When you read a book by a new author, you never know what you are going to get. What I got with The Hawk Enigma was a thrilling ride from beginning to end. It had all the ingredients I love – international intrigue, action, ties to the military, amazing technology, and most of all, a great story. I listened to the Audible version walking my son’s dog twice a day and then supplemented it by reading the Kindle version at night – I couldn’t plow through it fast enough.

The story’s main character is Voodoo, a techno-whiz facilitating Seal Team operations. When a Japanese scientist working on an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm that has the chance to spur a new worldwide arms race is brutally murdered and his co-researcher is kidnapped, Voodoo and a team of Navy Seals are brought in to help rescue the hostage. The trail takes them to Japan where they are confronted by a sophisticated foe weaving in and out of the Japanese underworld. The mission pushes Voodoo to the brink of his physical and mental endurance, particularly as the “God algorithm” causes him to confront the demons of his past.

I found The Hawk Enigma incredibly well-researched, well-written, and entertaining from start to finish. I can’t wait for J.L. Hancock’s next book!

A fantastic sci-fi thriller with a AI based plot.

The book was bit slow until Chapter 4 post which it felt like skyrocketing.

The way of narration and the way author explained the technical concepts and nuances are unimaginable.

Just Awesome.

I really enjoyed The Hawk Enigma. It's not one of my usual genres so it took me a little while to get into it but once I did I couldn't put it down.

As it's a technothriller with a military slant, there are a lot of acronyms in the book but they are explained straight away so you don't even have to look them up yourself. I even learned the meaning of some common acronyms that I had heard before but had never really thought about what the letters actually stand for (such as RHIB - rigid-hulled inflatable boat).

There are some very intriguing flashbacks in the book and I loved the way it all came together with a number of shocks and surprises along the way. The action never stops and the characters are brought to life via J.L. Hancock's wonderfully vivid and descriptive prose. I really enjoyed the banter between the characters and the humorous way they referred to certain situations and items.

Grisly, evocative and action-packed, if The Hawk Enigma isn't made into a film it will be an absolute travesty. It's a very well-written and accomplished debut novel and I would highly recommend giving it a read.

I received a gifted paperback to read and review for the blog tour and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

The Hawk Enigma is a novel that hits the ground running right from the very start. It's thrills and spills from the get go, with action galore, intrigue and conspiracy by the bucket load, and great military and technological aspects.

The author’s obvious meticulous research really does shine through in the fine details and wonderfully descripive writing.

Without giving too much away, we follow tech expert, Voodoo, who's assisting Seal Team ops and when an AI researcher is murdered, and his counterpart kidnapped, Voodoo and the Seal Team are tasked with rescuing the hostage.

Want to know more? Be sure to pick your copy up to find out.

So all in all, a throughly entertaining read with quite the pacy storyline, that bobs along nicely and holds your attention to the very end.

I found the characters to be believable, with good depth and they felt real all round.

I’m not normally one to pick up a thriller, let alone a military techno-thriller, but this was so enjoyable to read. I couldn’t put it down! Filled with action, plot twists, mind-blowing concepts and authenticity, it was a wild ride. It also made me laugh and surprised me with its touching, heartfelt moments. (Yes, I cried!) It is just as much a book honoring the bond of brotherhood forged through fighting side-by-side in combat as it is an eye-opening peek into the world of emerging technology and AI. I’m really looking forward to reading the next one!

Wow! That was one wild ride. The intensity level was on high. After reading the first five chapters I knew it was one I needed to make sure I could read the rest uninterrupted. The way everything tied together at the end was satisfying and yet had me wanting more. I hope there is a second book in what would make an excellent series. I have to say that I also appreciated the author's knowledge and descriptions of places and weaponry.

Thank you Booktasters for a copy of this book for an honest review. I can honestly say it was intense!

A gripping read that compels you to keep turning the pages!

This book introduces us to Voodoo, who is a gifted military technician, a genius with technology in multiple forms. He is the tech arm on many military missions, supporting many teams over the years, and is the reason many soldiers have returned from missions of extreme danger. His intelligence, gadgets and quick thinking, along with his ability to fight, have helped him forge many strong bonds in the military, equally, as many enemies.

However, Voodoo has demons. He has harrowing memories of war and is mourning the loss of his wife to cancer. He is struggling to cope with the hollow feeling of the loss of the woman he loved, and the guilt felt from his field mission days. He doesn’t sleep much, and rather than drink or drugs, he throws himself into his work for a secret branch of military research, an organisation which develops crazy advanced military technology. He works to the point of exhaustion, leaving him with no time for anything else, trying to block out the nightmares. Then suddenly, one night, a voice from Voodoo’s past interrupts his recurring nightmares with a cryptic prophetic warning.

At the same time that this is happening to Voodoo in America, over in Japan, two world-renowned scientists go missing. They have been working on a powerful form of artificial intelligence (AI) called the ‘God Algorithm’. With these scientists missing, so too is the knowledge about the AI algorithm, and the powers that be don’t want this information in the wrong hands.

Voodoo gets a call from some old military buddies, and suddenly finds himself on the front line of a team working to stop an AI arms race, rescue the kidnapped scientists and ensure the God Algorithm doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. The more Voodoo learns about the algorithm, he learns how terrifying it is, how big an impact it could have on the world, for good, or for absolute bad, depending on who wields the code behind it. The race is on, and it will take all of the team, all of their multitude of skills, to save the world.

This story has it all: action, drama, suspense, multiple exciting locations, technology that you could only dream of, technology that you couldn’t dream of and technology you hope you never dream of! There is bucket loads of science and futuristic AI made realistic, and then even more action and excitement. The story delves into many broad and engaging concepts like machine learning, optogenetics, drone warfare, hacking and more. I particularly enjoyed the Japanese language and cultural elements, these pieces woven in enriched the narrative and made me feel more engaged in the story.

The character development really works well in this book. Voodoo is not a one-dimensional tech bro/military grunt. He is a person suffering PTSD, loss of his wife, and is struggling to do the best he can. He just happens to be able to hack a computer, build a bomb and kill you with his bare hands. James Bond, eat your heart out. His colleagues, Frisco and Stu, are well-rounded and bring depth to Voodoo’s character, and stand alone well on their own. The scientists we meet (Shimoda, Hawkins) are all strong and well developed, and we find ourselves following them as much as Voodoo in the story. Hancock builds the relationships between characters well. I particularly enjoyed the military background drawn up between Voodoo, Frisco and Stu and the glimpses into their past and the relationship they had that we got shown.

The only fault I may find with the book is that if you find the scientific discussions too in-depth at times, then it may slow the story down for you. But if, like me, you enjoy them, then you will still enjoy the read. There is plenty of action, and the pace is maintained. The concept of how AI can potentially impact war in the possibly not-too-near future is a sobering thought, as you read this at times. Hancock does an excellent job of making an exciting and engaging read, that is thought-provoking, action-packed, engaging, and completely compels you to keep turning the pages until you are done!

I read and listened to this and am thankful that I did because of the locations in Japan and some of the language barriers were basically eliminated (for me). Hearing the correct pronunciation of some of the things made the story much more realistic. Compelling plot, strong characters, vivid description and detail are all within the stories’ pages.

Voodoo (aka Gavin aka White Hawk – iykyk) is a techno-whiz facilitating Seal Team operations.

Warning, once you get past the first 5-7 chapters, you will want to finish this uninterrupted. I love all the characters and they way they came together on Voodoo’s team. The action/fight scenes are phenomenal. This is the perfect mix if a military sci fi techno thriller that I needed to read. I cannot wait to see what happens next. Luckily for me, I don’t have to wait !!!

Here is my review for The Hawk Enigma by J L Hancock

I found this to be a truly intriguing techno thriller that was a gripping read once I got into it. Voodoo was a gifted military technician but he struggles with horrific memories of the wars he survived in and the terrible emptiness of loss of friends and other soldiers he served with. He threw himself into his work and started working for a secretive military research organization. Two well-known scientists from Japan go missing, taking with them the secrets behind a powerful form of artificial intelligence called the ‘God Algorithm.’ Voodoo finds himself on the search team and nominates someone else too who is trustworthy and the right man to help out in any situation. It’s a race against time to find the AI stuff, can they succeed? I found it was a slow start to the book as it was setting the scene but once it started to speed up with Voodoo being picked into a team and the scientists going missing, it got a lot more interesting and I found it hard to put the book down as I wanted to know what happened next. I liked Voodoo as a character as there were many faucets to him. The book was superbly written and well thought out. It was well plotted. It was very descriptive and everything was described in detail. I liked the author’s writing style and I found I got into it easily. I liked the synopsis for the book and I most certainly wasn’t disappointed. The author worked in the military for years and did several different roles so he can call on that when writing his stories and it makes them more authentic. I really enjoyed this story and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

The Hawk Enigma, by J.L. Hancock, offers a thought-provoking journey into the world of artificial intelligence, seen through the eyes of Dr. Hawkins, a scientist with an exceptional memory. The story unfolds around her experiences and the disappearance of her colleague, Dr. Kenzo Ichikawa, hinting at a looming conflict in the realm of AI. This novel seamlessly integrates elements of advanced technology and human intuition, posing compelling questions about the future of AI and its impact on society.

Readers with an interest in science fiction and technology will find themselves deeply engaged with the narrative. The book delves into intricate scientific topics like optogenetics and machine learning, while also incorporating vivid action sequences. These elements cater to a wide range of interests, from those fascinated by technological advancements to action enthusiasts.

The character development in The Hawk Enigma is another standout feature, with a diverse cast that brings the story to life. Characters like Voodoo, who deals with loss and PTSD, add a human touch to the high-tech world Hancock creates. The inclusion of Japanese cultural elements further enriches the narrative, offering insights into different aspects of the country’s history and society.

While I enjoyed the book, I think the detailed scientific discussions and the large number of characters can occasionally slow the story’s pace and might overwhelm readers not well-versed in advanced scientific concepts. I feel this complexity, while intellectually stimulating, might be challenging for those new to such topics.

The Hawk Enigma is a richly layered story that balances the exhilaration of an AI arms race with the sobering realities of war. Hancock skillfully weaves a tale that is both engaging and emotionally resonant, making it a compelling read for those interested in the intersection of technology and human experience.

They call him Voodoo, a man haunted by his past, a man with a military background who works for a deeply secretive military research organisation and a man, thanks to a voice from his past finds himself once again in the front line using his formidable skills with technology in a race against the clock to prevent what could surely be a global disaster occurring.
When a Scientist and his research assistant go missing, one murdered and the other kidnapped the alarm is raised as a code with the ability to change the Arms Race is also missing. A call from his former Seal Team Leader sees Voodoo back in action, the ghosts of his past all to present, the future far too unpredictable, his phenomenal skill base stretched to its absolute limit.
Racing against time to rescue the kidnapped scientist the Team begin to realise that the level of A.I. development along with the sophisticated and deadly Japanese underworld is far greater than they expected, far more dangerous and their reach far more widespread. It is not a case of can they success, but will they succeed in recovering the ‘God Algorithm’ which if it is ever used will have devastating repercussions.
Fast paced, terrifying in its reality and absolutely enthralling The Hawk Enigma is wrapped skilfully around technological crime and the rapidly developing world of A.I. While military and scientific terminology is used it is done in such a manner as to be easily relatable for anyone without either a scientific or military background.
Using his previous life skills JL Hancock has tapped into the world of Artificial Intelligence and the all to probable applications to which this this science could be utilised to deliver what is an absolutely riveting thriller based very firmly in the world of modern technology.

The Hawk Enigma : A Military Techno thriller by J.L. Hancock, is the first book in the new "The Voodoo" Series and I never thought I would read a book with this title and with this description. . . . . . However, I can honestly say " Don't judge the book by it's cover!"

The Hawk Enigma was very fast-paced and full of action throughout that will have you hooked from the very beginning. I so enjoyed the military angle and the cutting-edge technology which lead to excellent high-stakes missions which were excellent, they had me sitting on the edge of my seat and I could not turn the pages over quick enough! .

We meet Voodoo, who is a very gifted military technician, But struggles with so many harrowing memories of war and the emptiness that comes with loss and sadness. However, how Voodoo copes, he throws himself into everything especially work! and he works for the secretive military research organisation, which leads him no time for anything else in his life. . . . . . So it is work, work, eat, sleep and then more work! Then, one night Voodoo heard a voice he hasn't heard in a long time, it is a familiar voice from his past which interrupts his recurring nightmares with a cryptic prophecy. 🤔 🥹

At the very same time, and in Japan, two famous world-renowned scientists go missing and along with them the secrets of a powerful form of artificial intelligence called the “God Algorithm.”

What is or who is the “God Algorithm.” 🥹

The action starts on page one and holds the reader hostage until the very last page.

With prophetic dreams and real nightmares augmented by AI, the Hawk Enigma consumed me in two days. I could say I read the book, but a more accurate description is I lived it through the evolving characters presented in this complex plot. Hancock does an excellent job of drawing the reader into the world of espionage and technology, using military and technical jargon without overwhelming the layman. Having no military background, I was easily able to place myself in the world of military operations with the main character Voodoo and his military brothers as they embark on a mission to save a hostage, while at the same time explore the scientific and moral uses of AI without needing to obtain a PHD. Set in the politically charged world we see with the undercurrent of what we do not see, the book has no superheros, only people using skills and experience enhanced with AI to resolve frighteningly real scenarios in a recognizable world. This is not a book about robots taking over the world, but something possibly more sinister. Set within a cold war perspective with genetic possibilities, my view on AI is forever altered.

Scenes were well paced, both emotionally and physically charged, with a viewpoint that slid easily from one character to the next. Each character, from the military operators to the scientists and programmers involved, are meticulously revealed without compromising the plot or giving away the ending. Even the ultimate villain has a humanity we can relate to, if not completely understand.
This heart-stopping read kept me fully engaged to the end, then longing for more. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next.

I consciously try to avoid superlatives when reviewing books by newer, less experienced authors, but that avoidance would be a critical misstep when giving my opinion about this tightly wrapped, suspenseful novel, which has the characteristics of the best of Tom Clancy or Ken Follett. Regardless of the reader's experience or tastes, I would heartily recommend The Hawk Enigma, by JL Hancock.

So, what is the book all about? A doctor named Ichikawa, working for a company called Xiphos AI, has developed a "God Algorithm" and a compound that enables scientists to "identify the link between intuition, instincts and learning," and thus endow people with the capability to dream about future events. As can be imagined, this is a very valuable capability, one that justifies murder and kidnapping in the minds of bad guys. In the opening sequence, a panicked Ichikawa tries to protect his process by injecting it into colleague and computer specialist Dr. Hawkins, but his plan fails, he is murdered and Dr. Hawkins is kidnapped. An armed forces specialist nicknamed Voodoo is hired to protect another Ichikawa co-worker named Naomi and, in the end, to get DR. Hawkins back. Enroute to the final scene we discover that Ichikawa was experimenting on his daughter and himself, that Voodoo and Dr. Hawkins have a past relationship, and that every scene, including a seemingly unrelated white water rafting expedition, are directly tied to the climax. They even resolve who the "Hawk" is.

Again, it's difficult to express my proper appreciation for a novelist who can so expertly weave together such a suspenseful tale. The Hawk Enigma is enthusiastically recommended.

A novel with so many sides that kept me interested from the beginning to the very end. The novel main character is Vodoo a military technician who is struggling with his past and the loss of his wife. when a Japanese scientist is viciously killed and another gone missing, he was called to join a task force that consists of his old friends to help find the missing scientist and recover the AI the scientists were working on that is called the "God Algorithm". This AI was designed to predict the future and if fallen on the wrong hands can be catastrophic. Vodoo and his friends were determine to find the missing scientist and recover the algorithm no matter how dangerous and risky things are getting including not starting a world war.

The novel is packed with action and the fights kept me at the edge of my seat. It also took me to different places around the world some I never head of before like riding the Colorado river or walking the streets of Japan. I loved that it addresses the hot topics likes the raising of AI and AI WAR and how this impact us as people.

The psych of Vodoo, his struggle and pain, how at the very end he finally found himself and how he was determinate to overcome his sorrows was very touching.

I am interested if the author going to make a second book and I would be love to read another adventure for Vodoo and his friends.

In The Hawk Enigma, J.L. Hancock crafts a relentless techno-thriller that drags readers through the haunted corridors of trauma, desperation, and an artificial intelligence that could spell doom for humanity. Voodoo, our tortured protagonist, is a gifted military technician haunted by ghosts of his own making - echoes of war that claw at the edges of his sanity. He numbs his pain by immersing himself in a shadowy world of military research, but the past is a vengeful specter, and it whispers chilling prophecies that threaten to unravel his carefully constructed facade.

As Voodoo grapples with the chilling remnants of loss, the plot spirals into a frantic race against time that sweeps him across oceans to find two missing scientists, lost along with the secret of the “God Algorithm.” This piece of code isn't just a tool - it's a harbinger of chaos, a digital monster with the power to reshape the very foundations of freedom itself.

Hancock’s prose is an electrifying jolt, lifting the reader into a nightmare world where the stakes are terrifyingly high. Each twist and turn unveils a darker truth, and as Voodoo plunges deeper into a web of deceit and power, the question lingers: will he emerge unscathed, or will the shadows consume him? Suspense builds like a creeping dread, pulling you close until those final, hair-raising revelations hit hard.

The Hawk Enigma by J. L. Hancock is a fast paced thriller. The backdrop is Japan, and core of the story is Artificial Intelligence and the cyber war between big companies to get the God Algorithm, that is being studied and developed by three scientists in Japan. They are Dr. Kenzo Ichikawa, Dr. Naomi Shimoda, and Dr. Hawkins(Taka).
Voodoo is the man or we can call protagonist, a military technician, who got his name owing to his traits similar to that of a black magician, assigned the job of locating the missing scientist, Naomi. He has able allies in his military colleagues Frisco and Stu, as they are fondly called. Both having brut strength with brains to complement.
Voodoo gets dreams that draft out as poems that decipher as something that is going to happen in future. How is this possible? The man who has to be watched out for and fought against is Ryu Tanigawa, a North Korean, employed by the big players to get hold of the God Algorithm. He operates in the disguise of running pachinko parlors, or gambling dens in the shady locales of Tokyo. A dangerous and ruthless antagonist.
Will Voodoo and friends match up to Ryu, or get defeated in the process. This forms the plot of the book, and makes a pacy, intriguing read. Characterisation is apt and in accordance to the story line, and language easy to pick. Kudos to the author in making this an excellent book.

Wow. That is my unarticulate review of this book because it’s so awesome and yet so difficult to get out all the things I love about it. I will be the first to say while I love a good action or thriller movie it’s only of late I’ve started reading them but I am so glad I found the Voodoo series. When I tell you I could not put this down I am not exaggerating. From the intricate and action packed storyline to the amazing characters this was non stop from the first page.
A mix of science fiction to some extant and thriller this is one series I am currently obsessed with. The prose flows so well that you fall into the trap of loosing hours while thinking it’s only been a few minutes. The characters are realistic and believable. Yes, Voodoo and his team are well trained and can get the job done but they are also incredibly human. We don’t have no ‘super’ human leads here. Just those who have trained and seen action, as well as the repercussions of what they have seen and done on them.
I have to say as soon as I finished this one I started the second and Hancock is most definitely a new favourite and instant buy author.
As always thank you to Literally PR for the copy to review. My review is always honest, truthful and freely given.

This is the first techno-thriller I’ve read—but as a long-time fan of thrillers, I wanted to give it a try, and I’m glad I did. THE HAWK ENIGMA is a fast-paced, high-stakes story with compelling characters and plenty of action. In short, it’s an adrenaline rush from start to finish.

One of the book’s most intriguing elements is its use of AI. As with many emerging technologies, it raises the question: is this a step forward, or are we teetering on the edge of something dangerous? The story explores this through the chilling concept of the “God Algorithm”—and while I won’t give anything away, I’ll say this: it really makes you stop and think.

Then there’s the team—Voodoo, Stu, Frisco, and Sparks. Voodoo is the main protagonist, joined by Stu and Frisco, his brothers-in-arms from their days in Iraq. Sparks is the newest member of this elite unit and fits right in. When things heat up, it’s thrilling to see this tight-knit, battle-hardened team leap into action.

I’m glad J.L. Hancock has written more books in this series—I’ll definitely be following this formidable special forces quartet on future missions.

4.5 stars rounded to 5 stars for Goodreads.

Book 1 in the Voodoo series. This is literally the perfect book for me to read - maths, military, and science - hello day job.

I loved watching the action unfold and meeting all the unique characters, especially Voodoo himself. You easily get a sense of their comradeship, determination, and general "badassery".

The author does a great job of explaining acronyms and concepts to those that wouldn't be familiar with the terms, but I did feel more immersed as I already knew them. Thinking about where military tech could head next, especially in the new AI age, and what that would mean for countries trying to outpace each other (or kill) for the answer is really interesting.

Whilst it's quite a lot to take in at the start, you soon settle in for the ride which is clever, has good twists, is full of international conflict, and could easily be real in today's age.

Overall, brilliant and I can't wait for the next - it's Pure Frickin' Magic.

*I received a complimentary copy of the book from LiterallyPR and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This is Book 1 in The Voodoo Series.

What an intriguing book and from a new genre combination I hadn't tried before - Military Technothriller.

The story follows Voodoo who is Military technician as he and the team try to locate scientists who go missing after working on 'God Algorithm' which is extremely powerful Artificial Intelligence.

Voodoo is the main intriguing character who we learn and discover who he is over the cpurse of the book. He is resourceful and highly intelligence.

He is a man who you want on your side in a battle.

The story itself is gripping and you can certainly understand more of J.L Hanock's background, given the real-life feeling missions and also intelligence in there.

The story is made up of various POVs and given the short chapters, I felt it was easy enough to keep up with who was who. The short chapters also helped to keep the pace of the book and also the tension.

This was been a great introduction to the world of Military Technothrillers and I can't wait to arrive what happens in Book 2.

Oh this book was sooo good. It was well written and creative. The characters were well developed and distinctive. There is so much smart stuff going on in this book that the author clearly knows a whole lot about-pure craziness-but all the science, tech, cultures, history, military operations, languages-were explained well in the book without me feeling like I was talked down too. It’s mind blowing that this tech exists. This book is well researched or the author is just like Louis L’Amour where he’s experienced so much stuff.

I can’t wait to reread (all good books should be reread multiple times in my opinion!!), because I didn’t see the ending coming, and to get set for the next book in the series. I can’t wait to read what Mr Hancock is cooking up in his next book…

Several people in my family have read or listened to this book. We love Kirby Heyborne in our house and he did a great job on the audio with Japanese pronunciation and the sound effects. Book or listen you’ll enjoy!

This book was an absolute amazing read. The research Mr. Hancock has put into it from a tactical perspective is perfectly captured. As a military veteran I often struggle with authors missing the mark with TTP’s, and accuracy of weapons and tactics. That’s not the case with The Hawk Enigma.

The main character, Voodoo is masterfully developed. The depth of his humanity, and ability to efficiently exact violence is unbelievably complex.

By no means am I a technologically savvy guy. However, this book explains things in layman’s terms that even I could understand it. Without giving anything away. The technology aspect of this novel is frightening. The depth at which we are plugged in to our world digitally has certainly encouraged me to re evaluate my dependence on internet accessibility.

If you’re on the fence with this one, just get the book. You won’t be disappointed.

It was out of random research we stumbled upon this incredible written work by @authorjlhancock .. Researching Ai and falconry and… boom - The Hawk Enigma. We joked that there’s no way someone wrote a book about tech, the samurai, drones, hacking, and Ai, or that it involved hawks. No fuggin way! It’s all the shiiit we’re into. We were wrong… So we bought a few. Read it over the past couple weeks. Straight up ladies n’ gents. This book is insanely good. To see creative wordplay meet a story involving tech, combat, and the hunting of formidable threats is a full God send. It’s the book we needed. Even better; it’s a book the community needed. Hancock unleashed a knowledge bombardment. Rightfully so, the dude is the real deal and spent time as the innovation lead for Navy SOF Teams. Good shiiit homie and thank you for ripping it up. Give that dude a follow and grab this book!

I must admit, I was a bit nervous about starting hawk enigma because it’s not necessarily a genre that I would read, but I want to give it a go because why not push yourself out of your comfort zone! I’m really glad I did the book kept me on edge the whole time and I was turning the page as fast as the action of the plot to find out what happened next. It made me laugh smile and also cry at all the right moments. The characters were all very well developed and as someone who is starting to get even more interested in the tech world and AI it was a great way for me to explore this further in a story based with these themes. The ending was tied up nicely but yes i craved more from the author and was so glad that their was another book to read by him! Would recommend to anyone needing a good thriller and something to get them out of a reading slump.I promise you wont regret it

💫 The Hawk Enigma by J.L.
Hancock 💫

I’m so honored to be a part of this amazing tour. Thank you @literallypr and @authorjlhancock for introducing me to Al and ‘real world’ sci-fi through the Voodoo Series. It’s so good to try a different genre 📚

Voodoo’s past forces him to predict the future. Throughout the story I closely followed the disappearance of two scientists and the God of Algorithm. This story was full of fast paced military action. The Hawk Enigma had me on the edge of my seat. I really felt like I was on the front lines of an A.I arms race with the future of freedom at stake.

The ultimate question:

Can Voodoo find the scientists in time? What will happen next?

If you’re looking for thrill, military operations and insane technology all in one. This is the book for you.

l’d 100% recommend this book to everyone. Easy 5⭐️ rating

I made it about halfway through The Hawk Enigma before deciding to put it down. The premise is strong and I can see why a lot of readers really enjoy it, the mix of tech, espionage, and action has a lot of promise. The writing is clear, and the technical details feel well-researched, which adds to the authenticity. That said, it just didn’t fully hold my attention. The pacing felt uneven, and while the plot had interesting threads, I struggled to connect with the characters enough to stay invested. By the halfway point, I realized I wasn’t eager to pick it back up, so I decided to DNF. Overall, I’d still recommend it to readers who love tech-heavy thrillers with a military/espionage vibe, it just wasn’t quite the right fit for me.

I normally kind of jump back and forth between books as I'm reading, but I actually read this one straight through. The pacing was great between setting up the characters' background and keeping the action and intrigue up, and the small cast had some really likeable characters. The tech was cool, and the algorithm was pretty clever.

As for content, some of the scenes were pretty graphic, but the violence made sense in the context, there was no gratuitous sexual content thrown in, and the language was fairly clean throughout, so it's all meat and no filler. This is a good group of characters, and I'm looking forward to future books in the series.

Voodoo had fought in the Iraqi War as a target finder. Voodoo works in a military research lab and has dedicated his life to his work after he lost his wife to cancer. There are two renowned scientists Dr. Taka Hawkins and Dr. Kenzo Ichikawa in Japan who were working on secrets of artificial intelligence called the “God Algorithm” and they go missing. Voodoo and his team must find the missing scientists before the shift of global power from the God Algorithm gets into the wrong hands. This story has surprising twists and turns that will leave you wanting to read more. I really enjoyed this fantastic technothriller novel.
