From award-winning author J.M. a collection of four popular tales of Holmes’ resourceful adventurers, Jerry and Kat.
To be a Retriever means living a solitary life constantly on edge, and when you’re carrying a Discovery you’re in danger every minute until you deliver your find to the authorities on Earth.
Kat is a Retriever and has always worked alone, but she meets Jerry when he saves her life from a murderous assailant and from that moment on the two are inseparable.
Beginning with the story that first introduced the duo, this anthology follows the couple as they travel the galaxy matching wits with dangerous kidnappers, murderous smugglers, double-crossing partners and ruthless competitors.
Praised for their inventive plots and exciting episodes, these compelling stories mix action and suspense with playful banter between the two heroes as their blossoming romance develops.
If you like classic science fiction adventure then you'll love reading these stories and getting to know Jerry and Kat, two of the most likeable characters to emerge in many years.
Retrievers is the most entertaining set of sci-fi short stories I have ever read! Each the four stories was full of suspense, witty banter, clever double-crosses, and, especially in story 4 (Kat Scratch Fever), gut-busting hilarity! Each story ends with a surprising twist.
JM Holmes has a wonderful command of the English language with descriptions that evoke strong mental images. Here's an excerpt from story 1:
"He was a small man dressed in cheap, dark clothing. Tiny, beady little eyes blinked rapidly beneath a pasty, mottled forehead that quickly receded into a wet gloss of oily darkness, perhaps hair. A thin, greasy moustache clung limply to his upper lip, the last feature on a chinless face that simply merged into his neck."
Each story dives straight into the action without any preamble about each character's back story. This is hard for most authors to pull-off, but J.M. expertly blends-in all we need to know about the characters as the action unfolds.
The final story was my favorite. It seemed as though the author was channeling P.G. Wodehouse as the heroes, Kat and Jerry, travel to a planet where they attempt to infiltrate the stately home of a friend's imperious dowager aunt while on a clandestine mission. Mayhem ensues as things go horribly awry, turning into a farce of epic proportions!
Characters include Trevor the dog (not the butler), Trevor the butler (not the dog), Lady Althea Chudleigh (the aunt), a mansion crawling with cats, and a plethora of highly suspicious household staff. Lines include, "He had about him the air of a man who has read an advance copy of his life story and wants to have a harsh word with the author."
Each story, and the book itself, is short enough to be easily digested and would make a wonderful distraction during a long-haul flight or any other time when a wonderful distraction would be welcomed.
The four stories are more like an episode a in a madcap romp through space. Kat (a Retriever) and Jerry who joins her in the first episode seemingly bumble their way through a series of life-threatening adventures that ultimately lead to their collective success.
This is a comedy with a touch of slapstick and lots of current references that keep you grinning. The stories are good and they keep you invested in the outcome for Kat and Jerry. There is a touch of romance that helps keep Kat and Jerry together.
