Before her new home, and everyone in it, crumbles to dust…
Ava Richardson writes epic page-turning Young Adult Fantasy books. She creates lovable characters and drops them into intricate worlds that are barely contained within your eReader. Ava has written 21 YA dragon fantasy series, including her bestselling series Return of the Darkening and her recent series, Destia's Dragon Shifter War.
She grew up on a steady diet of fantasy and science fiction books handed down from her two big brothers – and despite being dog-eared and missing pages, she loved escaping into the magical worlds that those authors created. Her favorites were the ones about dragons; where they’d swoop, dive and soar through the skies of these enchanted lands.
Sometimes you can start reading in the middle of a series but this time you really need to read book one for it to make sense but it is well worth it ( think Harry Potter with magical realms instead of just one school ) Loads of twists and suprises in this story and a lot more to come . Emotional and exciting cant wait for the next book.

This is book two of the Ragond’s Witch Hunter series and the main characters are Yanna Gray and her dragon Phaedron. She is from Earth and was raised as a witch hunter by her parents and their group. She has settled fairly well in Ragond, at Stonehaven, as a student dragon rider and mage. A complete change from her former life and she has now figured out that she has a better life here than back in the human world. Her bond with Phaedron is getting ever stronger, with her being able to speak to him in her head, rather than out loud! The only issue she has, is whether to concentrate on either dragon rider training, or her magecraft? It seems that all the other students major in one or the other and no one seems to want to concentrate on both! The only thing she really misses from her former life are her two friends Ash and Felix. She has a good friend in Farica, who started with a long legacy of being a dragon rider and got her family to realise her strengths as a mage and was allowed to change her main studies around. Second year dragon rider Hardin, with his dragon Gauntlet, has also been friendly, with Farica thinking he likes her romantically! She shares classes in divination with Farica, where what she thought it all meant from her own experience, turns out to be quite wrong. After an accident at a nearby bridge, Farica mentions soul-skipping and Yanna ends up seeing the experience of one of the stones used in the bridge and how it rapidly lost its strength. Something strange is happening in Ragond and Mythos and a prophecy Farica saw in one of their classes, may well have a link to her past on Earth. Hardin asks her to volunteer to help with some dragon rider patrols, as some remote villages have been having problems with attacks. She patrols with Hardin and they end up coming across a small village that has been attacked, but Yanna notices that some of the injured have actually been shot, with bullets from a gun. Something they don’t have in any of the three realms of Ragond, Mythos and Aurea. She reports this problem to Professor Wyatt Catullus, who also came from Earth, before being taken to Aurea by a mad general and forced to use his invention for evil purposes. This is another link to her past and brings more worries! Wyatt leaves to update the council and speak to others in Caravon, so Yanna is left to explain what she can to her friends, but also keep her secrets. Another patrol leaves her in two minds as she discovers someone from her past and makes a decision that is completely against what she has promised to do in her new start in life as a dragon rider and mage. She reveals most of it to Farica, who is somewhat like Phaedron in her reply, which helps her to live with her decisions. When she is told to give up on her patrols by Wyatt, who she also told everything to, she then feels responsible when Hardin is badly injured. He doesn’t take the truth in the way she hoped and calls her a traitor, something she has to now live with. Her past is closer to coming for her than she thought. The discovery that time on Earth is running much faster than time on Ragond and Mythos, brings worrying news. The closed portal to Earth is showing disruptive signs of destruction and rebirth, with time running backwards and forwards at a great rate. Signs show that Ragond could soon become a waste land as all of it is destroyed by this imbalance of resonance between the realms, with Ragond being a receiver rather than producer of magic. The Witch Hunters of Earth have somehow found a way to open portals to Mythos and Ragond, and those in charge want to see the complete destruction of these realms, full of monsters and witches they don’t want on Earth. Yanna and all those she has come to know on Ragond and Mythos, and accept, are now facing her former and radical family, who hate anything to do with magic. Which will win out, family or her new life of magic and dragons? It seems she can’t escape her past and she will have to make a huge decision to either re-join her former family and their hatred of witches or stick it out with her new friends and new life of magic and wonder, which may be destroyed shortly. So much more to come as past and future must battle it out and Yanna must decide what to do next. Another cracking read in this new series, with lots of personal matters for Yanna to weigh in her new and old lives, as well as worries about the destruction of Ragond, with magic going awry. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Next up on my reading list, I continue the Ragond's Witch Hunter series. This second book takes place only a few short months after the first one, with Yanna growing more used to this new world and her partnership with Phaedron, until a new threat throws a big monkey wrench into everything.
Overall, this was a good follow-up to the first book, it's pretty seamless, helped by there not being much of a time skip from where last book ended and this one starts. And it starts us off with a dragon riding race, which was a lot of fun for me. Afterwards, though, the story takes its time to get going, in big part with Yanna trying to decide if she should stick to magecraft or switch to becoming a dragon rider full-time, and honestly, it did get a little dull for me. Thankfully, the story picks up afterwards when the new threat arises, and we get to see familiar faces.
It was pretty much guaranteed that Yanna would meet her old friends again, her family. That being said, not sure if I like the time skip, making Ash and Felix older (the latter now being Yanna's own age) and having had Yanna's parents be dead by now, it feels rather like a wasted opportunity. Still, the threat is quite real and good tension is created. The stakes are raised higher and the story advances well as the person who used to be closest to Yanna now becomes a bitter enemy, and it's done quite well. Ash has changed for the worst and the story does a good job displaying his descent into full-on villainy for what he believes are right and just reasons, while also showcasing more on Felix and some development for him too. Felix especially was quite sympathetic and relatable. And, as per usual, the dragons often stole the show whenever they popped up.
Unfortunately,, the book does have some flaws. Like I said, the story slows down for a while, and it gets a little dull, plus some of the dialogue can be a bit clunky. I was also a little peeved by Yanna's constant self-pitying and doubting (thankfully she eventually grows out of it and becomes stronger and more self-reliant), and a lot annoyed by the introduction of a romance between her and fellow dragon rider, Hardin. The romance is not done well (not helped by my general dislike of teen romance), and it doesn't help that Hardin is a pretty boring character, especially when compared to everyone else. Compared to Hardin, the quarter of Eloise, Keria, Rennaya and Damien have a lot more personality and are much more engaging, but sadly, much like in the first book, they're barely even on this one, and I just wish they were part of the cast as a group of friends, as Yanna's social circle is very tiny as it is. Plus, I really wanted to see more of Felix acclimating himself to the school, and the dragons, and all the non-human species who go and live there.
In the end, there are flaws that prevent the book from being great, but it was still a good book that I enjoyed. Looking forward to reading the third and final one.

The action in this delightful trilogy heats up in book 2! We still see some of the very fascinating classroom lectures at the magical school of Stonehaven in the realm of Ragond. To me, these classroom moments are some of the highlights of the series. It not only allows our female protagonist, still very new to Ragond, to learn about her new home but also allows the reader to appreciate the complex history and magic of not only Ragond but the realms connected to it, including Earth and Mythos. In this book, our female heroine is reunited with some of her Earthian friends, but the meeting is not at all what she hoped or imagined it would be. Let's just say she is gravely endangered by someone she never thought would have threatened her existence. We learn more about the complexity of the interconnection between the realms and the new time-shifting dissonance that's affecting several realms in unexpected ways, including nature. I don't want to give away too much, as this book and this series—as all have been I read or listened to by this author—are best experienced, especially the twists and turns that happen as Ragond becomes increasingly imperiled. In this book, I felt a little frustrated with the female protagonist at times. Sometimes, she's more bold than smart, and I much prefer a smart heroine! In book one, she created a web of lies to keep her witch-hunter past hidden, but in this book, truths will come out! How will they—and she!--be accepted by the people she now considers family, more supportive than her actual family on Earth ever was? You'll have to read the book! And I recommend you do so if you love well-written dragon fantasy with strong young female heroines. But certainly, start with book one of the series. Even though the author provides enough backstory at the beginning of subsequent books in her series, your experience of this book will be much richer if you've read book one first. Highly recommended!
I received a promo code for this audiobook, but that did not affect my review.
Life's all about choices, which choice for is the right choice, is the ultimate question. It shouldn't be too difficult, right? Well, Yanna has an uncanny knack of making the wrong choices. Although one can understand why she's torn, she hasn't exactly had the ideal life, what with parents who barely tolerate her, to being forced to do dreadful things, when all she ever wanted was to be accepted, needed and loved. She finds all that but not on Earth and definitely not from her parents! The first book in this series had me feeling such empathy and sympathy for Yanna, as she tried to reconcile what she was indoctrinated to believe and what she comes to understand as factual, are 2 completely diverse points of view. Add to that that she's a mage, the very entity she had hunted, it's no wonder her brain spins out of control! Coming to terms with magic and dragons, who and what she is was no easy task. Her feelings of guilt threaten to overwhelm her, as do the secrets she finds so difficult to release. But release them she does. The growth from the fearful young woman to the strength of character she now portrays is astounding, yet it was a process, a well depicted process, with pitfalls, self loathing and guilt. Farica continues to be a delight and true friend, Hardin finally opens himself up and the dragon Pheadron, well, put it this way, I'd like him to have chosen me! I enjoyed the subtleties of the plot, especially around Felix and Ash, just goes to show, nothing is ever certain! Love this series
The second book in the Ragond's Witch Hunter series follows Yanna's progress in her new world. She is coming to terms with her new powers and is starting to feel at home with her new family. She is looking forward to developing her dragon rider and mage skills to help her in her newfound world. Unfortunately, her peace is about to be shattered. Her Earthian 'family' has found a way to get to Mythos without using the damaged Earth portals and continue their crusade against all magic users. Yanna now has to make some serious choices.
Our heroine has to grow up quickly and make some difficult decisions while trying to steer a tricky course through the Ragondian society. Sympathetically written, Ava has created another intriguing and lively series. Decisions are taken, creating more problems than they solve, and Ava creates tension between the characters to keep the story moving along and the reader interested.
I loved the story and can't wait for the next installment.

Book Two by Ava Richardson 'Dragon's Protector' is Fabulous. Book Two's pace has picked up and the adventures start in right away. It's been four months since Yanna has started studying mage craft and Dragon Riding at Stonehaven and she is beginning to wonder if her focus should be on Dragon Riding. Like any student it's not unusual to question your major in school. Ava writes about Yanna's mage schooling in detail. The investigative research Yanna does shows how helpful she is to the magic society. I love how Ava brings in the benefits of forensic investigation, critical thinking, and problem solving in mage craft versus the aspects of just power in war and dragon riding and how important it is to find solutions to problems even in war. Yanna also learns the importance the choices we make. Are we choosing for the greater good of all or making smaller personal choices that helps only ourselves? Yanna is growing in leaps and bounds with dangerous twist and turns, unexpected surprises, enemies and a family reunion. This book is packed with everything take my word for it. With book two so exciting I can hardly wonder what will happen in book three. This is a must read.
This story is an epic YA fantasy adventure perfect for all ages, that features mages, portals, dragons, riders and witch hunters. It's full of action and adventure, with dragon racing, insights into the academy and all the different types of magic that can be learnt, including new skills that Yanna has an affinity for. Yanna is strong and resilient but has many difficult choices to make in how she will shape her life going forward, as well as escape her difficult past.
I would highly recommend the audiobook of this, the narrator embodies the different characters so well, and portrays their feelings with ease so that your drawn into the story. This was easy to listen too and get lost in the beautiful story for hours. With lots of drama and an emotional conclusion looking forward to the next book.
(While this is book 2 of a series, it can be read/listened to as a standalone as you get enough background information to understand the characters and actions)
Wow an epic continuation of Yanna’s story. Yanna is having to train, learn and cope at the academy. She is learning to be a mage, a dragon rider and developing her bond. With strange things occuring in the other realms, Yanna is trying to solve problems with the portals, protect Ragond and discover her place. There are choices to make which are not easy. Full of academy, growing bonds and character development this is a well written, enjoyable and fast paced action, magical, portals and dragon adventure. The ending is emotional and can’t wait to see how this continues. I loved this story.

Dragon’s protector is another excellent dragon rider story by Ava Richardson. Once again the queen of dragon riders has created a coming of age story full of challenging adventure and of course dragons. This excellent sequel to Dragon’s Mage, continuing the previous story perfectly. Not only does it show the main characters continued growth but also has her facing challenges few ever have. Having finish the story I am now reading it again while I eagerly await the book which will follow Dragon’s Protector.

Ava Richardson does not disappoint in this great second book in this series. Yanna Grey continues her studies as a mage in Ragond under the mentorship of Wyatt. Her past as a witch hunter continues to haunt her as does return of her old friends Ash and Felix, who are not what they used to be. I love seeing Wyatt as a mentor character, but where is his family? Overall, great story. Yanna is a fascinating character as she is redeemed from her old life and recognises the errors of her old life. The concept of redemption and choice are really prominent in this fascinating series. 5/5 stars.

When she is invited by Hardin to patrol Mythos she lies to him when she sees Ash who she knew on earth. Yanna struggles with her deception and finally tells Wyatt. She has to work through what is right and what is wrong with magic. She has to figure out how to correct the deception and gain the trust from her new friends. I am looking forward to the next book.

As Yanna continues her mage and dragon rider training, her past continues to haunt her and becomes a threat to Ragond. Strange developments begin to occur and suddenly she is faced with past witch hunter friends and finds that even stranger things are happening in relation to time on Earth and Ragond. Fast paced action packed read that you will have trouble putting down as life changing decisions and plans must be made. Can't wait for the next book in the series to see how all will play out!.

I found this book to be one of the greatest Ava Richardson has done thus far. This entire trilogy so far is better that I had expected. Yanna must overcome her fears of her past and try to move on. But what happens when the past catches up to her? Who will she help, the Earthians or the Ragonians & Mythoi?.

The main character in this book is still learning to adjust to her new home in Ragan and how her choices will affect that world and her previous family is still trying to hunt her and they were wanting to this and wanting to harm the world that she has come to like and make friends in her new world and it is it page turner A wonderful book.

The story continues where it left off with Yanna trying to get on with her life and learn magic where she can and trying to make up for a past that continues to haunt her. But it is not to be. Her past soon catches up with her and now she must make the most difficult decision of her life. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat. I couldn’t stop reading until it was done. Now I can’t wait for the next book.
Exciting, drama, romance and betrayal. Ever since Yanna and Bronwen struggled for the amulet and Yanna was sent to Ragond the worlds are changing and not for the good. The hate the Witch Hunters have for anything magical is going to destroy both worlds. This book was intense and I loved everything about it.
Audio version - this was an excellent listen, full of detail and description. The world building is amazing and that cliff hanger ouch! I'm really enjoying the variety of characters and their capabilities it makes for an interesting listen/read (I read book 1).
I would recommend this to someone wanting to get into fantasy it's an easy and captivating read with an amazing plot line.
Enjoyable YA dragon rider story. great MC strong female with interesting back story as a witch hunter. The story is interesting and has unexpected turns. Looking forward to the next book.
It's beyond irritating waiting on Yanna to make up her mind and quit dwelling on what could have been, was it my fault, what should I do?Come on,Live Free or Die but do it soon
This was a great story! First of all, the narration is on point and the characters were great. The world building was awesome. The story was super easy to follow. Great moral messages and coming of age.
I loved it! Ava is a fantastic author and her books are so creative. Full of wonderous characters, who draw you in from page one. I highly recommend checking it out!
Dragon’s Protector is another home run and as always the characters and world building are epic! I highly recommend it and I can’t wait for the next book!!!
Loved seeing a POC as the mc, honestly there isn’t enough of that in literature! Well written book, with a beautiful world and a great narrator to bring it to life.
What an exciting follow-up to the series! There was still some of the same issue from the first book where exposition was not very creatively inserted and was spelled out blatantly. That wasn't a big deal though, as the rest of the story and creativity made up for it.
Early on there's an actual fortune telling scene predicting the future. It was a dry scene in itself with a lot of classroom instruction, but it was fun to try to predict the plot from it, and to align moments in the story with the predictions from earlier. I think I got pretty much all of the predictions wrong, though. 🤣
There were some new kinds of magic that cropped up in this book now that the initial world and characters are established. As usual, that's TOTALLY what I'm here for and I loved the creativity in the rules and mysteries in their lore. Some of the delivery of it was a bit uncreative, with teachers literally just lecturing to students (and by proxy, me the reader), but whatever -- use the medium I guess, right?
For those who were hoping for a little more of the actual dragons in the title, you'll get it! Right from page one, in fact! There's a lot more natural integration of the dragons as characters now that Yanna has settled in a bit and we can learn more about them. Unsurprisingly, their world is defined largely by the presence of dragons, and we start to see more of them interacting with it.
I'm so excited about the direction the story is going! I'll definitely be reading the next (final?) book in this series! Side note: it's super hard to write about sequels without ruining so much of the first book...
Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy. This is my honest review!
