A beloved aristocrat accused of theft. A beautiful bride in deadly danger. And unless Holmes and Lucy can stop a killer, a grand historical gala will be forever haunted by a grim and ghastly murder.
London, 1900—Sherlock, Lucy, and the Baker Street team are called to investigate Sir Galahad Trent, a popular local aristocrat whose castle restoration should be the pride of the local community. But is Galahad the benevolent medieval enthusiast that he seems?
Detectives from the Pinkerton's agency suspect he has stolen two million dollars in bonds from the United States Treasury. His wife, Lady Carlotta, a 'dollar duchess' whose dowry funds are running low after a year of Galahad's profligate spending, may face impending peril. Her American father claims that Galahad is seeking yet another million-dollar dowry and is about to kill Lady Carlotta.
A gala dedication ceremony promises financial support for a rebuilt castle, as well as bright pageantry and festive merrymaking. But then the loan to fund the castle restoration project is placed in jeopardy when Galahad's banker is found dead, stabbed with a medieval dagger. Galahad insists on going forward. But then another murder is discovered, Lady Carlotta's father goes missing, and Flynn and Becky are set upon by an unknown assailant, and imprisoned.
Can the Baker Street team thwart a murderer's sinister scheme? Or will the daring detectives be defeated by the devilish cunning of a dastardly evildoer?
Anna Elliott is an author of historical fiction and fantasy. She enjoys stories about strong women, and loves exploring the multitude of ways women can find their unique strengths. She was delighted to lend a hand with the Sherlock & Lucy series, and thrilled to continue a new spin-off series featuring Becky and Flynn. Her first series, the Twilight of Avalon trilogy, is a retelling of the Trystan & Isolde legend. She wrote her second series, The Pride & Prejudice Chronicles , chiefly to satisfy her own curiosity about what might have happened to Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy, and all the other wonderful cast of characters after the official end of Jane Austen’s classic work.
I really enjoyed this series continuing the adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and Sherlock's daughter, Lucy James.
The only drawback is that only the first seven books are full-length and the rest are short stories. Though they are good, they are not long enough to fully develop the story line and many end rather abruptly, reminding me of soap opera endings designed to draw you back for the next episode...
Caution: some potential spoilers (not too revealing, I hope) in this review.
This latest in the Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James series strikes me as very much in the same vein as we are familiar with in this series, with Lucy showing herself to be a worthy scion of Holmes, and her sister-in-law Becky also playing a plucky role, as she has increasingly been doing as the series progresses. At the same time, we see a new character emerging that the epilogue reveals we are going to see more of. In fact, we get the POV of Violet as early as chapter 2, while Lucy's POV does not appear until chapter 7, though becoming more frequent in subsequent chapters.
In this story, Sherlock is persuaded to help out with a case brought forward by the Pinkerton detective Agency from the US. There are, therefore, some allusions to his earlier contact with the Pinkertons in the "canon."
The development of the case is satisfying, with some uncertainty until the very end as to what 'revelations' are red herrings and which are real clues. I continue to recommend this series, as well; as the spinoff series of Becky and Flynn, very highly.
July 1900. Preston of the Pinkerton agency wants Holmes to discover if Roderick, Earl of Tottenham aka Sir Galahad Trent is using stolen U.S. Treasury bonds to fund the restoration of his castle. Trents's father-in-law also approaches Holmes as he is convinced that Trent is about to kill his daughter so that he can marry another million dollar dowry. But soon Galahad's banker is discovered dead. But what could be the motive for this quiet and hard working man. Another well-written and entertaining historical mystery. A good addition to this series with its cast of interesting and very likeable characters. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James Mysteries always make it to the top of my TBR when the next in the series becomes available. The books are always an enjoyable diversion, and GALAHAD'S CASTLE is no exception.
Mystery surrounds Sir Galahad Trent who is restoring his crumbling castle to a glory worthy of Camelot. Clues abound as Sherlock Holmes and his merry band investigate murder, theft, and dastardly mayhem. There are the three usual teams of investigators… Holmes and Watson, Lucy James and Sergeant Jack Kelly, and Flynn and Becky. In the mix are a Pinkerton man and a mysterious woman also pursuing justice.
You won't know until the very end just who-done-what-and-why as Sherlock unravels the seemingly disparate clues garnered by the various members of the team. The revelation fits well with the canon in bringing the case to its solution. The Epilogue does end with something of a cliffhanger. Even if cliffhangers aren't your cup of tea, it does mean there are more books to come in the series. I, for one, will keep reading the Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James mysteries as long as Anna Elliott and Charles Veley keep writing them.
A different version of favorite literary character.
This is the latest offering from the Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James Mystery book series. My mother read to me Sir Arthur's Sherlock when I was a child. We also watched the film version starring Basil Rathbone, who, I still consider the quintessential portrayor of Sherlock Holmes. Over the decades of my 70 years there have been numerous screen and literary adaptations of the original character with additions of wife, sister, and children . I appreciate the authors keeping alive one of my favorite literary characters. I have read the entire series and look forward to the next installment. Surprisingly to me my favourite characters are Becky and Flynn, a nod perhaps to Mark Twain.
This is the first book I have read in the series so it took a bit getting used to who everybody was. Each chapter is outlined by different characters telling the story.
The writing is easy to understand flowing smoothly between chapters. I really enjoyed the different scenes throughout the book. I got a feeling of the time period with the various descriptions so it was fun to think about being there with the Baker Street & Pinkerton teams, Sherlock Holmes and his daughter Lucy. Something is going on in each chapter, holding my interest. Well done!
I received an advance review copy and the review that I have posted is completely my own opinion.
Another will written British 🏰 family relationship murder mystery adventure thriller short story by Anna Elliott and Charles Veley A Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James Mystery Series book 31. Sherlock, Lucy, and Watson are conducting investigations into bearer bonds that were stolen. Becky and Flynn are doing their investigation and getting into their own troubles. They solve the problem of murder but the bearer bonds are still missing. Continued in the next novel. I would recommend this series and authors to readers of mysteries and fans of Sherlock Holmes. Enjoy the adventure of reading or listening. 2022 👑👒😀
An English nobleman who wishes to restore Arthurian values is entangled in a web of murder, theft and lies. Is Galahad a villain or victim? Sherlock and Watson, Lucy and Jack, Becky and Flynn are on the case, with Lestrade, a Pinkerton detective and a lady detective named Violet also involved. This intriguing mystery offers delightful characters, as well as taut plotting with many twists and turns. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Galahad once more takes to saddle as an eccentric lord opens his castle to tours. But to fund it is the problem but creates the need for the involvement of Sherlock and his eclectic group of associates to find if murder is in the mix. Th series continues as these go forward and remains interesting and enjoyable. Easily recommended.
Supposedly the last in their series, but it appears another cliffhanger...This is a great series of problems with SH, his daughter Lucy, her spouse Jack, Flynn- one of SH's young helpers, and the indescribable precocious, Becky. I really liked many of the series, but some of the stories seem to ovwerlap in plots, etc.
What a delightful mystery full of numerous twists populated by exciting characters! I can’t wait for the next one! I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
Solid tale though I did peg the villain. I appreciated more Becky and Flynn and the new characters were intriguing. I'll wait impatiently for the next book.
Lady Trent falls off the tower to her death - suicide or accident? Either way, nothing was suspicious enough for the local doctor or police to investigate. But when Mr. Brown's daughter is the next Lady Trent, and Sir Roderick Trent is hard up enough to ask the bank for a loan, Mr. Brown is not too happy to hear that the earl had already squandered the million dollar dowry that his daughter brought to the marriage, especially as he had also gone through the dowry from the first Lady Trent.
I thoroughly enjoy the Lucy James and Sherlock Holmes mysteries. They are great fun, exciting, intriguing and challenging. Becky and Flynn are brilliant too, as always. Looking forward to the next exciting episode!!
