We all go ricocheting off one another through life and even the best laid plans can never account for the unseen actions (or subversions) of others often moving as a chain reaction of emotional energy from multiple degrees of separation. Such is the tangled web of people Merry-Go Round aims to capture, a rather convoluted, modern graphic novel adaptation of a Arthur Schnitzler play from 1920. This 2021 Andersen Prize for Best Comic Book winning title is brought to life by writer Sergio Rossi, illustrated by Agnese Innocente and translated here from the Italian by Carla Roncalli di Montorio, and moves between 10 characters. Beginning with two characters, each chapter takes one character from the previous chapter and shows their interactions with a new character until we return back to the first as a rather interesting look at all the various romances (mostly thwarted), heartbreaks, betrayals and more that go on between them. As Hope mentions in their review which inspired me to read this, it can be a bit obfuscating, though the emotional vibes still hit decently well and makes for a fascinating portrait of young life caught in the tempests of one another.

This is rather fun though often a bit frustrating with some of the stories being a tad tough to follow where motivations can be a bit hazy. Mostly it features young people thwarting their own love lives by being fairly bad at it, which feels rather true to life. It goes through quite the range of emotions with a few rather well done scenes, one in particular featuring the daydreams of two characters as they await a pregnancy test imagining both the good and bad times that might be coming. The scene, however, follows discovering that the same guy may have two different women awaiting pregnancy tests while he is sleeping with one of their mothers so like, the characters tend to be pretty flawed and often unlikable. Aside from the adorable romance between the bookstagram girl and the shy girl who is texting her pretending to be her friend because he has no interest in actually learning bookstagram girl’s book interests. Though this plot line felt like a less nuanced rehash of the movie The Half of It. Still the vibes are pretty enjoyable and the art is delightful.

Merry-Go Round is indeed quite the Merry-Go Round of emotions and has a rather fascinating method of telling a broad story. Worth the read, though I must confess I was only mildly enthusiastic about it.

at times borderline incomprehensible, but also like the VIBES were good!! also the art was just so lovely and i'm now very curious about the history of this play it's based on.

this is wholly a european book in an unexplainable way. the art is pretty, blotchy, watercolor type. asides from the 2 poc characters and the 2 with pink/blue hair, it's nearly impossible to tell people apart so you're just on a ride the whole time trying to understand dynamics of people you don't really remember. asides from the quick blink and you'll miss it fatphobia, biphobia, trekkie-phobia (yes, discrimination against Star Trek fans), I feel wholly neutral about this. the one chapter that did stand out to me is the one about these two exes who are in this tiny bathroom, waiting anxiously for the results of a pregnancy test. This is a 4 page spread of them pacing the room and being generally stressy while long panels on the top and bottom of the page show little vignettes of their potential life together if they had a baby. it's sweet and sad and optimistic all at once. the test comes back negative, but those few pages were such a swell of feeling.

Bello! Perfetto come lettura estiva sotto l’ombrello.

Welcome Back!

I have been a busy reader lately and have been considering making a TBR (gasp)! I do not typically make a monthly TBR, but I do have a TBR cart. I am very much a mood reader but I also like to read what becomes available on my Libby. I often put audiobooks on hold and I know other people are most likely waiting so I try to read those first so others are not waiting so long for me. But I wanted to take an audiobook break and read a graphic novel that I had borrowed on my Hoopla account. I took to my account via my Kindle and saw that I still had Merry-Go-Round out so I decided that would be my evening read!

This graphic novel is a bit different, so I am going to try hard not to spoil anything but be warned after this there may be spoilers.

In this graphic novel, we explore various relationships (mostly romantic but we definitely see some friendships as well). We see how days and hours can change things between people. How conversations and lack of communication can affect people and how they view one another. We also see very real potential consequences to the actions that happen in a relationship (or do not happen because you did not take a chance). Overall, I enjoyed this graphic novel a lot and getting to explore all the different relationships and all the different situations. I am someone who tends to like to get attached to a character so I was not sure how I would feel about a graphic novel like this (where we are changing characters a lot) but I honestly found it was like reading a mini story within each chapter. I definitely recommend giving this graphic novel a try!

In my experience, graphic novels have struggled to tell stories with as much depth as traditional novels, but really shine when showing the emotions surrounding just a few brief incidents. In this way, they can be similar to plays, which Merry-Go-Round takes full advantage of, adapting Arthur Schnitzler's 1897 play, La Ronde.

I found this to be a great choice for this format. Like the original, this retelling takes 10 seemingly isolated vignettes and weaves them into a cohesive story. On a microscopic level, each story seems to be incomplete; some leave a larger impression than others, and many leave you without resolution. But this can be like studying one wave when the real subject is the entire sea. The social circle is the main character, and each person or story is merely a brushstroke in the larger narrative.

Taken together, they paint a beautiful picture of the complications of young adult romance.

Mnie osobiście też ta książka skłoniła do przemyśleń.
