This book is an extensive rewrite of "Second Chance Bird"
Every American knows about the poor dodo, the veritable poster child of wildlife extinction. When Caroline Platzer explains the bird's total extinction to her young charge, Princess Kristina, the very upset princess is determined to do something about it—and it may not be too late! The last recorded sighting of the dodo was in 1662 and now it is only the year of our lord 1635. Maybe, just maybe . . .
Enter Pam Miller, Grantville's resident birdwatcher and nature lover. When asked by Princess Kristina to lead a mission to the distant Indian Ocean Isle of Mauritius to prevent the hapless dodo's inevitable extinction, Pam agrees. Wasn't saving the dodo one of her own childhood dreams? Now, thanks to the Ring of Fire maybe she actually can! She and Princess Kristina hatch a plan, bonded by their mutual love for the natural world.
The whole thing will be terribly risky, a long journey in a sailing ship around the Horn of Africa and out into the still mostly unexplored vastness of the Southern Indian Ocean. Can Pam Miller really save the dodo? Can she save herself and her companions from the multitude of threats they will face along the way? The only thing Pam knows for sure is that this is her chance to change history, and an ungainly flightless bird is counting on her.
I grew up like a tumbleweed in the arid wilds of eastern Washington State, riding horses and motorbikes through the sand and sage brush, enjoying great freedom of movement at a very young age. I was always headed out on expeditions to see what lay beyond the next shady canyon or rolling hill, a curiosity which eventually led me to travel widely in Europe, Asia and Africa. I'm pretty much the definition of a ' maverick,' safe but dull careers, mortgages and insurance are things I wouldn't touch with a seventy-two and a half foot pole. I prefer to be down to my last ducat and on the road, my personal wealth is all in experience. Wherever I go books have been my constant companions, they grant access to places no earthly airplane or ship can venture, to the limitless realms of the written word. I currently enjoy a ridiculously comfortable existence in Bangkok, Thailand and I'm not bored yet. My brain announced to me recently that "It's time to write!" so here I am.
Update: With Volume 15 I became the Art Director for the Gazette! Good thing I like a challenge. :-D
This novel is a revised and expanded edition giving more detail and a solid conclusion to the adventures of Pam Miller, the "Bird Lady of Grantville". Her quest to introduce conservation ecologist practices to the world of Eric Flint's 1632verse of stories is a great adventure. Danger, toil and trouble all must be overcome if the living Dodo is to be saved from extinction. Highly recommended.
When Princess Kristina of Sweden sends a fleet around the Cape of Good Hope to prevent the extinction of the dodo, the "Bird Lady of Grantville" and the sailors and colonists she leads must cope with shipwrecks, pirates, and the French Navy before their colony is a success.
In this Ring of Fire story the Princess of Sweden asks Pam to save the Dodo bird. Pam said to eastern Africa where the Dodo lives. This book tells of her adventures.
As usual, a fun ring of fire story. This one in the South Pacific. I highly recommend it to any who like the Ring of Fire series though nowhere near as serious as most.
