The situation in Gaea has never been worse, but amid the chaos and carnage are glimmers of hope. Stronger as individuals and as a team than ever before, Lia, Tyler, Coen, and Cassedia aren’t waiting for Samael and Achlaya to bring the fight to them.
With the team’s immediate priority recovering the sapphire that will magnify Tyler’s newfound abilities and their wider focus on bringing Samael’s endgame crashing down around him, the stakes—and the pressure—have never been higher.
But with their enemy seemingly evolving faster than they can, recovering the sapphire may be an insurmountable—and unsurvivable—challenge. And when the ash settles after this firefight, it’s anyone’s guess who will still be standing.
The unputdownable sequel to Resistance , the well-received first novel in C.E. Ord’s YA fantasy adventure series Of Ember and Flame, Ruin will have you burning the midnight oil as Lia, Tyler, Coen, and Cassedia fight for Gaea, and for their lives.
Fortunate and so thankful to be living a life that turned out better than anything I could have ever written. Happily raising two epic main characters with my leading man. Writing into the wee hours most nights, inspired by the beautifully broken chaos of this hurtling, spectacular catastrophe called life, and the power of words to move us. Fueled mostly by Diet Coke, chocolate, and the promise of sleep one day. Wouldn’t have any of it any other way.

Book two in the Of Ember and Flame series continues the story of Lia and Tyler and newfound friends Cassedia and Coen as they fight for their lives. Gaea is in serious trouble and the team needs to find the sapphire that will multiply Tyler's powers. But the enemy hasn't stopped, and Samuel is still a threat to all of them. When the battle ends, no one knows who will be victorious.
When I read book one, Resistance, I knew the author had a home run when it came to their world building. They continued adding to Gaea, painting a great picture of this world in peril that Lia and Tyler need to save.
Besides the world building, the plot was fascinating, giving an almost dystopian-fantasy feel as the book progresses. The action was there throughout the book, and I never found myself skimming or losing interest in any portion of the book.
Lia and Tyler have progressed quite a bit as characters since book one. Lia was the centerpiece in Resistance and now it seems like Tyler is finally getting his moment in the spotlight in Ruin. His powers are what everyone is loving in this book, so he gets a little more, much needed attention that he didn't get in book one. This is where we finally see him have a character arc like Lia did, and it was brilliant.
HOLY MOLY. I LOVE LOVE LOVED this book IT was a masterpiece, and a joy to write. I need more. I read the first book when it came out, and am so privileged to have received an arc for the second one. I cannot wait to get myself a physical copy when this is officially released. Absolutely amazing 4.5/5 stars from me
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a very strong and exciting sequel! The story was action packed and was gripping. I could not put this book down and the character development was incredible. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this tale because this plot is a breath of fresh air.
Thank you so much for letting me read this! I have been waiting for the sequel, I don't think I could have waited for the release date. I NEEDED to know what would happen. I will not spoil anything for anyone but WOW. Worth the wait completely.
PLOT This book is a continuation of the Of Ember and Flame (book 1 called Resistance) in which Lia and Tyler, two young orphaned teenagers discover they have a connection to a parallel earth and end up there fighting for the survival of the world.
INFO As the previous book, I found this book to be written for younger YA fans (perhaps even categorising it as middle grade). It's quite a short read but I admit it took me a while to read because I kept putting it down and picking it back up - but you could likely read in a short couple of hours depending on your reading speed!
It continued from the cliffhanger of book 1 in a way that I found almost as though it was a conversation split in half actually!
CONSTRUCTIVE CRITIQUES
I enjoyed this book but I do have a few small things picking at my brain. I found that this was very much lacking in dialogue, instead focusing on describing what was happening, with full pages of description without a single line spoken by any of the characters.
Another difficulty in this book was the fact it was told entirely by one character's perspective (Lia) until it switched quite abruptly at the end [no spoilers as to why] - had the book been dual POV all the way though, I think that would have massively improved my reading experience as I truly didn't get much of Coen or Tyler for example and they barely said a few sentences each in the entire book. In order to understand them as characters in their own right I think either a POV from them or more dialogue would have been beneficial.
This next one is an incredibly minor rant but is about a spoiler - placed below a cut if you're interested
POSITIVES The writing itself was very descriptive so I could feel as though I was in the locations mentioned, and could understand Lia's experiences through her thoughts. I found the action scenes were well written and the characters themselves have a lot of potential, as does the world that the author has built. I look forward to reading the next installment, especially after the way this book ended (a REALLY interesting cliffhanger, and the ending really helped me round up from a 2.5 up to a 3 instead!)
I was provided with a complimentary ARC of this novel by the author in exchange for an honest review, which I leave voluntarily.
