A contemporary presentation of the 99 names of God according to the Sufi tradition in which it is said these are the divine attributes by which God manifests himself in the world and by which He completes the spiritual life of man. Compiled from original Arabic and Turkish texts this is the most extensive presentation available to readers in any Western language. Also included are the 201 Divine Names of the Prophet.
Sheikh Tosun Bayrak al-Jerrahi al-Halveti (Istanbul: 1926) is an author, translator and Sufi. He served as a government official in Ankara, Honorary Consul of Turkey in Morocco and is the Sheikh of the Jerrahi-Halveti Order in America.
He studied Biological Sciences at Robert College, Istanbul; Art, Architecture, and Art History in the Studios of Bernard Leger and Andre Lhote in Paris; Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley; and History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London. He received a Masters in Fine Arts from Rutgers University.
n 1970 Bayrak met Muzaffer Ozak Ashki al-Jerrahi who became his teacher. Bayrak is now a Sheikh of the Halveti-Jerrahi order residing near the Jerrahi Order of America mosque in Spring Valley, New York. He has been spiritual guide of the Jerrahi Order of the Americas, (the primary Western branch of the Halveti-Jerrahi Order of Dervishes) since 1977.
This is a thorough exploration of the 99 names of Allah, but from a fairly orthodox Muslim perspective, not mystical like other books I've like more. It comes across as a bit superstitious with advice on how to solve various problems in your life by reciting the names or various Arabic phrases a certain number of times, at certain times of day, or certain days of the week. Not for me.

Penyejuk Qolbu

An insufferable read. This was as tedious, if not more so, than assigned readings from school. This book was really short but even so, I felt like it should have been much shorter. This author is unbelievably repetitive, it's like the entire time he was just trying to say one thing and ended up stuttering for 200+ pages. It didn't help that he had a formula for writing. I might just be really biased because I disagree with him on theological bases. Seriously though, even if he is a Sufi, it's not cool to constantly include weak ahadith... and neglect referencing. I also have no idea where he got these superstitious applications of God's names. It made the rest of the book hard to take seriously. Gosh, I really need to start reading the backs of books.
This book is a great companion to William Chittick's "Sufi Path of Knowledge". The calligraphy work incorporating multiple names is stunning and meditative. Each interpretation of the names is insightful too. I definitely will be using this book as a continual reference.
I have had the fortuity of sitting in the Company of the author, and have benefited from the discussions.
One striking feature of the work is the understanding of the Attributes of God, and more Importantly, those Names, that are also Essences
A simple description of the 5 Categories of God's Own Unique Self, that are only particular to Him, are shared in the Introduction to the Work
Compared with Other Books on the same Subject, there is ample "Interpretation" that begs itself from the author. The section on how specific repeated recitation of His Names, can bring about cure (s)
