A charming romance about letting love in ... and finding happily ever after.
When reporter Tessa Kincaid sees a job listing for a mysterious three-month assignment with bonus pay, she applies immediately. It doesn’t matter what it is—she needs the money. The first night in her new town, she spends several thrilling hours dancing with a sexy cowboy she believes she'll never see again.
The next morning, she discovers that man is bull rider Cody Davis, whose comeback tour she’ll be covering for the next three months … and that he hates reporters.
The last thing Cody Davis needs is a distraction—especially one as hot (and as great of a kisser) as Tessa Kincaid. Strict focus is the only way he’ll win the championship this year, and he swore to himself he'd never let another reporter put him or his family in danger.
The two of them develop a tenuous professional relationship, their chemistry simmering just below the surface. As Cody finally begins to trust Tessa, though, she starts behaving strangely, disappearing at odd hours.
As the championship approaches, Cody must decide whether their relationship is an unwelcome distraction, or exactly what he needs to win the title. Tessa realizes she’s in danger of losing everything—including the man she’s falling in love with. Can they trust each other enough to find happily ever after?
Hilary Dartt loves great adventures, whether she’s writing, reading, or living them. The author of nine women’s fiction novels, Hilary lives in Arizona’s high desert with her husband, their three children, her Weimaraner and running partner, Leia, a failed barn cat, and a flock of chickens. She loves camping, exploring in the Jeep, and dance parties with her kids.
This book walked the fine line between having enough detail to interest a veteran reader while still explaining things enough for newbie western readers. The plot was good, the characters were realistic, and the story had a satisfactory ending. But, like any book, it can't be perfect. The heroine's parents annoyed me to no end, though they were an important plot drive for the book and good backstory for the heroine's personality. The constant will-they-won't-they of the side couples grated slightly after the twelfth mention. But overall it was a good read and a good first book in a western series.
In my opinion, this book has some excellent qualities and some poor ones. I found Tessa's relationship with her parents, and their level of responsibility, seriously dysfunctional. The lack of honest communication between her and Cody also bothered me.
On the other side, the backstage descriptions of the rodeo life were both vivid and fascinating. The characters were complex and interesting.
In other words, this is a flawed but interesting book.
I really enjoyed getting to know Tessa and that hot as f#@k bull rider. It was a feel-good, Cinderella-esk type of read. I look forward to reading more from this author
