As a former firefighter, Meg Malone lives by one rule: no dating firemen. The dangers of the job are too high, and she’s already lost too much. So, she returns home to Silver Bay, California, to take over her dad’s diner, hiding her scars and pretending she’s fine. Life is perfectly routine, predictable, and most of all, safe. Until the unpredictable happens in the form of a perfectly patient, definitely intriguing fireman.
He’s chasing a future…
Chet Endicott moved to Silver Bay to escape the expectations of his burdensome family name. Intrigued by the beautiful owner of Meg’s Diner, he can’t help but want to peel back the layers she protects herself with, but no one gets under Meg’s skin. Especially him, it seems.
When they are thrown together by their mutual passion for running, Chet sees a glimpse of the fire under all Meg’s ice, and he’s determined to fan those flames. But can Meg truly trust her heart? Or will this be the fire that consumes her?
I write books. I read almost all genres. I love sports, tea, books, and cookies. My faves are my Great Dane, my husband, & my 3 kids. (Not always in that order. :)
I'm an author with Tule Publishing. I am all about people and I love character driven stories. I love history and am a curious person who consistently wants to learn. I can't remember a time in my life where I wasn't writing or reading. I had journals as soon as I could write words. And I would get lost in books for hours as a kid. Stories and writing are how I process the world around me, what I see and experience as well as what I learn. I could talk books for hours and am happy to do so with anyone. I also love to sip tea and watch baseball.

Love at Meg’s Diner is sweet and heartwarming and just a delightful romance. The story brings readers back to silver Bay, home of several previous Lara van Hulzen romances, which means you feel at home immediately if you’ve read some of the other stories set in this location. Meg and Chet are a gorgeous couple, easy to love and to cheer for as they work for their own happy-ever-after. Their story embodiesChristian themes while addressing issues like PTSD. In this book, friendship, family and community are important, meaning you get a warm and embracing sense as you read. Just lovely!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. 3.5 stars. A pleasant departure from the wounded hero trope, focusing instead on a wounded heroine, and featuring an incredibly solid hero, “Love at Meg’s Dinner”, by Lara Van Hulzen (Tule Publishing), takes place in a charming small-town setting with a cast of engaging side characters. Meg and Chet’s romance is slow-moving and gradual, and I really liked its unhurried cadence, it felt necessary and was adequate because of the heroine’s issues. I also appreciated how the author wrote Meg’s healing process and her softening towards other people in general and Chet in particular. The fact her pain and ghosts have to do with loss and grief and not a broken heart because of a man is refreshing, too. Lara Van Hulzen portrays her female character as a guarded, lonely woman, a bit isolated even when surrounded by people, afraid of love and intimacy, and shows how she slowly begins to open up to others. Chet is a handsome, sensible and practical firefighter, with just a touch of shyness tempering his natural confidence and making him even more attractive. He seems to be the right man for Meg, his steady, even temperament and kindness appeasing any doubts or lingering insecurities she might dwell on. The fact is a bit internet phobic is quite interesting and appealing, too. There are light elements of faith throughout the stories and in some characters. I liked the side characters and enjoyed anticipating romance for some of them. And Dottie, Chet’s dog, is an endearing animal.
This is a sweet story about taking a chance at love. It’s about embracing those feelings when a certain person affects you in a way nobody else does, instead of running from those feelings. Turns out this new series is a spin-off of the author’s Silver Bay series, but I didn’t feel as though I was missing anything by not having read that one. The characters from that earlier series were easily integrated into this book without any confusion or overlong explanations needed.
Silver Bay is where Meg grew up. She moved away for some years but came back after a series of tragedies in her life. Now she runs the diner she inherited from her father and keeps mostly to herself. After the losses she’s been through in her life, she just doesn’t feel she can open up to anyone anymore, even her best friend. Chet is a newer resident of the town. He moved across the country and to a small town to get away from his family and expectations. Not that it’s a bad family, but he never felt he was free to be whom he wanted to be. In Silver Bay, he found his calling as a firefighter for the small town. And has been enamored with Meg who studiously avoids the man.
Circumstances lead Meg and Chet to spend time together daily, and Meg finally starts to face her demons and find a way to open up to a few people. There’s no denying this couple has a wonderful connection. I yearned for Meg to let Chet in and be open to having love in her life. Chet is excruciatingly patient and seems to understand Meg, even when she doesn’t say a word. It’s beautiful to see Meg learn to trust, not only Chet but others in her community as well.
Although Meg has a lot of hang-ups and fears, I love how the author handled the moments Meg felt she had been deceived. While there was an immediate response that wasn’t great, it fit Meg’s personality that she was able to take a step back and think things through rationally. She wasn’t afraid to tell Chet the ways she felt she was wronged. Chet, for his part, also took responsibility for the part he took in things. Not so much in how they became friends and more, but in his lack of communication at a crucial time. He didn’t negate her feelings and she didn’t try to hide her pain.
I really enjoyed this story and look forward to more stories from this small town.

Love at Meg's Diner the first in the new Endicotts of Silver Bay Series by Lara VanHulzen is an emotional read that is also a fun read too. The heroine, Meg Malone is a wounded scarred soul who now keeps her distant from others especially firefighters. She is a former firefighter herself until tragedy struck. Now she has come home to run her father’s diner. It is easy to understand how she feels. However one patient hero comes along to slowly woo her.
A totally sweet heartwarming story. It is difficult to read without falling a little for Chet Endicott. He is confident but not arrogant, bold but also shy and one great man for Meg Malone. This is their story where he works to win her trust and her heart, I loved it.
An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
What a great start to this new series. It is a sweet, heartwarming, emotional and fun read. This book takes place in a small town. Chet and Meg’s story was one of sadness but also of love. It is about finding that one person you just cannot be without even if it means going against what you thought you wanted. Their story was a beautiful read from start to finish and I am really looking forward to the next book in this series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
What drew me to this romance was Chet & Meg being firefighters ,this cover and storyline. I can relate to how dangerous fire fighting can be ,meaning my husband has been one for the last 15years, so I can see where Meg is coming from with a tragedy in her past job. I can't wait for book 2.
Love gets real. Chet and Meg push the boundaries of emotion. Love at Meg's Diner is not always beautiful. From heartbreaking to insightful, Van Hulzen makes you think. With a rawness that is beautiful, profound and haunting. These characters and their journey speaks to more than the heart.
Meg and Chet’s story is one that moves very slowly toward romance, it’s almost achingly sweet as Chet has to win Meg’s trust to make his way into her heart, I for one liked the slow pace. I hope these characters touch your heart so you will be rooting for them to find a HEA.
This first book in the series, takes us to Silver Bay where Meg Malone, a former firefighter and EMT, owns the local diner. She moved back home after not once but twice, she experienced tragedy in her life. She’s since closed herself not only to most people around her , but also to love. Especially, to falling for a firefighter. Chet Endicott moved to Silver Bay for a quieter life in a small town. He’s a firefighter and has eyes only for Meg. Though she avoids him even in her diner. When they are assigned to be running partners for a fundraiser, Chet’s patience and quiet demure, helps Meg open her heart and her life. But can she truly fall for a firefighter? Is she willing to take a risk ? This was a story about how losses can change a person’s life. It’s a story about finding that one person that will make one feel safe. Someone to trust. It’s also a story about second chances in life and love. Though at times heartbreaking, it is also heartwarming. I was entrusted a copy of this book by Tule Publishing. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
The story of Meg and Chet is a charming tale with a slow and gentle build to love. A wall made of armor protects the gentle heart of Meg. She has suffered the loss of too many loved ones. Chet is determined to poke through the armor and get to Meg’s heart. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I voluntarily read a advanced reader’s copy of this book for a honest opinion.
A fun start to a new series Love at Meg's Diner by Lara VanHulzen. I loved this book with the great storyline and dialogue. Even with Meg's secret issues from the past Chet keeps trying to get her attention. I can't wait to read the next book in the Endicotts of Silver Bay series.
Love at Meg's Diner by Lara Van Hulzen In this story we learn all about Meg and how she runs the diner for 3 meals a day to the residents. She has some old secrets and doesn't want them to come to light just yet. She stays away from firemen because of her past experiences. She has scars to proof it. Story also follows Firefighter Chet and he donates a lot of his time to the community with events where they are trying to raise money for a project in the small tonw. His family members are there Eva works in the bakery. They have family zoom meetings and there is talk of the father having heart issues, he needs to slow down so they must relocate from CT to Silver Bay. So much holiday things going on and the food is described in detail, oh YUM. They get paired up to race together and at times she's ok with it, some times not so much. She talks to a local minister and feels better. She starts to tell others of the tragedy. A fire breaks out during the event and he leaves but she is furious with him because of something she found out..... Can't wait to read more of this series. Great as a astandalone also. Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.
A very sweet story. There wasn't much depth, but sometimes a light-hearted story is just what the doctor ordered.
I was surprised at how quickly Meg got over her not-dating-firemen rule, but I loved how her friends supported her all the way through. She had a solid backstory. I guess I wish her growth was a little more developed.
I loved how patient Chet was. I don't feel like he had much growing to do through the story.
I also have a big question without an answer involving someone's parents. I get this is book 1 and it's a subplot in the book, but the book opened the question wide open and then leaves it. What happens??
There was very mild cussing, nothing extremely crude, and it's closed door.
I enjoyed the town feel of this story; the friendships, the interconnectedness, the 'having each other's back', and the caring in practical ways. Chet was an amazing character, caring, sensitive, patient, persistent. Meg, driven? The dog adds another level to the fun too. For me, Rachel was the best. Love her quiet, caring, unobtrusive way of "being there" and making the difference. It was lovely to see the light shine into the self-imposed darkness of grief and loss. A good message, we can all learn from?
Well written. Meg runs a diner but was previously a fireman. She had experienced a terrible fire and left that occupation. Dealing with her losses she did not trust anyone to understand and consequently was friendly to all, but would not let them know the fears she was mentally dealing with. The story has intuitive and loving people that help her come to deal with her issues. Do we all have some concerns about how others would view us if they knew everything about us and our past?
This was an enjoyable clean read. I liked that we deviated from the wounded hero to trope to our heroine having the tragic past. The characters seemed well developed, and I did like that there was some degree of counselling involved in dealing with the past traumas. The only weakness in the book IMO is that the main characters seemed to lack chemistry. Overall, a good book *I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
Meg has one rule will Chet change that rule? A heart warming sweet romance that I had a hard time putting down. Full of emotion, I do admit I has a few tears with Meg's secret, dealing with PTSD. Family and community are very important in this town of Silver Bay.
I loved returning this quaint little town. This is a start to a new series but I felt back at home.
Fear can dictate who you let into your life and who you leave out of your life make things out when she starts running with the fireman she didn't want to date requirement she once was a fire woman put that change when her brother died and her dad left her a diner now Chad has shown her how to love and trust again you will enjoy this book
The book was fantastic and i loved that Meg got her life together so she and chet would live a life of happiness and plenty of love . I hope others will read this book please 🙏
Meg story was one that keeps you turning pages . the suspension of what she was holding in. It's a must read book. Sweet and romantic life in small town. Looking forward to Eva's storyline. Lara Van Hulzen five stars well written!
Maybe 2.5 stars? 2.75 stars? Whatever, I'll bump it to 3 stars. This is a quick, sweet, sort of entertaining story. I did do some yawning through it, but I did finish it.
I enjoyed this read very much. It had the right amount of drama, suspense and of course romance. I just love these types of books and never tire of reading them. I think this book holds a place in my heart just because of its beautiful story. would recommend.
book was kind of a slow burn, but not an interesting slow burn i guess... it started out okay, but halfway through the execution seems to fall flat and i was kind of bored out... think i am the minority who didn't like it as much as other readers.
Meg has returned home to Silver Bay to run her father's diner after suffering a large tragedy. She likes to act like she is happy but deep inside she is pained. Chet is a fire fighter in Silver Bay. He frequents the diner and has a thing for Meg although she seems less than interested. When he sees her running while he is out for a run he comes up with a plan to get to know her. There is a fundraiser run and she is signed up. He decides to pull some strings and get them paired up. Now they have to spend time together running for a cause. The more time they spend together the more Meg starts to relax and open up. She has promised herself she would never get involved with a fire fighter. Can what she feels for Chet overcome her fears? Good read.
I received this arc of Love at Meg’s Diner in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book in Lara VanHulzen’s new series, The Endicott’s of Silver Bay. This was a quick and sweet story to read. I enjoyed going back to this sweet little town and meeting some more of the characters there. The first book is Meg Malone and Chet Endicott’s story. Meg is originally from Silver Bay but returns after her dad passes away and leaves her his diner. We learn that Meg has suffered many tragedies beginning when her mother left their family. Her older brother had left Silver Bay and got a job as a firefighter. Meg ended up joining him once she graduated, leaving their dad alone to run the diner. Sadly, Meg’s brother is killed while fighting a blaze. She is badly burned and spends time in the hospital before returning to Silver Bay. Then she loses her dad, leaving her all alone. She vows to never date a fireman.
Chet has moved away from his very wealthy family and has relocated to Silver Bay. He changed careers and became a fireman. His younger sister also moved there, leaving his twin brother and another sister back nearer to his parents. He is very interested in Meg and tries to talk with her in the diner but she is not receptive to him. He is unaware about her past and her feelings toward firemen. She also tends to keep to herself.
There is an upcoming town event, the Harvest Festival that has a charity run included. Both Meg and Chet are avid runners and he hopes to use that to get to know her better. Both Meg and Chet are signed up for the run. It will be how many miles they can run over 2 weeks. He learns that the event organizer is going to pair up the runners and asks her to put him with Meg. She agrees. Meg planned to do this alone as she approaches everything. So now she will be with Chet every day. Initially she is uncomfortable but as they continue, she starts to talk to him and gains confidence. Chet works to get Meg to let him get closer to her.
I really liked this story. I felt so much sympathy for all Meg has gone through and was rooting for Chet to break down her walls and get to know her better. Although this is a new series, we have met many of their friends and associates in the prior series. It was fun to return to Silver Bay and visit with old friends again. I liked Meg and Chet very much. Both were genuine with lots of good qualities. The story was very entertaining and I liked watching their relationship grow and flourish. We have been introduced to the other Endicott’s so it will be fun to read their stories. I look forward to book 2 in the series.
