As a first generation black corporate worker inSouth Africa, having grown up parents who were teachers or other public servants, we often cannot get enough transparent advice on navigating the corporate world.
In high school and university we are sold the idea that merely qualifying as a doctor, CA or engineer will “set you up for life” which is not a completely true - one still needs to actively manage and build one’s career over and above qualifying.
This is why I particularly enjoyed reading Nyimpimpi book because it taught me about the importance of career management. Secondly, it taught me the importance of asking for help and managing failure. These are only two out of many lessons contained in this well-written book.
To everyone who is in Corporate, Entrepreneurship or juggling both, please go out there and get the book.
The book was an excellent read. The author details his journey from his childhood into the top offices of multinationals in a gripping manner that takes you on a ride with him.
What stood out for me, was how relatable the story was, this was an ordinary person from very modest beginnings, who made a decision and took opportunities before him which allowed him to grow in stature and accomplish what he has. It really is a story that says “it could’ve been anyone”.
The leadership and career lessons in book are very tangible, and made easy to adopt. It’s always great to get those nuggets in a book that you can apply quickly and easily.
Very relatable biography which lets you in, into the private life and thoughts of a corporate executive. I must be honest in saying, prior to hearing Nyimpini on radio, I had no prior knowledge of him.
I loved the little anecdotes he shares on his personal life, for example stories about how he met his wife and how he was almost derailed from his career ambitions because of thinking ‘he had arrived’.
This book has unfortunately also made me realise that I am not a big fan of ‘business management’ biographies, but rather a big fan of the personalities and character behind these glorious careers.
Otherwise, this is a great read which teaches you a lot about managing your career and trying to shoot for the stars in the corporate environment.
