enjoy the fleeting cameo appearance from Professor West! And just in case you need to know there is a jaw dropping cliff hanger at the end of this, you have been warned!

Josie Mays was just nine years old when she decided eleven year old Cole Danforth was going to be her friend. She knew nothing of this reputation of being a “bad kid” but only saw was the boy who saved her from some bullies. Sure, he was grumpy sometimes and liked to be alone, but if anyone could bring him out if his shell it would be her.

In actual fact its ten years that pass before Josie successfully forms her friendship with Cole. He’s finally estranged from his bullying father and within sights of completing his undergrad in Marine Sciences. Maybe it’s the artist in her but she’s drawn to his aura more now so than ever. Their friendship leads to an intense and beautiful relationship that is cut short by tragedy before it truly had a chance to blossom.

At the time of If We Fall Josie Mays has returned to her hometown to pay homage to the family she lost. There would be no warm homing coming from Cole but even so she is shocked by the change she sees in him. Gone is the caring boy she knew, replaced by the calculating businessman who makes it his mission to put a stop to her plans.

“When I was eleven, I had very few defences against Josie Mays. Now, at thirty-three, I have none.”

Cole is fooling no one, he is as dedicated to Josie as he was when he was eleven and I adored the scenes of him letting his defences down. The prequel If We Leap gave us insight into their history but it’s here that the story really makes an explosive development.

Enthralled by their chemistry, I was hard pressed deciding which aspect of the story I enjoyed the most. Addictive and stylish a read, Nina has left me counting the days until the final crescendo of this duet.

Before I ramble on about my adoration for Lane's first installment in her new "What If" duet series, I highly recommend reading "If We Leap." It's free, a quick and steamy read with all the feels, and it introduces this lovable couple while giving insight into their beginnings.

Eloquently written and highly emotional "If We Fall" is the continuing story of Josie Mays and Cole Danforth, two people destined to be together. From childhood friends growing up in the small town of Castille, Maine to teenagers falling hopelessly in love and planning a future, they were the perfect couple until one night changed the course of their lives forever. Tragedy struck the Mays family which tore Josie and Cole apart.

Utterly shattered from the circumstances surrounding that ill-fated evening, Cole inexplicably decided to leave Josie in hopes she can find the strength to heal and move beyond her grief. Lost and alone, Josie fled to California devastated and heartbroken. After ten long unhappy years, she is called home only to find the sweet boy she once loved is gone and in his place was a stranger ~ a cold, calculated and vengeful man determined to keep his distance from Josie.

Perception is not reality when it comes to Cole. At first, I disliked the bitter and ruthless man he became while mourning the beloved young boy that captured my heart. However, my feelings towards his character quickly changed when seeing his truth. A dark hero shrouded in mystery, he sacrificed all to protect the woman he so desperately loved. Unable to fight the magnetic attraction, all of Cole's pent-up love and passion for his Josie Bird exploded as fireworks between this couple deliciously ignited. I enjoyed every lust-filled intense moment of their reunion.

Josie's character touched my heart. Burdened with great sorrow, she suffered tremendously missing her family and Cole. Plagued with horrific nightmares, she sadly was unable to move on from the past. But through her pain, she found the strength to break through Cole's barriers in hopes of finding comfort and happiness. Tenacious yet compassionate, Josie was a force, and I absolutely adored her.

There's so much more of their story to explore as well as discovering the missing pieces of the puzzle that caused Cole's separation. With "If We Fall" Nina Lane once again sent my emotions into turmoil. I love how this author and her characters touch the very heart of me as Josie and Cole's journey will stay with me for a very long time. 5+++ stars that is a MUST READ!! I cannot wait for this saga's conclusion in "If We Fly."

OMG, I am literally devouring this duet! This love story is freaking intense as hell. It got dramatic, emotional and hearbreaking for Josie and Cole. So many things I did not expect to happen (that broke my heart in two) but what still remained is the connection and love between this amazing couple. I love Nina Lane's writing, I love how she develops her stories and her characters and these two are no exception. We even got a short appearance of Professor West! I got so excited! lol

Now, again, If We Fall is a roller coaster of emotions, with lots of ups and downs and a couple with lots of mixed feelings and crazy hot chemistry. Who is complaining? Not this girl! I really am loving Cole and Josie together. However, I am starting the next book right now, especially after that cliffhanger. My God, I need more!

Oh my gosh, I can’t breathe. I think my heart reached the quota of skipping so many beats the whole time I was reading this, and my mind is still a huge mess. This was so much more than I freaking thought it’d be! If the prequel, If We Leap, pinched at my heart, then this one squeezed and stomped on it like there’s no tomorrow. I couldn’t put this book down. There was no way. I just wanted to devour every page, every chapter, until I reached the end. And even then, all I wanted was more...

When I was eleven, I had very few defenses against Josie Mays. Now, at thirty-three, I have none. She demolished them with one look.

Cole and Josie’s story will melt you and break you and rip you to shreds a million times over. The more the pieces of the puzzle fell into place, the more it felt like they were pouring alcohol on my deeply wounded heart. Their love was written in the stars. They have the kind of chemistry and connection that’s all-encompassing and intense and just out of this world that there’s no denying how much they’re just meant to be.

These two were fated to be together—like their souls have always been tethered onto one another. But when life throws you a curveball, sometimes, it’s hard not to strikeout. And Cole and Josie’s relationship took a hit none of them expected, and never had the chance to recover from. Until ten years later when they were both brought back to where it all started. But no matter how strong their love was for one another, it didn’t seem like it was strong enough to keep them afloat. Now there’s a darkness looming over their relationship ever since that night. A crack that doesn’t seem like it could be fully mended. And that truly broke my heart in more ways than one.

He’s still the only man in the world who knows exactly how to kiss me.

The ending of this first book shouldn’t have been surprising to me, but the impact still felt like a massive sledgehammer to the head. It left my mind reeling, thinking about everything else that happened. The urge to reread the entire thing with a different perspective the second time around was so strong and real. Like I needed to experience it with both eyes wide open, so this time I’ll be able to pick up clues that I might’ve missed the first time.

If We Fall isn’t just a heart-wrenching tale of two people who got ripped apart by life’s unfortunate circumstances, but it’s also one that will leave your mind completely boggled, and you yearning for the next book because you just need all the answers so damn bad.

Nina Lane, I don’t know what I’m doing with my life, but I’m so damn glad this is the first book of yours (aside from the prequel) that I’ve read. You’ve undoubtedly rocked me to the core with Cole Danforth and Josie Mays—I can’t wait to know more and see what happens next with these two—and you’ve absolutely got a new fan in me.

Sweet and Suspenseful Love Story

4.5 🌟 stars

I always enjoy reading a well written second chance romance. I especially love one 💕 where there is a push- pull relationship. This Novella delivered on keeping me entertained and wanting more Cole and Josie.

Josie lost her parents and brother in a car accident 10 years prior. Her boyfriend. Cole left her shortly after the tragedy. Now that she's back in her hometown, working on a dedication mural near Coles business, they realize there are still spraks flying when they are together ❤️, although Cole once again pushes her away.

Will they have a second chance at Love? I recommend reading 📚 to find out.

Nina Lane is wonderfully skilled at writing broken souls. With If We Fall she provides a tear-jerking love story with an unforeseen turn.

Cole Danforth and Josie Mays had probably been in love since before they were born. They were each other’s many first and thought they’d be their last. But a tragic accident put them on different paths. A decade later a haunted by nightmares and phobias Josie has returned to her hometown, but the one she once loved has been replaced with a tyrant determined to drive her away. Their love is too strong to be overlooked but is it strong enough to survive?

As promised, when given the opportunity to read a Nina Lane story, I snatched it up. She pens a complex and detailed story knitting a rich narrative that encompasses scenery and art descriptions so vibrant they practically leap off the page. Emotions are put through the wringer while readers are left me hungry for more.

If We Fall is the first book of the What If? duet by Nina Lane. It is a raw, heartbreaking contemporary romance, told from both points of view.

Great start and even better to read that my favourite Professor Dean West was mentioned in the story. Straight onto book 2.

If We Fall picks up where from where If We Leap ended and boy let me just tell you....this is going to be such a great duet, it sucked me right in starting from page 1!

Josie had left her little town after what happened with her family and Cole and she needed a change and move on especially when Cole left her with no explanation or answers. Josie was beyond devastated.

Now, it's 10 years later and she returns to draw a mural in honor of her parents but Cole is adamant that he doesn't want Josie to draw that mural, and he doesn't want her back home at all. He tries to be this cold hearted beast, but deep down inside he knows he can't. As much as he wants to treat her bad, he just can't.

Josie has always loved Cole and even though he hurt her profusely, she doesn't hold a grudge against him. How could she if she could never get over him. As much as she's tried to move on, she just couldn't forget him. Now that she's back home for a month to paint that mural and help her sister, she ends up forming a bond with Cole again and they pick up right where they left off 10 years ago. The question now is, can they hold that bond? Can they have a happy ending, or are they destined to always have something or someone come between them??

My gosh, I was so freaking hyped when I finished If We Leap and jumped right into If We Fall and now I'm desperate for If We Fly because that ending, oh lord that ending! These cliffhangers are the death of me!!

This is my first series by this author and even though I've heard nothing but great things about her, I hadn't had the opportunity to read any of her other books, but now that I got a little taste of her beautiful writing, I'm going to try and get my hands on some of her other books.

This is a raw and emotional second-chance-romance that is dramatic, passionate and gorgeously romantic. It’s a quick read that packs a punch as we are taken on an emotional journey with two broken and damaged characters struggling with their demons yet beginning the path back to each other, and I loved it! I felt it all, and I struggled to put it down as I was sucked right into their journey.

I would definitely recommend reading the prequel novella If We Leap before making a start on this one, as it provides the background you need to really get invested in this couple and their story.

This book begins with the heartwrenching separation of childhood best friends-now soulmates. Josie and Cole were everything to each other until they were torn apart by tragedy, sending both of them down unexpected paths, very much alone.

“I loved you before we were even born.” He pressed his face to my hair. “I’d never leave you, not if I didn’t have to. You will always be my best friend, and wherever you are in the world, whatever happens, please believe all I ever want is for you to be safe and happy. I’ll do anything for you except stay.”

*sob*

It’s ten years after that heartbreaking scene and Josie has returned to her childhood home in a small coastal town in Maine to paint a mural commemorating the town. It’s the first time she’s been back since she left in devastating circumstances when she was 20, and she is not the woman she once was. Now plagued by fears, nightmares and phobias, she knows this trip will make her relive memories she would rather keep hidden, but it’s an opportunity for her to face her demons and find herself again, hopefully helping her move on once and for all.

And who should she run into when she gets into trouble on her first night in town, but Cole, the man who broke her heart. But he is no longer the sweet-hearted, gentle soul that she knew. Now cold, ruthless and seemingly uncaring, his cruelty is shocking.

“I’m not the Cole Danforth you used to know.”
Pain darkens her eyes. “And you have no idea how much that breaks my heart.”

Cole went through hell when he and Josie split, and his life ever since has been consumed with anger, vengeance and bitterness. The reappearance of Josie sends him reeling, and though he still loves her deeply, he does his best to keep her at a distance, even as she opens her heart to him.

“Stop looking at me like that.” His expression suddenly darkens.
“Like what?”
“Like you lost your best friend,” he snaps.
“I
did.” Unexpected tears sting my eyes. “Ten years ago.”

The loss and grief that these two are still so clearly suffering from is just devastating. I could feel the sadness and longing that they were feeling, and my heart broke for them both and all that they had lost. But as lost and confused as Josie is, and despite how determined Cole is to push her away, they are both powerless to resist the connection that always existed between them, and OMG the feels!

A groan escapes him. He fists a hand in my hair. “I need you.”
I never stopped needing you.

The passion and intensity between Cole and Josie is beautifully written, and whenever they are together, it feels so right! They belong together, but they are still so wrecked by the tragedy that tore them apart, and so much has happened in the years since to change who they once were. The love is still very much there and they both know it, but they have so much to work through. Can they find their way back to each other in a way that will last?

“You still there?” she asks after a brief silence.
“I’m here.”
I’ll always be here.

Woven throughout the story is a minor mystery storyline as hints are dropped about events in the past. All may not be as it seems, leading to a whole new set of questions, and then that ending leaves us with even more questions as we are left wondering about the truth of all that happened and how it will impact our two lovers.

I loved this book. It captivated me from start to finish, and I lost myself in all of the feels. I’m really looking forward seeing how the rest of Cole and Josie’s story plays out in the final to the duet.

4 stars.

GAH!! After that shocking cliffy in the prequel, I could not read If We Fall fast enough!! OMG!! I absolutely loveeeeed this story!! Set in the amazing town of Castille, off the coast of Maine, I could not help but rejoice at the The Secret Thief easter eggs throughout the story. Lane once again wrote a story filled with passion, love, loss and mystery. I could not devour this fast enough!!

Without giving away any spoilers, it is now ten years after that horrific tragedy at the end of When We Leap and Josie has returned to Castille to paint a mural for the town. But when she returns she sees that Cole Danforth is the not the same boy she loved and the same man who rejected wealth and power. He is now a moody, intensely hardened tycoon who had zero sympathy and mercy for the town who always hated him.

This book was astounding! I absolutely loved Cole!! Cue all the swoons. He was arrogant and broody and growly and alllll of the things I loved. The story was filled with secrets and shrouded in mystery and lies. I could not turn the pages fast enough. The raw emotions between Josie and Cole were almost tangible. You could feel their pain, longing and suffering and that ending was WTF CRAZY!!! I seriously can not wait for the second book!!! Bravo! 4.5 stars! ~Ratula

Ooh my, I still can’t wipe the grin off my face regardless of the ginormous cliffy which I might add, knocked me for six! Yeah, it’s totally Nina’s style but at the same time, totally unexpected since I thought she’d lead me to a place where there’d be a glimmer of hope. And although this is the first book in the What If Duet, I highly recommend reading the prequel first, If We Leap. It takes place a while back, giving readers a better understanding of her protagonists’ young lives and yes, the ending is just as gut-wrenching as this one. So, more advice...take a deep breath ‘cause you’ll probably want to stamp on your Kindle! Now then, If We Fall didn’t take off where I assumed it would. More reason for me to be intrigued, especially seeing that Cole had changed so much and Josie; well, I really don’t want to say too much because you have to read these guys’ story.

I fully admit that I love all Nina’s previous publications, but this one is simply beyond perfection. For the want of getting my hands on If We Fly coming 13th September, is something ridiculous! My patience, in this case, is literally zero and you’ll see why. Two lives. Two people from different backgrounds, who seemingly have most of the cards stacked against them for reasons to be divulged, start making plans. Their future looks bright, they have the blessing of Josie’s parents, and then everything came tumbling down in the split of a second. Argh, Cole and Josie made me cry. Okay, so I do get teary-eyed pretty easily, but what had happened wasn’t in the slightest bit fair. And few authors get me swearing like a trooper, but my language turned the air blue in more than one scenario. Yet Lane got me thinking about the consequences, how it had deeply affected them, how Cole coped with it and how Josie’s suffering altered her happy-go-lucky character. Trying to pick up the pieces, their lives go on. Neither are happy.

The author delved into Josie’s trauma in such a way that I couldn’t help but feel her pain. On the other hand; Cole, I didn’t know him. Gone was that enthusiastic lad I knew. Gone were his dreams. He is even more gorgeous, much older of course; however, his bitterness, his selfishness and need for vengeance vibrate off the pages. When I wished for the return of normalcy because I honestly believed it was possible, another hurdle appeared on the horizon.

This read that brought out all the feels was read in one-sitting, left me in an emotional mess, and I can’t wait to see to see if Josie and Cole get their happy ending. The way things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised if, in book two, I have a nervous attack so Nina, please don’t break my heart more than it already is! One of my fave romances of the year, trying my very hardest not to let on was a real effort, but I must for you readers. Bravo Lane!

If We Fall still not only has my emotions on overdrive, but after that ending, I absolutely have to have If We Fly now. I am begging you Ms. Lane, please put me out of my misery and tell me what is going to happen between Cole and Josie. Now if you want the full impact of their past, then please read If We Leap first, it just added to the emotional rollercoaster of their past and the pain the both feel.

Cole and Josie, even now while I am writing this review, still have my heart aching for them, wanting them to be able to heal both separately as well as together. My heart broke for Josie but it was devastated for Cole and all he has been through in his life. When people make their mind up about you, even when they are wrong, nothing will ever change that opinion in some and that is sad because you never know what someone has lived through during their life.

I could not put If We Fall down, I was one hundred percent into Cole and Josie’s story and I really need to know what will happen in If We Fly. If We Fall was a beautiful emotionally driven story that I can say without a doubt needs to be on your TBR lists for sure.

After the end of the prequel novella, I was wondering what happened to Cole and Josie and broke them apart. This book explains early on what happened. At first, that excuse seemed silly to me, but after the end of this book, I don't think so anymore. The cliffhanger even though was not a huge one, made me need the second book because I need answers.

The way I see it, this part of the duet aims to set the story for the grown up characters, letting us see how their lives are and give Josie and Cole a chance to go back on speaking terms before the second and "main" part begins. I believe that we will dive deeper into the past and what led both characters to become the people they are now. There is more to them than we know and especially in Cole. The duet seems to be one heck of a ride and I wouldn't want anyone to miss it. I know book two isn't out yet, buy judging from this one, I have a feeling that it will be great and a worthy purchase.
