I must confess that I didn't really know what to think about this book before I read it. Call Me Milt by Brandon Kelley is a wonderful story that combines two worlds in one adventure. Ashton Hood the main character is fed up with his life and work and in bad need of a holiday. Why not try Key West for a few days? What could possibly happen except sunburn and to much alcohol? Well, at this point the book takes a turn and soon Ashton finds himself on a small island in the Caribbean. I really got a big surprise here and it's not bad, it's good. Really good. Having had a soft spot for pirate tales since my pre teen years. I found this book just as well written as the authors other work but in my mind this one is best. I am so glad I was persuaded by people on social media and some nudging from the author himself. Which lead to me getting an ebook of Speak the Devil's Name and later a signed copy of Call Me Milt with some wonderful swag. I am now a proud supporter of this scribe and recommend that you try him out.

Call Me Milt is extremely well written and you will not want to put it down once you start reading. “Call Me Milt" by Brandon Kelley

AN UNEXPECTED AND DELIGHTFUL READ

I had no preconceived expectations when reading “Call Me Milt” by Brandon Kelley. The novel’s synopsis provided clues indicating this would be entertaining, different, historical (with a back to the future twist); mission accomplished!!

The prologue hooked you at the start and constantly questioning as the story progressed. The fast-paced plot, interesting characters, and descriptive settings accelerated the intrigue about how dots would finally connect.

Brandon required readers use their imagination about the main characters’ (Ashton and Milt) vulnerabilities, unexpected strengths, unique motivations, and dramatic actions. Sometimes minor characters appeared and their roles momentarily distracted one’s attention from the story’s arc. This kept the readers attention.

Brandon wove his story with subtle hints and twists but cleverly didn’t reveal the outcomes until absolutely necessary. At times, one must pause his/her realities to enjoy the experience that dreams, aspirations, and vivid imagery usually allow.

To paraphrase Shakespeare, “All’s well that ended well for Ashton.”

“Brandon has written an excellent novel and I look forward to reading his next one.

I’ll start by saying this is not my favorite genre but found the writing interesting. The insight into the monotony of Ashton’s life and the hardships he has had really leads you to some self introspection.
I have read several books with this type of introspection and it always leaves me wanting more of my life.

Spoiler
I have a theory about what really happened.

Ashton tired of his boring life, working for a financial company, embezzles money from the company. He goes to the Caribbean to finalize his accounts and transfer/launder his money into treasure and comes up with a story to justify internally his new found fortune. Jiya is his way of building his confidence in romantic relationships. He plays this out in his mind to have experience and success so that when he comes back he has that confidence.
Nick from the office is his accomplices and brings him in after he gets settled.
The reason I believe this is my biggest question, why didn’t he go back to the island.

Call Me Milt is fun, smart, and surprisingly heartfelt read. Brandon Kelly is witty, honest, and just the right amount of weird in the best way. The story pulls you in with its humor but sticks with you because it actually has something to say. It’s one of those books you didn’t know you needed until you’re a few chapters in. Definitely worth the read.

A fun adventure story, the perfect way to daydream about Pirates and swordplay. One part Secret Life of Walter Mitty, one part Pirates of the Caribbean, a dash of King Kong.

A fumbling mess and a good example of what one can expect to come out from a Vanity Press where no editor dare venture.

I really enjoyed reading this book! A fascinating and adventurous read!

I found the storytelling both engaging and playful, offering a unique perspective on perseverance, ambition, and the power of human connection. The writing is vivid and heartfelt, making it easy to get lost in their world. This book is definitely a fun, must read!
