About the author

Mark Timmony grew up on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. He's wanted to write for as long as he can remember and has several notebooks filled with illegible scribblings from childhood to prove it.

The desire to write led to work as a bookseller in Sydney’s oldest genre specialist bookshop. There he began to make headway on his dreams of becoming a writer. Working with books he was lucky enough to meet many Australian fantasy authors – Karen Miller, Tony Shillitoe and Jennifer Fallon, to name a few – and was invited to be a beta-reader for a number of them. This unique experience offered him a peek ‘behind the scenes’ of novel writing with professionals, and went a long way in giving him the hands-on experience needed in how to structure a story, develop characters and build fantastic worlds, as well as offering insights into the business side – publishing and retail – of writing.

These days you can still find him on the Northern Beaches, and when he's not writing the sequel to ‘The Blood of the Spear’, or reading, he's likely working at Australia’s local bookstore, or playing World of Warcraft.

So I had seen this author’s work come up multiple times on bookstagram. As he’s writing magical fantasy, with awesome covers, I was of course very interested. But with all the other books I was working through reading and reviewing I just hadn’t had the time yet. Then I saw the chance for a prequel novella (which I’m sure y’all know I love by now) and I had to have it. And come on? The cover of this one is easily the best!

So per the author’s note at the back of this prequel novella, this story takes place approximately 2000 years before the events of book one. After seeing that I’m rather impressed at the author’s ability to write such a poised, concise story that has action, heart, emotion, and I’m sure tons of context clues and references to the series. In such a short amount of time the author makes you care for the characters and world.

The world building is definitely a favorite of mine in this. Although at times it can be confusing, as I haven’t read any of the longer works yet, but I absolutely love that the author just goes full throttle on it. Names, places, events, and magic just happen at full speed. There is a very science-y, astral projection type magic in this (that definitely made me think Doctor Strange-esque things) and although I’m still not sure I 100% followed, I am definitely 100% all-in on it.

I can’t wait to have the chance to read more if this is what’s in store.

It was great coming back to this world! Starbinder is a gripping novella that grabs hold and doesn't let go. Getting the origins of one of the characters from Blood of the Spear was awesome. The prose is tighter and the pacing is fast. Mark Timmony is a rising star in fantasy. If you loved Eye of Eternity Book One this is a must-read.

Starbinder is a really loose prequel to The Blood on the Spear, being both parts of the Eye of Eternity series, by Mark Timmony. In this short novel, we are going to follow the story of Reiana, and the fate stars have set for her.

Despite being a short novel, Mark Timmony makes an authentic tour-de-force of his writing skills and worldbuilding, with so few pages, he creates an excellent story that gives brush strokes on how the world works and the intricacy of its magic. It's also important how good he avoided slowing the pace with info-dumping passages, getting this to the absolute minimum.

We are fastly thrown into the story, starting with an action scene which shows another of the strengths of Timmony's writing, as he's excellent at weaving action sequences. The plot advances really really fast, only slowing in the moments we are introduced to the mysticism of Reiana's grandmother, and when we are let known more about the Sundering and the Shaluay Starbinders. All the elements fusion perfectly to reach a climax which feels like the cherry on top of the novel.

In summary, Starbinder is a great demonstration of the talent that Mark Timmony has. A great novel, which serves either as an introduction to the world, or that can also be read after The Blood on the Spear; also, another pro, you can read it in one sit, so you can't make excuses about it, right?

It is the prequel novella to The Blood of The Spear book one in the The Eye of the Eternity series.

“We let those we love do their duty despite the risk.”

The events of this novella take place before the two thousand years of the events taking place in The Blood of The Spear. It is the story of a young girl named Reiana who is a wanderer as is her clan to which she belongs and how she will reach the Arleth'taur to be on the journey of becoming the Master Starbinder about whom the prophecy has been made to her grandmother, Resola.

The story has been told from many POV characters- Reiana, Resola, Jaril, Vendran Sabay. Obviously, the main character is Reiana.

“One spark in the darkness is all we need to light our way, to guide us, and to rekindle what we have lost.”

Through this novella, we get a peek into the world-building of the main book The Blood of The Spear. There are creatures such as Evay, Dasha'vay, Borewyrms, Voidsworn. The magic system is based on Stones and Stars as it is apparent from the title of the novella.

This is a very short novella, probably you can read it in less than two hours unless English is your third language and you are a slow reader like me. Because of being a novella, there isn't much space for character development. Still, you will love these characters, feel their emotions of love, hate, anger, loss and betrayal and will be forced to pick the main novel in the series.

Having learnt English as third language for two years, if the language of a book for me is easy to understand and read through, I find the writing style good.

A self-published fantasy novella and a loose prequel to The Blood of the Spear. We follow the story of a young girl, Reiana and the fate the stars have set out for her.

While I haven’t read The Blood of the Spear yet, I thoroughly enjoyed the depth and intricacy of the worldbuilding in Starbinder. Especially in a short novella, the world is well detailed, in a way that flows with the story and avoids info-dumping. I found myself pulled into the mystery surrounding the Sundering and the Shaluay Starbinders.

Mark’s writing easily pulled me into the story and had me wanting more. The characters we are introduced to were compelling and I felt invested early on. My only complaint is how quickly the novella went by, as I wanted more.

The magic and lore set out in the world were interesting and I look forward to reading The Blood of the Spear to see more exploration of it.

With magical beings, an interesting magic system, compelling characters, and reminiscent of a classic fantasy world. An excellent story I’d recommend for any fantasy reader out there.

The best novella I have read so far!

Mark has masterfully crafted a wonderful world, with creatures, different povs, magic system and a sick way to show what the powers can do.

This small start to An Eye of Eternity really shows how amazing this series will become. This is a prequel novella to The Blood of the Spear. And it was a great introduction, which will make you crave for the next book.

Starbinder is a prequel novella set around two thousand years prior to the events of The Blood of the Spear. It follows the path of the girl destined to be the woman to help guide the prophesied hero who will fight the Daemon Queen should she return. Reiana is a mistreated fifteen year old girl with a destiny of greatness. When the time is right, a betrayal close to her heart will set her down the path to become a Shaluay Starbinder whether she wants to or not.

This short novella is a beautifully written piece of fantasy that expands on the lore of The Eye of Eternity and provides some answers while adding more questions as well. It is rich in details and gives us a glimpse into the inner workings of the Shaluay, some of whom we will meet in The Blood of the Spear. It is action-packed and also heartbreaking, and it leaves you with enough of a glimpsed into the world of The Eye of Eternity to want to read more. This can definitely be read before first book, but I think it would be better to be read after even though it is a prequel.

Starbinder is a short prequel novella rich in lore and heart that will certainly leave you wanting more.

Starbinder is a loose prequel to The Blood of the Spear, taking place roughly 2000 years before the events in book 1 of The Eye of Eternity series. While this serves perfectly well as an entry point into the series, I personally liked that I had read The Blood of the Spear first, because there is a little ‘aha’ moment here that I wouldn’t have wanted to miss out on.

In this little novella, Timmony brilliantly shows off his writing and world building skills. Readers will immediately get a sense of the depth and intricacy of this world and its magic, without ever feeling overwhelmed.
The writing is just as immersive as in The Blood of the Spear and the action sequences were once again pulse-pounding.
And while we only get to spend a couple of chapters with these characters, I was immediately invested in their stories and really felt for them.

This is an excellent novella that will undoubtedly leave you hungering for more.
Highly recommend giving this a read. And you can just fly through this in one sitting, so no excuses ;)

I was over the moon when I was offered an arc for this one because I adored Blood of the Spear when I read it last year and I was excited to spend more time in this world. Starbinder did not disappoint, and I ended up reading it the same day I received it – and cursing the fact that work interrupted my reading.

‘But it is her story you want. Not mine. No, never mine.’

I always fall firmly on the side of loving prologues, but especially ones like Timmony has done here, which is not only from a different POV, but also first person. It immediately drew me into the book, and I was sold before I’d even finished the first page. An absolutely fantastic way of setting the scene, delivering some delicious worldbuilding and with that level of intrigue that has you immediately carrying on to find out what was happening. I also liked that the prologue not only set up the book but also the wider story and leaves us with the promise of more to come – and I just loved everything about this progue.

‘But books are not the only thing of which the Ardes Librantus are conservators. The world within Arleth’taur, the Cradle of the Stars, contains histories as well as prophecies, works of art as well as books and scrolls, nightmares as well as dreams.’

Starbinder once again demonstrates Timmony’s talent for worldbuilding and weaving that information into the story, but what I love about this novella is that the scope is entirely different. Whereas Blood of the Spear is very much epic fantasy, Starbinder straddles an interesting border between feeling both smaller and more personal in scale – focusing on a narrow location, and a small main cast – but also broader, in that we get to see much more of the universe, of the links between the stars. It was a fascinating combination, and Timmony does it beautifully here, and still captures that wonderful feeling that there is so much more to discover (something that I love to see and feel in books).

I should say that it is not necessary to have read Blood of the Spear before picking up Starbinder, and this novella is a wonderful entry point to this series and world, but if like me you have read the first book then there are some easter eggs to be found. But, staying with the worldbuilding, this novella is very clever in that it builds on the worldbuilding done in that first book for return readers, but also lays more foundations for the world and histories so both new readers and returning readers get to experience new aspects of the world.

Again, this story was very character driven and Timmony does a fantastic job of establishing these characters in a short space of time. One of the aspects I particularly liked was that it offered different viewpoints on the idea of prophecy and destiny from all sides of the prophecy in question, and even more that you could see how both those reactions and views were shaped by the relationships between the characters, but also how in turn that prophecy shaped the relationships. Reiana was an interesting character – and resonated very strongly with me for several reasons. She was also the character that caught me most by surprise and had me on the edge of my seat at one point. While Relosa was a fascinating example of what can happen when a prophecy is in play, and even though I did want to shout at her more than once, I do love what Timmony did with her character – and also that there was a cost to all her choices. Another aspect I loved with the characters was that there is a very different feel between the grounded people of the Wanders, the otherworldly Zurzic (and oh my goodness, I wanted more or him!) and the celestial, almost omnipresence of the Starbinders – it made for some fantastic character dynamics.

Prophecy when done well is one of my favourite things to read about, and it is something that Timmony has played with skillfully throughout the series, but perhaps because it was more concentrated here, it shone even more brightly. I just love how it played into so many layers of the characters, the plot and the worldbuilding – and honestly, I just want more of this!

I can’t recommend Starbinder, and the entire Eye of Eternity series highly enough. Timmony is an excellent writer, and this novella has me even more excited for where he will take this series, and I will certainly be grabbing a physical copy of this novella once it’s available. So, if you’ve already read BOTS then this is another fantastic addition to the series, or if you’re looking for a new epic fantasy series which shines across the board then is a great entry point to the Eye of Eternity.

I really enjoyed this novella, I think it did a phenomenal job of setting up for a greater series while also still not being info-dumpy. The characters were compelling in the short time that we got to know them. I'm eager to read on and highly recommend this as jumping off point before The Blood of the Spear.

Since I already read The Blood of the Spear and absolutely loved it, and I also plan to do a reread now that it has an audiobook, I figured I’d go ahead and read the prequel novella that is set 3000 years prior to the events that happen in TBotS. Starbinder has gotten some rave reviews from several of my peers, and they were right in loving this, but I shouldn’t be too shocked that I loved it too, since Mr. Timmony is an incredible author.

“It was foretold. Her destiny will be greater than her people’s.”

This is an incredible 90 page novella about destiny and what someone will go through, to see it fulfilled. Timmony continues to flex his world-building muscles by creating such a wondrous place in so little time, while also packing a punch with action as an attack ensues very quickly after meeting the characters. Despite the fact that the story moves very quickly, I was still instantly connected to a few characters that even in some emotional points it still pulled at my heart strings.

Mark is an incredible author, and if you haven’t given The Eye of Eternity a shot yet, I would highly recommend this as a starting point, before jumping into The Blood of the Spear, which is also going to knock your socks off! Do yourself a favor and add this to your 2024 TBR!

Two of my favorite aspects from The Blood of the Spear were the Ciralys mages and the Shaluay Starbinders. Both groups had an air of mystery surrounding them, with a deep history backing them. So, I was pleased to see that Mark decided to give us a glimpse into that long history for a particularly important Shaluay.

And when I say long history, I mean looong! What's incredible to me is that despite this novella taking place so far in the past of the main series, it still feels like there's an even longer history behind it. Mark's worldbuilding continues to astound.

The novella is a super quick read, clipping along with plenty of action while dropping some intriguing details about the magic of the Starbinders. Essentially, it's the story of a girl, Reiana, having the worst night of her life—and that's saying something, because her life has already been made a living hell by her grandmother to ensure the fulfilment of a prophecy. Mark did a great job making me feel bad for Reiana, and the emotional climax hit just right.

If you enjoyed The Blood of the Spear, you'll certainly enjoy this as well (and Mark is giving it away for free!) As short as it is, it's still packed to the brim with magic and monsters, betrayal and tragedy—a worthy entry to the Eye of Eternity series.

The Eye of Eternity series by Mark Timmony launched in 2021 with The Blood of the Spear, and I’ve had it on my TBR for quite some time. My TBR is long, so every book or series I add takes some time to worm its way onto the immediate queue. But anytime an author gives me a novella to try first to introduce me to the world, that series has a much better chance of jumping to the top of the pile. Starbinder by Mark Timmony is precisely this kind of title.

Set hundreds of years before the start The Blood of the Spear, this novella follows Reiana and her fated destiny after dark creatures attack her small village. Short, yet action-packed and emotionally full, Timmony introduces us to the origins of The Eye of Eternity’s world with a glimpse of the magic system, its peoples, and prose that will sit well with any high fantasy fan.

Timmony’s attention to character interaction and his ability to establish their histories within just a few lines is only overshadowed by his ability to completely immerse me in a world that feels well realized in such a short page count.

I had a blast with this story, and now that I’ve been introduced to the world, I’m eager to finally read the next installment. Check out Starbinder if you’re looking for something short and easy to try out a new, promising voice in epic fantasy.

Starbinder, Mark Timmony’s prequel novella to Blood of the Spear packs quite a bit into a novella. Having read Blood of the Spear, Starbinder was very enjoyable. The action starts right from the start and never lets up until the end. Mr. Timmony makes the most of this prequel in terms of fantasy, magic, and well-developed characters. Starbinder centers around the main protagonist, Reiana, who lives with her grandmother, other family members, and other families in a nomadic clan. Unbeknownst to her, she is destined to become the Queen of Stars, and has been, albeit cruelly by her grandmother, groomed her whole life to take on this role. Now is her time to go to the Starwell and assume what she has been trained for. While her grandmother is certainly not likeable, it is this trait that makes her a character that leaps off the pages.
Reiana, though only 15, is a strong protagonist. When her caravan is attacked by bandits, a creature called an Evay takes her young cousin. She doesn’t hesitate to run after him to rescue her cousin. Reiana is happy with her caravan family, though she fears her grandmother, and had a hard upbringing with her. She seems unnecessarily cruel to Reiana, but her motives unfold with the story. She must get to the Starwell at a certain time in order to fulfill her destiny. Despite how she grew up, Reiana is kind, loves her caravan family, and is not afraid to protect them. She was a marvelous character who we root for.
The Evay is a great fantasy character by Mr. Timmony. While they can take the form of a human, they are anything but human. The detail of this one’s true form was so creative and gruesome. He had mane of white hair, sharp teeth, red eyes, grey skin, and skulls adorning his clothes and skin. Creatures from the Void (a place for daemons), they are cruel, crafty, and possess dark magic. The reader clearly sees the evil they wreak.
Starbinder is wonderfully a told fantasy. As a prequel to Blood of the Spear, it is a must read. If you haven’t read Blood of the Spear, I highly recommend it.

This novella contains scenes with banter, as well as drama, betrayal, fighting, and self-sacrifice, all wrapped up in a world of high fantasy.
Who knew Mark could do banter! Oh yes, intelligent and/or grumpy but banter... a small part but so much fun. I enjoyed Starbinder very much and one of the reasons was the conversations between characters who with a few short words reveal their motivations and that more secrets await.
Starbinder is a prequel in the world of The Eye of Eternity and can be enjoyed without having read the first novel The Blood of the Spear.
I was a little surprised when I first read Starbinder. I think in a way as I was expecting it to be more familiar having read that first book. Yes it's set in the same world thousands of years before then, at the very foundation (literally) of the drama to follow, and the world is similar and different at the same time. It is a testament to Mark's skill that he is able to balance the two, creating a new world and characters that are so real while laying the groundwork for everything that follows.
Usual disclaimer that Mark is my friend and I will always be biased (and round up half a star to 5). And Mark I hate writing reviews so you know I love you.

This short story is so wonderfully written that by the end I was sad it had ended. With this novella you can only imagine what a grandiose world the author creates here and I can only say that I need more of it!

Starbinder was a perfect little taste of Mark Timmony's world accessible to both those who have and have not read Blood of the Spear.

For those who have read book one, we are treated to a deeper look at some of the more sci fantasy elements that build up the history of this world.

For those new to the scene, you are welcomed to an intricate origin story, full of promise and possibility, practically begging you to pick up Blood of the Spear right away.

I really loved so much about this book. My interest is peaked and I want more. Thankfully the first book, The Blood of the Spear awaits. There is a lot of groundwork laid in this novella to help the reader progress and navigate in this world. Starbinder is the magical, deftly written introduction to Timmony’s An Eye of Eternity series, in novella form; it’s an action-packed morsel of expert world-building that will surely have you coming back to read book one: The Blood of the Spear.

In this short but magnificent piece of writing, we meet Reiana, a girl ordinary who travels with her grandmother among others, who is from the fallen Nemisdrillion, and who is setting about enacting prophecy, and forcing Reiana into the woman the world needs her to be. Now, I don’t want to go too much into the plot or what makes this work such a page-turner, despite its size, but I’ll try to summarise what makes it so cool:

‘His armour was made of Kharidium, the lightest and strongest metal in the known world. Bandits couldn’t afford Xious’bisan forged steel.’

That sentence is an epic-fantasy fans dream (or mine), you’ve got rare, strange armour worn in a place it should not, by a mysterious figure our characters should not have met; at the same time, the sentence speaks to mysteries within the character and the very world itself. This is just one aspect of the novella and Timmony’s writing skill that made me immediately hungry for more and made this a one-sitting kind of book.

Along with the above, you have a prologue that speaks of a daemon trapped in the Face, The Elder Gods, Starbinders; an event called The Sundering, that stretches into the history still beyond this novella, the Void and many more intriguing terms you really just want to know more about. And what Timmony does here is he throws out all the epicness, but only answers a few of the questions. The rest of which I’m sure will be answered in the first book … so I’m just going to have to read that.

In summary, Timmony is a true talent, the way in which he’s woven this particular set of words together speaks to the long-time epic-fantasy fan, evokes nostalgia of the great epic fantasy series’ of old and paints those tropes into an entirely new epic picture of their own. And all this in a novella? I’m going to go ahead and tell you to read this and then read the next book … I’m about to start it very soon and I am happy to recommend it even just having read this book.

✨Starbinder is a brilliant little novella that shines.
It’s fast, atmospheric, and somehow manages to pack a full novel’s worth of heart into a much smaller space. From the very first chapter, Mark Timmony pulls you straight into a world that feels ancient, dangerous, and touched by the stars themselves. There’s a perfect balance between wonder and tension that keeps you turning pages without even realizing how quickly you’re reading.

The characters are the real highlight. They’re messy, emotional, and sometimes infuriating, but their choices come from fear, love, and desperation. The star-based magic system adds a luminous, magical layer to the story, giving it an extra sparkle and sense of wonder.

Starbinder was a short and sweet novella that was able to give you a glance into the world of the Eye of Eternity series. This novella does take place about 2,000 years before The Blood of the Spear which is book one. Mark was able to pack a fair bit of action and character moments to leave a lasting impact. All in all this one was just ok and I am still interested in checking out book one in this series.
