This book is a cluster of short stories. I felt as if I was looking into a personal journal the author wrote their dreams in. But not your funny/sweet dreams. But ones that subconsciously show you your deepest fears. Whether it’s you go missing, being haunted, missing family, not ready for battle, extra terrestrial, etc. One of the stories I’d like to see expand is the “Attraction”.

This book is a collection of weird and wonderful short stories. This was a very quick read as the whole thing consisted of about 40 pages....so deffo a one sitting read!

The short stories were:-

Death
A very interesting one to start with. I knew I'd like them all if they were similar.
I'd like to see a long version of this!

Acceptance
This went on the weird category for me, with an intriguing cliffhanger!

Underground
Mmmm brutal! If you like horror and shock factor, you'll like this for sure!

Perception
This one made me sad....in an thoughtful way. This may change your mind about something in your life!

Missing
Tis was a creepy little story. I'd like to know some more!

Attraction
My absolute favourite, including my favourite thing of recurring dreams.
Creepy houses! A dream becoming real! What does it alllll mean?! I'd LOVE a full book on this one!

Conspiracy
Set in 2049, we see a very different world after an deadly virus! Another brutal and shocking short story!

Invasion
I could imagine this one so well. It's a war zone, but they're fighting giant terrifying creatures!

Deception
This one was confusing! In a good way though! Another what does it all mean kind of story?!

So a little round up, I recommend if you like:-
- Short stories!
- Weird and wonderful
- Cliffhangers which leave you dazzled
- Horror
- Shock factor
- Stories that leave you with lots of questions and thoughts

Little stories to talk about for sure!
I imagine they'd raise lots of fun, interesting conversations!

1. Death - 4/5
About: Family life and death.
Review: Good ideas, needs a bit of editing, unsettling and surprising ending. This story felt kind of familiar to me, like something I’d watch in an adult comedy cartoon (which I enjoy).

2. Acceptance - 3/5
About: A DMT trip.
Review: I thought that it's highly unrealistic for our main character to try DMT by themselves, when Max and the hippie friend suggest and provide the drug in the first place. However, I liked the description of the trip and felt challenged creatively. I think this is also something I’d watch in an adult comedy cartoon. Unfortunately, I thought the ending was a bit unsatisfactory.

3. Underground - 2/5
About: A couple go down a hatch and meets someone unexpected.
Review: I don't want to give too much away, but I would've liked more description of the main characters, setting etc and a more distinct atmosphere. I also did not enjoy the reveal, have no interest and didn't really see the point. I wish time periods at the beginning and end were more clearly established. However, I liked the last sentence and every sentence matters in a short story. Maybe I just didn’t get it.

4. Perception - 3/5
About: Two friends race together outside and there's a genocide or mass killing of some sort at night.
Review: This was alright. It gave me vibes of aliens and UFOs taking cattle, but I don't know if that was the intention. I do wish this short story took more of a futuristic direction.

5. Missing - 4/5
About: Main characters attend a friend's funeral and strange events occur linked to the friend's death.
Review: I liked this. I enjoyed the reminiscing of the past and character interactions.

6. Attraction - 4/5
About: Main character has the same dream about a house for 14 years, is pursuing an art degree and works at a coffee shop. Then visits the house one day and finds someone unexpected.
Review: I liked this. The story resonated with me and reminds me of Coraline. It was relatable and meaningful.

7. Conspiracy - 5/5
About: A post-apocalyptic society.
Review: Really good! This is the best short story yet. The beginning is really detailed and well explained. We follow our main characters until the end and I felt that there was a really good explanation for why the world is this way. This short story reminded me of Orphan Black in the best way possible and that’s quite hard to achieve in so few words. Kind of reminds me of The 100 as well, which I like.

8. Invasion - 4/5
About: An invasion on a military base.
Review: I liked this, but thought it was too similar to Perception. I feel this is a better version of an invasion story, because the characters and purpose are established better.

9. Deception - 3/5
About: Main character is being questioned about extraterrestrial events that he cannot recall.
Review: I don't think this is the best short story to end this collection. I liked the interrogation process and I also felt a bit frustrated for the main character, but the plot doesn't really pull me in.

Average rating: 3.55 rounded to 4 out of 5.

Overall thoughts and opinions:
I think you need a certain mindset for these short stories. It’s incredibly short, even for a short story at 43 pages. Therefore this book took me about an hour to read because I reread the short stories a few times, so that my reviews were as fair as possible. The formatting is good and perfectly readable. I thought the start is solid and there are common themes such as death, aliens, and the paranormal. I would’ve liked to seen a story about time-travel and feel it would have fit in, but I understand it might not be feasible. Lastly I think with some editing in general (specifically grammar), the work will be more polished but there is a good try.

I do want to note that it’s ok for short stories to remind me of other media I am aware of and tend to enjoy anyway. I don’t really read a lot of short stories, so it was an adjustment for sure. I believe my perspective is normal for short stories as the reader must fill the details by themselves and really consider what they’re reading. It is not disrespect or a slight implying unoriginality.

Edit: I should disclose that the author approached me via Instagram DMs asking me to read and review their short story collection. I don’t usually write very long reviews on my Instagram (@amolikareads). However, it was my choice entirely to read and review this. The book is free as of writing this review on the Kindle store, so I did not pay for this book but no one else would at this point. I was not forced nor paid to write this review. These are all my honest thoughts and opinions.

**Minor Spoilers**

I really enjoyed this book. The description of events were so well written, it felt like you were truly experiencing these things with the characters. The stories get progressively darker which I'll admit I wasn't expecting. I loved the thrill and suspense. There were a couple of stories that stood out to me more then others, but honestly I enjoyed them all. The four stories that stood out most to me were:

-Death: I liked how this story started with a dream that symbolized death and being afraid. The use of metaphors in this particular story made the story feel more alive. A large theme in this story was family and the importance of it. It showed how life is too short and we should use our time wisely. I also liked the little twist at the end.

-Underground: Starting from this story it gets a bit darker, We have the first characters killed off too. I liked the thrill this one gave me before anything significant even happened. Another thing that I thought was brilliantly done was the adding of Russian troops and commander. I found it a very interesting reading experience. After all an underground sewer is the last place you'd expect to find a hidden Russian base.

-Attraction: This story made me feel sad. I didn't cry, but it still pulled at my heartstrings. Again we have a reoccurring dream setting. The protagonist of the story has been having the same dream of a house for 14 years. And one day she comes across the house on her way home from work. Curiosity kills the cat so she goes inside. And when she does she comes across a door and behind the door is her deceased mother.

-Invasion: This story made me cry towards the end. Big G's death was a hard blow. He spent a year in an army base training to take down supernatural creatures, all he wanted to do was hear his mothers voice again. Only when he's within an inch of death does he get to hear her voice for the first and last time. While he's not the main character of the story, his character was the most developed and therefore I became attached.

I see the potential of some of these stories expanding. I definitely think some things can use a little editing. The grammar needs a bit of fixing here and there, but otherwise I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to see what comes next! If you enjoy a variety of different genres with a bit of thrill, I definitely recommend you read this book.

Thank you to the author for inviting me to read this work via Instagram!

Some of the ideas are good and imaginative, and some need to be significantly more fleshed out. The writing is poor and requires a heavy editing hand to bring it up to standard, unfortunately.

I hope this author keeps writing and exploring his ideas, but if he wants to really flourish he should look into getting an editor to look through his work before publishing.

This is a short story book, comprising of nine such stories. The stories are a little weird; some feel like unfinished business, and some are very dark and touchy. These stories will leave a lot of question marks in the readers' minds, and the readers will want more of them to get a better understanding of the end.

The author's writing is good, though I believe some stories need more polishing and mending, such as stories titled "Underground" and "Perception." I would have really liked it if the author provided more clarity on the characters and the purpose of such stories ending in a particular way.

I really liked the stories titled "Attraction" and "Conspiracy." It felt genuine and had a good ending too. I really feel the author expanded some stories that ended abruptly.

Overall, I believe it's totally up to the readers to interpret the endings of each story. I believe readers with a liking for different genres can definitely pick up this book and have a thrilling experience.

I pride myself on honest reviews. The author contacted me on Instagram and suggested I might enjoy this and I agreed to review it.

Pros
Some great concepts and interesting plots
some twists that I didn't guess
unique and different
dark (which I like)

cons
each story is only around 4 pages and felt like missed a lot of information
Nothing felt explained so I was left confused and wanting anwsers
I feel like this author could be brilliant with the right editor to cut out some repeated info that isn't needed and suggesting where to expand

overall I think this author could be amazing if he wrote longer books with more background and character development. I also think he needs to work on how to make a reader feel engaged with the characters and story.

I will be interested to see where his writing goes as I think with some work he could be great

O.J. Warden reached out to me on instagram and asked if I would be interested in reading their shorts stories. Of course I’m always happy to read new authors to me.

I’m going to start this with saying they are very well written. Each short story in this book is a quick read, and the twists are all unexpected. The stories themselves were full of detail and even though short you didn’t feel like you missed out on any bit of the story. Unfortunately for me (not the author) they aren’t the sort of stories I would sort out for myself to read. This is nothing against the author and his writing because as I have said they are so well written. But they just aren’t for me.

I do hope this author carries on with his writing and continues to grow!

The book is a collection of nine short stories covering a variety of themes. The stories are told both in the first person and third person perspectives and as they are all different I'm sure there will be something for lots of readers to enjoy.

My personal favourite was Conspiracy, as I really liked the world that was described.

Some of the stories have a creepy and unsettling element to them, and remind me almost of a variety of dreams and nightmares. This is a new author and based on the writing on this I'm interested to see what they do next.

If you do enjoy short stories and are looking for a new quick read, this collection is currently free on amazon.

A very quick read, a collection of 9 quirky and interestingly told stories, in about 40 pages most are pretty dark stories.

‘Perception’ in particular was told really well. Horrifying, sad and dark!

I have not read anything like this before, so for me it felt like some stories needed fleshing out, but totally understand that you can’t flesh out stories and call them ‘short stories’ because they wouldn’t be short anymore. There are a few stories with cliff hangers in them and definitely some surprise endings.

It would be nice if some of the stories could be written out in a longer version for instance ‘death’, ’missing’ and ‘attraction’

Nine short dark/horror stories that will keep you awake in the night.

One in particular got me really bad, and it is the one titled Perception.

Until the end I thought about three different possible reasons about what was happening and why, but the truth in the end just punched me on the face really hard!😂

Conspiracy also got me well. It's obviously about the coronavirus but in a way that leave you mouth open and can only think "oh my god".

I think you all should read this book, if you're not too much scared.😏

Firstly I’d like to thank for reaching out to me.

This is a collection of short stories which can be quite dark, it’s less than 100 pages so a super fast read, as someone who struggles to find short stories they enjoy I really did enjoy this anthology.

My favourites were: Underground, Perception, Attraction and Conspiracy, although I found that these would of also made amazing king stories they also made brilliant short stories too. I very much look forward to future releases from this author.

This is a beautiful and thought-provoking selection of short stories written by O.J. Warden.

I do like a good short story, but I have never before felt bereft at finishing the collection. There are some truly wonderful ideas and concepts that really do leave you longing for more.

I also think this will appeal to so many different people, even those who don't often like short stories. There is something for everyone in this collection.

An intriguing collection of nine short stories which let the reader into some darker themes. They are short, snappy and original. The length of the stories definitely makes them easy to read on the go, depending on the reader type you are. This is a new author and looking forward to seeing what they have next.

NB: Death was definitely my favourite!

This was the first book I read of this author and I was hooked from the start.

What we have is a composition of short stories.

What happens when you have a conversation with death?

What happens when you enter a forbidden zone?

What happens when you come face to face with extra terrestrials?

Read to enter a written twilight zone and you wont be disappointed.

If you're looking for...

Short stories that leave you wondering what happens next then these little short stories are for you. Every single one I wanted to ask so what happened next? They are written okay but could do with more depth. This is personal opinion though, I'm sure someone else will love the stories more than I did.

🌟🌟🌟🌟 (4.2)

A collection of nine short stories that leave you feeling pretty much every single emotion and then some! I mean, I was left perplexed, sad, shocked and with so many questions. Fantastic!

What a delicious and somewhat bizarre array of stories. I’m still processing what I’ve just read.

I’ve rated them individually and then got an average. Below is what I gave each story.

💀 Death ~ 4
🚺 Acceptance ~ 3 - but I loved the last line!
🔫 Underground ~ 5
🔪 Perception ~ 5 - ♥️ Favourite
🌏 Missing ~ 4
🏚 Attraction ~ 4
⛔️ Conspiracy ~ 4
🐝 Invasion ~ 5
🤥 Deception ~ 4

Perception is my favourite. It’s so damn clever! My exact words were; sinister, f**ked up, dark, a work of pure genius.

If you love wacky, weird, and shocking stories that can mess with your mind, this is definitely for you.
What’s even better, this is FREE to download now!

Thank you so much, O J Warden, for such a fantastic treat. And thank you, Autumn. If it wasn’t for you, I might never have discovered O. J Warden.

*** SPOILERS ***
******************

I added this book to my TBR pile on the request of the author in exchange for an honest review. Now, I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of short stories. I like something to pull me out of my life and escape for a while. Also most short stories leave me wishing the story was more.

All of that said, short story writing is a true craft & OJW is really quite gifted at it. The aim of a story is to have a beginning, a middle and end. In order to pull this off in short storyland the author has to be snappy about their words.

Whilst this collection is not one I would normally have chosen, I’m glad I agreed to review. I enjoyed the stories within. I do think there needs to be some book etiquette though, publishing details page, contents page etc. I’ve given the collection 4 stars because as short stories, this collection is pretty good. Not my thing really but if you like the short story genre, you’ll like this. My fav one was “Death”. I’d love to see this chronicled as “Death’s Adventures” or similar 🤣☺️

Thank you O.J.Warden for sending me your book!

A collection of 9 short stories which revolve around sci-fi, mystery, horror and darker themes like death and war. Less than one hundred pages so a nice quick read 👀

My favourites are ‘Perception’ and ‘Deception’, but a lot of them end on cliffhangers so they kind of make you think as well which I like 😄 they’re really well written and I’m looking forward to reading whatever you do next O.J.Warden
