Silvia

If there is one thing you needed to know about me it is this:

I hate vampires.

They are useless, soul-sucking monsters that destroy everything in their path, even my own family.

I joined The Order and became a vampire hunter for revenge, but I never would have guessed that my job would entail baby-sitting the vampire heir to the most powerful clan in the world.

And if she thought I was going to break like the other hunters she has been through... she has another thing coming to her.

Keir

I hate hunters... but I hate my prick of a father even more after I learned that he had worked with the Order to get one to guard me at all hours of the day.

Even after I had been through all of The Order's top hunters, they still insisted on sending one more.

It was useless though, they would all break eventually.

Whether it was sex, money, or power none of them could resist the temptation, even if it meant breaking our contract.

And I couldn't wait to prove The Order and my father wrong.

So what will your vice be, little hunter?

Was there issues with grammar and consistency yes? Did I eat this the f up? YES.

I demolished this in 24 hours which was a task considering how long it is.

Over the years I’ve read so much vampire lit and this is the closest I’ve found that’s sapphic that hit the same spot as other mainstream straight counterparts did. As a lesbian I just wanted a half decent vampire story and this is one of the first I’ve found that I didn’t want to throw at a wall.

Is there grammar/ spelling issues? Yes. It needed another edit through and I’m guessing the author may not have a editor because many were glaringly obvious. Saying that it wasn’t frequent enough to detract from the story.

There was also SA scenes that felt more descriptive than necessary but certainly weren’t as extreme as others I’ve come across. As someone who normally avoids those triggers they were iffy but for me personally weren’t too descriptive / long and were easily skippable for the handful of pages they occurred on.

The sex scenes were also a little repetitive but regardless my gay ass was here for the (heaps) of spice in this. And truly the story held my interest and felt fresh.

If you’re looking for something cheesy that you can binge with a boat load of spice then this is a good read. Honestly I devoured it even though it wasn’t a masterpiece it is a solid read.

Rep lesbian MC, sapphic MC, MLM sc, central relationship is WLW.

Tws listed below, please skip if you don’t want spoilers.

Tw//CW// death of family/ loved ones, poison, SA on page (one scene with attempted SA brief but interrupted, another scene with SA biting of breasts and other body parts, biting fuelled arousal and loss of mind against will. Whilst I don’t think there was penetration (it was fairly vague in description) it described a forced aroused state), one scene with slight dubcon (involving alcohol), child abuse in past (hitting, starving etc described on page briefly), unnecessary ‘small dick’ joke, forced drinking of blood, blood donors (and unwilling ‘donors’) torture on page, murder, gore, many scenes with consensual sex (including kink themes such as knife play, praise, begging etc)

"I hate you,” I whispered.
"Prove it,” she dared.

Vampire lesbian romance. Need I say more? This is what the people want (me, I'm people).

Ok, fine, here's a real review.

Summary
At first glance, Contract Bound is structured around one of the most common paranormal fiction tropes: the vampire hunter with a personal vendetta. Silvia Reiss is a top vampire hunter, working as part of a human-run law enforcement organization called The Order, established to keep vampires in check. The Order uses debt to subjugate its hunters. After vampires murder Silvia's parents and sister, she is forced into The Order's employment to work off her family's debt.

Silvia loathes vampires, is notorious for her hatred. Her reputation wins her the opportunity of a lifetime--a job that will pay off her entire debt. All she has to do is bodyguard the most powerful vampire clan's heir for a short time until they take power. The heir has a reputation--for corrupting the long list hunters assigned as her "babysitter" and getting them fired. But that won't be a problem for Silvia the Vampire Hater, right?

Keir is the infamous Carpe Noctem clan heir. Set to soon take over leadership from her father, Keir has never wanted to rule the clan. She occupies her time sneaking out of the palace to indulge in libertine vices--something that greatly disturbs her father, which is why he keeps hiring bodyguards to make her behave.

As the Power Transfer approaches, tensions between vampire clans, The Order, and rebels are escalating. Meanwhile, their proximity forces both Silvia and Keir to question everything they thought they knew about themselves and the world. You won't be able to tear yourself away from the political intrigue and romance in this book.

Review
Like I said--vampire lesbian romance. Obviously, I'm a fan.

Though the world building and exposition are a little rough, Mae's vampire world immediately captivates readers. There is a lot of telling not showing, but the world itself--The Order, the rebellion, the conspiracy--completely fascinating.

I adored Silvia and Keir's dynamic--their animosity, fervent emotions-- perfection. Keir is absolutely drool-worthy. I am an absolute simp for a tall, dark, and handsome woman.

10/10 smut

-vampires and vampire hunters
-paranormal romance
-enemies-to-lovers

While the plot was decent and the book held my attention, it simply wasn't well written. Despite the fact that it ends on a cliffhanger and a second book is being released it is still labeled as a stand-alone. That however is actually the least of my complaints. This book read like a first draft that had never been sent to an editor. It was filled with spelling errors and grammatical mistakes that could easily have been fixed if anyone had cared to take the time to do so. While the smut started off strong it quickly became repetitive. I did enjoy the concept and characters but it wasn't enough to keep it from feeling like I was reading a quickly written fanfic. Books like this one are why self-publishing gets a bad reputation.

listen....I really wanted to like this book but after I am reflecting on it, it was fucking awful.

I have NEVER read a book with so many plot holes in my entire life. NONE of my questions answered and nothing made any sense.

I will confess that I enjoyed Keir and Sylvia and their messed up relationship but it was exhausting to see the same exact patterns over and over again between them.

I'm still probably going to read the second book but I will also probably still complain about it :)

p.s. IT TOOK ME FOREVER TO FINISH THIS STUPID BOOK! A WHOLE FUCKING MONTH BE SERIOUS!!!

1.5 stars. I need to make note of all this author's pen names so that I never read a book from her again. No shade! I just don't think she's for me, especially now after reading one of both her contemporary and paranormal romance books, and being let down. (I actually did like the Christmas romance that she co-wrote with another author, but I'm thinking that must have been an outlier. Or maybe the other author actually edits -- okay, I'll behave.) This started off pretty decent, and then just kept devolving more and more. I just don't enjoy her formula for writing dark sapphic romances. There's always gratuitous violence and assault, female characters always have their power stripped away or challenged, and there are always elements that make NO RATIONAL SENSE, and seem to be transparently put in place because the author needs to make the characters suffer. Granted, these observations might be unfair, seeing as I've only read two of her dark romances. But it's enough that I don't think I'll ever read from her again.

(There'll probably be spoilers below. I'm not going to hide it under a cut. I WANT to spoil this book for you, because I don't want you all to read this. I care about you, friends.)

Silvia is a vampire hunter whose entire family (also hunters) were killed by vampires, and thus she hates vampires. Keir is the heir to a strong vampire clan, and she hates hunters. The Order of vampire hunters is a really powerful organisation, and Silvia ends up being assigned to bodyguard/babysit Keir. Where do I start with this... The worldbuilding is really weak and nonsensical. We're told that the Order has all this power and control, but we never really feel the weight of it, or how things ended up that way. The way the Order puts all of its people in huge debt just seemed like a really convenient plot point so that Silvia would have something hanging over her head. I just felt like this world was made up of huge set pieces, but not a lot of intricate detail to fill in the gaps. Leaning really hard on established tropes isn't a bad thing, but... I don't know. I just didn't think the worldbuilding was good. Keir and Silvia did have good chemistry at first, and I was into their whole enemies to lovers vibe, the hate-fucking, the 'I hate you but you turn me on so much so even though I'm not saying yes I'm not saying no either' deal. (Even though, with hatred as intense as this, I wanted it to be more slow burn.) A lot of the early sexy scenes appealed to me. But unfortunately, there's no real romance in this. Zero connection built, outside of the sexual one. You can have a really sex-forward, spicy book where the characters actually build a really strong and intimate connection, but this was NOT it. Even on the friendship side, with Gillard, I think we were meant to believe that he and Silvia got close, but I truly did not feel it.

The way the author chose to advance certain things in the plot... wow, I hated it. We're introduced to both our main characters as strong, capable women in their own right. Silvia is a talented hunter, leader of her group, lots of kills to her name, very smart and ruthless. Her experience and success rate are particularly emphasised. Keir, meanwhile, is the heir to her clan. Reluctantly so; her father is being made to step down by the Order in a few months. She never wanted to rule, and now she's got to step up. She's strong, cocky, and while she shirks her responsibilities, we're never made to feel like she's incompetent. But that's how the book portrays both of them. As idiots. Both these characters walk themselves into baffling situations, things that end up really badly. And it makes no sense in my head, because the characters that were drawn, the characters that I've been reading, don't seem stupid. So it just feels like the author is writing them in a certain way, just to make sure that the plot follows the beats she wants. The biggest example is Silvia getting tricked into meeting Vance. When the servant approached her, I was like, "Okay, this is obviously a trick. Silvia is smart, she has her guard up at this event, and she's surrounded by enemies, so there's no way she'll fall for -- oh. She's falling for it." Which leads to the very gratuitous biting and assault scene. The fact that Vance was able to bite her leads to Keir being able to bite her, so it really felt like the author chose to write Silvia without a brain for those few minutes, just so she could be assaulted for the plot.

(Also, I really hate how the assault was treated. And I mean, I went into this with eyes wide open. I knew that it was a dark romance, I knew that there would be assault and blood and dubcon and forced arousal from victims. I'm not complaining about it just because it's dark. But the WAY that it was addressed was so extremely inadequate. It was a traumatic event, but it was written about in such a casual way. It feels like the author's way of dealing with it was to have Silvia feel bad and ashamed for a few minutes, and then Keir fucked her into feeling better. Which is certainly... a choice. Why have sexual assault as a plot device if you have no interest in actually dealing with it? The way Keir would bite over the scars that Vance left, that could have been emotional and healing with a better author, but I felt like it was just used for titillation, and that was so disappointing.)

The second big thing that made no sense (and I'm only talking about major plot events, because otherwise, we'd be here all day with this nonsensical book) is the ending. Keir is told about the Big Evil Plan that her father and another vampire, Victor, are going to roll out, and the fact that they're going to kidnap Silvia and bribe the Order. And she just... walks into it. What? What? Why? Listen, if the book needed me to believe that her hands were tied and she had no choice but to sit back and let horrible things happen to Silvia, then it needed to do a WAY better job of laying that out. Like, why did she need to carry Silvia to New York in the first place? Did she HAVE to listen to her father's orders? Are there no vampires at the compound other than Gilliard that she could have turned to? And like, when she learned of Victor's plan, why didn't she just play along while at his house, and then step into action once they got on the plane? Try to escape, send Silvia to safety, find a way to tell her about it so she could be prepared? SOMETHING. Maybe the pilot and the staff on the plane were her father's people, but are you telling me she really saw no other way to deal with this situation, other than just... hand the woman that she supposedly has feelings for over to her sadistic father? That's so stupid!

And it frustrated me so much, because of course it leads to more scenes of our main characters being degraded and tortured and being treated awfully. I keep using the word gratuitous, but that's truly how it felt. Keir, who was supposed to be a suave, cocky, badass bitch, was just completely pathetic. It's so annoying reading a character making bad decisions, and then pages later going "OMG, I was so stupid! I can't believe how stupid I was!" I don't want to see my main character constantly self-flagellate; that's not what I came to a paranormal romance for. I'm not asking for perfect characters who never mess up, but this... ugh. We had some indication of how her father had fucked her up in the past, but I had no sympathy for Keir in those last few chapters, with the way the author wrote her. Honestly, I was SO ANGRY at Keir. After she knowingly and idiotically got Silvia into this situation, where she's being held captive and tortured horrifically, Keir goes out to beg and grovel to other people (the Order) to save Sil. And THIS is the romantic relationship I'm supposed to be rooting for?? The book ends on a cliffhanger, but the thought of Silvia forgiving Keir in the future books just makes my blood boil.

The more I think about Keir's ineffectualness, the more annoyed I get. She's just so passive, but nothing about her character leads me to believe that she WOULD be that passive. Like, her father has a bunch of blood slaves that he continuously mistreats, and sometimes he flat out murders them for fun. Keir hates his mistreatment of them. So... why doesn't she do something about it? She's next in line to be the leader. She's GOING to be the leader. Even if her father currently has control, are you telling me there's nothing she could do, no one she could contact within the Order to protect the human feeders, to get her father into trouble, something? Yeah, she's not the most responsible, but she loves breaking the rules and going against her father. You're telling me that even though she's disgusted by the way he treats humans, she doesn't try to help them? And even if she can't help, the fact that she doesn't even TRY just makes her pathetic. (Unless I missed an explanation or a really concrete reason WHY she can't help the feeders. In that case, my bad.) Also, there's so much random human death, it stopped being sad. It was purely a shock value thing.

I haven't even spoken about the writing yet. It's bad! I didn't notice how bad at first, because I was listening to the audiobook, and while some phrases were a little awkward, the writing seemed fine. (I did notice the weird way the author seldom uses contractions, which felt misplaced in this setting, but it wasn't that big of a deal.) But then I sat down to tandem read this with the ebook, and woof. I wouldn't be surprised if this hadn't been edited at all. Lots of grammar mistakes, missing punctuation, stuff like that. That REALLY annoys me when reading, so it didn't take long for me to go back to just the audiobook. The writing in general was fine; not great. We didn't have a lot of deep character insight or development. The descriptions and scene-setting weren't the best either.

Listened to the audiobook as read by Dana Dae, which was good, thankfully. Would have probably DNFed the book without it. I really enjoyed her voice, and while she didn't use a lot of character voices, it was distinct enough for me to tell when different people were talking. Other than that, I liked the chemistry between the main characters, and the smut was good. But overall, the book didn't do anything for me as a romance, and reading it made me annoyed. I think I'll be gently washing my hands of this author now.

Light spoilers ahead. Just a warning for the spoiler sensitive ones of you, but it's only one scene. I want as many people as possible to see this, so they are warned. Thats why I don't use the spoiler mechanic

Trigger warning: SA

What the actual fuck was that?
Like I love vampires, I'm lesbian, i thought this would be nice. There are some plot holes and typos, but I could absolutely ignore that for an interesting enough world and a good romance.

What I can't ignore, as a victim of SA myself, is how terible it's implemented and handled. First of all leave the gays alone, this traumatic shit is no plot device you can mess around with. But my main issue is, that vampire venom, makes humans horny, but not in a normal way, but in a sex drug way and so there is a moment when someone gets raped and "asks for it" because the venom makes them do it, even if they absolutely do not want this. It's so disgusting to read and hear about the thoughts of shame afterwards. What the fuck? Don't make a fictional drug, that makes victims ask for things they don't want. Consent in general is a big problem in this book.

More heavier spoilers to the aftermaths of the rape scene:

The main love interest needed to heal her after the rape and therefore she must use her vampire venom. This has the same horny effect on the human and she obviously is "willing" in this state. So the correct way to act for the love interest would be to say "no you can't control what you want right now, if you want it later in a clear state of mind, we could do it"
BUT NO, SHE FUCKING ACTS ON THE EFFECTS OF THE DRUG AND FUCKS THE HUMAN OLNY HOURS AFTER SHE WAS RAPED.

Was this author on drugs, or does she just not have a thing with... I don't know, BASIC morals and respect for victims?

4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
3.5/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️.🌶️

My pulse is through. the. roof. This book has to be one of the best, if not THE best, vampire romance I have read in my entire life. And to make it even better than any other paranormal romance, it's sapphic!!!!!!! And that ending had me REELING.

Pros:
-Enemies to lovers was done so well! Keir and Silvia are HOT. Their chemistry is absolutely wild.
-Elle Mae's ability to craft a vulnerable romantic relationship leaves me feeling like I've just run a marathon. I feel like I need to pause and catch my breath while reading the romantic moments and the spice scenes.
-Well crafted side characters! Gillard, my sweet pal. The perfect character to balance out Keir's idiotic impulses. The way he came to care so deeply for Silvia had me in tears.

Cons:
-I wished Silvia and Keir would have remained enemies for a tad longer in the beginning. The removal of clothes seemed to happen too early on for my taste.
-Internal monologues came to be a bit repetitive. Some of it could've been cut out.

Overall, this an AMAZING story. If you want the vibe of FBAA but make it sapphic (and with better writing), then this is the book for you!

Um ok so this is probably the best sapphic vampire book I’ve ever read haha. True enemies to lovers, vampire/vampire hunter, she’s her bodyguard, nonstop action, a REALLY intriguing plot with a twist at the end that had me GASPING at my kindle.

Just read this. OMFG.

"I hate you," I whispered.
“Prove it. You don't feel like you hate me.”
"I hate you." She gave me a smile, showing she didn't believe me one bit.

Interesting story, it sure kept me reading it even if I started getting a bit mad at the characters, because of... reasons.

The book needed an editor to polish it, but oh well... I of course need to know what is going to happen in book 2.

Twists and cliffhanger... must read more.

The characters in this book are almost all so selfish, I need some HEA, and some sort of humanity.

Spice was interesting, but mostly one sided... now I am so curious in book two... no spoiling... I did see the ending coming although lol.

okay so…i’m gonna try to be nice okay, i was honestly excited to read this and try out a book i saw on tiktok but…this was bad. it just was. i honestly don’t even wanna give it too much energy but i’ll say a few things.

first…this was giving wattpad like way too much. the plot was very one dimensional, flat, and lacked substance or depth. its almost as if it was an after thought just to get to the smut, which was…well i’ll get to that in a second. i felt like i was being told things rather than shown them. the lore behind the order, the vampires and the witches was so bland unfortunately…it deserved so much better. i felt like it was just stock vampires, stock “witches” but not even cause they barely got ANY detail or depth to them…and the insta-lust?? nOOOOO!!! there were also grammar issues and i just wonder if there was an editor involved? genuinely. not trying to be mean.

now let’s move on to keir…who we’re supposed to root for at the end?? supposed to care for?? i’m gonna be honest, she disgusts me. the way she violated sylvia after vance…and then eventually they just go back to normal? the way she ignores when sylvia says no cause she can smell her arousal?? it’s nasty. gross. abuser behavior. the way she wants sylvia to be obsessed with her and only wants her to be happy if it’s from her? i’m sorry but i could NOT like her at all…and the way they went from hating each other to not and sylvia having real valid reasons for hating her to just not anymore? with nothing that real to back it up? she CONSTANTLY contradicted herself.

nothing made sense. the plot was fickle and the world building was disappointing. like i said, i was excited but damn…i love gilliard though 🤍 wish he got more depth, justice for gilliard !!!

I think if I had read this in a different month—one where I hadn’t read two other VampireXHunter sapphic books I loved I may have enjoyed this one slightly more than I did.
In saying that I didn’t feel a huge amount of connection between the two FMCs…so the amount of spice felt odd.
Still an enjoyable listen

The subterfuge is making my head spin. The manipulation and general men assholery was too potent it made me feel very violent feelings. Goes to show the book was effective. Colourful characters. I’m warming up for book 2 because I am sure it’s going to be a helluva read!

ok so i really liked the romance in this if we were only going off of that i’d give this like 4 stars. there were deffos problems but i’m very willing to overlook those because i did. really like keir’s & sylvia’s relationship

but i do have to say that the final plot twist(?) made no sense to me. i might be stupid and just not understanding the explanation but i don’t see how keir couldn’t have just let sylvia flee or hide her herself so her dad wouldn’t have a hostage to black mail the order with. if i’m misunderstanding the explanation i am sorry but this made literally no sense in my mind.
i wanted to give this 4 stars but the plot literally stopped making sense to me in the end so i don’t think i can give this more than 3 stars even though i loved the sapphic romance a lot

This was an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Dual POV Sapphic Paranormal Romance
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶🌶🌶
This book had everything I want from a paranormal romance: great spice, creative plot, and of course the hunter falling for the vampire 😉

The chemistry between Silvia & Keir was everything. Silvia, the MC is a total badass but is so raw and real given her difficult past and her continued servitude to The Order. Keir is infuriating but in the best way- she acts so entitled and reckless when in reality she is suffering through her own struggles and traumatic past. This is a true enemies to lovers and even enemies as lovers, with Silvia taking a long time to come to terms with her own feelings for a vampire.
The plot worked perfectly for the characters and the world it is set it is so unique with The Order being corrupt and unethical and the lines between good and bad being so blurred.
This does end on a cliffhanger but it just left me wanting more!!

Literally what was the point of this, the barest hint of potential but horrible follow through, inconsistent characters, plot, world building all don’t at the wrong times and always focusing on the wrong things that have no reaction to the plot and WHAT WAS THIS ENDING like…. So disappointing to see not only harmful lesbian stereotype undertones and like then have characters that are supposed to care about silvia completely, disregard her wants, choices, autonomy Omgosh HOW DISAPPOINTING. God I’m so tired this kinda shit. Like yeah Silvia is a fucking mess but Keir is so horrible the last couple chapters of this book omg jail. We deserve better than this!

Now, what the actual fuck was this.
I must say it wasn't has bad as i though it would be( maybe because it was gay) but it still sucked.
I have come to learn that not even lesbians can make vampire romances enjoyable for me, but atleast i can say i tried. Now i can peacefully hate on it.
Don't get me wrong, i get why some people love this type of books but FOR SURE its not something i would like to read again.
Also the cliffhanger pissed me off, felt like i was watching a CW show.
