The Blunt Playwright: An Introduction to Playwriting

Rate this book
The Blunt Playwright won’t tell you everything there is to know about playwriting. It won’t even try. What it will do is examine process, structure, dialogue, and character; provide classic and contemporary scenes to study; outline clever exercises to strengthen writing skills; and so much more. Highly regarded and used in schools everywhere, this updated edition cements its place as one of the best resources for playwrights.

From organizing the structure of a script to developing characters’ voices, from employing visual effects on stage to writing comedy, or from self-promotion to getting produced and published, this guide has something for everyone, no matter the stage of their career.

Like the title says this author is blunt about playwriting. The book covers so much ground that I'm not sure there's anything left although it's possible that more detail could be afforded to some sections. That said were I to go into playwriting with the notion of actually wanting to see my play produced I would certainly want to pick up a copy of this book to own. The end includes a number of valuable references there are also exercises to prompt you and build your writing skills and these are good not just for playwrights but for all writers. Bottom line highly recommend this book

I accidentally stole a copy of this book from my English teacher.
Mr. Perry if you see this I’m sorry, you moved schools before I could return it to you; but it is safe and in good condition, I hope I can give it back one day.
