The looming Second Machine War has been years in the making—and now the upcoming battle is here. After being kidnapped from the afterlife and forced on a time-traveling quest to find a way to sink the Floating City, home to the machine race, Pierce Landcross has escaped the wasteland future to be reunited with his sons, Kolt and Joaquin. Now, the Landcross family must embark on a final mission to send the Metal Metropolis to the bottom of the ocean. But dark forces are arrayed against them, and old enemies will return to do anything to stop them. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. I admit I'm a fan of the characters, the series, and the author.
What to say about the last book in this series but wow. Everything happens so fast it's hard to put this book down. Michelle Lowe has great story telling ability crafting character that all at once are believable with circumstances that are unbelievable. It's as if someone is telling you a story that you keep saying "unreal, but I could see how that would happen to them." I loved this book but I'm sad it's the end of a beloved character (not a spoiler this is the last book in the series and as of yet there hasn't been word of a sequel).
Michelle E. Lowe has created a world, somewhat like planet earth, and filled it with all manner of beings. The interaction among humans, supernaturals, and cyborgs makes for a compelling read. If you're watching "Halo," Ms. Lowe's fight scenes are as good, if not better.
The saga of Pierce Landcross starts in LEGACY (book one of the Legacy series) and culminates here in GHOST FIRE. The books in between vary in characters and locations, but at the heart of all of them is Pierce Landcross in his dapper coat, carrying his Oak Leaf pistol, getting in and out of trouble while moving this incredibly complex story forward. GHOST FIRE does a grand job of pulling all the threads together, and, if you've read all the other books in the saga, brings back memories of times, places, and folks that have come before.
As always, I recommend that you begin at the beginning, with LEGACY, and work your way through the legend that is Pierce Landcross. There is a whiff of steampunk in it that only grows stronger with each new book. In fact, these books touch on all aspects of speculative fiction while throwing in a dash of romance and enough raw adventure to keep you reading long after bedtime. We all need a bit of escapist fiction to balance the situation that is the world today. I'm happy to say these books have been mine.
Legacy Legacy-The Reunion Legacy-The Underground Legacy-Bounty Hunter Legacy-The Forgotten Story Legacy-The Payment BOOM TIME The Age of the Machine The Age of the Machine: Soul Thief The Age of the Machine: Other World The Age of the Machine: Ghost Fire
This is the fourth and final book in 'The Age of the Machine' series. It's bittersweet, but oh boy what a way to go out and finish up a series. I have been traveling with these characters for years and have found myself transported to some of the most amazing and exciting places with some of the most interesting characters you will ever be introduced to in a series. Thank you Michelle for the experience. Maybe we will meet Pierce and friends somewhere down the line in another adventure! Fantastic!!!!
From the back cover. 'The looming Second Machine War has been years in the making—and now the upcoming battle is here.

Couple of disclosures up front: 1) I connected with the author after her first book and she has been kind enough to send me advance copies of her books ever since. So grateful! 2) I don't synopsize fiction. Even with a "spoilers" tag, I don't want to do the reader... or the author ... a disservice by, well, spoiling, or worse, getting it wrong (perception is on the part of the reader, yes, but if the author has a vision that I just didn't get... happens all the time with me...well, don't ruin it for others!)
That said, this is as you know, the conclusion of the sweeping saga of Pierce Landcross. And I will say that it is Ms. Lowe's best writing yet. She has converged a dozen storylines, some just a thread here or there, into a epic finale fitting of the adventure so far. The timelime is shorter than it seems, and the content dense (all of the lines, as it were). The battles (no surprises; it's in the description!) are broad ranging and yet fraught with minutiae. There are surprises. We laughed, we cried, it moved me Bob! And in the end, tidy.
What an incredible series. I truly love Michelle E Lowe’s wonderful imagination in creating these very entertaining and often mesmerising books. There’s nothing more enjoyable than losing yourself in a story for hours on end.
So many great characters, however Pierce Landcross is certainly the star. He’s lived a few lives and each time he’s come back he’s made an impression. The Machines wanted to take over, and there was going to be one hell of a battle, with ghost fire in the mix, and deadly machine people. Pierce and his sons were lucky that there were automatons that wanted to help them. The airships were intent on inflicting as much damage as they could in the war, and they were hard to stop. It really was all or nothing in the battle to destroy Metal Metropolis, if they all wanted to save the planet.
Hands down this is a memorable series. Well worth a read. 5/5 Star Rating.
