Good grief. Whenever I read a Charlie Godwyne novel I always end up blubbering all over the place which is generally disconcerting to my dogs, Lily and Izzie. However, it is always worth it. Blessed, like the other books in this Sky Nymph series (as well as the Augarten series), elicits tears from reading some of the heartrending moments. But most of the tears for me, came from the joy of this story which left me with feelings of some sort of inner well-being.
As in other Godwyne novels, we see that just as some people manifest evil, others exude a genuine selflessness, goodness, and kindness. Both exist in this world and sometimes we have choices to make.
One very important thing that helped me understand the story is something called magical ethics, which the author explains at the beginning of the book. We all have different beliefs and need to respect the beliefs of others, which are just as powerful for them as whatever our beliefs are. There is magic, and it is powerful. There are guardian angels. There are things that are perhaps difficult for us to understand. I assure anyone who reads this book (and you should) you really don't need to be particularly concerned about any of the above in order to completely enjoy this read.
A delightful surprise in reading Blessed, is that the character of Michel, who plays an important role in the first book of the Augarten series (Equinox) is at the center of this book as a young child. However, Blessed can be enjoyed and easily read as a standalone. For me, I was happy to read Equinox first...and then Blessed, because it allowed me to say OH MY GOODNESS and it put a very big smile in my heart.
The Augarten series I think will never be dated and will be, at the very least, a classic read in this genre. The Sky Nymph series books are in the same universe but can be read as standalones. All of the books have quite a bit of non-gratuitous sexy time. Blessed, as in all of the other books, weaves love...in all forms, into each storyline. The bottom line is, read this book.
