Second Chance Fire Station #1

The One Who Got Away

Rate this book
The relationship is fake. But the sparks are real.
Can these best friends rekindle a second chance at first love? Or will they both end up burned?

Right here at the Minden Fire Department is exactly where I belong. But when I became Captain Storm, apparently it meant I needed a wife. Or at least, that’s what my mom’s friends think.

When Krystal comes back to town, I don’t know what to think. She was my best friend in high school. The truth is I loved her–as much as any eighteen-year-old kid could have. I think she loved me, too.

But she left, anyway.

I really do understand why. She had dreams to chase in Hollywood. How could I deny her that?

She’s here now, though. For eight weeks. And she’s taking over the fire department charity auction while her mom recovers from her fall, which means working with me.

I know we’re just friends. She’s going back to LA after the auction, but maybe her presence could get my mom’s friends off my back for a minute. We’ll just let people assume there is more to our friendship… No harm, no foul. I really could use the break from my personal matchmakers’ attention.

And I won’t say no to a little extra time with Krystal. I’m probably torturing myself. Friends is all we’ll ever be. Even a fake relationship can’t change the fact that she was The One Who Got Away.

Visit Second Chance Fire Station and discover the small town stories of faith, friendships, and forever happy endings that Tara Grace Ericson is known for.

“God is showing me that dreams are better when they are shared with your best friend and partner.”

Krystal Daughty and Bryce Storm may have started in the same small town in Indiana 34 years ago, but their lives took very different trajectories when they turned eighteen. Krystal left to pursue her dreams in Hollywood and Bryce joined the Minden Rogers Fire Department. Fifteen years later, Krystal returns for two months to care for her mother who has just been in hospital, and is shocked at her reaction to seeing Bryce again.

This novel highlights redefining dreams, second chances, and the importance of family/friends over work.

I loved that Krystal realized she was attracted to Bryce when she saw his commitment to God and that the author reminded her readers that sometimes it’s necessary to chase new dreams or at least redefine the ones you’ve already made.

I’m excited for book two in this series.

When I want to smile and feel all the warm fuzzies, I pick up a Tara Grace Ericson book. She always writes incredible romance that's still squeaky clean and has a great faith message too!

I adored the relationship between Bryce and Krystal, their banter was so fun, just their whole second-chance, friends-to-lovers, fake-dating vibe was my favorite thing. Plus seeing a few familiar faces from Ericson's previous books in the background, the set-up for more stories at the station, it was just so much fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Five stars from me!

This book was such a happy sigh! I absolutely adored this story! This small town romance was brimming with humor, heart, and happy feels! I loved Bryce and Krystal together! Their friendship in the past was the perfect foundation for budding feelings and toss in a somewhat fake relationship and there were plenty of opportunities for sparks to fly! I absolutely loved the firemen and the feeling of family that was present when they interacted. It added something special to this story. I really enjoyed the natural faith thread woven into this book and felt like it was spot on in tone and delivery. Nothing felt forced or cheesy and it was super relatable. Krystal made me a bit nervous at first. I was thinking “girl, don’t make me dislike you”, but her character had such growth throughout this story and it absolutely had to play out the way that it did for that growth to take place. Bryce was the perfect balance of second chance and hopeless romantic. However, I appreciated when he had to speak his mind he did so with honesty and forthrightness. The conclusion of this book was a mixture of a few surprises setting up the next book and a lot of happy feels! No spoilers! But, I’m totally hooked on this series and I can’t wait for more in this series!

Wow finally found a good clean Christian romance. Bryce and Krystal are best friends until senior year when Bryce expresses his feelings for her he even had a ring that she never knew about because she chose to chase her dreams in LA of becoming an actor. She got. Few minor roles and one big faithmark movie. Her mother ends up breaking her back,so Krystal comes back to Miden to help her out. Her mom along with Bryce were working on the annual firefighter fundraiser but now that she was hurt, she got Krystal to help. People start thinking they are together and they fake it so that their mothers’ won’t keep trying to set them up. But the more they are together the stronger their bond gets. Sadly Krystal gets a call to be in 2 shows and she leaves. In comes Bryce’s sister Monica who is in love with Jake another firefighter. Monica keeps their relationship a secret. Krystal realizes how much she misses Bryce and she calls Monica to set up a visit where she can win Bryce at the auction. Sadly Monica gets in a wreck and looses her memory and don’t remember Jake. Will she and Jake find each other in the next book? And what is in the cards for Bryce and Krystal… I won’t spoil too many of the details but this one ended just like I wanted it to.

I am a little late to the party reading this one, but I have been hearing great things about it since it released. I wanted to get this one read before book two releases next week and I am glad I did. I really enjoyed this story and would highly recommend. Readers of Tara Grace Ericson will appreciate a trip back to the small town of Minden and updates on the Bloom Family we grew to love during their series. I really enjoyed the relationship between Bryce and Krystal and the camaraderie between Bryce and the other firefighters as well. I am always game for a friends to more story and this one threw a fake relationship in the mix as well. If you are in the mood for a clean romance complete with fun banter and plenty of chemistry, I would recommend you give this one a try.

Thank you to the author for a copy of this story. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Okay, sweet happy sigh. This story was so good, the characters fun (oh, Bryce you are such a great guy) with solid, biblical truth presented in such a relatable setting. I loved, LOVED the banter with the guys in the firehouse. So much fun, so many laugh out loud moments. I am already looking forward to Jake and Monica’s story.

Bryce has loved Krystal all of his life. Krystal had dreams that didn't include Bryce but her mom got hurt and she realized that the young man she left behind was the boy she loved along. This story was so good. It had a handsome firemen, beautiful ladies, and mostly it had God. These 2 people met when they were children and it could have been the author writing about me other than the glamourous stuff. God let me met my husband when I was 7 and we dated before he joined the Army. We eventually got back together like our bool couple and will be celebrating an anniversary soon. So this book tugged on all of heartstrings. I love God and love how both characters loved God and God brought them together. I received an ARC of this book and am writting this review for that purpose.

1. How did you feel about the setting?

Minden, Indiana exuded a warm and welcoming atmosphere, cultivating a true sense of community.

2. What do potential readers need to know most about the main character?

Captain Bryce Storm had been Krystal Daughtry’s best friend while they were in school until they went their separate ways. He had wanted to stay in Minden to be a firefighter while Krystal went to Hollywood.

3. Which supporting character caught your interest the most?

With an unwavering spirit and unbridled determination, Krystal Daughtry instantly captivated my attention.

4. What journey do(es) the main character(s) take?

Sharon Daughtry was eager to overcome her recent slip on ice, but with her recent fall, she could not organize the Spring Sparks Auction. With unwavering optimism, she entrusted her daughter Krystal Daughtry with the task, knowing that commitment would lead them to success. Despite their past heartbreak, Bryce and Krystal would work on organizing the auction together. This could be an opportunity as a chance for redemption and growth. And their combined efforts could create a memorable event and pave the way for a brighter future.

5. How is the writing style or quality of the writing?

The bond between Krystal and Bryce in the story is truly captivating. The author’s writing style is exceptional, making every moment shine with brilliance.

6. Is there humor in the book?

B.S.: Special favor to ask you. I’m going to need you to win me at the auction.

B.S.: I’ll front the money. But I’m begging you.

K.D.: Sure, no problem. What’s the big problem?

B.S.: Just an especially aggressive woman who thinks I’m her future son-in-law.

7. For whom would you recommend this book?

I highly recommend The One Who Got Away for enthusiasts of clean and wholesome Christian romance.

8. Why did you give it the star rating you did?

I confidently rate The One Who Got Away with a perfect 5-star review. It is incredibly easy to read and keeps the reader engaged from start to finish. Author Tara Ericson has solidified her place as a must-follow author in my book.

9. Is the title memorable and/or emotion-grabbing?

Certainly! In this contemporary romance, the title itself tantalizes readers, inviting them to unravel the mystery behind the characters who got away. Their curiosity will be piqued as they delve into a story brimming with romance, intrigue, and the pursuit of what could have been.

Oh, this was so cute! I always adore Tara Grae Ericson’s books and this one was just a great start to a new series! The One Who Got Away is the first book in Tara Grace Ericson’s new series, Second Chance Fire Station.
Krystal had left home right after college to follow her dreams. But when her mom gets hurt, she finds herself back in town and paired off with the guy she left to help plan a fundraiser. Captain Bryce Storm had been pinning after Krystal ever since she left.
Krystal was a sweet character who was just trying to follow God’s leadings. She had left home to follow her dreams but now that she was back, she didn’t know what to do. Krystal had a lot to work through, but I love how she still tried to look to God for guidance. She truly cared for Bryce but she didn’t want to regret her life decisions.
Bryce was a sweetheart, he really cared for his community. I loved getting to read from his perspective. He worked hard to be a good captain. I liked how he never pushed Krystal or really got bad at her for her choices, he was understanding. He did not always understand but he still wanted what was best for her.
I really liked the story and the characters. The romance was sweet and it did not feel rushed. I was able to connect with the characters and I wanted to see how they would end up together. I liked that they had history but how it was not full of angst. I also love how Ericson is able to weave faith so seamlessly into the story. The characters learned to trust God even when life felt crazy. These are the kind of Christian books that I love.
The One Who Got Away was a wonderful book and I am so excited to read the rest of the books in this series. I would definitely recommend this book! The One Who Got Away is a clean Chrisitan second chance romance.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.

This is a sweet, clean and heartwarming second chance at love romance. Bryce is everything one could want in a romantic hero. Brave, steadfast, loyal to his family and friends, dedicated to his job and a man of faith. As a Captain in the fire department, Bryce is dedicated to helping his community even when it comes to organizing and then participating in the upcoming charity auction. When circumstances or God’s will brings his first love (okay, his only love) back to town to look after her injured mother, Bryce is not surprised to learn that Krystal will be taking her mother’s place as co-organizer for the upcoming auction. He tells himself that he is over her, that he can handle seeing her often until the auction takes place, but he knows deep down that he still loves Krystal. Krystal tells herself that her fierce attraction to Bryce is normal, that there are no deeper feelings lingering, and that they are just acting like they are a couple in order to ward off friends and family who keep trying to set them up on dates with other people. The rapport they always had is still present, and so are the feelings that he was too afraid to admit to her until they graduated, and that she refused to acknowledge, even to herself, for fear that she would give up her dreams to stay with him. They have been given a second chance at love, but will they finally fight for a happily ever after or will there only be more heartbreak?

Love isn’t always easy. Sometimes it takes courage to fight for it and compromise or sacrifice to keep it. Above all it requires open communication and trust. Bryce and Krystal’s story illustrates all of these truths. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This was such a fun story to read. If you enjoy Hallmark movies you're going to enjoy this story!

First, I love small town stories, and I especially like going back to towns I've grown fond of. The little town of Minden has worked its way into my heart. I already know I'm going to look forward to getting to know the people connected with the fire station.

Bryce is the one who stayed behind. Minden is where he's rooted and you can feel his love for the town. He's also eligible and the mamas of the town know it. That's a pretty amusing thread in this story.

Too bad Krystal, the one who got away, comes back to town to take care of her mom after a fall. I could imagine her wanting to get out of the little town and pursue her dreams. I really liked her and her struggle of wanting to pursue her dreams while feeling the pull of the small town living.

The overall story was very sweet and was a quick read. Watching both Bryce and Krystal "pretend" that they're dating so their families won't set them up on dates is both helpful and not helpful because of the feelings they have for each other that seem to be watered with their time together. There's a plan that's bound to backfire.

Of course, I can't neglect the faith element that is throughout the story. It's subtle (as in not shoved in the reader's face), and flows nicely with the story and the characters. Both of the MCs have to look to the Lord for guidance and what he has for each of them.

I'm already champing at the bit for Jake and Monica's story! That will be an interesting one!

*I received the ARC for review. This is my personal opinion.

The One Who Got Away is the first book in the Second Chance Fire Station by Tara Grace Ericson. Bryce Storm and Krystal Daughtry were best friends in high school but Bryce had deeper feelings and he thought she felt the same. However, she left their small town of Minden to pursue her dreams in Hollywood. He stayed in town, joined the local fire department and rose to the rank of Captain. After years away, Krystal comes back to town for a few weeks and is recruited to help him with the department’s auction fundraiser. In order to curb the town’s matchmaking schemes, Bryce proposes a fake relationship, which Krystal agrees to. However, the sparks become all too real but she’s leaving again...right?. Can they take this chance for a first love? Or will Krystal forever be the one who got away?
I have been looking forward to this story for a long time. I love firefighter stories. I love second chance romances. So I eagerly opened this story. It is a clean romance. I liked the character of Bryce right away and his faith. However, once Krystal comes back to town, there’s no real conflict or drama. However, I kept going and I am so glad I did. I could not put it down. I truly love the faith aspect and the internal struggles of Bryce and Krystal as they struggle with their torn desires between fulfilling their dreams and the new dream of being together. Overall, I enjoyed the story . I also enjoyed that the story leads into the next book in the series, so I am looking forward to the rest of the series. I highly, highly recommend The One Who Got Away.

And I won’t say no to a little extra time with Krystal. I’m probably torturing myself. Friends is all we’ll ever be. Even a fake relationship can’t change the fact that she was The One Who Got Away. this was a quick read for me that had me staying up too late to finish. I received an advanced copy of the book and read it awhile ago but forgot to leave an review when I finished it.

The One Who Got Away is a sweet second chance story of an actress and firefighter that had been best of friends since they were small. They lived just down the street from each other and Bryce had been in love with Krystal and even bought her an engagement ring after graduation but she left for California to become an actress before he could give it to her. 15 years later she had to come home to take care of her mother who had fallen and couldn't live alone. She had 1 movie that her name was in the credits. She had a internet business she ran to help clients to help pay her bills when only walk on parts or small parts were all she could get.

When she came home she had no movies or tv show offers. She reconnected with her best friend Bryce because he was suppose to work with her mother to get the firefighter auction planned but since her mother was injured she gave it to Krystal. When Krystal seen Bryce the first time he had changed so much from the teenager that he was to a really handsome man and had made it to captain in the fire department. He was still single because he thought Krystal was the only woman he could love. Since Krystal was back home her mother started getting her dates like Bryce had dealt with by his mother and sister for the last 15 years. They decided to fake date but nothing ever comes out of that good or can it?

A sweet story to read. I was given an ARC copy of the book for my honest review.

The One Who Got Away by Tara Grace Ericson is a charming, small-town contemporary romance set in the familiar town of Minden, Indiana. This story is written in first person, but still shifts between the two point of views of male and female lead. This didn’t bother me at all! I thought it helped add to their personalities, which I loved!
This entire story was just plain fun. The charm of a small-town–with all the gossip and matchmaking included–combined with the second chance romance was a hit with me. I loved the witty banter between Bryce and Krystal and their instant familiarity as they were forced to reunite after many years apart. One thing I loved about their story in particular was that each of them supported the other in their dreams. Sigh. They are too cute together. And their story would definitely make a good movie for Krystal’s Faithmark channel. :)
Like all of Tara’s books, there is always a faith element woven into the story. I loved seeing characters turn to God in disappointing moments and seeking His will for their lives. Such inclusion of faith is why I will always read Tara’s books!
Overall, I loved this story. And I can’t wait to read Jake and Monica’s story next! If you are looking for a fun weekend read, then grab a copy of The One Who Got Away!

I really enjoyed this book. The first thing that stood out to me was the Bible verse on the first page which goes with the theme of the story. This wasn't my first Christian Romance novel, but it was my first Contemporary Christian Romance novel and it was so refreshing. There were zero sexual scenes or innuendos, but the chemistry between Krystal and Bryce was so heavy that it was definitely enough. There were also no cuss words used and I didn't even notice until now, which means that cussing really isn't necessary to prove a point or show anger in a story line. This would be a good book to give a teen and you wouldn't have to worry about bad influences being pushed on them. I also enjoyed how the story supported Krystal's career choices, but it also supported her mother's choice to set aside her career aspirations to happily become a wife and mother. The side characters were also a winning point for me, because normally the side characters are kind of annoying and I really don't care about them; in this story I really liked them and cared about their welfare. Overall, this book was so wonderful and refreshing. I was pleasantly surprised and will be recommending it to people who want a nice clean romance to enjoy.

I can't remember when was the last time I read a firefighter story, but The One That Got Away delivered everything I was hoping for: a sweet romance between Bryce and Krystal (though they certainly fought it, and it's all pretend, right?), seeing firefighters in action (and be left humbled and grateful for their service), the camaraderie and banter between the crew of MRFD, and of course, the learning to seek God's will and guidance for the future and the plans one may have. I must admit I'm not a fan whenever matchmakers pop up, but I enjoyed how it worked in this story to bring the two MCs (and their fake relationship plan) together. It was also great getting to enjoy small-town life (with its pros and cons), and while I haven't read the Bloom Sisters series, it didn't take away from my understanding and enjoyment of this book (though it did make me want to go, pick it up, and work my way through them).

Overall, a great Christian Contemporary Romance, perfect for fans of the genre, the author, and/or the firefighter, and fake relationship tropes. I seriously can't wait for Monica and Jake's story! ~ 5 stars

Are you ready for a whole series of sweet contemporary romance featuring...*drumroll* .....FIREFIGHTERS?
If you aren't interested move along, but if you are you will definitely want to check out this series by Tara Grace Ericson!
This story is filled with small town charm and a story of second chances. I always enjoy a fake relationship that turns real and this one definitely gives the feels.
I loved the hero! He was so sweet and steadfast, just a great guy.
I didn't really understand the heroione's drive for Hollywood but it didn't interfere with my enjoyment.
As the greedy person I am I did wish for a little more on page chemistry between the two characters, especially since this is a second chance romance.
This book has that sweet Hallmark'ish feel with a bonus of a faith element woven into the character's journey.
A fun read and a great set up for book 2 that I am here for!
I recieved a complementary copy of this book from the author. All opinions are honest and completely my own.

Bryce hoped to marry his best friend, Krystal, back around graduation. Then she announced she was moving to LA with dreams of Hollywood - and left. Now, years later, she returns for a couple of months to care for her mum after an injury, and reconnects with Bryce. But the lure of Hollywood is still strong. Since they've been given a second chance, can they each work out what is most important in life? Will Krystal open her eyes to the possibility of new dreams?

This was an enjoyable second chance romance, clean and well written. I didn't feel like I fully understood Krystal, but I was pleased to see her finally learn to talk to others about the important things of life rather than just making decisions herself. A refreshing, relatively light read, good for a break from 'real life'. Looking forward to the next book - the 'intro' in the epilogue sounds intriguing.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

I highly recommend this book for those who enjoy clean Christian romance. Bryce has loved Krystal since high school but they never dated. When Bryce finally got up the nerve to let Krystal know how he felt and kissed her, she told him she was going to follow her dream to become an actress and move to Los Angeles. Fifteen years later, Krystal returns to care for her Mother who broke her hip. Since her Mom was in charge of the yearly auction to raise money for the fire department where Bryce is a Captain, she asks Krystal to take over knowing she would be working on the project with Bryce who is still single. I loved the way Krystal's Mom and Bryce's sister were always playing matchmakers for Krystal and Bryce, which led them to fake dating to stop the matchmaking attempts. The characters are all great and there are times of laughter and crying but putting God first brings a HEA and a very satisfying read. I received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.

I really liked returning to the small town of Minden for this story about Bryce and Krystal.. Bryce was such a sweet, romantic character with a great sense of humor.  He loved deeply even when it would break his heart and Krystal broke his heart back in high school when they were best friends.
I liked that Krystal decided to follow her dreams at age eighteen and move to LA to become an actress.  It was fun watching them reconnect fifteen years later and how they decided to pretend they were dating so their families would quit trying to fix them up on blind dates.  It's a good thing Bryce was a firefighter because there were a lot of sparks igniting and embers burning between the two characters.
I really enjoyed the story, the characters, and the town.  I am also excited that there is another book in the series.  I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

Bryce and Krystal had been best friends all through school. When she turned 18, Krystal planned to leave home to become an actress. Bryce wanted her to know how much he loved her and wanted her to stay. When he told her how he felt, he found she didn't feel the same way and his heart was broken. Now, it is close to 20 years later and Krystal is back to help her mom recover from an injury and Bryce still hasn't been able to move on. Truthfully, neither has Krystal. She had no idea how deep Bryce's feelings for her ran, though, until she began to feel the sparks in their "fake" relationship. Was it worth a second chance or would there just be more heartbreak to recover from?

This was a sweet, Christian inspired romance about a love that runs deep and everlasting if you are willing to take a chance on what God wants for your life. And, there is a happy ending.

I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.

I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Krystal and Bryce were best friends in high school. They did everything together! Bryce wanted their relationship to be more at that time, but Krystal had dreams of moving to LA and becoming an actress, while Bryce's goal was to stay in the same town and become a firefighter.
Fast forward 15 years and they are back in the same town together when Krystal's mom gets hurt and needs assistance for a couple of months. In true small town meddling fashion, Krystal's mom pushes Krystal to help Bryce with the fire station's benefit auction so they can spend lots of time together. WIll the old flames be rekindled knowing that Krystal has every intention of going back to LA? You'll just have to read the book to find out!

A Second Chance in Minden, Indiana

Fire Captain Bryce Storm is such a steadfast, salt-of-the-earth guy; Krystal Daughtry is finally getting some breaks after years of struggling to achieve her dream. I was rooting for them to get their Second Chance—but how can they make it work? It was so heartwarming to see them grow in faith, seek God’s will, and work through the issues keeping them apart.

This was my first visit to Minden, Indiana, but I quickly fell in love with this charming town and the people who live here. Now I want to check out the Minden books previously written by Tara Grace Ericson, and I’m definitely looking forward to more in the Second Chance Fire Station series!

This small town romance gave a fun spin to the second chance romance trope. Bryce was brokenhearted when the girl he loved left for Hollywood to pursue her dream right after high school. Eventually he was able to move forward but when Krystal came back for several weeks to care for her mom after an accident, he remembered how much he enjoyed spending time with her. Krystal was finally beginning to have some success in her acting career and she worried that getting involved with Bryce would only hold her back since they wanted different things. Can love find a way? Good read when you want a light-hearted happily-ever-after story. Rating 4.5 I received an advance review copy from the author and this voluntary review contains my honest opinions.
