Sometimes breaking the rules might be a good thing.
My reputation as a rule breaker is more than deserved, but being sent to The Shadow Institute for protecting those I love still feels like an unjust punishment. At least once a year, I can't help sneaking off to visit The Den, a supernatural nightclub. The usual fights among supernatural attendees are always expected, but this time the risk is more than I bargained for. This time it puts my baby sister, Elena, in danger. As my boyfriend Tate and I face our toughest task yet—to save Elena's life—discoveries will be made that will change everything we thought we knew about our world.

I really enjoyed the characters and the story for this! I wish this was longer but I do plan to read the series it’s connected to now in hopes of getting more details on these characters! Quick read for me that I really liked!
To be honest I skimmed at first then lost interest. There's some errors but you'll be able to overlook them if you can stay interest in the book. For being a short read you would think the book would go somewhere but it doesn't.
This story is filled with a lot of action. There is never a dull moment. There is tremendous amount of adventure packed in this novella. The main characters are currently residing in what would be considered a group home for troubled and misbehaving super naturals. They need to be reformed in order to be able to return to society. They certainly do not want the humans finding out about them, which is why they are here to learn to behave and learn control. While out for a celebration all heck breaks loose and the non-stop escapades begin from there. This story is filled with remarkable and troubled characters. Add in a little mystery, some science experimentation, and a bit of steamy romance and you have this wonderful little novella. Worth the read. I received this story as an ARC and am leaving an honest review.
In the Black Forest in Germany. Vampires are sent to the Shadow Institute, werewolves, and wolf-shifters to the Lunar Institute, witches, and warlocks to the Institute of Leather Jackets. The Society’s leader is Ludwig of Bavaria; he was known as the Swan King before he became a vampire.
Jax is a hot-headed Vampire looking for trouble, and Tate is the cool calm vampire always calling Jax down, one way or another 🌶🌶🌶. This book has good spice.
The love she has for her sister (Elena)and best friend( Tate) lands her in the institute. When attending the solstice Jax's sister is hit with a poison bullet by a hunter. Jax and Tate have to enter the hunter's compound to get the cure, but what they find is shocking. Great character development, fast-paced supernatural loved it.
Tate, Jax and her sister Elena are vampires living at the Shadow Institute. They are there because Jax killed some people who saw her sister as a vampire. Jax had to protect her sister and get rid of the witnesses. At the institute Jax and Tate (who was Jax's childhood friend and now her lover) are trying hard to behave so the aren't sent to the Rectory for punishment. They are at the Den, a supernatural nightclub, when Elena is shot by a hunter. They find out the bullet was poisoned and they begin their quest for the antidote, but during the quest secrets are revealed that will change their future. Very interesting world. I look forward to reading other books in the series.
Beyond the Shadows is a novella based in the same world as the author's book The Awakening. We meet Tate and James, two vampires sent to The Institute to be rehabilitated for bad behavior against ordinaries (humans).
There's quite a bit of action packed into this novella, which I loved. Many novellas focus on building a story to a bigger novel, without giving much action for the reader to be interested in. But this author gave us not only an interesting story and insight into the world they've created, but also gave us excitement and something to get excited about.
This isn't your typical romance - boy meets girl, they fall in love, they face challenges, etc. No, this couple has been together for YEARS and are still madly in love with each other. This is more of a character journey for the FMC - learning that not all rule breaking is for sport - and for the MMC -learning the truth of who - and what - he is. The story's pace is fast, as it takes place over 2-3 days, at max.
If you've never read J.A. Roles before, this is a great introduction to her work. This is a definite re-read for me later.
Loved this book!! I enjoyed her other book the awakening and this one picked up 2 characters from it. It was an easy read and sucked me in from the start. I can't wait to read more of this story line.
This novella is very good. Fast paced, danger, intrigue, plot twists, steam and a HEA- all ingredients for an absorbing story. Our author's imagination gives us great character development and descriptions of locations. The rehab center that Jax, Tate and Elena are in is creepy cool. I felt like I was with them wherever they were. There were characters that made you mad, that made you smile, those you want to comfort and some you're so glad they get there just rewards. A page turner that will leave you wanting more.
This is my first book by this author. I will definitely read more. I enjoyed this book!! I love stories about vampires- this one was amazing. It had some twists and turns that kept it very different from other stories. It keeps you on your toes. The characters had great chemistry, the writing was done well, the plot had good pacing, and there was spice! 🥵🔥
A little bit of everything wrapped up in this little book ! Fast paced and straight to the point. One thing after another, emotions, feelings, thoughts and steamy moments all throughout. There was some action and some aha movements that I did not see coming. It kept me engaged the whole time, I did not know it was part of a series so now I need to go back and read the first one !
I love love loved it! I'm new to this author but I'm definitely going to read the rest of her books in the near future❤️ Those of you that just skim-read books, shame on you. I feel like everyone should read this author's writing❤️ Much, much, much love! 😘❤️ All the feels and yes, I mean all🤭🥵❤️ I hope everyone goes and gets all of the books, all of them, nowwwww! ❤️
I loved this book! It was quick easy read, which their was never a boring moment. It follows Jax and her boyfriend Tate two vampires who get sent to an institute along with Jax's little sister. Overall a great read with a HEA
I liked the characters and the steamy scenes in this supernatural novella. The constant action made for a quick and easy read. Although there were a few grammical errors throughout the book, it was still enjoyable.
I don't normally read paranormal books but this one was so good!! Some very steamy scenes as well ... I can see myself telling others about this book...
Beyond the Shadows is a spin-off novella from J.A. Roles's supernatural book The Awakening. The book introduces us to Jax and Tate, two vampires who have been banished to the Shadow Institue, a rehabilitation center for badly behaved supernaturals, for not playing nice with humans (ordinaries). The institute is governed by The Society, the rulers of the supernatural world. If a supernatural commits wrongdoing against a human or another supernatural, they are hunted down by the society and sent to an institute. Jax and Tate are two vampires that are very much in love and will do anything to protect each other. Jax has a little sister, Elena, who is also a vampire and is also in the institute, mainly because of her relationship with her older sister Jax who is sworn to protect her after the death of their parents. On the night of the Summer Solstice Celebration, supernaturals are tested by mingling with humans and other supernatural beings to see if they could get along. Jax and Tate decide to leave the celebration and go to a secret party at a supernatural nightclub called The Den. Of course, Elena and her boyfriend just happen to be there too. All is going along great until the nightclub is attached by supernatural hunters and Elena is shot with a poison bullet and her condition becomes critical. Jax and Tate are determined to track down the hunter's command post, retrieve the poison's antidote, and save Elena. The story is action-packed, well-written, and flowed effortlessly. This is a supernatural thriller so expect violent, bloody battles, although nothing that would stop me from reading. The sex scenes between Jax and Tate were graphicly described as well. I enjoyed the story and the interactions between the characters and would recommend this novella to anyone who enjoys the supernatural genre.
The word building was a bit slow but other than that the book was great. Jax and Tate compliment each other Jax the hot head and Tate just plain chill. Who would have thought hunters would be so close to their institute and then having the leader betray them. The surprise in this book was pretty cool for Tate to discover. I would definitely recommend this book.
I want to start by saying J.A Roles has a lot of potential especially in fiction supernatural writing. I love the ideas and thought displayed throughout this story, I personally believe a few things should be considered when she is writing her next story! *I’ve added specific page numbers and explanations as to what and why I think it should be written differently.* Page 15 The sex scene was somewhat cringy to me not so much in the way it was written but I didn’t like the characters dialogue throughout. I do understand every author has their own way of writing and to each their own!
Page 16 More details needed. The following paragraph is the way the author wrote the scene vs what would could have been added.
I manoeuvred from tree to tree, following the shuffle of the hunter’s footsteps. A sharp thud on the forest floor gave away his position. I dropped hard from the treetops and settled on top of him. “Who sent you?” I gripped his shirt. “Please don’t hurt me.” He spit dirt. *My edit* I maneuver from tree to tree following the shuffle of the hunter’s footsteps. I could see the huntsman below running as he looks behind him repeatedly attempting to out run us. Little does he know I’ve never been outran. A sharp thud on the forest floor gives away his position. I watch as as he trips over a tree stump and tumbles to the ground. I dropped down from the tree directly on top of him. “Who sent you?” I ask gripping the collar of his shirt and pulling him toward me. “Please don’t hurt me.” He manages to stutter spitting dirt from his trembling lips.
Ex Page 16 I like to feel connected to the characters while I’m reading & when authors create a style of writing where I feel like I’m doing everything along with the characters it enthralls me deeper into the story. The writing in this book made it hard for me to connect in that way because everything was in past tense.
Page 17 I did really like that the hunters can not be scented by the supernaturals. It added an element of danger to beings that are not know for being killed easily!
Page 25 “I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt anyone. I wanted to show my Pops I was worth something. He always treats me like I’m not worthy of his love.” He continued to sob. - This is not realistic. A kid would never say this. I get the impression the author wants to give but I wish it was done differently.
Page 26 Tate turned his head to face him, whilst still pinning me up against the wall. I knew I could shake him off if I needed to, but I guess I was glad Tate held me back. I knew I’d regret hurting an eleven-year-old. The door flew open. It was Gaz. “Sorry, I couldn’t stop her.” Elena burst into the room behind him. “Jax. I don’t. Feel too good.” Her legs wobbled beneath her. - You would think after being told her sister was shot with a poison laced bullet she would only be thinking about finding her sister and possibly the cure to help her sister. I think the author is moving too quickly the story line feels rushed. Also it doesn’t seem realistic that her sister would bust through the door saying she doesn’t feel good and fall to the floor. I think Jax should have went to look for her sister and find her somewhere or someone comes into the room and tells her something is wrong with Elena, this seems more reasonable.
Page 32 “You’re pissing me off, do one, Hazel,” Tate snapped. “Not what you said when you said in those text messages,” - What? Not sure if the authors first language is English. Maybe she’s not American. The way some things are phrased are odd to me as an American.
I am somewhat conflicted about the storyline. The author makes it seem like a prison, but also it feels like a high school. I also wish there was more descriptions of inside the institute.
Page 87 “He will be brought to the Society. A hybrid is a rarity. I’m sorry Tate, but he’s too dangerous to be let loose right now.” -Tate is told his father is too danger but two paragraphs later they drive the van directly to Tate and open it so he can speak to his father… this feels too rushed. - The sound of gravel kicking up and tyres rolling came from around the corner. Another prison van stopped in front of the Institute. The back doors swung open. Sitting behind the metal frame of the cage was a man. “Father?” Tate’s voice broke and tears trickled down his cheeks. - The author could have opened this up for a second book or made this 99 page book longer. Where Tate and Jax have to find and save Tates father as well as Ryan & Ben or at least made sure they are in-fact safe with their mother. “Tyres” so I’m assuming the author is British, this explains why some of the dialect is foreign to me.
Page 91
“Gaz doesn’t want to leave. He’s one of the few medical students with experience. And I won’t leave Gaz. I really want to do medicine and I’ll learn from the best.” - I do love that Elena has decided to stay and learn medicine, this is also a chance to make another book about Elena & Gaz’s relationship at the Institute, learning magic and helping other supernaturals. I’d love that.
Page 93 Actually loved this scene! Definitely was giving Elena and Damon Vampire Diaries vibes!
Page 95 I decided to shower and wash away the Institute. The cool water caressed my body. - This is one of those times where I’m expecting more details. It feels rushed & again there is past tense.
*My edit* I decide to shower and wash away the Institute. I pull myself from the bed and Tate’s muscular arms. I make my way into the bathroom and undress before stepping into the shower. The cool water caresses my body.(I did not use past tense).
Page 99 Tate and I smiled at each other, and together, we took our first steps of freedom as we went beyond the shadows. - Love that they ended up together, happy & leaving the institute. I would have loved an epilogue of them finding a home together getting settled in and maybe even a visit back to the institute a few weeks to a year later to visit Elena.

Interesting story that kept me reading. I picked the book ip from a Stuff Your Kindle event and am thankful I chose this one. I would recommend and I plan on buying other books by this author in the future. I really felt the character Jax was developed to the point that I hope to read about her again in the future.
This kinda felt a little immature Like no matter what situation they got into, they always came out on top with out any real effort. Got captured and surrounded by many hunters with guns and weapons? No problem, we will just take them all out without getting hurt or anything happening and they all go down! Tied up to a chain? No problem - I'll just demand the evil guy who tied us up to untie me - and guess what HE DOES! The threats and everything that was said was just way too immature or not really any conviction or believable. The Hazel chick - the stuff going on with her was just like wth - and how the boyfriend - Whatever his name was just ALWAYS managed to have some information to handle any situation.. where did they get the USB and all this information ? How did he have time to contact the Lugwick guy when he is supposed to be in Vampire jail? Like - wth. How did he figure out the stuff with Hazel and the other guy just by the guy laughing? Nothing made sense - it all seemed kidish fantasies of being a badass to me
The boyfriend kept telling the girl ' show me how much you love me' talking about her sucking his dick - like whaaat? so if she didn't do it right or didn't do it at all, she didn't love you? lmao
It was never explained how a human hunter could see through their wards when the club and facility was all suppose to be invisible. Then they miraculously find the boyfriend's dad and IDK it was all super cheesy! cheeeeeeeeeeeeesssseeeey
I may be an outlier with this one, but it was pretty problematic. My first huge issue is that the writing is clunky. The way readers are told things (bits of information, like how old one vampire character is) is just plain silly. But my next issue is that these decades/centuries old vampires (stuck in teen bodies) still act like junior high kids. I mean honestly, they haven't evolved into adulthood at all! Teen drama just seems silly for vampires.
Then, let me get to my biggest issue. One of the main characters, Tate, should in theory be a guy we like. However, he tricks a bratty vampire into sending nudes while texting. Now, she thinks she's messaging Tate. She's not, she's messaging his friend (which, again, it seems like Tate set this up). HE then threatens to have this nudes shared all over. Essentially, vampire revenge porn situation. This goes back to (1) wow, how childish and (2) if this is how Tate behaves he's actually a pretty disgusting guy. I'm sorry, I get wanting to fight with people, but revenge porn is just never okay. His entire premise here is so problematic that I honestly hope he gets murdered (he doesn't).
Easy to lose interest in this one, kind of how I lose interest in all childish drama.
Some of the erotic scenes seemed out of place with the storyline. They all also read pretty similarly, not a whole lot of variety. The plot was interesting though, I wish there'd been more detail about what was going on and better segues between ideas. It read like the author had a bunch of good ideas and just word vomited them into the story without sifting through them and making the story more cohesive.
Quick easy and a spicy read. Sexy vampires what more could you ask for? Really enjoyed the characters. Jax and Tate were so cute and in love. I really thought it was sweet and endearing how much Jax loved and looked out for her baby sister Elena. Look forward to reading other books from author J.A Roles.
I explored a new genre and a short book "Beyond The Shadows" by Jodie Roles did not disappoint. Not a Witches, Vampires, and Werewolves fan yet? You will be after giving this short read a try. :) P.S. some steamy and erotic scenes are included.
