Country music icon, army veteran, father, outdoorsman—Craig Morgan shares all aspects of his life, revealing stories even his most avid fans don’t know. Written with Jim DeFelice, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller American Sniper In 1989, as US news outlets declared an end to Operation Just Cause, Craig Morgan was part of an elite group of military operatives jumping into the jungle along the Panamanian border on a covert operation. Fans know the country music star from his hit songs and acclaimed albums, but there’s a lot more to him—a soldier who worked with the CIA in Panama, an undercover agent who fought sex traffickers in Thailand, and a dedicated family man who lives the values he sings. Craig details these many facets of his life and more in God, Family, Country . An on-stage appearance with his father’s band at age ten may have planted the seeds for life as a country star, but first he trained as a paratrooper in the army. After earning numerous distinctions, his path to sergeant major was all but assured. Then came a momentous he left the active military to pursue music. With unwavering support from his wife and a pack of part-time jobs, he toughed out the lean years and achieved his first big success with the poignant ballad “Almost Home.” Other hits soon followed, from party songs like “Redneck Yacht Club” to the soul-rending “The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost.” Born from the anguish of his son Jerry’s passing, the song’s tribute has consoled and inspired millions across the world. Duty to country has been a constant throughout his life and globe-spanning career. In 2006, as “That’s What I Love about Sunday” topped country radio charts, Craig was riding in a convoy of Humvees in Iraq. An avid outdoorsman, a former sheriff’s deputy who’s still a member of the auxiliary, and always a husband and father first, Craig Morgan will inspire you with his life lived by the deepest God, family, country.
Alexa, add every Craig Morgan country hit to my playlist. This book shares with you the whole life of country singer, Craig Morgan. Stories from his time in the military, as a song writer, husband, father, musician, what it was like losing his son & life after all the fame.
👏🏽 I learned so much about Craig & I love that he shared SO much about what it’s like being a singer writer & musician. He really gives you all the details- about the record company, radio plays. I loved it! I feel like I learned so much.
Also, when he shares about the song Father, My son & the Holy Ghost I became a puddle on the floor. 😭I had to go watch his Opery performance & was totally moved. What a powerful song & moment.
Craig is a down to earth guy & you’ll see this in his book.
👎🏼 I think this book would have been a better audio book, IMO. There were times it didn’t seem like some of the sentences flowed- but it probably would have sounded better if I listened to it. 😏 Let Me Persuade You: go and listen to this book STAT. I promise you will go and add all his song to your playlist because you forgot how AMAZING they were. I haven’t stopped listening to them since. 😍 Favorite Quote: “We’re all like that, maybe. Happy and deeply sad, fun, and more than a little down—it’s the human condition. That’s why certain songs touch people so hard.”
Thank you Netgalley, Blackstone Publishing & Craig Morgan for giving me this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a wonderful book that felt more like a conversation than reading a book. Throughout the book, the author was interesting, insightful, and real. His story, and his path to music stardom, was non-traditional and filled with twists and turns. Prior to reading this, I had no idea that he had a military career prior to pursing music, or the variety of jobs he held prior to his success.
The author shared deeply personal thoughts and events in such a way that it felt like I was listening to a friend, not reading a star's memoir. As a Nashville resident, I remember when his son died - I cried for him while watching the news coverage. The author shared his grief and experiences while processing his loss. The song he wrote, "The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost" is poignant and heartbreaking to listen to and I can't even imagine the pain he felt writing it.
This is a must read for fans of the author. His story is complex and both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Anyone who appreciates country music will want to put this on their TBR list.
I picked this book up on my way out of The Association of the US Army conference in DC, September 2022. Unbeknownst to me earlier I had been casually chatting with Craig as we both admired a new sniper rifle that was on display. I didn’t know he was a celeb, just a good guy and former high-speed, low-drag fellow soldier. It wasn’t until weeks later when I read the book that I learned about his career and connected him to many of his songs I’ve enjoyed over the years. Surprisingly, his book encouraged me as recently I’ve been concerned that too many military personnel and veterans are being radicalized. But to hear him share his beliefs and commitment to faith, family, music and country gave me peace of mind in that regard. Thanks for that Craig. If you’re reading this, I sure would have loved to sing with you as members of The US Army Soldier Show when we were both in uniform. My command let me go, but yours didn’t cause you were likely just too good at your job! God speed brother.
What wonderfully open look into one of Country Music's biggest stars. Through the military, his early music writing days in Nashville and the heart break of losing a son, Craig's story is one of passion, love and faith. I heartily recommend this as a great read/listen.
God, Family, Country Soldier, Singer, Husband, Dad - There's a Whole Lot More to Me by: Craig Morgan and Jim DeFelice print book: Blackstone Publishing audiobook: Blackstone Publishing-Audiobooks genre: Biographies & Memoirs, Nonfiction (Adult)
Full of personal stories about his family, military service, and musical career, Craig Morgan's memoir is authentic and very enjoyable. The book details a surprisingly fascinating and intimate account of Morgan's interesting life. Morgan and DeFelice as a team write in a completely compelling and relatable style. As a music lover of many genres, including country, I often read memoirs of musicians to learn the stories behind the stages and songs. I like Morgan's meaningful and down to earth songs about real life, and love his performance of That's What I Love About Sunday. Morgan takes readers through the exuberant highs and heartbreaking lows of his life. He goes deep into his roots in Nashville, Tennessee and his service in the Army around the world. The well-paced story is also one of falling in love, marriage, and building a family. He shares his faith, hobbies of hunting, fishing, and motorcycle riding, as well as an exciting transition to a country music career. The glimpse into his writing of one particular song brought me to tears. All of these components add up to a riveting memoir! Audiobook Notes: Listening to Morgan narrate his story on audiobook makes it an even more personalized and intimate look at his interesting life. Thank you to Net Galley and Blackstone Publishing and Blackstone Publishing Audiobooks for both the advance copy and audiobook and opportunity to provide my unbiased reviews.
Our family knew it shared similar values with Craig Morgan, so we were excited to read more about his choices and reactions during the life he's lived. I shared this with our 15-year-old son who reads a lot of military non-fiction, and it got his stamp of approval as well. I did find the tempo of the story slowed when going through the list of his music. It is important but didn't seem woven-in as well. Thank you, Craig and Jim, for writing about one of the good guys.
I did not know a thing about this famous country artist. Obviously, he has written and performed a number of iconic country tunes that have impacted many people for years. The song "The Father, My Son, And the Holy Ghost" stemmed from his tragic loss of their adoptive son, Jerry. It goes to show the power of music in people's lives. He has had so many experiences that relate to so many people and is a true patriot. There are a few pictures scattered throughout that help tell his story as well.
I knew nothing about Craig Morgan. I'm not a fan of country music so I'd really never heard of him. However, he's performing at a venue where I serve as an usher so I was curious about him. Now I can't wait for him to get here! He quickly became one of my heroes. You'll want to read this book and get to know this true patriot.
I have always found Craig Morgan fascinating. To listen to his words about his life — military life, civilian life /‘d country music star life — was eye opening! He is a true patriot, a kind human being, and a devoted Christian. He loves his family and even tells of the loss of his son, Jerry, just a few years ago and how that loss affected his life. Truly remarkable person!
Craig Morgan brings us to a better time in the history of America. Descriptive situations of his childhood, family life and ways God shined light on him through the years opens the reader's hearts and eyes to the important things, and brings the focus on God--because He ultimately was the root of all good in Craig Morgan's life.
Reading this places you back to a simple time and reveals how Craig's talents were so obvious that he was able to hit the Country charts without any modern technology or social media. Though wisdom, faith, prayer, patience, and learning what not to do through the mistakes of others, Craig Morgan gained momemtum in his career, family, and life. This man is more than just a guy that sings, and his story is more than music.
From childhood to military service, medals of honor, to mission trips, to celebrity meet, The Grand Ole Opry, and even encounters with a wolf, Craig remains close to God, family and country through it all.
Country singer Craig Morgan is much more than just a singer. He was a paratrooper who participated in a covert operation in Panama while working with the CIA, worked as an undercover agent against sex traffickers in Thailand and more. Interestingly he writes about being on the 2022 CBS reality show, "Beyond the Edge" and what drives him to push himself so hard. But despite being a star, the quality that shines through in this memoir is that fact that Craig is a family man, through and through. Craig Morgan writes eloquently about how he wrote the song, "The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost," which he wrote after his son Jerry drowned in a boating accident. (which he has a hard time performing) Above all readers will read about the resiliency of a man who has experienced much in his life, yet remains humble and who lives by the values that guides him: God, Family and Country.

💭Thoughts: I really enjoy this audiobook. Craig Morgan narrates it himself, which is always my favorite. I’ve seen Craig in concert several times and enjoy his music. I think that helped me enjoy the audiobook more than if I wasn’t familiar with him. He comes across as a genuinely kind person who fiercely loves his family, his God, and his country. I learned a lot about his military career that I’d never heard about before.
Some of the stories are a bit disjointed and don’t flow well, but I think that’s common in the memoirs of musicians I’ve read in the past.
The most powerful story he told was about the loss of one his children. He wrote a song related to the loss and wow, it had me sobbing. I just can’t imagine that pain.
Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys memoirs, country music, and/or Craig Morgan.
QOTD: Do you like country music? If not what type of music do you enjoy?
I like country music, but I’m a fan of lots of different genres of music!
As a country music fan, I picked this due to familiarity with Morgan's music.
When selecting a memoir, I never expect salacious details and didn't find any here. If that's what you're looking for, you won't find it here. Craig focused on his army career, family, and music. He wove various military experiences throughout even after completing several chapters on his time in uniform. He discussed his work on TV and his various show appearances.
All in all it was ok. The stories flowed well and made sense. The last couple of chapters felt disjointed to me. It was like he was writing to fill a page with little substance. For example, he titles one of the sections in a chapter, "Next". To me that meant he was going to discuss what comes next for him. He kind of did but almost as an after thought at the very end of that section.
He did spend a chapter talking about the loss of his son and how that prompted him to write a song to help with the grief. Morgan also discussed how hard it is to perform the song mentally.
I love when artist and celebrities show us behind the scenes and get down to the nitty gritty of what it takes to make it to the fame level. Success in the music or even film industry doesn't happen overnight. They struggle, they sacrifice, they put in 110%, they get told no more than yes, but they keep showing up until one day it all works out. I love the dedication and determination folks like Craig Morgan have to go for what they want and achieve it even in the hardest of times. They're regular people just like us, most don't forget where they came from. Craig stays true to himself, his family, his faith, and everything in between. I enjoyed getting an inside peek to the Craig Morgan we all know and love from his music. The chapter about Jerry is enough to rip your heart out, but as a fellow foster/adoptive parent I'm so thankful he had all those years to know true family and love before God called him home!
Thank you Netgalley for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
I love this autobiography by Craig Morgan. He tells about his early life and his military life. He goes into his musical career and discusses his albums and singles that he has published. He talks about who helped write his songs and how he wrote some of his songs. He talks about his family and their lives together. This is a very interesting story of his life. He shares so many things with his fans, He talks about how hard it is to get into the music business and how to stay in it and make it work for you. I love how he seems to have opened the doors and let us into his life. His life has not been easy but he never lost faith and carried on doing what he thought was right for his family and his band members. He talks about how he loves to sing to sold out shows but he also loves to sing to small venues. He likes to connect with the fans. I think that this book shows a side of Craig that we all knew existed. He is very thankful for all that he has and loves his family.
Want to know what it's like to dislocate your shoulder by hitting the ground from 20 feet in the air because the distance from your chopper to the ground was misjudged? ...or what it's like to hear a song you WROTE on the radio for the first time? ...or hear a song you RECORDED on the radio for the first time? How about finding out that the "rookie private" you just called out for refusing to identify himself is a two-star general?
I could keep this list up for several pages - or you could just read Craig Morgan's wild ride of an autobiography "God, Family, Country," and experience a life story that really does resemble a parachute jump from several thousand feet up. A lot of sweat, a few tears and a little blood, make up this small town boy, turned Soldier, turned country music icon, turned grieving father's, tale - one you should not miss.
Great read about Country star Craig Morgan's Life, Including his Military & reserves Career which was very interesting even including a Bon Jovi mention, His prior jobs held before becoming a Country singer/songwriter and his family life including his wife and Children. Very sad about him losing one of his sons a such a young age. Also mentions about him being on the reality show Beyond the edge in which he faced challenges and endured tough conditions to raise money for his Operation Finally Home charity. He is very charitable in his life and I admire his undercover work toward stopping human trafficking with Exodus road. He is a genuine family Christian man and I have been a fan of his music and have even been honored to met him twice.
I have always been a huge fan of Craig Morgan's music. This book gave me a true appreciation of not just Craig Morgan the musician, but also Craig Greer the soldier, father, and patriot.
This book is certainly not a literary masterpiece. It is written in a very conversational manner. However, I did enjoy the writing style. It felt very true to Craig Morgan's style.
Craig Morgan is so much more than "just a musician." I was fascinated by his military background, familial struggles, and his journey into the music world. It was inspiring to hear how he dealt with the loss of his son and continues to push forward today.
I highly recommend this book to all country music fans! I certainly have more appreciation for his music.
God, Family, Country is an insightful, interesting and intimate look at portions of Craig Morgan's life. I have an added respect for him after reading it.
I have seen Craig Morgan in concert and am a fan of his music so I was definitely interested in this book. I love that he is the narrator, it makes it all the more personal. I also loved the snippets of his songs bookending the chapters. Very nice touch.
I'd highly recommend it to any country music/Craig Morgan fan.
I received a free copy of this audiobook via Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions are my own.
God, Family, Country, Soldier, Singer, Husband, Dad...... what more to life does one need? This was a very enjoyable and candid story of Craig Morgan’s life. His son, Jerry lived a full life despite Craig’s losing his son at such a young age. Parents should not have to lose their children but the tribute to his son is very touching. The song touches my heart especially since I lost my brother in 1977. This book is a keeper and I will read the book again because of the reaffirming faith this family has.
God, Family, Country by Craig Morgan is based on Craig's life as a soldier and entertainer. He shares a lot around his early years and what it was like before he made it big. He talks about the music business and things that the average listener wouldn't know. I enjoyed reading about his days in the military and his love for our country. He also explained his song writing process. He did jump around quite a bit but for the most part it was pretty easy to follow. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion.
I don’t even remember how I came across this book, but I am glad I did! I nerd out on music and I like listening to memoirs and autobiographies, especially ones from my favorite music artists. I can confidently say that after listening to this, I would like to be Craig Morgan’s friend. Holy cow, he is so cool. From his military career, to moving into the music industry… to navigating incredible fame, happiness and immense personal loss. The faith he has in our Lord and Savior is enormous and it was refreshing to hear. 10/10 for sure!!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book for an honest review. I love celebrity books and I especially love this one because every time Red Neck Yacht Club my husband and I turn up the sound! This book is so inspirational and reading all about the authors successes and sadness - totally recommend!!
Saw Craig Morgan in concert (small venue) and had bought the book hoping for a signature. Well, I got the signature, loved the music and hearing some of the stories. There was so much I didn't know about Craig but the book gave me a good look into his life and why he lives like he does. The book expanded on the great stories behind the music. Enjoyed getting to know about him.
I hate to say this but...half of this book is about his military experiences, which, after a while, I got bored with it. When he finally wrote about his music experiences I found it a lot more interesting. I was not that familiar with Craig before reading the book, although I've heard some of his songs. I think true fans will love this.
I’ve been a fan since his early songs on the radio. I now have a new appreciation of him as he shared his life in the military, his life as a family man, and his devotion to God. This book is interesting, funny, and full of emotions. It left me wanting to know more. Thank you for your service, Craig.
This is not a literary masterpiece. It is slow in parts and written the way the author speaks, like he’s telling a story to a friend. It’s the story itself that is powerful and moving. I’ve always liked Craig Morgan’s music, but now I have a profound respect for Craig Greer, the dad, solider, and citizen who happens to play songs I like.
So good! I think the reason why I liked this book so much is because I agree with him. I like the way he thinks! I also love country music and his songs! I was in the Army so obviously I enjoyed the part about his military service. I admire the way he unabashedly shares his love of Jesus Christ and Our Heavenly Father.
