Despite being hardworking and ambitious, Andrew has none of them. That is, until his ailing grandmother gives him an amulet that transports him to another dimension in order for him to be trained as a battle mage specializing in summoning monsters.
Once on campus Andrew will quickly make a mark and rise up the class rankings, and before long he’ll have everything he’s ever wanted in this new world and back on Earth.
The author starts this fantasy book series with a sob story of a grandmother having a brain tumor that needed urgent and constant attention, so the main character misses work, urgent work that could not be missed to find something important for his grandmother (an opal necklace). So, main character, Andrew, misses urgent work, to go to Grandma´s home to find the necklace. He finds the necklace, gets teleported to another world and forgets about the Grandmother, her brain tumor, her urgent request to give her the necklace, his urgent need to go to work...etc. etc. WHAT??? DOES THE AUTHOR SUFFER FROM ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder)??? Maybe suffer from amnesia or dementia??? Does the author not read over the stories that he writes??? Who can responsibly say, that leaving a dying Grandmother, penniless and alone in a health/elderly home, out to dry, her brain tumor condition, her urgent need to get the necklace, the urgent need to go to work that day that Andrew had, etc. can be just brushed off by the author/ main character??? So Andrew forgets about his dying Grandmother, forgets about her urgent need of this necklace (that he is using without permission, without rhyme or reason), forgets about his job, his life, his things on Earth, etc...to watch duels and beast/spirit-folk girls in a magic school in another world??? WHAT??? Is the author five years old??? This story lacks cohesion, lacks organization, lacks character description, world description, this book does not have a map of this other world, no character summaries of their abilities or skills, the author urgently needs an editor, needs to prioritize what is important (Grandmother, job, college classes, etc.) to what is irrelevant and ridiculous... Who writes an introduction to a multi-book series and forgets about the introduction??? If that was the objective, then why not make it an orphan, jobless shut-in that finds a portal on the internet, like 99.8% of the stories like this one??? How can the author, publisher, editor, publish a book series started and forgotten like this one??? Andrew, spends the night at Grandma's, then goes back to the fantasy world, participates in a duel, bets 2 x 100 dollar bills in the other world, and wins a bag full of gold coins worth 20,000 dollars... Everything the author states in this book 1 is irrational, illogical and nonsensical. Who would accept bills that do not have any intrinsic value for a bet? How on Earth/or another world, betting 200 dollars gain you 20,000??? Without any martial arts training, any summoning training at all, Andrew has sex and wins duels without any effort or merit.
Spoiler alert: After getting sucked into a portal to the school he finds out that his class is a summoner. He immediately makes two friends and a beautiful but stuck up elf starts raging on him. A minotaur also becomes his nemesis.
It goes down-hill from there. He is on day two of the knowledge that magic exists yet he goes to an illegal fight club were all the fights he sees are to the death. Whats his brilliant idea, I should come back tomorrow and fight here. The next day he spends some time studying and preparing after taking classes all day.
Right!
Then he goes to the club with the elf who seems to have a bratty crush on him. Of course his opponent is the minotaur but he wins the non-lethal match. Then he goes back to earth and sells a large bag of gold to the sketchy pawn broker he saw on a tv ad.
There is also a setup for a war with shadow creatures and an evil mage that none but he can detect. Meanwhile, this genius is looking to go back to the fight club by hunting what everyone says is a very dangerous jackalope. They get the jackalope and it never uses its lightning or other magical assets against them. Really, that is so weak.
I enjoy mage school type coming-of-age fantasy’s but this story is juvenile and the MC is too stupid to be believed. The author’s original summoner series was entertaining and creative but recent works I’ve looked at have been mediocre at best.
Vall, Eric. Summoner School. Kindle, 2022. Eric all is an independently publishing fantasy writer with quite a few books to his credit. He has another series called Summoner, and this YA may or may not be related to it. Vall, who must have a practical bent, says he will write a second book in the series as soon as this one hits 100 reviews on Amazon. If nothing else, Vall has introduced me to a publishing business model I have not seen before. If you want a book with all the fantasy tropes in one place, Summoner School will do. Our first-person narrator, Andrew, is a likeable high school graduate who has put college plans on hold and taken a warehouse job to care for his grandmother who is in a home suffering from brain cancer. The old woman sends him to retrieve an amulet from her attic, which transports him to a school for mages in an alternate universe populated by elves, nymphs, minotaurs, and other magical folk. His roommate is a tree man, his girlfriend is a nymph, his antagonist is a bullyish minotaur (sorry, I could not resist), and his frenemy is a snobbish elf. Some evil is about to return, and his grandmother wants him to fix it. So, yes. Lots of Harry Potter. 3 stars.
This book is boring and pathetic The main character has no sense or purpose about what he's doing and it's like the author doesn't know where to take the story or how to write it..... The main character goes from 1 mishap to the other nothing is ever finalized he keeps saying I'm gonna ask the professor about my amulet I'm gonna ask the professor about my amulet but whenever he does either the professor has something else to do or she says I've gotta do some research I mean come on how long does it take to get to the point with this writer. In a sloppy writing with no sense of purpose the main character should have already figured this stuff out and gotten help from the professors and finished 1 part of the plot line before they moved on to the next come on... If you're going to write a story like this then do an outline instead stick to your script.....
Old folks home, a sick grandma, unknown heritage, college and illegal battle rings? Let’s not forget magical women each of different species from human all mixed into a big pot of mystery and conspiracy theories. Couldn’t put down the first book to Eric Vall’s new series! It might turn into my second or third favorite series by this author. Our main character Andrew will have a lot of things to figure out, but he’s not alone with his rag tag new friends (one being a tsundra who may become one of his lovers)! His roommate a Tree Man full of surprises, a bubbly touchy feelly dryad, and an well connected elf woman who begrudgingly tries not to hold his humanness against him! Can’t wait to see what this Summoner and his friends get up too!
The story was interesting but as stated above not done well, or at least not as well as Vall's previous works. There were gaps in information, mainly about location: the characters would be talking in one place and then magically be in another place without a transition. It made the book feel like a game with severe fps drops. I know Vall is a better author than this as I really enjoy some of his other series and I hope he will put a bit more effort into the next volume.
Eric Vall is the master when it comes to summoning magic, and his new book series is off to an intriguing and promising start with plenty of action and adventure.
And two gorgeous fellow students with an interest in the new Human summoner and a teacher with an avid interest in him.
It's going to be a blast to see where this series takes the readers! Looking forward to a second book already!
Andrew's family has a secret that only shows up every other generation that changes his life forever
Andrew Hall is a normal human taking care of his grandma in a nursing home with a brain tumor an working in a warehouse to pay her medical bills . A family heirloom that his grandma request that he bring to her immediately an when he touches it he is sent to different relm automatically . recommend reading excellent new series .
I have mixed feelings about this book. The idea is interesting and I want to like it but the MC is hopeless. Knowing absolutely nothing about what's going on around him doesn't stop him from being arrogant and boastful that he'll be the best ever seen at... whatever it is they're talking about? He's incredibly stupid for someone so smart. Between this book and the first half of the second (which I likely won't finish) he has a habit of noticing things that are likely important and/or relevant to the story, thinking to himself that he should ask his professor or someone about it, then promptly ignoring it. If he'd actually followed up on things like this the series would likely be a lot shorter. There's also the insane risks he takes, and somehow scrapes out of without injury. I do like his friends though - his tree roommate is pretty cool, as is his bubbly girlfriend. Overall this felt like a story with potential ruined by a crappy MC.
I enjoyed reading this book. The story and characters were interesting and engaging. There are some parallels between this story and the author's other summoner series. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. Hopefully, this series will be as long and as entertaining as the others. This book is definitely worth reading.
Love this story, it's got great character building and just really well written. Although there's terms that are little overused like "and we kissed until we couldn't breath" used over and over again, but not so much you get sick of it. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves magic and isekai
This is the start of another great series from this author for sure! Nice MC development with a good back round set up! Can't wait for the next one to come out!
I had a lot of fun reading this new book from Eric Vall. Characters were great, magic system made sense. The only issue I had was pacing, it definitely felt a little rushed at times but still enjoyed the hell out of the story.
This is an incredibly exciting new series, the world and characters within are fascinating! The elements of mystery and suspenseful action make this a phenomenal read and I eagerly await the next in the series!
Interesting series with a wide array of characters. Takes Minotaur to an entirely new level. The story has a main arc that always leaves you wanting more. Couldn’t put it down.
Eric Vall is definitely my favorite author as long as you include his other pen names. This book is a great read with a good story base. I am definitely interested in book 2 when it comes out.
Honestly, Eric Vall is always worth the read! Great characters and great diversity. Plus having just barely giving a look at the big bad of the series and working up to it perfectly. Recommend read!
It's almost refreshing how the MC acts like how a normal person would react to a situation that is paranormal in nature. He adjusts as he goes along, and each...being? Have unique personalities.
Story worth reading if you like a gradual build up to the sex.
Fun, noble MC? Check. Interesting plot with a steady build up? Check. Strong supporting characters (both good and bad)? Check. Am I anxious to read the next book? Check. Check. Check!
This book is very interesting reading. It keeps the pages turning and looking for the next happening. Andrew is an interesting character. Can't wait to read more about his adventures.
Solid book, enjoyed the story. Picked it because there were multiple books, I read this one in about 24 hours. Go to start the next in the series and it’s not on kindle unlimited. Felt bait and switch.
Love the first book I have read all of this authors summoner themed series and this one looks to be just as good. I am already looking forward to the second book.
Enjoyed it. Seems an interesting concept. MC is likable enough, and the supporting cast is rich and varied. Looking forward to where the author takes the story.
