This is Anni Llyn's first book for adults. I hadn't heard her name before, but her face looked familiar when I googled her to see what else she'd written - she's a children's television presenter as well as an author, so it's likely I've seen her around on S4C. Anni was Bardd Plant Cymru from 2015 to 2017 (succeeded by Casia Wiliam) and most of her published literature is for very young children, therefore I wasn't sure what to expect from Trysor Garn Fadryn. Goodreads ratings were at 2.5, too. I'm a completionist, though, and this was one of the few Sylfaen-flavoured Cyfres Amdani books I hadn't read yet.

I really enjoyed it. It's not everyone's cuppa, and I wasn't quite sure which genre it was until I was around two thirds of the way through, but I really like what it turned out to be:

Like Samsara, my last Cyfres Amdani read, I found Trysor Garn Fadryn quite linguistically difficult in places, mostly during the climax of the story. Samsara is officially recommended at Uned 25, so if I were asked (which I wouldn't be nor have I been, but ... this is my review) I'd also place Trysor at the end of the course. Lots of Gogledd Cymraeg, as it's set in the Llyn Peninsula, and plenty of sentence structures learned in Sylfaen (past tense both short and long form, basai, dylwn, etc). One to return to in Canolradd too, I think.

The plot seems quite typical at first - fish-out-of-water city-girl glumly returns to the motherland after life plans go awry, but you can still truly imagine her grandmother's old cottage: charming, but dilapidated (with that old Rightmove chestnut 'lots of potential') and transient.

I found Aneirin to be a compelling, intriguing deuteragonist: he maintains his air of mystery right until

There is also an ongoing theme of birds in Trysor - a pair of courting buzzards near Ceri's home are the most prominent. A visiting bird is often interpreted as a spiritual messenger, and buzzards themselves are symbolic of transformation and rebirth.

I'll definitely come back to this in Canolradd, and I hope Anni Llyn writes more for adults or learners (or adult learners). If you too liked Trysor Garn Fadryn, I'd recommend Casia Wiliam's novel for older children, Sgrech y Mor - thematically different, and for a different audience, but a similar feeling.
