Why you wanna fly, blackbird?
you ain’t ever gonna fly.

it was easier to believe that everything had happened than to admit that, possibly, nothing had.with three of her six novels now available in english, it's evident that sara mesa is abundantly talented. too, she's intrepid in her fiction, fearless when it comes to writing about subjects others would consider taboo, risqué, or altogether indecorous. the spanish author's latest novel to be translated, among the hedges (cara de pan), is the tale of a burgeoning friendship between two outcasts: one a young girl, the other an old man (in the original spanish, they are named casi and el viejo, distractingly rendered as 'soon' and 'old man' here in the english)
that was the difference between them, between those who asked—insistent, tenacious, with violence hidden behind the soothing tone adults use to talk to children—and her, the one being questioned.
