When Valora Keri was six years old, she was tired of being bullied. So she did what any kid in her shoes would do: She freed a cat-demon in exchange for the power to fight back.
She might have accidentally killed her mother in the process.
Since then, she’s tried to balance the scales by living a good life in post-collapse San Francisco, tending bar in a seedy club and acting as protector for the girls who work there.
But when someone brutally murders one of her girls, all bets are off. Val will stop at nothing to avenge her death and bring the guilty to justice.
Her search for the killer takes her deep into San Francisco’s underground, uncovering vampires, shifters, mobsters, monsters, and ancient cabals — and something she never expected — a race to recover a magical artifact of terrifying power.
Now, Val must fight to avenge her friend and also save the city she calls home from the forces that want to tear it apart. All while trying to keep her own demon in check.
If you love flawed heroes who never stop fighting, snarky sidekicks, and found family, you’ll love this thrilling new Urban Fantasy Supernatural Mystery series.
At least, that’s what his teachers always told him when they caught him secretly reading a book instead doing his schoolwork.
He never did stop living in those worlds, and nowadays he dutifully writes them down and shares them.
When not writing, he is also a very busy audiobook narrator (under the name J.S. Arquin), lover of all things Fantasy and Science Fiction, and general weirdo. He is mostly harmless.
This one started out amazing but after that, the story became quite aimless and messy. It tries to do everything and accomplishes nothing. And toward the end, it just crashed and burned. It devolved into a catastrophe of boundless tstl and lost any common sense. The book becomes a mix of a third-tier 60s YA superhero comic book including one of the most pathetic supervillains I have witnessed to date and a pathetic attempt at a darker story with trauma that can be overcome with determination and believing in yourself and pledging to protect humanity while also not killing or even imprisoning mass murderers because they hopefully learned their lesson and forgiveness is virtue and whatnot. It's just absurd. I don't even have words for how bad this ending is.
Dead Wrong is the first book in the Keri Chronicles series by A.C. Arquin and is an Urban Fantasy Supernatural Mystery that will suck you right in and never let you go as it takes you on a journey through a uniquely intriguing urban fantasy paranormal dystopian type world. Arquin did a phenomenal job of creating a unique world with diverse characters and a magical mythical plot that totally captors es the reader!
Our fearless heroine Valora has a tragic past that has shaped her into becoming a truly strong kickass character and I fell in love with her and Mister E right off the bat. After being relentlessly bullied and tormented by kids in her village growing up, a freak occurrence happens and “something” came to her rescue—leaving death and tragedy in its wake. Sent away to an estranged relative in America tragedy still follows our heroine and she finds herself struggling once again, kicked out and essentially on her own….except for a demon cat friend she calls Mister E and the powers that she mysteriously possessed that one fateful day as a child.
Fast forward to the present where Val is now living in a post apocalyptic San Francisco working as a bartender at a strip club, having to deal with nefarious characters and repressing Mister E and the powers that call to her. However, when one of the strippers is brutally murdered right outside the club, Val finds herself drawn back into a supernatural world of gods, demons, monsters and of course magical powers as she hunts down the killer to seek justice for her friend Ruby. What transpires next is a magical journey of discoveries, violence, vengeance and tons of action filled with mythical creatures and supernatural beings as Val struggles to to use her powers to find the answers she needs.
The narrative of the story does fluctuate back and forth between Val's past and her present, which at first made the flow of the story a bit jilted, but once you get used to it it’s not so bad—especially as the past gives you such insight into who Val is presently as a character and seeing all she’s overcome. I loved the diversity of the characters and how the author slowly built up the story around them as you read, creating side characters that were just as intriguing as the MCs. And let me just say I know he may be this evil demon entity that basically corrupted a 6 year old but man do i love Mister E and can’t wait for more!
Overall, if you love urban fantasy, supernatural mystery thrillers with tons of magic, paranormal beings and a kickass heroine with demon powers—then this is the one for you!
This is a fantastic urban fantasy read set in post apocalyptic San Francisco. In this we meet Val who tends bar and looks after the girls working there. The world building is awesome and you can really visualise everything. It’s a dark world of vampires, shifters, mobsters, monsters, and ancient cabals as one of the girls gets murdered and Val sets out to avenge her. She is a strong kick ass heroine and I absolutely loved the snark and sass between her and the demon cat. With an exciting and engaging storyline this draws you in and I am so ready for book two.
My Thoughts: This is an alternate world where it is similar to our own world but with magic in it and therefore differs from ours. Everybody knows there is magic but most of the population (who has no magic) is in denial, or don't want magic to be real. Some are, up front antagonistic about it, so those with magic tend to keep to themselves, quiet, and/or hide. It has all kinds of supernatural beings in it like vampires, witches, nephilim, demons, shapeshifters, and all sorts of creatures. I like the premise of the story and that is the main reason that this book got bought. Another reason is that I like the narration when I listened to the sample. However, halfway through the book, my interest started to lag... Not only that, Val is too stupid to live (tstl)!! I don't think I would be buying anymore books by this author because I cannot stand the stupid!
The author has adopted the "chopped-up" style of telling a story alternating between the present and the past. Like, chapter 4 tells the story of the present time. Then chapter 6 tells the the story of the past. Then chapter 7 goes back to the present and chapter 10 tells the story of the past again, and so on and so forth. Back and forth. I m not fond of this kind of writing style. It has the tendency to yank me out of the reading grove and back to reality. It disrupts the flow of the story. I find that annoying. It is not very annoying with this book this time, but, I worry that it would in subsequent books...
It is fun when the author narrates their own books because for one thing, you cannot dispute the narrator's interpretation of the book because most likely that is how the author meant that book to mean... hah!
Quantitative Evaluation: Story telling quality = 3 Character development = 3 Story itself = 1 Writing Style = 2 Ending = 2 World building = 4.5 Cover art = 4 Pace = (8 hrs and 33 mins listening time) Plot = 3.5 Narration = 5
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring by more than 0.50 of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
1.25*
Started out quite well, but it lost me and for me, it did not stick the landing.
I'm not a fan of jumping around in the timeline. I'd have preferred it if the first part of the book was young Val, then the rest be 'current day' Val. I ended up skipping over the flashback chapters, because I wanted to read the 'current' Val plot. -- The book lost 1/2 a star for that.
I do not like the 'love interest'.
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: No
Would you recommend?: No
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
Urban Fantasy books tend to have heroines who barely scrape by, living from hand.to mouth always worrying they will not.be able.to.pay the rent. Working.dead end.jobs, mainly bartending, always in grimy hole in the wall.places. Valoria Keri is.no different, she works in a dingy strip club in a San Fransico which is being slowly eroded by the natural.world. In Valoria's world the climate change has passed the point of.no return and humanity is in a fight for it's own survival. Magic has also made a resurgence in this world so the "monsters" are back. Shifters, Vampires, Seraphim and Witches to name but a few. Valoria is an interesting character at aged six after a traumatic life changing event she was sent.to.America to.live with her aunt. This did not go well and Valoria ended up.in the.system.but.no foster care for her, group homes and at sixteen a psychiatric facility. Valoria doesn't know.what she is witch, monster, elementalist who knows all she knows is she's never met anyone remotely similar. Valoria has a familiar (sort of) a spirit animal (who manifests as the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland), the car Mr E is violent and.bloodthirsty and can drive Valoria to commit extreme acts of violence if she doesn't keep.a.right reign in her emotions. Then one.night on leaving work Valoria finds.the dead body of her.friend Ruby, Ruby was one of the.nicest people Valoria ever knew and someone/thing slaughtered her Valoria will not rest.till Ruby' s murder is avenged ..................whatever it takes...
My overall reaction to this book is positive. There are a lot of good pieces mixed with an interesting storyline.
I think the author does a good job of building the world Val lives in. Everything isn't explained and there is a ton of room for growth, but I feel as though I understand the main pieces and that I am learning the rest with the MC.
The characters are a little harder to connect with because Val is just meeting them and we don't get a lot of their back story. I hope the author corrects this in the next book because, in addition to wanting more about the individuals, I would like to understand how the groups came to be and what effect the magic surge had on them.
I liked the flashbacks in Val's life that give her more complexity, but I struggled with pieces of her character. For someone who was a bit of a lone wolf, she certainly started trusting a lot of people rather quickly and it felt a little contrived. I also wished we had seen more interactions with Ruby. I didn't really get a feel for their relationship, even though Val feels very strongly about it later. Mr. E is very intriguing and I was glad to see their partnership evolving near the end… I'm pretty sure there is a lot there and more than a few surprises.
As for the writing, this book is well done. It's engaging and a little mysterious, but easy to follow and fun to read. I'll definitely be looking for the next one!
I received an ARC from BookSirens and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
I was given an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. I did toss up rating 3.5 or 4 stars. I ended up going the 4 starts as I did enjoy this book. My gripe is Val, I had a love/hate relationship with her. As the main character she drove me crazy with how often she flew off the handle with her anger and reacted first, causing death & destruction and only afterwards tried to find out the facts. She has an invisible cat as her guide who doesn’t really guide her although it’s still not confirmed if that’s his or her fault? After all those years together why didn’t Mister E speak up or Val ask for help? It’s only in the end she realises Val learns to become one with her power and it doesn’t have to be destructive, leaving the door open to branch into another books.
I found the “bad guy” obvious but maybe I read a lot of urban fantasy mysteries.
I really enjoyed how the book jumped from now to the past repeatedly, giving me more understanding into how Val became who she is and the trauma she experienced growing up.
The world building was good and easily grasped with the details given. The elements of various supernaturals is interesting. This element definitely suckered me in. I like the supporting characters too and hope to see more of them in coming books. Overall great beginning into a new urban fantasy series.
I was given an advanced copy of this book from Book Sirens in return for my honest review. These opinions are of my own. Having never read any of A.C. Arquin's other books, I did not know exactly what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by how well written the book was. Dead Wrong is a mix of paranormal mystery/thriller type book. The main character, Val, is a badass heroine that often struggles with herself as to whether she is a good or bad person. She has a demon cat inside of her that only she can see. The conversations and interactions between the two are quite comical at times. Val is a bartender at the local strip club. When one of her only friends is murdered behind the club, Val sets out to find the murderer and avenge her friend's death. Along the way we are introduced to a variety of other magical beings. While we don't get much details on the side characters backgrounds, I found them very interesting and wanted to learn more about them. I really hope to see them in future books. I enjoyed the flip-flopping from present to past to give us some background on the main character. Overall, this book was a great read! I can't wait to read future books in this series. I highly recommend this book to be added to your read list!
Well, the title suits the book. This is one series I will not continue after my experience with this first book.
The story and the writing is mediocre at best but it is not outright bad.
The problem I have with this book is that the author cannot keep his political opinions out of the book and splatters it with a bunch of agenda driven nonsense.
It is littered with rubbish about climate change for starters. That I could possibly overlook, if the book had been really good that is, but when he then adds far left propaganda like “Capitalism is a disease, you know.” that is the point where I draw the line.
I am simply feed up with this nonsense of using what should be entertainment to push political rubbish (falsehoods) and I am not going to reward these people with my money.
It’s a good book, weak in spots. The premise is good. It lacks cohesion, or maybe it’s emotion. It’s almost there. should you read it yes! Will I read the next one yes! This isn’t meant to discourage the author. It’s so close to being amazing. Please keep going don’t stop. The themes of power, self control, lack of self control, redemption and failure are great. You have this. Just keep pushing and break through the good enough and move to amazing. You have it in you to make us cry and laugh and feel with your characters.
Dead Wrong, the first book of the Keri Chronicles series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). Arquin is a new author for me, but Dead Wrong is a promising start to a potentially interesting series. Val is a string protagonist but she has vulnerabilities that make her more relatable.I have a few concerns about how some conclusions were reached, but overall, I'm downloading book two so I can see where this goes.
This was a great book with a unique new world to dive into! I love the story line and where is is going. A fresh take on supernaturals that will have you engaged from front to back. Some reviewer pointed it there were holes in the story or where things could have been elaborated more on, however I haven’t found that to be the case.
Would definitely recommend reading this book! Now onto the next in the series!!
My problem with this book was the MC. She had anger issues and knew she had problems controlling her power which could result with people dying. She still made bad decisions. She was not smart, abrasive and antisocial. Unable to learn in the 20 years since gaining her powers is crazy!
I did not like her at all. I tried. As for the storyline, it was ok around the MC. Not reading two.
I quite enjoyed Dead Wrong. It has all the hallmarks of a good urban fantasy: the gritty underbelly of a city, a variety of power-hungry supernatural beings, and a heroine coming to terms with her own powers. This may be the first UF I've read that is set in San Franscisco, and now I'm wondering why that is, because the city could almost be a character on its own. This was a really good start to a series, and I'm looking forward to reading book #2.
This was a fast paced, exciting read. The characters are likeable (I even loved to hate the bad guys) and the urban fantasy elements really worked well. The mystical cat was particularly intriguing, and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
I received an advance copy of this book in order to provide my honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. Its very different then your typical fantasy novel. The author did a great job with the world building. The characters are fun and different. I can't wait to read the next book. And I love that there was no huge cliff hanger. Just some hints dropped on what to look forward to in the next book.
The MC's power set is interesting enough, the general premise is fine, but the whole book feels like it's trying too hard. A little too much teenage-edginess in the vibe. The pacing also kind of clacked along weirdly at times. It wasn't bad, but I probably won't read the next book.
Not bad at all. The MC, Val, is definitely a gray character bordering on black, but she loves her friends and is trying to make up for past mistakes. When one is killed, Val wants the murderer brought to justice. Angels, demons, vampires, and shifters round out the cast of side characters. I might read the next one just to see if the series is worth diving into.
What do you do when friends get hurt or worse dead? You get even by bringing justice to the fight. I really enjoyed Val's story and look forward to future books.
I. Absolutely love everything about this! Keri is such a strong character and her story is top notch. I am so excited to see where this series will go. Perfect for Jim butcher, Kim Harrison, and ( surprisingly ) stranger things fans :)
Magical rain, crazy angels, and invisible cats, oh my! As the first in a series, there's a lot of flash backs used to help with world and character building. I'm not always a fan of heavy flash back usage, but it's stops just shy of being annoying.
Pretty good mystery thriller with a entity that gives the heroine a powerful set of magic. I didn't like that through the whole story we never get to know what he really is.
Not what I expected from the description. I expected a lot more snark and humor. Instead, there was heaviness, self-loathing and angst. Just not the light read I was looking for.
That was very dark. It suffered for me from Val being ridiculously powerful but not using it and people suffering until she did. Lots of self loathing and poor judgment. Not my thing at all.
This book had a lot of action an mayhem. The cat...I hope in future books we find out more information on it. The characters were interesting and got into all sorts of trouble. I enjoyed this book and recommend it.
A post-apocalyptic tale set in San Francisco that drew me in with its unique characters and interesting storyline. I'm looking forward to reading more from this series.
