No conocía a la autora y, en primer lugar, quiero dar las gracias a Penguin por dejarme conocerla. Esta escritora, con las palabras precisas, con frases creadas con muchos adjetivos, con mucha descripción pero sin ser pesada, nos narra una historia familiar. Una historia que en ciento veinte páginas, te da a conocer todo lo que necesitas saber. Unas vidas con no más de una docena de personajes, no necesita más, aunque los más importantes son tres. Una madre que se rebeló en su niñez, una hija que se marchó y un hermano que la sigue esperando. Una historia que Appanah nos va desvelando poco a poco en capítulos cortos. Unas vidas marcadas por las faltas de demostraciones amorosas, el no saber, o no poder, expresar los sentimientos y con un personaje, Lobo, que lo quieres desde el momento en que entra en tu vida. Una pequeña joya que recomiendo y de las que te dejan varios días digiriendo la historia. Maravilloso.

I enjoy speculating about the International Booker Longlist, which is announced on 10 March, though (and possibly because) it is likely to produce stuff I haven't heard of.
This wonderful novel opens with 17 year old Wolf arrested by police and sent to a remand centre after causing a road accident when driving without a license. He is trying to find his older sister who left home 10 years earlier after a heated argument.
Appanah manages to fit so much into such a short book as the story delves into three generations of the family to explain how Wolf got to where he is. The prose is immediately captivating, quite haunting in its beauty so that it has the feel of a dark fairy tale; it actually does begin "Once upon a time.."
The narrative perspective shifts from character to character; Wolf's mother Phoenix, once Eliette, who as a 7 year old was made up, dressed up and perversely displayed before the townfolk on stage singing Clair de Lune, leaving her mentally scared; Wolf himself, plagued with terrible anxiety which only running can relieve; and his much missed sister, Paloma, who was forged her own life, fragile though it clearly is.
This is the sort of book that has a deeply emotional poignancy, when from the precise one might have expected bleakness. It is Appanah's language, coupled with Strachan's translation, that wins out. I have enjoyed Appanah's writing before, but this is an extraordinary achievement.
My favourite of this year's bunch so far.

I liked the idea of this book but struggled with the storytelling. It’s so ethereal I didn’t know what was going on. It has big melancholy vibes. Not much for me to hold on to beside vibes though.

Un adolescente parte hacia la ciudad, con escasa experiencia en la conducción de un auto, y sin licencia. Después de un largo viaje, su inexperiencia lo lleva a provocar un accidente, y termina arrestado en un instituto penal de menores.
¿Qué hay detrás de este episodio imprudente? ¿Una aventura juvenil, un acto desesperado?
A lo largo de la novela iremos conociendo a los otros personajes y sus historias, una niña prodigio, un niño con rasgos autistas; y todo en el marco de dos generaciones de familias disfuncionales, y personas seriamente dañadas.
La narración de Appanah es impecable y fluida y los personajes estás muy bien construidos, aunque en mi caso la historia me pareció correcta y buena, sin ser notable.
Una buena novela, que más allá del daño y el dolor, deja lugar a la esperanza.

Tik skumji.
Tik daudz paliek nepateikts un ir atstāts lasītāja interpretācijai. Par garīgo veselību, par bērnības traumām, par noslēpumiem un nepateikto. Domāju, ka katrs šeit saredzēs ko atšķirīgu.
Un kas ir ar to bedri pagalmā? Vai es esmu vienīgā tik tumši domājoša?
Tik daudz paliek nepateikts un ir atstāts lasītāja interpretācijai. Par garīgo veselību, par bērnības traumām, par noslēpumiem un nepateikto. Domāju, ka katrs šeit saredzēs ko atšķirīgu.

"Érase una vez un país que construyó cárceles para niños..."
Así empieza esta novela de 120 páginas que no nos habla de cárceles físicas sino de las cárceles que cada uno lleva en su interior. Nos habla de como Lobo de 17 años es llevado a un centro después de haber cogido el coche de su madre y provocar un accidente. Y con este inicio nos lleva a la vida de Fénix ( la madre que se rebeló en su niñez), de Paloma (la hermana que se marchó y no volvió a buscarlo) y la suya, la de Lobo, que sigue esperando a su hermana y mientras espera, corre para escapar de la vida.
La historia de una familia, de unos traumas heredados, de falta de afecto, de falta de capacidad para expresar sentimientos, de frustraciones y rechazos.
De cómo en las familias nos aman y de cómo necesitamos que nos amen (que puede que no coincida), de cómo nos educan y de cómo después educamos, de cómo se puede estar encerrado en una cárcel y de cómo se puede, estando en libertad vivir encerrado en nuestros miedos, inseguridades y ansiedades, que nos hacen vivir con dolor dándole vueltas al pasado e incluso sentirnos en una prisión mientras soñamos.
Una novela breve sin grandes descripciones ni profundidad en los personajes, rápida de leer pero no de digerir, de una belleza dolorosa, de traumas heredados, de fata de comunicación y de relaciones difíciles entre padres e hijos pero sobre todo de esperanza para que pueda darse el perdón y la reconciliación.

D'un côté, le style est présent. Certains passages sont absolument sublimes, par exemple p.46
"Il ne faut rien regretter parce qu'il faut bien que ça se termine, ce faux-semblant qu'est l'enfance, il faut bien que les masques soient retirés, les imposteurs démasqués, les abcès crevés, il faut bien que cesse toute velléité du mieux, du magnifique, du meilleur, il faut bien en finir avec les belles paroles, les bons sentiments, les rêves doucereux, il faut bien, un jour, arracher à coup de dents sa place au monde."
Et d'autres passages sonnent justes, p91
"Sa vie est claire avec des touches pastel. Elle voudrait des emportements, elle voudrait faire comme les autres, ces élans, ces cris, ces baisers, cette rage à vivre sa jeunesse mais elle ne peut pas, elle s'efforce d'être ici, un peu, assez mais pas trop, et c'est comme si elle était une stagiaire dans sa propre existence, en attendant d'y être confirmée. En attendant mieux, cette vie est parfaitement supportable."
Ouch.
Mais malgré toute cette très belle écriture, on constate des répétitions étranges, comme "masque" dans le premier paragraphe cité, ou "en attendant" dans le second, ou p40 "Possède t-elle un don pour les langues, [...], entend t-elle plusieurs langues [...]". J'ai du mal à voir si c'est voulu, ou si il s'agit d'une erreur partagée par l'autrice et son éditeur.
Malheureusement, j'ai du mal avec les livres aussi courts (mais j'ai aussi du mal avec les histoires de famille, donc bon). Il me semble toujours manquer de substance, et c'est d'autant plus dommageable quand l'auteur a une écriture aussi belle à lire que celle-ci. J'en veux encore ! Je lirais dès que possible Tropique de la violence. Son sujet m'intéresse déjà bien plus.

Grāmata kā benzīna, jasmīnu, rūsas un dārza zemes sajaukums. Tā ir galvenās varones Eljetas, vēlāk Fēniksas dzīves smarža un šādā mazliet smagnēji drūmā, bet tai pat laikā hipnotizējoši haotiskā pasaulē viņa pēc saviem noteikumiem mēģina audzināt bērnus Palomu un Vilku. Mēģina. Bet viss aiziet šķērsām.
Ārkārtīgi smagnējs, bet kontrastējoša poētisma apdvests ģimenes stāsts. Par to, kā pieaugušo bērnības rētas parvērš ne tikai viņu pašu, bet arī viņu bērnu dzīves.

Phénix, une femme dépressive, a élevé seule ses deux enfants, une fille, Paloma, comme l’oiseau, pour lui donner des ailes et un garçon, Loup comme le prédateur, pour lui donner des griffes. Cette mère a traversé beaucoup d’épreuves dans sa vie et elle est empêchée dans son don d’amour pour ses enfants. Ces derniers le sentent et petit à petit s’éloignent de leur mère. Paloma a quitté sa mère à sa majorité et Loup qui fait une fugue au début du roman finit dans une maison d’arrêt pour mineur. Le roman va alors s’écrire à rebours et s’intéresser grâce à des retours successifs dans le temps à l’histoire de Phénix, à l’éducation qu’elle a reçue de ses parents et à celle qu’elle a donnée à ses enfants. Sans trop dévoiler l’intrigue, on apprend que Phénix enfant s’appelait Éliette. Pourquoi ce changement de nom ? Pourquoi si peu d’amour pour ses enfants ? "Le ciel par-dessus le toit", petit clin d’œil à Verlaine, est un roman déroutant, plein de douceur et de poésie, mais qu’on lit la boule au ventre. Nathacha Appanah y raconte la renaissance difficile d’une femme blessée et sa métamorphose, celle de la petite Éliette en Phénix, femme tatouée, d’une beauté à la fois glaciale et sauvage, indépendante et peu maternelle. Son fils, Loup, est un enfant lunaire, perché dans les étoiles, il ne résiste à la prison qu’avec la poésie, qu’en examinant ce qu’il y a dehors alors qu’il est dedans. Mais l’univers carcéral n’est pas le sujet du livre et il ne faut pas y chercher de cohérence avec le réel comme dans une fiction réaliste. Le roman pose plutôt les questions du comment on est élevé, du comment on est aimé ou pas pour finir enfermer. C’est un roman sur l’avant-prison, sur l’héritage, sur l’éducation et sur les prisons que chacun porte en soi. Car on se rend compte que l’enfermement peut aussi se jouer à l’air libre et que les autres personnages du récit, bien que dehors, sont aussi enfermés dans leurs peurs, dans leurs angoisses, dans leur passé et même dans leurs rêves. Un roman troublant, d’une beauté tragique, sur les creux de l’existence.

En esta novela acompañamos a los personajes y vamos construyendo su historia familiar a medida que avanzamos con la lectura. Es breve pero con su dosis de intensidad y realidad. Me ha gustado y la recomiendo.

Vissliktākā grāmata, ko esmu izlasījusi. Teikumiem nav nekāds sakars, tāda sajūta, ka kāds skolnieks to uzrakstīja un gribējai, lai izskatās profesionālāk, tāpēc pievienoja vārdus, kurus pats nezina. Un tik random, funky vārds Vilks tf. Briesmīga tulkošana vai arī vienkārši stāsts. Nebija jēga.

Un muy buen descubrimiento el de esta escritora, buscaré sus otros libros. Me ha sorprendido muy gratamente. Una historia muy bien narrada y una moraleja que no nos resulta extraña a quienes hemos tenido hijos. A veces, huyendo de aquello que más daño nos hizo en nuestra infancia acabamos o bien reproduciendo esquemas o bien haciendo daño a quienes más queremos.

Lai gan sākumā neizprotama un miglaina, turpinājumā pamazām atšķetinoties un ainai noskaidojoties, šī grāmata mani aizķēra. Noslēgumā arvien daudz kas palika neizteikts, bet vismaz koptēls bija noskaidrojies. Šī ir paaudžu grāmata - kā vieni apstākļi ietekmē tālākos pakāpeniskā ķēdītē. Drastiskā ķēdītē. Eljetas vecāki viņu čubinājuši un pucējuši, lolojuši, taču aizgājuši mazliet par tālu. Eksponēšana un stereotipiska tēla veidošana - tas bijis spiediens un slodze, ko Eljeta augot lielāka vairs nevarējusi izturēt. Meitas izskaistināšana un pat izmantošana, lai iemantotu apkārtējo apbrīnu un stāvokli sabiedrībā - vecāki to pat, iespējams, darījuši neapzināti, jo bija jūtama viņu mīlestība pret meitu. Lai gan bieži arī tā bija pārspīlēta un perfekciju pieprasoša.
Būdama pietiekami pieaugusi, Eljeta izlēma pārvērsties par Fēniksu - jaunu sievieti, kas sagrauj visas iepriekš spēkā esošās normas, nokrāsojot matus, aizverot durvis, nodedzinot māju. Protests. Pret pasauli, pret netaisnību, pret perfekciju.
Un te notiek ielekšana otrā grāvī. Pārāk tālu no vidusceļa. Fēniksa attālina savus bērnus no sevis, lai tikai ar viņiem nonotiktu tas pats, kas ar Fēniksu bērnībā. Pat dod dzīvnieku un putnu vārdus. Lai viss būtu dabiski, savā vaļā, nepieradināti. Tomēr viņa nesaprot, ka šis variants tāpat liks viņas bērniem ciest.
Tā notiek bieži. Viņu ietērpj piegulošās kleitiņās, kas liedz brīvi elpot. Viņu grimē - melna līnija apvelk plakstiņus sārtināti vaigi, uzliektas skropstas, lūpas nokrāsotas spilgti sarkanas. Ilgi kārto matus sacirto, ieveido, saglauž, iepūš laku. Dažreiz māte viņai uzzīmē dzimumzīmīti uz labā vaiga. Ienākot salonā, vispirms atskan komplimenti par viņas apģērbu, matiem, manierem. Tad seko iedrošinājumi. Tu esi vēl glītāka, kad dziedi. Dažkārt sievietes nodomā, ka varbūt meitenite ir mazliet par daudz mākslota - sarkana mute, ar acu zīmuli pagarinātas stirniņas acis, ieslīpā poza, kurpes uz papēžiem, rokas iespraustas gurnos -, bet šī doma ātri izzūd, to pārklāj cita - nomierinoša un tik ierasta: meitenītēm patīk saposties. Reizēm vīrieši savādi skatās uz bērnu, un nevajag domāt, ka šie skatieni slīd pa viņas apģērbu un izkrāsoto seju, nē, tie skar viņu, sasmērē viņu. Šie skatieni runā par kaut ko tādu, ko viņa vēl nezina, un viņa nojauš tā spēku un dīvaino raksturu. (28.lpp)

Vai tie ieviesīsies kaut kur smadzenēs un kādu dienu nav zināms, kāpēc un kā, atkal parādīsies? Vai vārdiem būs tūlītējas sekas, izraisot dusmas, skumjas, pārsteigumu? Būdama pietiekami pieaugusi, Eljeta izlēma pārvērsties par Fēniksu - jaunu sievieti, kas sagrauj visas iepriekš spēkā esošās normas, nokrāsojot matus, aizverot durvis, nodedzinot māju. Protests. Pret pasauli, pret netaisnību, pret perfekciju.
Un te notiek ielekšana otrā grāvī. Pārāk tālu no vidusceļa. Fēniksa attālina savus bērnus no sevis, lai tikai ar viņiem nonotiktu tas pats, kas ar Fēniksu bērnībā. Pat dod dzīvnieku un putnu vārdus. Lai viss būtu dabiski, savā vaļā, nepieradināti. Tomēr viņa nesaprot, ka šis variants tāpat liks viņas bērniem ciest.
Tā notiek bieži. Viņu ietērpj piegulošās kleitiņās, kas liedz brīvi elpot. Viņu grimē - melna līnija apvelk plakstiņus sārtināti vaigi, uzliektas skropstas, lūpas nokrāsotas spilgti sarkanas. Ilgi kārto matus sacirto, ieveido, saglauž, iepūš laku. Dažreiz māte viņai uzzīmē dzimumzīmīti uz labā vaiga. Ienākot salonā, vispirms atskan komplimenti par viņas apģērbu, matiem, manierem. Dažkārt sievietes nodomā, ka varbūt meitenite ir mazliet par daudz mākslota - sarkana mute, ar acu zīmuli pagarinātas stirniņas acis, ieslīpā poza, kurpes uz papēžiem, rokas iespraustas gurnos -, bet šī doma ātri izzūd, to pārklāj cita - nomierinoša un tik ierasta: meitenītēm patīk saposties. Reizēm vīrieši savādi skatās uz bērnu, un nevajag domāt, ka šie skatieni slīd pa viņas apģērbu un izkrāsoto seju, nē, tie skar viņu, sasmērē viņu. Tout petit roman lu d’un trait qui commence par 3mots « Il était une fois... » comme pour un conte....il y a un loup (un jeune garçon de 17 ans porte le prénom de Loup)...des situations angoissantes, des drames, mais le roman nous laisse avec l’espoir de jours meilleurs...
Une situation familiale dysfonctionnelle sur 3 générations que l’élégance de l’écriture de Natacha Appanah rend non seulement soutenable, mais parfois lumineuse.
Réussir à intégrer une écriture aussi poétique dans un roman aussi noir...un tour de force.
Je découvre cette auteure, je la relirai avec enthousiasme.

I love reading Appanah however The Sky above the roof was a massive miss for me in terms of storytelling. I do wish the plot was moderately expanded on while dealing with generational trauma and complex family dynamics. But the narration fell a bit short and the plot frayed at the edges.

I'd like to read this in French - sometimes the prose was odd in a way that didn't feel intentional, sometimes things just didn't quite flow right. I want to see how the author wrote it originally.

I’m intrigued by the way that the brevity of a short novel can bring a distinctive feel to familiar subject matter. One of the Boys by Daniel Magariel springs to mind here, the way it puts a toxic family relationship into extreme close-up by removing all but the most essential detail.
Another example is The Sky Above the Roof, the latest novel to appear in English by Mauritian-French author Nathacha Appanah. It revolves around three characters who are all, in some way, ill at ease in the world. We begin with young Wolf in the back of a police van. He drove on the wrong side of the road, there was a crash, and now here we are. To an outside observer, Wolf may just seem a boy who doesn’t pay attention. In fact, though his mind mixes up times and memories of events, his mechanical instinct is something else. His mother thinks of him like this:
At the time of the crash, Wolf was driving to visit his sister Paloma, who walked out years ago. Paloma is someone who hides on the sidelines of life. Then there’s the siblings’ mother, who was named Eliette as a girl, and hated the way her parents made her dress up and sing – which is to say nothing of where that led. She made a life for herself as an adult, changing her appearance and calling herself Phoenix. She also made sure that she wouldn’t constrict her children in the way her parents did with her – but, as we see, not everything turns out as intended.
The Sky Above the Roof has 130 pages and encompasses this family’s immediate history, as well as Wolf’s brief (though still harrowing) stay in the remand centre. It seems to me that the novel loses some nuance of cause and effect through its brevity: sometimes it feels as though upbringing is the be-all and end-all. But its shortness also brings Appanah’s book intensity, making it a string of set-pieces with that swirling prose in Geoffrey Strachan’s fine translation.

One night, seventeen year old Wolf steals his mother’s car. Unlicensed, he causes an accident and is arrested and imprisoned, leaving his mother and sister to pick up the pieces.
The Sky Above the Roof is a stunningly lyrical novella inspired by the poem Le Ciel Est, Par-Dessus Le Toit by Paul Verlaine, written while the poet was in prison. This book reads much like an extended poem, filled with imagery and metaphors, detailing the complex inner emotions of a family of three who feel imprisoned (whether physically or mentally). Wolf, a boy who struggles to handle his emotions, is physically imprisoned, dreaming of running long distances. Paloma, his sister, feels mentally imprisoned by her mother and the silence and timidity that hold her back. And Phoenix, their mother, was imprisoned by her parents’ expectations, and reacted by self destructing. The three of them collectively look to the sky as their means of escape and freedom.
The imagery and metaphors in this book are insanely clever. The prison as a metaphor for the imprisonment and restrictions of familial and societal pressures, social norms, and the expectations of others. Similarly the sky is a metaphor for freedom and peace. The writing is stunning and beautifully translated in a way that retains the original poetry of the French. Overall, this is a delightfully emotional book, which has such depth in relatively few pages (the book is around 130 pages in length) and impacted me more than I could have expected.

The book is structured around a simple poem, Le Ciel, from whose first line this book takes its title. In the preface the translator provides a version of the poem and speaks of his delight around how the themes within it are echoed in the poem. Having been primed to look for those themes, I too found joy in discovering them. The bough against the sky, the strange bird, the glass terrarium encapsulating their home, and of course the blue blue sky.
This is a quiet book about people and observations rather than plot. If you like Woolf then you'll likely enjoy this too.

Tengo sentimientos encontrados con lo que respecta a esta novela. Por un lado, la lectura es ágil, aunque las referencias al pasado a veces despistan más que ayudan. Por otro, no es exactamente el tipo de libro que esperaba. No obstante, la historia narra a la perfección algo que desgraciadamente es más habitual de lo que nos gustaría en los tiempos que corren. Una familia desestructurada y las consecuencias que ello conlleva para los menores de edad. Lobo, tiene 17 años, una familia en la que no encaja y una hermana a la que hace tiempo que no ve. Un día decide coger el coche de su madre e ir en su busca, provocando un accidente de tráfico. A partir de ahí, nos encontramos con una historia en perspectiva desde el punto de vista de Fénix, la madre, Paloma, su hija y el propio Lobo.
Si algo hace bien Natasha es narrar los distintos puntos de vista. En definitiva, una buena historia de la que aprender que no todo está perdido y que desgraciadamente nuestros actos y decisiones conllevan consecuencias importantes en lo que a nuestros hijs respecta.

"Dieva dēļ, kā ir jādzīvo šī draņķa dzīve, lai tā ik dienas jums nekostu?!"
Sākumā šķiet, ka grāmata ir pilnīgi tumša, skumja un nolemta. Stāsts ir par vairākām paaudzēm un audzināšanas pieejām, kļūdām, kas diemžēl smagi ietekmē bērnus. Pirmais stāsta par vecākiem, kas ar savu aprūpi un mīlestību bērnu audzina pēc saviem sapņiem, otrs par to pašu bērnu, kurš cenšas būt pilnīgi pretējs un savējos mīl attālināti.
Uz beigām stāsts kļūst gaišāks, pelēkāks, bet tāpat ļoti skumjš.
Grāmatas valoda ļoti liriska, dzejiska, baudāma.
Sākumā šķiet, ka grāmata ir pilnīgi tumša, skumja un nolemta. Stāsts ir par vairākām paaudzēm un audzināšanas pieejām, kļūdām, kas diemžēl smagi ietekmē bērnus. I struggled to get into the prose and I’m not sure if that’s the writing or the translation.
There were a few things that felt tactless such as rich description for the white characters and minimal description outside of colour labels for the non white characters.
The characters were well built otherwise and the main characters seemed to all add something to the story. There were some well laid themes throughout, it just felt unfinished.
