هذا كتابٌ جارحٌ من فرطِ حساسيته.
إنه كتابٌ عن معضلة الهشاشة، عن اللا مبالاة الباردة، عن الطفل غير المرئي في العائلة، عن الفقدِ والحب، عن العزاءات الصغيرة التي يمنحها الفن.
حكايةُ بيرتا - شخصية حقيقية بالمناسبة - هي حكايةُ الذات الحساسة في عالمٍ عدائي أو غير مبالٍ.
ومثل جميع الكلاسيكيات التي يتصدَّر لبطولتها الأيتام؛ منذ هكلبري فن، والأميرة الصغيرة، وصاحب الظل الطويل وحتى هاري پوتر.. تجيء هذه الحكاية أيضًا لتؤكد على الأمور الجوهرية التي نتناساها؛ كن لطيفًا، فالحياةُ قاسية بما يكفي.

Por favor, ¡atención! Que vengo a hablar de uno de esos libros que se va a quedar en mi corazón para siempre.
‘El pájaro que llevo dentro vuela donde quiere’ ya desde título muestra el lirismo visual, emotivo y profundo aplicado al texto a la imagen y al mensaje que esconde la obra.
Es, por varios motivos, uno de los libros más bonitos y conmovedores que he leído nunca. Empecemos por lo obvio… estamos ante una obra ilustrada bellísimamente por Sara Lundberg. Las pinturas son expresivas a rabiar, llenas de vida y color, de naturaleza, pero también reflejan dolor, miedos y soledad. Por otro lado, el texto es otra maravilla, que habla de la infancia de la artista y educadora sueca Berta Hansson (1910-1994) inspirándose en sus cartas, diarios y obras.
Creo que leer esta obra como adulto tiene un mayor impacto por su propuesta narrativa en primera persona desde los ojos de la Berta niña. Aunque creo que es un libro disfrutable por todos los públicos, hay capas a las que solo llegas cuando ves la infancia con cierta perspectiva y así, la obra sirve de desencadenante de cientos de recuerdos que te conectan con esa otra forma de vivir y sentir que se acaba cuando creces.
Berta crece en una familia numerosa de la Suecia rural, su madre, enferma de tuberculosis, permanece en cama y es el gran apoyo a la hora de desarrollar su creatividad y su arte, frente a una sociedad que imponía a la mujer su papel de ama de casa.
La historia nos habla de crecimiento, de pérdida, de lucha, y también de la vocación artística. El caso de Berta, independientemente de que ella logró ser una artista reconocida en vida, pone en el foco de nuevo la respuesta a la últimamente tan repetida pregunta (¡y menos mal que la hacemos!) ¿por qué ha habido tan pocas mujeres artistas a lo largo de la historia?
Un libro que tienes que leer, para disfrutar y emocionarse una y mil veces. ¡Por cierto, al final viene una biografía de Berta Hansson! El perfecto complemento a la historia.

Based on the artwork, diaries and letters of Swedish painter Berta Hansson, a childhood tale of growing up on a farm, relegated to chores of necessity when ones heart is set on creating art. The early loss of her biggest supporter (her mother) only adds to her dismal dreams. It’s hope beyond hope as escape seems impossible from the predestined life women are handed. But…..

قرأت هذا الكتاب في أحد تلك الأيام الضبابية. تلك الأيام التي نفقد فيها البوصلة، نتيه فجأةً وسط معمعة الأيام، ويرسو على حركاتنا وسكناتنا ثقلٌ مجهول. ربما هي تراكمات الأيام والأحداث، وربما هو نذيرٌ بالحاجة للتمهّل في الحياة والتقاط الأنفاس. إلى جانب أشياءٍ صغيرة ولكنها حميمية، جاء هذا الكتاب كالضوء في آخر النفق. حينما كنتُ أقرؤه، كنت أشعر بكلماته ورسومه وهي تطبطب على قلبي. وحينما أنهيت قراءته، كان قلبي خفيفًا حرًا كالطير الطليق.
سيذكّرني دومًا بأننا بحاجةٍ للكتب لننجو. للكتب والكثير من الحُب.

The concept of this illustrated children's book really appealed to me. It's inspired and based on the childhood of a Swedish artist Berta Hansson (1920-1994) during the period in her life when she was 12 years old and just wanted to be outdoors in nature or painting or making birds out of clay.
However, her father was strict and serious and her mother was frail and in bed very ill, so she was needed to help out in the home and on the farm, and all the more so when one of her older sisters is sent away to study domestic science.
Sometimes she sneaks out at night and walks to the trees by the doctor's house, the only person who has ever complimented her on her art.
It is a story of family, expectations and obligations, and of the longing a child has for something that is difficult to articulate or express in words, little understood by the world of adults. How to realise your dreams when the way is not clear.
A beautiful book for all ages.

‘Inspired by the paintings, letters and diaries of the Swedish artist Berta Hansson’, The Bird Within Me is an evocative and affecting graphic novella illustrated by Lundberg and translated by Epstein which presents us with an intimate insight into the early years of Hansson’s life.
Hansson’s childhood was, for the most part, an unhappy one limited by circumstance and gender. Growing up on a homestead with her family in 1920s rural Jämtland, her life was one bound by religion and her duties to the family’s land and animals. Emotionally distant rather than cold perhaps, her father, a churchwarden, binds his daughter to her duties in preserving the home and livestock but her heart and mind are constantly drawn to art, the natural world and the escape and freedom they offer. Sadly, her mother, the one person who understands her, suffers from a debilitating tuberculosis and although her daughter’s paintings and drawings brighten up her bed-bound days, she dies when Berta is sixteen.
With no desire to stay trapped within the village as a future housemaid, she bravely seeks the support and guidance of the local doctor who had long recognised Berta’s artistic potential. When her father, emotionally drained by the death of his wife, agrees that she should follow her dreams and gift, Berta finally attends Sigtuna highschool and not only flies but soars.
Deftly translated by B.J. Epstein, this biography may be touched with tragedy but make no mistake this is a story overflowing with beauty and hope. It is Berta’s desire for freedom and the gathering of strength to pursue what she feels she was born to do that should be celebrated. Berta’s story, collated through various letters and diary entries, is told in first-person verse inviting a far more intimate and affecting reading: something more akin to an autobiography and a form rarely found in biographies. The poetic, personal style and sparse text make the reading far more sensory and emotionally heightened.
But it is Lundberg’s spiritual and otherworldly gouaches that will stay with me. From the endpaper spreads that look out into an endless sky, to those moments cast in shadow, she uses position, perspective and colour to shape our perception of Berta’s world. As with the written narrative, we often find ourselves peering over Berta’s shoulder or seeing the world through her eyes. This is as intimate a biographical reading as one could hope for.

Sin duda este es uno de los libros más bonitos que tengo en mi biblioteca. Tanto por las increíbles ilustraciones, que podéis ver en las siguientes fotos 👉🏼, como por la historia basada en la vida de la artista Berta Hansson.
Con unos textos sencillos, precisos y con mucha sensibilidad nos cuenta la historia de una niña que no encaja en el mundo en el que vive. Su mente inquieta, como los pájaros que crea con arcilla de la acequia de al lado de su casa, no deja de volar por encima de la granja familiar, de los quehaceres y trabajos rutinarios, y sueña con salir de allí y poder dedicarse a lo que de verdad le apasiona: pintar.
La autora se inspiró en los propios diarios y la correspondencia de Berta para formar este relato tan inspirador, en el que también hay grandes dosis de una cruda realidad. Porque la vida agrícola en Suecia a principios del s.XX no era fácil, están presente la enfermedad y la muerte, los prejuicios y el inevitable destino al que se veían destinadas especialmente las niñas, sin ninguna otra posibilidad más que casarse y ser amas de casa. La narración en primera persona nos transmite de una manera muy cercana los deseos de Berta, sus sueños, su frustración, su tristeza y desaliento, pero también el apremiante magnetismo que la pintura ejerce sobre ella y, finalmente, su rebelión.
La edición es simplemente una maravilla, las tapas duras, la calidad del papel y todas y cada una de las ilustraciones, que son una obra de arte. Y por si esto fuera poco, al final hay una pequeña biografía de la artista con fotografías, bocetos y alguna obra suya, además de una pequeña bibliografía por si quieres ampliar información. De verdad, este libro es una joya para tener en cualquier biblioteca, para leer y releer, contemplar sus ilustraciones, para regalar, para mayores y pequeños... Es sencillamente precioso, a mí me ha enamorado.

Wow! What an incredible book! The Bird Within Me tells the story of a young girl 'Hansson' living in Sweden with her family, her mother who is dying and her father who wants her to work on the family farm! However, Berta's hopes and dreams of becoming an artist take over her life!
This story has so much meaning to every page. The detail of the illustrations, the way Lundberg uses the language to write made me so engaged in the characters' lives. I was hooked straight away! The themes of family, grief, illness and dreaming, make the story so real! I would highly recommend this book to anyone - will definitely use this in KS2!

لنا لقاء مع حكاية بيرتا الفتاة التي لا ذنب لها سوى أنها كانت تحلم.
لم تكُن كالأخريات من حولها
كانت مختلفة ،حالمة لها عالمها الخاص.
ترغب أن يحلق طائرها الذي بداخلها حيثما يريد ولا يظل حبيسًا في قفص العادات و الأعراف التي وضعها المجتمع.
حكاية مُلهمة، فاتنة آسرة مؤلمة
أحببتها بقدر ما أوجعتني كثيرًا.
اللوحات الفنية بداخل الكتاب أضافت جمالًا و رقة لا توصف وهي أيضًا من لوحات بيرتا هانسون صاحبة المذكرات.
لم تكُن كالأخريات من حولها
كانت مختلفة ،حالمة لها عالمها الخاص.

Fantastiskt fin, både berättelsen och illustrationerna. Sorglig också. Det är vackert med barnböcker som vågar berätta och känna, som kan tilltala både barn och vuxna. Fågeln i mig flyger vart den vill är, för mig, en berättelse om ensamhet, längtan och sorg, om vikten av de vuxna som finns i ens liv, om att få bli förstådd. Hoppas många mellanstadieelever får läsa den här och prata om vad som är viktigt för dem.

A rather stunning fictionalized account of Berta Hansson, a Swedish painter working in the 20th century - based on her own diaries and art work; it's a story of becoming yourself and daring to challenge others expectations of your life and yourself, to dare to take a leap for your dreams. It's also a story touched by grief - the loss of a mother, as well as the one person who supports your wish to doing something 'different'. Really a beautifully told story and most of all beautifully illustrated, capturing something timeless in our common desire to break free.

يا ترى كيف للفقد أن يتخذ حيزا في قلب طفلة ترى والدتها المريضة تقترب من الموت شيئا فشيئا؟
هذه قصة لفتاة سويدية تدعى "بيرتا هانسون" والتي لاحقا أصبحت أحد أهم الرسامين في السويد، مما قاد المؤلفة "سارا لوندبيرج " لتبتكر كتابا مستوحى من أعمال وحياة "بيرتا هانسون".
تقول الكاتبة سارا:"
"لقد استخدمت نموذجا للواقع عبر شخصية بيرتا. أردت التقاط إحساس بالضعف ، بالحياة النابضة ، بالدم المتدفق تحت الجلد لإظهار الاختلافات في اللون ، في الظلال ، في درجة الحرارة."
هذا الكتاب كان دافئا وساحرا يملؤه الدهشة وحب الحياة كما أن العنوان أيضا مستوحى من أحد مذكراتها.
ستدهشك هذه الفتاة الصغيرة وتملأ عقلك بالأسئلة وقلبك بالتعاطف والأمل فرغبتها لتصبح رسامة أشبه بطائر يريد أن يطير ليخلق عالمه الخاص.
أحد الرموز في الرسومات كانت اليد المنبسطة تعبيرا عن الرغبة في قول شيء ما
أو رغبة لرفض ما يحدث
وربما رغبة في اطلاق سراح ما نعتقده أنه ملكا لنا.

هذه قصة جعلتني أؤمن جدا أن ألم الفقد لن يتخطاه المرء ولكن يجعله ينمو حوله لتعرف لاحقا كيف لك أن تتقبله لتمضي الحياة وكما قال معلمي في الفقد ديفيد كيسلر :" We dont get through pain, we grow from pain”

Detta är en annorlunda barnbok, som snarare är biografisk än skönlitterär. Den fångar in läsaren med ett enkelt skriftspråk men mer komplext bildspråk. Det händer mycket i illustrationerna som gör det värt att ägna lite extra tid åt att titta på dem och låta dem berätta.
Boken handlar om sorg och rädslan att förlora nära, men framför allt handlar det om att få leva ut livet fullt ut, och att få välja den väg man vill gå i livet. Kanske rädslan inte bara handlar om att förlora människor som står en nära, utan också om att förlora den väg man valt att gå, det liv man suktar efter att få leva.
Vackert bok, som är kort men väcker många tankar.

This is a truly inspirational book! It tells the story of a young girl living in Sweeden with her family. Her mother is sick and her father wants her to stay at home. Berta, on the other hand wants to pursue her dreams as an artist!
The illustrations are stunning and this really is a beautiful book for all ages.

Малата Берта е талентирано девојче кое сака да стане уметница. Но единствен проблем е што е родена во почетокот на 20 век. Во тоа време жените немале никакви права. Од нив се очекувало да бидат домаќинки и ништо друго. Берта е родена во Хамералд каде што нејзиното семејство има фарма. Таа потајно црта и слика и и' ги дава цртежите на нејзината болна мајка. Знае дека е потребна на фармата, да остане дома, да прави ручек и да се грижи за куќата додека другите работат. Но нешто длабоко во неа почнува да гори и не ја остава да се покори. Мајка и' го поддржува нејзиниот талент, за разлика од татко и' кој не може да прифати едно девојче да прави безвредни работи наместо да помага. Дали Берта ќе се избори за нејзините права? Дали ќе може да премине преку ѕидовите кои општеството високо ги поставува околу жените?
Оваа книга е инспирирана од дневникот на Берта Хансон. Всушност книгата е како еден вид на биографија за сликарката. Покрај текстот вклучени се и илустрации кои се толку живописни што се изгубив во нив. Корицата, насловот, содржината, се' кај оваа книга ми се допадна. Квалитетот на страниците е одличен!

Длабоко во неа вријат чувствата и емоциите кои се предизвикани од неправдата и тие чекаат погоден момент за да се прелијат. Токму една случка ќе биде пресудна за животот на Берта. Многу интересно четиво кое се чита веднаш. Кога ја зедов книгата во раце влегов во еден поинаков све�� и воопшто не бев свесна за оној околу мене. Ја читав без здив, сакав што побрзо да дознаам дали Берта е доволно храбра да го бара она што го посакува или пак ќе молчи и ќе се покори на барањата на нејзиниот татко.

Miljön är norrländsk landsbygd strax efter första världskriget. Där är kynnan (kossorna), fäbon, källarbacken, skogen, vedspisen, lungsoten… Det är lågmält och realistiskt, och samtidigt helt fantastiskt att de stora drömmarna finns i en liten flicka i en liten by i norra Sverige. En liten flicka som tror så mycket på sig själv och sina drömmar att hon vågar göra det som inte många skulle – att stå upp för sig själv och protestera.
Jag är helt enkelt kär i den här boken, och önskar att den skulle läsas av många, alla. Rent textmässigt är den lämplig från 9 år, men som högläsning funkar den för betydligt yngre, och uppåt skulle jag säga att det egentligen inte finns någon gräns. Det här är en bok som jag lätt skulle kunna tipsa om när det kommer någon ur personalen från ett äldreboende och vill ha högläsningstips, just för att den miljö som beskrivs är en miljö som många av våra äldre fortfarande har upplevt.
Så läs den! Läs den högt för barn, läs den högt för äldre, läs den tyst för dig själv och ge bort den till den där 10-åringen som älskade Bullerbyn och Madicken när hen var mindre.

The book is short on words, but large on images and the combination of it is worth seeing. Even though the situation with women who are high above the expectations of the 20th century to be a mom and housewives are always the same, such stories still inspire. Also some give satisfying feeling on their success.
Eventually there is a person who helps, who supports and protects and the actual child makes it out in the world and can be itself, finally.
This book is about that...and also about the art of seeing art and to see the essence, the nature of people and things the way the author sees them.

Po przeczytaniu polskiego tłumaczenia książki stwierdzam, że zostanie ona ze mną długo i będę polecać - szczególnie mamom, siostrom, przyjaciółkom. Książka urzeka tym w jak łatwy sposób niesie trudny, ciężki, ciągle aktualny przekaz - że bycie kobietą może już na starcie sprawić, że nie jesteś w czymś brana pod uwagę. W książce dotyczy to kwestii podjęcia edukacji wyższej ale kwestię tę można łatwo przełożyć na inne płaszczyzny życia, tego bardziej aktualnego (bo akcja książki toczy się w XX wieku).
Książka przypomniała mi jak ważne jest podążanie za swoim wewnętrznym głosem, branie pod uwagę własnego zdania, czasami bycie egoistką.
