The long-awaited collection of James the Stanton's beloved Gnartoons comics is here! Drink a 40 with a skateboarding dog, light a cop car on fire with a herd of friendly forest critters, and eat a pizza brunch with a bunch of radical dinosaurs. Stanton's trademark trippy humor wriggles and shines its way through each lushly illustrated comic vignette, now lovingly presented in a deluxe hardcover.
I've got much the same to say as other did. The art really is fantastic it's where the burnt of my rating is. The writing is not where this shines. Some are fun but for the most part I was just really enjoying the crazy good art. Enough that it out weighs most all the short comings. If he teamed up with a writer I could see some fantastic work coming out from him. Keep an eye on this creator
Stylistically, it seems James the Stanton and Max Clotfelter share some DNA. Full of melting forms and sprouting biology, Stanton's comics seem to flow directly from his subconscious. There's a humor that runs throughout the collection, but I would've welcomed a little more depth just to add variety.
What on all that is holy did I just read...pleasantly pleased. Saw the cover a the local library and grabbed on the way out. Quirky, funny, abstract, etc.
