Exiled

Rate this book
Pro hockey player Archer Holt is taking his charm and swagger from the ice to the...sand? One of sixteen players competing to be the last man standing on a new reality show, he’s all in until he finds out the meaning behind the show’s title—Exiled.

Archer
Before I was a pro hockey player, I was an Eagle Scout. I can tie knots, build shelters and fish like nobody’s business, making me the perfect choice to represent my team on a reality show set on a primitive tropical island. I can endure scorching heat, tough competitions and torrential rainfall—no problem. But when I find out who my partner is, I’m not so sure I’ll survive being stranded on an island with her.

Lauren
Archer Holt broke my heart eight years ago. Now he’s rich and famous, and I’m a high school English teacher in our hometown. When I’m offered the chance to compete for half a million dollars by outlasting fifteen other teams on an island with my selfish jerk of an ex, I jump at it, because that money can change not just my life, but my family’s. Besides, I’m long over Archer.
Or so I thought.

The hero was amazing and I liked the banter, but I couldn't get over two things the whole time:

- how idiotic it is to pair the hockey players with their ex-es without them knowing beforehand (to compete in a reality TV show)... it's shitty really and hate this form of entertainment
- making the engagement a deal breaker at 18? it's ridiculous to blame him for refusing something he obviously wasn't ready for and it came across manipulative to me.

Also, the author uses often simple and I'd say bare sentences, which felt flat and... distant to me sometimes. The flow was good though.

5 Lauren and Archer Stars

I loved this book so much. I now have an almighty book hangover but it was totally worth it. Archer Holt had me hooked from the very start.

Archer is a successful NHL player and captain of his team. He is asked to go on a reality show set in Fiji. He thinks he and all the others are taking part to try and win money for a charity of their choice - and they are -but there is a huge twist that they were not aware of and that is that they are being paired with an ex partner. For Archer, that means seeing the only girl he's ever loved. Lauren and he were High School Sweethearts but they didn't part on good terms and she still hasn't forgiven him.

Let the games begin...

It's such a brilliant idea and I haven't read any other books with this plot. It's a strange mix of I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here with the bush tucker trials and Hunger Games / Ex On The Beach all rolled into one beautifully written book with characters that I felt really invested in. It was perfect escapism and I need that right now.
Even if you aren't a fan of reality TV shows , I would still urge you to read this because it is much more about a second chance romance and how Lauren and Archer end up being a real team trying to win , rediscovering old feelings on the way.

As a heroine Lauren was likeable and I warmed up to her through the book. She was devastated when they broke up at 18 , they both were, and she is definitely in self preservation mode when they reconnect. She has a backbone to her and I loved that she was tough and brave. I was cheering for her all the way through. Lauren was a serious badass.

As for Archer...oh my goodness. He had me from the very start. He's everything I look for in a Hero and he is still in love with Lauren. When he reveals something near the end I was even more smitten with him. Tough, gorgeous, funny, loyal , smart, competitive, adventurous and so very determined to have Lauren back in his life. *sighs wistfully*

Brenda Rothert is one of my favourite authors and I love diving into her books. She is the author that got me into reading Ice Hockey Romances in the first place, from Bound, Now and Then, Hooked , His to the Chicago Blaze Series and many others, whether it's Ice Hockey or not , her books are my Kindle Catnip. I'm very much looking forward to the new series which starts with The Donor: A Colorado Coyotes Hockey Romance in September 2022.

Exiled was a great second chance romance that I would highly recommend. I borrowed it on Kindle Unlimited but then bought it to keep.

HEA? Yes! Gorgeous.
Cheating? No.

This romance had a very clever premise. Hockey player Archer (as well as other players throughout the league) agreed to appear on a reality show for charity. The show was very similar to SURVIVOR except for a few things. While Archer and the other players thought they’d be teaming up with each other, they were thrown a curve ball and told they’d be teaming up with…their exes. (Girlfriends or wives)
Imagine the drama…

Archer is paired with his first love and high school girlfriend, Lauren. Lauren and Archer haven’t spoken to each other in eight years. Their breakup was a result of a ‘put a ring on it’ ultimatum by 18 year old Lauren when Archer was drafted to his NHL team in Minnesota, and Archer wanted Lauren to leave Iowa and come with him. Archer wasn’t ready for marriage at 18 so they decided to break up. I guess they never heard of long distance dating…

Anyhow, despite hurt feelings on both sides, they agree to work together and win this competition. But being around each other forces them to confront their feelings for each other. Will they let hurt pride stand in the way of what they both want? Who’s going to be brave enough to put themself out there and say what they really want?

I really enjoyed this story. I liked the Survivor angle and I liked to see Archer and Lauren act like mature adults eventually and talk about what happened 8 years ago. Of course both of them frustrated me at times because they only went so far and wouldn’t take that final step of laying it all out there!
This was a nice easy read with an eventual HEA ending of course. And yes, there were a couple of hot moments with this couple that made you wonder why they ever were apart.

If you enjoy reality tv competition and second chance romance, this could be the book for you.

Mixed feelings

I'm a big fan of the concept, it's the execution that I didn't love. Having a second chance romance set in a Survivor-like reality show created some great forced proximity, tension, and the requirement that this couple work out their differences if they want to succeed. I loved that it felt unique, and I was certainly curious how things would play out. But the reality show element ended up taking over the storyline, with SO MANY quick scenes packed into one short book. Every scene was so quick that the interactions felt shallow; those complex emotions didn't have enough time to simmer. Which made a few things feel kinda cringey. There were also some inconsistencies in the hero's dating history, which made me focus more on their time apart than I would've liked. All in all, not a bad read, but it could've been a lot better with a little more time in the oven.

The story follows Archer, a pro hockey player who is excited to go on a brand new reality TV show, Exiled. The concept is mysterious, but Archer knows he'll be competing against other hockey players, and he's ready for some fun in the sun. The only problem? It turns out that everyone will be competing in teams of two... and he'll be paired up with the woman who broke his heart at 18. Archer and Lauren were high school sweethearts, but their relationship ended when he was drafted. They blame each other for the way things ended, but the situation was more complicated than either is willing to admit. As these two former lovers deal with eight years of built-up anger and resentment, they're forced to work together to survive.

So let's start with the obvious: the concept is kinda ludicrous. Pro hockey players would not agree to sacrifice their million dollar bodies for a reality TV show where they'll be malnourished and exposed to the elements. I know that. They didn't need to be hockey players either, but whatever. I really liked the originality of the storyline, and the setting creates plenty of perfect moments for a second chance romance. Where this falters for me is the length, mostly. There'd be a challenge, a brief romantic interaction, then rinse and repeat. It was too much for how short the book is. Parts of the second chance dynamic also rubbed me the wrong way, but I'm not someone who loves this particular trope. I was also confused by Archer's dating history - sometimes it seemed like he's been a player, sometimes it was the complete opposite. They had definitely both moved on prior to the start of the show, but there were clearly lingering feelings there. Ultimately, there were too many things going on, and I would've enjoyed this a lot more if everything had just slowed down a bit.

Review by Jen Skewes

I loved the idea of this book, because for one I am a reality TV junky. and a reality show where two exes are paired together and force to work together I am all for it. But in some ways this fell a little short for me.

Archer is a professional hockey player who has signed up with 3 other hockey players to participate in a reality TV show. When he gets to the island he learns that he will not be partnered with one of the other players, but instead his ex girlfriend. The only girl that he ever loved.

Lauren agreed to this reality show because she could use the money if she wins. Being paired with her ex boyfriend who broke her heart is not ideal and the last thing she wants, but she has to focus on the money.

Lauren and Archer must work together if they want to win. While Lauren claims he broke her heart she does not realized how much their break up affected him as well. She only seemed to see her side of things. But spending so much time together, you can Gell that the sparks and love between them is still very much there. they just need to get over what happened in the past. But also need to communicate a bit better about it as well. Will this reality show bring them closer of keep them apart?

This is one of the feel good second chance romances. Loved seeing them work together and rekindle their love in the process. But for me personally it fell a little flat for me. There was no drama or angst to keep me on the edge of my seat. Which don't get me wrong is ok. But while I did enjoy the story, for me something was missing.

I loved the plot line and concept of this story! It was something different with a hockey twist which I’m all about.

32 players from 32 NHL teams are on their way for a new reality show. They are to be exiled on an island, survivor style. But the plot twist is they will be paired up with an ex partner. Archer is partnered up with his ex-girlfriend, Lauren. They were high school sweethearts but broke up before Archer left for college. Feelings they thought were gone start to surface as they go through this extreme challenge.

I could not put this story down and finished in just a couple hours. I really wish this was a real show because I would turn in for every episode. Archer was an instant favorite and I’m glad the story centered about him and Lauren. He’s a genuine guy and you can’t help falling for him as he competes to win and work on a possible rekindle with Lauren. I loved that Lauren is a teacher and how she was playinging for her nephews and to prove that she could do it. You could feel the angst and how much they still cared for each other. I hope that this eventually gets turned into a series, there was so much promise on possible future stories from the other players. The epilogue was the perfect ending.

Good idea, poorly execution

The idea was great, I just think this book is too short, too uniteresting and too fast. I didn't particularly care for the female lead, she convinced herself he broke her heart when in reality she tried to force something he was clearly not ready for and then got mad because he didn't go along with her manipulative tactics. And okay, I could've had accepted that she was young and scare, but during more than half of the book, she just wasn't pleasant to the guy when he was trying to do his best to get along and win. Archer was an awesome character, I really liked him, he was such a sweetheart to her when she didn't deserve it. He was to blame for her stupidity instead of accepting she broke both their hearts by not trusting him like he trusted her. Anyways, the end felt rushed and not good enough. I was pretty dissapointed.

This one was ok for me. Part of it was the reality tv aspect, I really hate that form of entertainment. The other part was just the thought of pairing a hockey player with an ex of theirs is horrible, trash tv at it's worst. I do think that Archer and Lauren did a great job of working together, despite things being rocky at the start. A big part of it was due to Archer looking at them as a team and actually helping and looking after Lauren, something I would have thought all the teams would have done, but learned that wasn't the case. I did like that Archer and Lauren were in it to win it, hated how things ended for them, but in the end they did really win.

I can tell you for sure after reading this book, I would never go on a reality survival show! I wouldn’t make it through the first day. Can you imagine going on an island with an ex of yours?‽ it was funny how some of the people reacted. I loved Archer and though as he was such a good guy. Unfortunately Lauren and Archer had broke up when he got offered a spot on the pros right out of high school. Lauren didn’t want to leave Iowa to go to Minnesota without some sort of promise. Of course I didn’t blame her. Now it’s eight years later and they have to team up to work together to win the competition rounds. I sure couldn’t go what those two went through, but I was glad to see they matured and was able to talk to each other and think about the past in a different light. The book was exciting at times, and I encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy and voluntarily wrote a review.

I really enjoyed this book. Read it in one sitting. It was unique and I really love the concept. I got the Real World/Road Rules Challenge vibes- if you don’t know what that is… then damn I’m old😂😂😂

Archer and Lauren are thrown together to work to win half a million dollars. Archer is a pro hockey player so he’s not in it for the money, Lauren is a school teacher and could really use the money. For days and days they have to work together to complete challenges and beat the competition.
This book had it all humor, steamy and it was just a good book!

Archer Holt and Lauren Monroe were high school sweethearts. When Archer left to play hockey in college, he asked Lauren to leave with him, but she told him she would only do so if they got engaged. They were only eighteen, he felt they were too young for such a commitment, so he refused and they broke up. Now, eight years later, Archer is Captain of the Minnesota Mammoths, and Lauren is a high school English teacher is Sioux City. They were living their lives apart, but they never forgot each other.

Archer was recruited for a reality show called Exiled. There was a representative from all the professional hockey teams. He was pumped up, raring to go and driven to win the competition. Then to his huge surprise, the show decided to up the ex in Exile, and all the contestants were faced with the exes of their lives, ex-wives or ex-girlfriends. He was faced with Lauren, after eight years without any contact. And he was expected to team up with her for a month long competition!

What I loved most about this book was how the author worked their relation so that love flourished again and how she made the reader fall in love with both characters. Apart from being competitive, they supported each other through all the challenges, Archer took such excellent care of Lauren, and Lauren more than equalled Archer in strength and bravery. As they overcome obstacles, they remembered how to be a couple again and for me, it was inevitable that they would get together again. They had more things that united them than kept them apart. I loved how caring and considerate they were to each other, even though at times they would bicker and bring back past grievances. I loved the process the author took the reader through, living through a reality show, icky parts and all. It was exciting and, for the competitors, horrendous, but I enjoyed since I was a mere spectator.

Thank you Brenda Rothert, for the exciting reality show that I didn’t have to suffer through and the lovely story of a couple getting their second chance at love. The writing was stellar and the characters fabulously developed. I loved everything in this book!

Professional hockey player Archer Holt has been selected to represent his team on a Survivor-like reality show called Exiled, in which hockey players compete to win a $500,000 donation to the charity of their choice. When he arrives on the island where the competition is to take place, he's confronted with a twist: they'll actually be competing in pairs, and to put the "ex" in Exiled, his partner is none other than his former high school sweetheart, Lauren Monroe. They didn't exactly end things on the best of terms, but now that they're forced to work together, can they move past the hurt and anger to find a way to win?

I really enjoyed this fast-paced and adventurous story, which was refreshingly different from any of the other romances I've read lately. Even though Archer and Lauren hadn't seen each other in eight years, they still had plenty of chemistry. There was a lot to work through from their past, and they were understandably distracted by the demands of the competition at times, but the slow burn as they got to know each other again was quite well done. It was easy for me to root for them to win the competition as well as end up back together when it was all over.

I highly recommend this fun and original story for all contemporary romance fans and look forward to Brenda Rothert's next release.

4.5 STARS
Archer and Lauren are ex-high school sweethearts who go on a Survivor-like reality show and end up being surprised that they are going to be participating as partners. It’s all ex-girlfriend’s with their NHL hockey player exes teamed together. Drama absolutely ensues, there are so many funny and fun situations that revolve around this aspect.
I thought it made for a unique plot and setting.
They’re forced to help each get through challenges and build camp, etc. to stay in the game.
I enjoyed the concept and story very much.
I think the characters slow burn attraction was great.
It was very slow burn, I’m not the biggest fan of extremely slow 🔥, but plenty of people love it and I still found that I enjoyed the story very much.
I liked the way Lauren and Archer supported each other despite the pain from their break-up.
They do move forward and I appreciated the way it played out.
I would have liked more scenes of the two of them interacting to feel more invested in them together.
A bit of a better feel that I knew them as a couple together.
Other than that I loved the story and enjoyed the fresh, unique feeling. It was immensely enjoyable and entertaining. It’s a nice bit of an escape with unusual situations and characters with heart.

Wow! What an amazing story this was! I fell in love with the characters, and the story line was perfect! 5 hot hockey stars for this one!
When Archer finishes his hockey season, he's off to compete in a reality show called Exiled, with thirty other NHL hockey players. What he doesn't know is they've brought all the players ex girlfriends in to partner with them, this should be interesting right!
Lauren agreed to do the show because she wants the prize money plain and simple. It took her a long time to get over Archer, he was her first everything, and when he left town after he was drafted, she was completely lost with out him.
Will these two be able to put their past aside and work as a team to win the competition?
I loved the whole idea of this story, it was a great story to read! Don't miss out on this one!

Archer and Lauren

Archer signs up to do a reality show during the off season. Each team is respresented and he is the player to represent his team. Upon arrival they find out they are playing in pairs. Paired with an ex.

Lauren was Archer's first love, first everthing. When he got drafted he wanted her to go with him but she had her dreams too and they were only eighteen so who knew what the future would hold.

As they have to work together on this show they also discuss the past and realize they both still very much love each other and that maybe their expectations of each other at eighteen may have been unrealistic.

Can they work together to win and find their way back to each other?

5 star Review Exiled by Brenda Rothert

Archer Holt is a man who is charismatic and someone you cannot help but be drawn to. Imagine just surprise when he is partnered with his old love, Lauren to compete on the reality show Exiled.

Complications quickly arise when Lauren realises that she still has feelings for Archer, the man who broke her heart. However she is determined to win the money, even if it means partnering with Archer.

This was at times an emotional roller coaster of a read as Archer and Lauren fought to come to terms with the past and the navigate a rocky path towards their happily ever after.

Exiled is a unique and quirky storyline that is about second chances. A light romance that leaves your heart full and your emotions on a high. Archer and Lo have a past and when they are thrown together as a result of a reality show, these two must learn to work together. The originality of this story is a big plus and one that ensures you do not put this book down. Their story is highly entertaining and will have you falling in love with these two. A definite five star read and one of the best second chance romances I have read.

Who knew a reality show would throw these two together to compete. Lauren needs to win for herself and her family. Archer is winning for charity! Complex challenges will test their willingness to work together and trust each other again. This was a hot and steamy book! I’ve watched reality shows before but; never one like Exiled! And this book made me feel like I was watching a reality show instead of reading it! I will continue to read everything Brenda Rothert writes. This book was amazing!

Let me tel you I binge read this 6 star story in one night. So I didn’t get much sleep from this page turner.

Archer goes on a reality show like survivor. He’s representing his hockey team. He gets a partner once there, his ex. Lauren will sacrifice being close to him for that amount of money. This is there adventure.

I loved everything about this story. From the storyline to the amazing characters. It was a great adventure that made me read it for hours on out. I couldn’t seem to be able to put it down once I started. Entertaining to the max and highly original. I have never read this sort of storyline before. I loved the perfectly created characters. Bottomline this is a must read.

Standalone told in a dual POV with an HEA. I strongly recommend this story.

4.5 out of 5

Looking at the more recent books I’ve read, I seem to be focusing on a few authors. This time once again it’s Brenda Rothert. It’s one of her hockey series but no hockey in this one.

Archer Holt is a pro hockey player who is representing his team in a Survivor type reality show, the winner gets $500,000.00 to donate to the charity of his choice. But this reality game show has an unexpected twist. Each player has a partner and the partners are their exes, which as one can imagine makes for some interesting conflicts. In his case, he’s partnered with Lauren, his first love. They had been deeply in love when they were 18. But they reached an impasse when he is drafted to a team in Minnesota. He desperately wanted her to go with him but she wanted a definite commitment from Archer but because they were both so young he didn’t feel he could give that much of a commitment, not to mention he was at the very early start of his career.

I really enjoyed the whole idea of this book. It’s clear that even years later Archer and Lauren have deep feelings for each other but both feel betrayal by the other. I love how they work as a team despite their issues with each other. And Archer is so supportive and protective of her even though he was badly hurt years earlier. He’s the athlete of the two and he’s also the captain of his team so he takes more on himself.

I also appreciated reading about the game and the different challenges. The dynamics between some of the other teams and the partners were interesting/fun. And since this is a second chance romance, I love how well done it’s done. I really believed in their chemistry and growing feelings for each other.

Once again I love a book written by Brenda.

Meh. Almost quit quite a few times. I am not a reality show person at all. I found her to be annoying. She blamed him for not proposing at freaking 18 when he got a pro hockey contract. She wouldn’t follow him without a commitment. I sort of get that but why no try long distance and a proposal at 18 is ridiculous. She also apparently was super independent (per being told that) but that was not the impression I got. Also her name is Lauren which is also my daughters name. Cleary she goes by “Loren” to get a Lo nickname which I don’t like either. Never really felt a connection between them.

4.5 stars!

I’m not sure if I’ve read any of this author’s books before, but I know that I’ve had quite a few of them on my Kindle for a while now! I was intrigued by this book because I thought that it was about about a couple who become trapped on an island! Turns out I was completely wrong and it wasn’t that at all lol! I mean, there were couples on an island, but it was actually for a game show! This was a really cool concept because I haven’t read anything like it before! The plot developed at a nice pace and it only took me a few sittings to read because it kept me intrigued! The main focus of the plot was romance, and it was a second chance romance! The romance actually took a while to develop properly and it allowed for a few steamy scenes! The characters were also amazing and made this book even better! Lauren was the main female character, and in this book she had her reasons for participating in the game show! It's fair to say that Lauren went through a lot on the island and I did feel for her because she was determined and she faced some of her fears! She also became more likeable for me as the book progressed! Archer was the main male character and love interest of Lauren! Archer had history with Lauren and it was easy to see that he still cared about her! He was protective of her as well! Archer also had a brilliant career as a pro hockey player and he had made a name for himself! Archer's career was part of the reason that he and Lauren broke up, but it also brought them together in a way! This book was written from both Lauren and Archer’s point of views! I wasn’t sure if it was going to be before I started reading, but the synopsis does give the impression that it’s going to be written from dual point of view! I loved that it was because it helped me connect more with Lauren and Archer and see how they felt about each other and how those feelings hadn’t changed! It allowed for more a few more things to happen in the plot as well, even though Lauren and Archer spent a lot of the plot together! I can also completely understand why this book is a standalone! Everything in the plot was wrapped up and all the questions raised were answered! The ending was also left at the perfect place for the characters and it summed up their story! I now can't wait to check out this author's other books! As I said, I don't think I've read any of her other books, so I can't wait to check them out and give them a read! The cover for this is initially what drew me to it, even though I knew the author's name! I love it a lot and it really suits the feel of the book! The cover models are also the perfect Lauren and Archer!

Reality shows are my guilty pleasure, so when I read the blurb for Exiled I knew I needed to read it. From the very first page I was HOOKED. I loved the premises for this book, it is unlike anything I have read. Brenda combined so many of my favorite things: hockey, reality television, and romance. And friends, she did not disappoint! While I would consider this “hockey light” Archer is a professional hockey player for the Minnesota Mammoth’s and he along with a player from each team in the league are competing in a reality show during the off season. The men have no real idea what it is about until they are competing on the island and they meet their teammate who is not a stranger to them. Archer is Lauren’s first love, and when they broke up so he could move to Minnesota to play hockey she thought over him. But this chance of lifetime was something she couldn’t pass up. This reality show is providing Lauren who is a high school teacher an opportunity to purchase a home and put money away for her nephews college fund. She is willing to put up with Archer. Lauren is the girl that got away, and one that has always been in the back of Archer’s mind.
These two have incredible chemistry, an easy friendship and some seriously stellar banter. Archer moved to the top of my book boyfriend list. He is just so sweet. He is a natural caretaker and cheerleader. He knows his strengths and Lauren’s and does a great job playing into those. These two worked well together and it is clear that they have a strong foundation. If love a great second chance romance, a good reality romance show with a little survivor thrown in, this book is for you! Once you start this book you will not want to put it down…I read this in one sitting!

Archer is a pro hockey player, pro Boy Scout and is ready to sink his teeth into a once in a life time survival reality tv show. He’s got the skills, but will be survive unexpectedly being partnered up with his Ex.
Lauren is a teacher, happy with her hometown life. But when she’s given the opportunity to with 500,000 by joining a reality tv show with her Ex, she can’t the it down. But will she survive being partnered up with the guy who broke her heart 8 years ago, and will they both make it out without catching those pesky feelings again…

Ex on The beach meets im a celebrity get me out of here, in this hilarious adventure novel. This one was so funny and fast paced you couldn’t help but dive in and keep reading until you were done. It was short and sweet, the banter and chemistry between characters was great and the whole premise in general was just really interesting and not what I was expecting. I’m not a reality TV kind of person but if this show was real I would 100% watch it. You could see this being real and it felt so weirdly relatable and genuine. They really put the Ex in Exiled and I’ve honestly never read anything like it!

It was a wild ride from start to finish and I loved the journey both Archer and Lauren went on, finding themselves and hashing out all their dirty laundry to finally get to a place where they were both happy. It was super easy to read, and if you’re up for something light hearted that’s a good laugh this one’s for you!

Exiled is one of the most unique reads of 2022. Brenda Rothert has created a story filled with second chances, first love, forever love, but more importantly the power of friendship and forgiveness.
Archer is chosen to represent his NHL team in a reality survival show. When he reaches the island where the contest is to be held, he is shocked by the news that his partner in this experience is to be his ex-girlfriend, Lauren.
Lauren is not only driven to this competition by the lure of a prize of $500,00.00 but also to prove to herself and others that she is strong and courageous and most importantly she is over Archer.
The competition reveals so much more to Archer and Lauren. Most importantly that they still know so much about each other despite the years since their relationship and they still have deep seated feelings for each other as well.
I am in love with this story and characters and scared to death that Brenda Rothert may some day decide to produce a reality survival show! (Just wait until you read what she puts her characters through) Review submitted by C. Seymour (blogger)
