COMING SOON: Hot for Preacher (Harlequin Afterglow) - February 24, 2026 Grumpy preacher. Sunshine country singer living with rheumatoid arthritis. Second chances. Small-town meddling. So. Much. Heat.
Strange plot with the house falling down a cliff. Still wondering how that happened. Doesn't seem very logical, but hey, I'm not complaining. It was funny. Cute romance. Liked the progression of it.
I hated the ending. I would have given 4 or 5 stars but the ending did not do it for me. I liked Harlow. I disliked Max & then liked him. I liked Harlow & Max as a couple. But the story just ended. Blah. Nothing. Fell flat. It needed more.
2.5 Stars Unfortunately this book mostly missed the mark for me. Told in third person with perspectives from both the hero and heroine, their thought process is very much like my own: ping-ponging all over the place in seconds, with the smallest of things triggering random thoughts of subjects others might not understand the impetus for/path to. I can attest that this is an exhausting way to be, and I love to read because reading helps provide a focused escape from that kind of manic thinking.
Because the characters both had thoughts like this it was like jumping from my messy brain into theirs and I did not find it relaxing at all, and at times rather boring. There was so much of it that at times I forgot what one character had said by the time I got to the actual dialogue of the next character's response, or what they were actually doing. On the other hand, it definitely showed the intelligence of the author to me, and I did find some aspects smart or somewhat entertaining but I couldn't get past the constant thoughts to really sink into those aspects.
As far as comedy - I'm not the one to judge that by as I find very little funny in all artistic mediums, and that was the same here. I might have thought a couple of things were mildly amusing but I never laughed.
I was not connecting with this one but I suppressed the urge to skim until I got over the halfway mark, though it got harder and harder to do so, and did end up skimming the last 40% to see what happened. It is a slow burn and pretty tepid for all that, with lots of consent and proper behavior from the leads, appropriate for a real-world romance, if not for the kind of s3xy billionaire boss books we like, as the heroine so aptly mentions.
This is the story of Max and Harper and how they, somehow, get to their happy ever after.
She's trying to find him the house of his dreams, he's determined not to let her. The bet is that if she doesn't, she has to be at his beck and call for a month of Sundays. Well, we can all see what's coming!
A funny, easy to read book with engaging characters.
Harlow has the worst luck ever, she either runs, quits or gets fired from her jobs, and to top it off she also gets blackmailed by her ex. Harlow has to convince her new boss, the sexy grumpy billionaire she is the best employee so she can get her much needed bonus. One problem though, she is the reason he has no home and why she has to find him a new one. Harlow makes a bet with Max, neither willing to back down and both undeniably attracted to the other. This story was so much fun to read, I just loved the quirky jokester girl and the damaged genius billionaire chemistry. I loved Max and how he wanted to fix all problems, how sexy and confident he is and especially how he catered to Harlow. I laughed so hard, cried at times and cheered for Max, and sometime cheered for Harlow. But most of all I loved how honest, true, and what a truly good guy Max is in this story. This is a great book that will have you hooked until the end.
It's a good book, all the interactions between the two were fun and their banter was great. I especially liked the conflict because you could really feel the hurt emanating from both of them.
However, I enjoyed it the most when it was a quick read. In the beginning, I tried to read every single word, but quickly began to skim through paragraphs. Both characters can get very off-topic or start monologuing about random things, and I would much rather read actual conversations and plot instead of wanting to be a lizard basking in the sun, or other such thoughts.
If you think too hard about the characters or the plotline, it can fall apart (why was a butler agency contracting out his house in the first place, and why did no one catch the math error?) but I was needing a good, fast read, and this one did well.
3.5 stars, it took me a few chapters to warm up to the characters before I got into the book. Harlow is a self deprecating curvy girl, she'll throw out the punch line before someone can say it to hurt her, doesn't make it hurt any less. She's lived her life feeling the lesser of the family, always flitting from one job to another coming up short in relation to her "perfect" sister, the misfit of the family. Her life is in a down spiral, but she's determined to be the best butler she can to her billionaire client, problem is she's not a butler. Max doesn't know what to make of his new butler that destroyed his new home, nor how to handle her as she's determined to find him a new one. Attraction can be found even in opposites. All in all it was an okay fun read.
Overall, I truly enjoyed this book. It took me a little bit to get into it, but after a little bit, I got into the story and enjoyed it. At first, I could not stand Max. He seemed incredibly uptight, and rude. But eventually he I warmed up to him. And Harlow, I truly liked her. I thought that it was weird, and it bugged me a bit that there were so many characters that had a name that started with M. Besides Harlow, and Max’s two friends, the rest of the characters mentioned, had an M name. That could just be something that hat bugs me, but it really did. And I found myself getting confused at times with Max, Mark, and Mr. Mack. All very different characters. And two were unlikable. But I mostly enjoyed the story, and would be interested in reading other books in this series.
I didn't care for the Harlow character. She was indecisive, scatterbrained, kept repeating the same mistakes without learning anything from them and had a victim attitude regarding her family. Max's character confused me. He was orphaned in South America with no transition to how he came to be raised. There was a big gap from age 10 to when he was an adult. The circumstances of the bet made no sense. Any builder worth his salt would have caught the math error. And why would anyone trust someone with no building or contracting experience to build an addition on his house?
This book, in the midst of a heartwarming romance, covers how much we all doubt ourselves, especially in the face of what people say to us and with our bad experiences. This book really shows how taking one extra chance on believing in ourself is always the best choice and will pay off. Even when we make mistakes and even when life is messy. Love will always win.
Ms. Marsh has outdone herself with this book giving us the best of everything I love about her sense of humor and ability to write a story that made me fall in love with her characters and wanting to see them again and again in future books! Looking forward to reading more books by this amazing author. Happy reading everyone
Max Ivorsson, the world’s grumpiest billionaire and arrogant ass. She may want her bonus, but he wants revenge. He proposes a bet: if she can't find him the perfect replacement house, he gets her...as his personal butler for a month of Sundays. If she wins--triple the bonus. Game. On. It was an interesting rom-com. And am voluntarily leaving my review.
It's cute but the whole premise of why they make the bet in the first place is dumb. You're telling me that some glorified personal assistant copied down the measurements wrong on a building plan and not one single professional questioned it? And that's why the house slid off the cliff? And no one is suing the construction company that clearly doesn't have a clue about construction?
She's a realtor not a butler, maybe a personal assistant. Romance is okay. Quick unsatisfying ending to her blackmailer storyline. End of book was too abrupt and easy. Won't read the rest of the series and won't seek out the author's other works.
I enjoyed this book, was funny and witty, they make a cute couple but I’m quite gutted how abruptly the end was, it needed more. But I did enjoy the storyline so 4 stars
A cute story. I enjoyed reading this. Love the characters and the witty banter between Max and Harlow had me laughing out loud. Absolutely loved it! Recommend reading.
GOODREADS GIVEAWAY WINNER - Thank you Kindle. This book is romcom movie material. The premise is highly improbable but good fodder for a zany love story. Max is Cary Grant. It is hard not to fall for Max and Harlow’s quirky chemistry. I enjoyed Marsh’s astronomy metaphors and analogies also.
