When an overworked and over-opinionated Irish mother gets some time off work, she decides to milk it. Cara thrives in a more frivolous routine and it’s not long before she forgets the break was only supposed to be temporary.

Desperate to maintain her expensive lifestyle, she goes to jaw-dropping lengths to get what she wants. When her desires aren’t met, her secret scheming spirals out of control. It gets increasingly difficult to cover her tracks, as the little white lies turn a shade darker. Her devoted husband is left questioning his wife’s motives, but the more he discovers the less he understands.

What starts off as a midlife crisis culminates in the realisation that if Cara doesn’t change her calculating ways, she’s in danger of losing everything she holds dear. The question is, will she come to her senses in time to claw back the part of her life that’s actually real?

Rachel Rafferty writes contemporary women's fiction set in Ireland. Her stories contain female protagonists in their thirties and forties facing life challenges with varying degrees of success. The books are lighthearted and accessible, often sprinkled with humour.

Rachel fell in love with writing during a career break when her children were young. If she could stop for one second to tidy her house, she would, but those blank pages get filled quicker than the mop bucket every time!

She lives in Dublin, Ireland, with her family of five and big dreams.

An unexpected page turner

Reading about a self centred mums spiral into despair and the route back from the brink shouldn't be so entertaining, but it was! The manipulation at first seemed like pure selfishness, but as the story progresses you realise its masking a woman drowning. This book was unexpected but enjoyable and I flew through it in just a couple of days. Kept me guessing right up to the end

What a page turner! I read this book in record time because I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. Plot borders on unbelievable, but just as it approached that point, I found myself thinking of people I know who would likely pull similar shenanigans if given the chance! Super fun read with well developed interesting characters. Highly recommended.

This is my first novel written by Rachel! So absurd to be true and yet maybe we all know someone who has the same mind of the main character!
