Fate can never be outrun, much less your father’s killer.

Born an illegitimate son, with no knowledge of his father, Fahd spent his entire life hiding and on the run. Until the day he is brought back to his birth village and the truth about his paternity comes to light.

Fahd is forced to decide—keep living an outcast’s life, or take a chance and destroy the evidence held against him. An easy choice for a young and determined demon, when more than his life is on the line.

A dangerous heist at a guarded mansion is only the first step in Fahd’s upcoming quest. He must overcome not only vicious demons, but also his own Darkness, which waits to seize control. The daring gamble shall tip the balance between Fahd’s survival and certain death.

Deathfall Wraith is the story of a younger Fahd, for those that have read any of the ‘The Light of Darkness’ series, you will know that Fahd is the Fore-Father of Samael, the Demon Prime and Patriarch of the Panther Clan.
In this story, we are introduced to the younger Fahd, who is on the run with his mother, Mara, as they are being chased by the current Prime Patriarch of the Leopard Clan, and leader of the Demon Clans, who hates Panthers.
I don’t want to give too much away, as even though this is a short Novella, there is quite a bit of complex back story that gives us so intriguing history of not just Fahd’s story, and as a result, Samael’s history as well, but there is this compelling and in-depth history of the Demon clans as well.
As the story unfolds, we learn that the current Patriarch Sitri’s Brother, Aeshma was not only Fahd’s Father, but he has been killed in a way that prevents him entering the afterlife. On top of this Sitri has evidence that links Aeshma to Fahd, and this is why he hunts them.
And so Fahd sets off to the legendary ‘Deathfall Manor’ to find this evidence, and potentially set not only his Father to a peaceful afterlife, but to also save his Mother from being hunted for the rest of her life, and himself.
As with all of Russell’s books, the world-building is described in beautiful detail, from the small Demon village that is Fahd’s original home, to the eerie and foreboding fortress that is Deathfall Manor. Her descriptive work brings this story to life, so that as we move through the story with Fahd, it feels like we are following with him, looking over his shoulder, able to see everything he sees, Russell gives us such intricate details.
Fahd’s character is fascinating, as this young Demon, full of resentment at being on the run, but also fear and concern for his Mother. With the power of his bloodlines, he has the abilities of a Prime, making him extremely powerful, with the ability to pour mist from his body, creating terror in both Demon and Human alike. He can also succumb to the darkness and transfer into a huge Demon Prime, but if he does, there is the risk of turning feral, and so he has a great fear of doing so. Whilst he is a Demon, and as with all Demon-Kind there is that innate darkness that gives them their abilities, Fahd, like a lot of Demons, abhors killing, seeing it as only a very last resort if it is life or death, he has an incredibly strong moral code, unlike other members of his family, and it is intriguing learning of this, given how Demons are seen in ‘The Light of Darkness’ series, especially the early books.
This is a really captivating story, especially for anyone who is a fan of ‘the Light of Darkness’ Series, as it provides so much fascinating background, and thus makes it an absolute must read for fans. Russell continues to develop the Demon world, making this series utterly enthralling and just an extraordinary read.
This is a prequel Novella, and is the lead in to an upcoming series, so whilst it is self-contained, it does end with the obvious opening as is expected. Whilst there are obvious linkages to ‘The Light of Darkness’ series, if you haven’t read any of that series, it won’t make any difference, this is designed to be read as a new series. It is just that fans of ‘The Light of Darkness will get a bit more out of this book. Catrin Russell continues to deliver stunning books!!
